Trump: "Those people -- all of those people – excuse me, I’ve condemned neo-Nazis. I’ve condemned many different groups. But not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch. Those people were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue of Robert E. Lee."
Trump: "As I said on -- remember, Saturday -- we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence. It has no place in America. And then it went on from there. Now, here’s the thing --"
Trump: "So you know what, it’s fine. You’re changing history. You’re changing culture. And you had people -- and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists -- because they should be condemned totally. But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists. Okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly.

Trump’s Physician Continues to Mislead
October 4, 2020 at 12:02 pm
Dr. Sean Conley was asked at a press briefing this morning why he was so misleading on Saturday and replied he was trying to reflect the team’s “upbeat attitude” and didn’t want to “steer the course of illness in another direction,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
He added: “In doing so, it came off that we were trying to hide something, which wasn’t necessarily true.”
Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN said doctors at Walter Reed are throwing “the kitchen sink” at Trump, feeding him three different “serious” medications, one of which is experimental in nature.
He suggests this is far more serious than what Conley is letting on.

Trump ‘Furious’ with His Chief of Staff

“President Trump is furious with chief of staff Mark Meadows after the top West Wing official contradicted the White House physician’s assessment Saturday of the President’s health,” CNN reports.
“Meadows is now widely known inside the White House to be the unnamed source who spoke to reporters following the medical briefing yesterday and offered a more dire assessment than Navy Cmdr. Dr. Sean Conley had given shortly before.”

Trump Given Steroids Typically Used for Those October 4, 2020 at 12:23 pm
Dr. Sean Conley said that President Trump had been given the steroid dexamethasone on Saturday, the New York Times reports.
“The drug has been shown to help patients who are severely ill with Covid-19, but it is typically not used in mild or moderate cases of the disease, and in fact could be harmful early in the course of the disease, when steroids could dampen the body’s own immune response.”
“Nonetheless, the doctors said, Mr. Trump is doing better and they projected he could be discharged back to the White House from the hospital as early as Monday.”

Post-Debate Poll Shows Trump Support Skyrocketing Among Latino and Black Voters
Something is definitely going on, or at least probably going on, that we aren't being told.
https://www.westernjournal.com/post-debate-poll-shows-trump-support-skyrocketing-among-latino-black-voters/
Trump continues to improve and could be discharged from the hospital as soon as Monday, physicians say
NYT:
A large study of dexamethasone in Britain found that the drug helped those who had been sick for more than a week, reducing deaths by one-third among patients on mechanical ventilators and by one-fifth among patients receiving supplemental oxygen by other means.
Dexamethasone is one of several treatments that the president has been receiving. On Friday, he was given an infusion of an experimental antibody cocktail that is being tested by the drug maker Regeneron. Mr. Trump is also receiving a five-day course of remdesivir, another experimental drug that is used in hospitalized patients and has been granted emergency authorization by the Food and Drug Administration.
Regeneron’s antibody cocktail and remdesivir are treatments that are believed to work best early in the course of the infection, because they fight the virus itself and could prevent it from spreading throughout the body. But dexamethasone, which reduces the body’s immune response, is given later in the illness, when some people’s immune systems go into overdrive and attack their vital organs.
Even though he has had low-oxygen episodes and is receiving dexamethasone, the doctors said Mr. Trump was doing better and might be discharged from the hospital and return to the White House as early as Monday.
The briefing came a day after a messy and contradictory presentation on Friday about whether Mr. Trump had serious medical issues.
The C.D.C. is not involved in contact tracing from the Rose Garden ceremony.
The White House has not sought help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to trace the contacts of people who attended a celebration in the Rose Garden on Sept. 26 for Judge Amy Coney Barrett, according to a federal official familiar with the matter.
Dr. Sean Conley, the White House physician, told reporters on Saturday that his team was working with the agency to trace contacts. But according to the federal official, while the C.D.C. had a team of experts on standby to help the White House, it has not been approached to do so.
In an interview Sunday on the CBS program “Face the Nation,” Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, also offered evidence suggesting that no robust contact tracing effort was underway. Dr. Gottlieb said he had spoken to several officials who attended the Rose Garden event and who had not been spoken to by any contact tracers.
“I think they have an obligation to understand how the infection was introduced into that environment,” he said of the White House. “There doesn’t seem to be a very concerted effort underway.”
The celebration of Judge Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court on Saturday is looking more and more like a “super spreader event.” At least seven attendees, including President Trump and Melania Trump, have already tested positive.
Some attendees have since tested negative, but that does not necessarily mean they are not infected. Negative results are common early in the course of infection, when the levels of virus in the body are still low. For that reason, C.D.C. guidelines recommend that anyone who has been in close contact with an infected person should stay in quarantine for two weeks even if they test negative.
Since a Sept. 26 celebration for Judge Amy Coney Barrett, at least seven attendees have tested positive for the virus.
The lack of attention to contact tracing could have devastating consequences for the hundreds of people who have come into proximity with those who may have become infected on Saturday. Any of them could have caught the virus and gone on to transmit it to many more people.
Since Saturday, President Trump has debated former Vice President Joe Biden, spoken at a rally attended by thousands of people in Minnesota, met with supporters at a golf club in New Jersey and conferred with dozens of aides at the White House, all while not wearing a mask.
Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey who helped the president prepare for Tuesday’s debate, has tested positive and been hospitalized.
The C.D.C. has experts who are trained in contact tracing and could have immediately put an operation into place to trace contacts of President Trump and others who have been infected. The experts would have worked with health departments of the states in which incidents occurred. In the case of the White House, “we would help if we were asked,” the official said. But no such request came through, he said: “We don’t get involved unless we’re asked to get involved.”
A timeline of statements from Trump’s doctors and aides shows conflicting reports over Trump’s condition.
On Sunday, Mr. Trump’s medical team clarified that they had given an overly rosy description of the president’s illness on Saturday.
But it remained unclear exactly when his illness had been diagnosed, when he had first developed symptoms, how severe those symptoms were and whether he had been treated with oxygen at any point.
Here is a timeline of information released before Sunday on Mr. Trump’s health:
Early Saturday, in the first official briefing by Mr. Trump’s doctors since he fell ill, the White House physician, Sean P. Conley, painted a relentlessly positive assessment of Mr. Trump’s condition.
“The team and I are extremely happy with the progress the president has made,” Dr. Conley said then.
His tone was a bit more guarded in the latest update. Dr. Conley said in a statement Saturday night that while the president is “not yet out of the woods, the team remains cautiously optimistic.”
Dr. Conley and others on the team declined to provide important specifics, and left an impression that the president had been known to be sick a day earlier than previously reported, forcing them to backtrack later.
At the morning briefing, Dr. Conley said that the president was not receiving supplemental oxygen at that time, but he repeatedly declined to say definitively whether Mr. Trump had ever been on oxygen.
“None at this moment, and yesterday with the team, while we were all here, he was not on oxygen,” Dr. Conley said, leaving open whether there had been a period on Friday when he was on oxygen.
Two people close to the White House said in separate interviews with The New York Times that the president had experienced trouble breathing on Friday and that his blood oxygen level had dropped, prompting his doctors to give him supplemental oxygen at the White House and then to transfer him to Walter Reed.
Dr. Conley also appeared to indicate that the president’s infection was first diagnosed on Wednesday, and not on Thursday night, as Mr. Trump had said when he disclosed the positive test on Twitter early Friday. As Dr. Conley was describing what he said was the president’s progress, he said that Mr. Trump was “just 72 hours into the diagnosis now,” which would have put the diagnosis at midday on Wednesday.
After the early briefing on Saturday, Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, offered a far more sobering assessment of the president’s condition than the doctors had. Speaking to reporters outside Walter Reed, Mr. Meadows described the president’s vital signs as “very concerning.”
“We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery,” he said.
Mr. Meadows, whose comments were said to have angered the president, later called to Fox News and said that Mr. Trump had shown “unbelievable improvement.”
Mr. Trump was said by three administration officials and people close to him to indeed be in better shape, which added to the frustration among some White House advisers that Dr. Conley and Mr. Meadows had created such confusion.
James will violate his repeated standards.
Watch.
Two White House residence employees, who do not have contact with the president, tested positive weeks ago.
The people who tested positive were not employees who come in direct contact with the president and the first lady, one of the people familiar with the diagnoses said. But the positive results again raise questions about how and when President Trump may have been exposed to the virus.
Judd Deere, a spokesman for the president, declined to comment specifically on the diagnoses, referring to a statement about not commenting on the personal health of individuals.
The White House “does take any positive case seriously and has extensive plans and procedures in place to prevent further spread,” he said. “A full and complete contact trace consistent with C.D.C. guidelines is included in that and appropriate notifications and recommendations are made. “
This is the shit that James and I have destroyed before

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is presenting a distorted account of President Donald Trump’s words on the coronavirus, wrongly suggesting Trump branded the virus a hoax.
In fact, Trump pronounced Democratic criticism of his pandemic response a hoax.

Doctors: Trump's blood oxygen level dropped twice recently
The Associated Press
Oct 4th 2020 1:17PM
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s blood oxygen level dropped suddenly twice in recent days, but he “has continued to improve” since then, the White House physician said Sunday, adding a new layer of confusion to the president’s fight with COVID-19 even while suggesting he could be discharged from the hospital as early as Monday.
Trump’s doctors, speaking on the steps of the military hospital where he was being treated for a third consecutive day, refused to disclose the specific timing of the president’s dip in oxygen or whether lung scans showed any damage.
Pressed about the conflicting information he and the White House released the day before, Navy Cmdr. Dr. Sean Conley acknowledged that he had tried to present a rosy description of of the president's condition.
“I was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude of the team, that the president, that his course of illness has had. Didn’t want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction," Conley said. "And in doing so, came off like we’re trying to hide something, which wasn’t necessarily true. The fact of the matter is that he’s doing really well."
Conley said the president had a “high fever” and a blood oxygen level below 94% on Friday and during “another episode” on Saturday. He was evasive when asked whether Trump's level had dropped below 90%: “We don’t have any recordings here on that.”
The level currently stands at 98%, Trump's medical team said.
Blood oxygen saturation is a key health marker for COVID-19 patients. A normal reading is between 95 and 100. A drop below 90 is concerning. People with the virus sometimes do not realize their oxygen levels are low.
Trump offered his own assessment of his status the night before in a video from his hospital suite, saying he was beginning to feel better and hoped to “be back soon.” And he was back on social media early Sunday morning, sharing a video of flag-waving supporters, most not wearing masks, gathered outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
James has a "narrative".... he is the false prophet.

Must be in radical leftwing DNA, look at the lying POS "pastor" who does it hourly.
James the topic of this thread is actually your lying.
The changing, and at times contradictory, accounts from the Trump administration highlighted a credibility crisis for the White House at a crucial moment, with the president’s health and the nation’s leadership on the line. Moreover, the president's health represents a national security issue of paramount importance not only to the functions of the U.S. government but also to countries around the world, friendly and otherwise.
Trump's Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, pulled his attack ads off the air during Trump's hospitalization, and on Sunday, he dispatched senior aides to deliver a largely friendly message.
“We are sincerely hoping that the president makes a very quick recovery, and we can see him back out on the campaign trail very soon," Biden adviser Symone Sanders said on CNN's “State of the Union.”
She added: “This is a glaring reminder that the virus is real.”
Biden was at home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday with no plans for in-person campaigning or other public appearances. Having already tested negative, he is expected to release the results of a new coronavirus test later in the day, and the campaign has pledged to disclose those results and all other future test results for the 77-year-old candidate.
On Saturday, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters outside the hospital, “We’re still not on a clear path yet to a full recovery.” In an update Saturday night, Trump’s chief doctor expressed cautious optimism but added that the president was “not yet out of the woods.”
On Sunday, Conley's assessment was more positive, even while he acknowledged for the first time a second sudden drop in Trump's blood oxygen level on Saturday. He neglected to mention the episode in multiple statements on Saturday.
Another member of the president's medical team, Dr. Brian Garibaldi, said Trump on Sunday “has been up and around” and “feels well."
“Our plan for today is to have him eat and drink, to be up out of bed as much as possible, to be mobile,” Garibaldi said. “And if he continues to look and feel as well as he does today, our hope is that we can plan for a discharge as early as tomorrow to the White House where he can continue his treatment course.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s handling of the pandemic and his own health faced new scrutiny.
Trump’s medical care is far superior to the average American’s, with around-the-clock attention and experimental treatments. In the hospital video, he defended his decision to continue campaigning and holding large events during a pandemic.
“I had no choice,” said Trump, who refused to abide by basic public health recommendations, including mask-wearing. "I had to be out front. ... I can’t be locked up in a room upstairs and totally safe. ... As a leader, you have to confront problems.”
Trump is 74 years old and clinically obese, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from a virus that has infected more than 7 million people nationwide and killed more than 209,000 people in the U.S.
First lady Melania Trump remained at the White House to recover from her own bout with the virus.
Trump's administration has been less than transparent with the public throughout the pandemic, both about the president’s health and the virus's spread inside the White House. The first word that a close aide to Trump had been infected came from the media, not the White House. And aides have repeatedly declined to share basic health information, including a full accounting of the president’s symptoms, what tests he’s undertaken and the results.
At the same time, the White House has been working to trace a flurry of new infections of close Trump aides and allies. Attention is focused in particular on the Sept. 26 White House event introducing Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
That day, Trump gathered more than 150 people in the Rose Garden, where they mingled, hugged and shook hands — overwhelmingly without masks. There were also several indoor receptions, where Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Amy Coney Barrett, her family, senators and others spent time in the close quarters of the White House, photographs show.
Among those who attended and have now tested positive: former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, the president of the University of Notre Dame and at least two Republican lawmakers — Utah Sen. Mike Lee and North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis. The president’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, and the head of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, have also tested positive, though they were not at the event. Another prominent Republican who has tested positive: Sen. Ron Johnson. R-Wis.

The Reckless Race to Confirm Amy Coney Barrett Justifies Court Packing
We used to reject court packing as a dangerous game. Now we believe it may be the best way to restore the Court’s legitimacy.
7:49 AM ET
Barely a week after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, before the late justice had even been buried, President Donald Trump hosted a Rose Garden ceremony to formally announce his nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to fill the open seat on the Supreme Court. A week later, it appears that the inauspicious ceremony may have been at the center of the coronavirus outbreak now plaguing the White House and the Senate. Yet even with the president hospitalized and three Republican senators infected with the virus, the Republican Party is barreling ahead with its effort to install Barrett mere weeks before Election Day. The reckless rush to vote is an indication of the desperate and corrosive power grab at play, one that places the future of the Court at risk. If Republicans succeed, and Democrats win the Senate and the White House in November, Democrats must add seats for additional justices—not as a means of political one-upmanship, but, paradoxically, to save the Court.
For the past few years, court packing has largely been a fringe idea, promulgated by leftist scholars and activists infuriated by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s refusal to hold Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland in 2016. For the most part, the Democratic establishment has been resistant to the notion, on the grounds that Republicans would someday surely try to respond in kind.
We understand these objections; until recently, we shared them, and dismissed court packing as institutionally corrosive and politically unserious. But no longer. The current battle over the Supreme Court changes the calculus; if Barrett is confirmed and Trump loses the election, adhering to norms and accepting the status quo on January 20 poses a greater harm than expanding the Court would. We have now come to believe, more in sorrow than in anger, that adding justices may be the only way to restore the institutional legitimacy of the Court.

President covid-19 updated.
The White House physician said Sunday that President Donald Trump is now taking another drug for Covid-19, adding to his growing list of treatments for his illness.
Dr. Sean Conley said the president was given a steroid called dexamethasone following “two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation,” meaning his oxygen levels dropped too low.
“We debated the reasons for this and whether we even intervene,” Conley said during a press conference at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. “As a determination of the team, based predominantly on the timeline from the initial diagnosis, that we initiate dexamethasone.”
Trump received the first dose of the steroid on Saturday and will be on it for “the time being," Conley said.
Dexamethasone has shown to be beneficial in those with severe Covid-19 because it can stop the immune system from going into overdrive. When this happens, the immune system can do more harm than good, attacking the body in what’s called a cytokine storm.
However, the drug is not recommended for more mild cases of the disease.
“The fact that he got the steroid sets up a bit of a red flag that there’s something going on here,” NBC News senior medical correspondent Dr. John Torres told Kate Snow on Sunday. “I think they might be painting a little bit of a rosy picture for everyone.”
The treatment was first shown to be helpful in June in clinical trials in the U.K. Preliminary results of that trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the steroid reduced the risk of death in patients with severe Covid-19 who need supplemental oxygen. But for mild cases, the treatment can be harmful.
“However, there was no evidence that dexamethasone provided any benefit among patients who were not receiving respiratory support at randomization, and the results were consistent with possible harm in this subgroup,” the researchers wrote.

According to a pair of new Yahoo News/YouGov polls conducted immediately before and after President Trump disclosed his COVID-19 diagnosis, Joe Biden improved his lead in the 2020 election with his more composed performance in last Tuesday’s debate. He has maintained that same lead as a spate of new coronavirus cases started to surface in and around the White House, further undermining voters’ confidence in the president’s handling of the pandemic.
The first survey, conducted from Oct. 1 to Oct. 2, found Biden ahead by 8 points (48 percent to 40 percent) after leading Trump by 5 points (45 percent to 40 percent) in the previous Yahoo News/YouGov poll. The debate, held Sept. 29 in Cleveland, may have made the difference.
Most people now think they're far too political.

A theory has emerged that a video filmed by US President Donald Trump from hospital was edited to hide his symptoms of coronavirus from the public.
Mr Trump was flown to hospital after testing positive to Covid-19 late last week.
Since, there have been conflicting reports from White House officials and his doctors as to how well the US President is, with some claims he’s relying on an oxygen tank.
Mr Trump has maintained he’s OK.
In a four-minute video posted on Twitter on Saturday (local time) from his suite at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, a tired-looking Mr Trump said he was feeling "much better."
"Over the next period of a few days, I guess that's the real test, so we'll be seeing what happens over those next couple of days," he said, seated in front of an American flag while wearing a jacket and open-necked shirt.
Was the video of US President Donald Trump speaking from hospital edited? Source: Twitter

However, there have been some suggestions from viewers that the video has been edited.
At one point, Mr Trump says “if you look at the therapeutics - which I’m taking right now, some of them”. The US President appears to pause briefly and either hiccup or cough mid-sentence.
But viewers have speculated this part was cut out.

One Twitter user suggested the Trump coughed but it was removed using Adobe Premiere Pro’s morph cut feature between the words “therapeutics” and “which”.
Another man added there is “clearly a cut” in the video.
“Hard to imagine any rationale other than persuading the American public that he is healthier than he actually is,” he tweeted.

However, other people suggested he’s spasming as a result of the virus and the video hasn’t been edited.
Others have suggested it was filmed before he was hospitalised but photos released by the White House seem to refute this claim with photos of the president working at Walter Reed with the same background as the video.
Mr Trump's vitals over the last 24 hours were “very concerning” and the next 48 hours will be “critical” in terms of his care, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told reporters on Saturday.
“We're still not on a clear path to a full recovery,” he said.
Mr Meadows altered his tone hours later, telling Reuters that Mr Trump was doing "very well" and that "doctors are very pleased with his vital signs."
The balloon believes a secret majority exists.
The campaign’s messaging is that Trump, despite being the incumbent, is an outsider running against an elite machine working against his beleaguered supporters, he said.
There may be anecdotal evidence of Trump supporters being afraid to put a campaign sign in their yard or a bumper sticker on their car, he said. But the same can be said for the other side, depending on the social context of where you live.
There is very little indication in the data that we are seeing people being reluctant to tell the truth to pollsters out of fear of retaliation,

“President Trump didn’t disclose a positive result from a rapid test for Covid-19 on Thursday while awaiting the findings from a more thorough coronavirus screening.
“Mr. Trump received a positive result on Thursday evening before making an appearance on Fox News in which he didn’t reveal those results. Instead, he confirmed earlier reports that one of his top aides had tested positive for coronavirus and mentioned the second test he had taken that night for which he was awaiting results.”

We must break the fever: After this week, defeating Donald Trump is only more imperative
By Garry Kasparov
New York Dily News
OCT 03, 2020 AT 5:00 PM
Late Thursday night, President Trump added a new entry to the long list of tests he has failed as the leader of the United States: a COVID-19 test. Trump’s news came as a shock, but not as a surprise. He and his administration have downplayed the seriousness of the virus from the beginning, flouting basic precautions.
Even worse, this disregard for the safety of others was itself contagious and spread like wildfire through thousands of Republican officials and millions of supporters across the country. The catastrophic American response to the coronavirus has not been a technical matter, not a lack of expertise or resources. It has been an act of sabotage to pretend that a virus with no vaccine or cure could be bluffed and bullied and wished into submission.
Trump’s bravado has now reaped its consequences in the White House, and positive tests are coming back from all over the administration and among supporters who have been in close contact in recent days. This localized flare-up confirms that one serious preexisting condition for COVID can be foolishness.
Perhaps Trump’s inner circle forwent an ambitious federal coronavirus response because they judged it to be worse for blue states and the cities that house the liberals, the poor and the people of color they deem expendable. But in the political demographic, Republican leadership suffers most.
Trump will not repay any pity. Should he recover without a serious case, he will happily continue to downplay the disease that has killed more than 200,000 Americans. It’s hopeless to talk about worst-case scenarios in 2020 or with Trump — they both effortlessly surpass every attempt. That said, Trump leaving his sickbed to tout his invulnerability in the final weeks of a presidential campaign is a script that would terrify even Stephen King.
It will also overshadow the many consequential items we were all worried about before Trump announced his diagnosis. This is an effect of the “crisis every day” model of governance that I warned about when Trump was inaugurated. There is no need for a chess master’s strategy or planned distractions when the natural state of the environment around Trump is chaos. It will require tremendous strength to stay focused on what matters most in the coming month — and months, since Trump will stay in power until Jan. 20 even if he loses on Nov. 3.
Tuesday’s presidential debate was several years ago at the speed of today’s news cycle, and that suits Trump fine. His blustering aggression was in keeping with his image, a performance that will only satisfy his most ardent fans. Anyone who liked Trump’s debate theatrics already loved him — and loved him for all the reasons he is such a terrible president and terrible person. The egocentricity, the personal attacks, the constant disruptions that even an experienced journalist like Chris Wallace felt helpless to prevent.
As he did throughout his business life and has with the U.S. government itself, Trump shredded the rules and defied anyone to stop him or make him pay a price for doing it. He didn’t care about the impression he made at the time, only to make a few clips that will play well in an endless loop on Fox News.
We didn’t learn anything from the debate that we didn’t already know. This isn’t so unusual with modern political debates, but now the trenches are truly dug deeply, and Americans must begin the process of digging out. When political tribalism is so strong, the issues barely matter at all, only my side and your side.
The first televised debates between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960 are notable not just because they famously showcased JFK’s youthful vigor and Nixon’s sweaty makeup job. Their platforms were very different, but they spoke often of how they shared goals for American prosperity and leadership. They differed on the means, but the ends were not much in conflict.
Today, that feeling of a shared mission that would include every American is gone. Trump won’t even agree to a peaceful transfer of power should he lose next month — something that coincides ominously with new polls showing more Americans see violence as an acceptable means to achieving political ends, a jump from 8% to 33% in just three years. [Rat is one of those applauding this.]
Flouting norms and laws is just business as usual for Trump, as his newly revealed tax returns prove. The real scandal wasn’t even the $750 he paid in taxes in 2017, it’s that he’s in so much debt he’s the ideal target of any kind of influence operation, as long suspected. Someone with that much leverage over him and his family shouldn’t be allowed to mow the White House lawn, let alone speak from the Rose Garden.
Vladimir Putin, the Saudis and other dictatorships that work like mafias are always on the lookout for vulnerable companies and business owners they can use to launder their looted billions and to gain influence in the free world. Trump’s fawning over Putin and Mohammed bin Salman would make a lot more sense if they own more of his assets than he does.
Meanwhile, Putin is working hard to get Trump reelected, and Trump is, to quote his former national security adviser, Gen. H.R. McMaster, “aiding and abetting Putin’s efforts.” That would be a devastating bombshell in any other administration in U.S. history, but in Trumpworld it barely makes the top 10 scandals of the week.
Speaking of aiding and abetting, the GOP, the “law and order” party, is content to ignore these daily outrages. They are now preparing to rush through the nomination and confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s choice to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. The Republican control of the Senate means they may achieve this, despite their hypocrisy after blocking President Obama’s nominee in the last year of his presidency.
The defense by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Ted Cruz and other Trump enablers is that pushing Barrett through at all speed is constitutional. Not that it will reflect the will of the American people, or the traditions surrounding the highest court in the land, but simply that it’s legal.
The Democrats can then counter with their own “constitutional” moves if they take back control of the Senate and the White House, like adding two more seats to the court and appointing liberal justices to restore the balance.
As with rushing Barrett through now, this would be legal. And, as with McConnell’s power play, it would be bad for the government and the country, perpetuating a downward cycle of destroying norms in the pursuit of power.
Trump is an incompetent buffoon, and could never make any progress without enablers like Cruz and Attorney General Bill Barr. They aren’t ignorant yes-men or brutish ideologues. They channel Trump’s base instincts and vile self-interest into a constitutional framework to suit their own interests. They understand the damage they are doing, and the risk Trump represents; they just don’t care as long as they can benefit from it in the meanwhile.
To avoid a retaliatory race to the bottom, the Democrats should stand on principle now. They should tell McConnell that they will pack the court if he goes through with ramming the Barrett nomination through. They have to say it now, and should boycott the confirmation hearings if McConnell goes forward. Barrett’s qualifications and background are not the issue; it is the legitimacy of the moment and the man nominating her.
Senators may have a duty to attend hearings, but their foremost duty is to defend the Constitution to which they swore an oath, not to serve as props in a charade. They should remember what a liberal lion of the court, Justice Earl Warren, once wrote: “It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive.”
Integrity and the spirit of the law matter because you can never put everything in writing. You cannot predict every loophole, every legal angle and challenge to common sense. There must be a place for norms and precedent and the integrity to uphold them in the public interest or we are lost. Yes, we must patch up the cracks and codify the customs and standards Trump has trampled, but that is not enough. Even repudiating Trump overwhelmingly at the polls will not be enough unless we deter those who would follow in his demagogue’s footsteps.
That this White House and its congressional GOP enablers don’t believe in science has now been verified beyond any doubt. But I’m even more concerned about their lack of belief in the rule of law and integrity in American government. The health of American democracy is of far greater consequence than the health of Donald Trump.

President Trump on Sunday greeted supporters outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from his motorcade, leaving his hospital suite to make a "surprise" visit despite undergoing treatment for the coronavirus.
The president Sunday evening tweeted a video in which he said he planned to go say hello to the dozens of supporters who had gathered across the street from the hospital.
Moments later, video emerged of the president's motorcade passing by, with a masked Trump visible waving from the backseat. The decision triggered immediate safety concerns — and outrage — as the president is infected with a highly contagious virus that has killed more than 205,000 Americans.

CNN's Jake Tapper sends searing message to hospitalized President Trump:
'GET WELL AND GET IT TOGETHER'
On Sunday, the State of the Union host — who had previously expressed his frustrations over Twitter about the lack of interview access to White House officials and health experts for Sunday news programs like his amid Trump’s hospitalization — didn’t mince his words as he addressed the president, known for regularly tuning into news shows, during his broadcast.
“Many Americans are likely feeling both sympathy and anger today, emotions that don’t necessarily mix well,” the news anchor began. “Sympathy for all those suffering, including President Trump, who remains at Walter Reed Medical Center. But also, anger. Because so much, so much of this pain could have been avoided.
“So many of us since March have been doing everything we can to preserve the health not only of ourselves and our families, but our communities, our neighbors, you. Social distancing, wearing masks, holding events remotely. Weddings have been canceled; jobs lost. Children are missing out on in-person education and their ability to see friends. It’s a real crisis. It’s going to leave scars. 208,000 Americans have died. Thousands of Americans have lost loved ones without being able to properly mourn, or even say goodbye.
“But we’re in the middle of a once-in-a-century pandemic,” he continued. “Health experts say this is what we need to do in order to get to the other side. Regardless of any sympathy we may feel, we also know: the president has been undermining these efforts, expressing disdain for health regulations and those who abide by them.”
Tapper went on to play a clip of Trump chiding a White House reporter for being “politically correct” by wearing a mask. The CNN host then addressed those who refuse to wear masks or socially distance.
“You are making it worse for all of us,” he said, adding that they were taking cues from the White House, Tapper cited the recent Rose Garden reception for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, which some health experts are calling a “super-spreader” event following a rash of positive COVID-19 results among those who attended, including former adviser Kellyanne Conway.
“How are future generations going to try to make sense of these images of the Republican leaders of the nation acting like this during a once-in-a-century pandemic with more than 200,000 Americans dead?” he puzzled.
Tapper clarified that he wished those affected a “full recovery,” but hit out at what he called the administration’s “callous indifference.”
“But do you not see? It’s not just through failed leadership, or setting bad examples. You are all now literally risking spreading the virus yourselves. The president and his team have been behaving as if the pandemic is over. This callous indifference to the well-being of the citizens this president swore to protect — it’s no longer theoretical. It’s no longer, well, they might get the virus.”
Tapper then chastised Trump for carrying on with his New Jersey fundraiser despite knowing that aide Hope Hicks was sick and positive for COVID-19, potentially putting countless people — from housekeepers to his own donors — at risk.
“I wish you all health and recovery, and a long life,” Tapper concluded. “But we have to note the tragedy here. It is horrible, and awful, and profound. Sick and in isolation, Mr. President, you have become a symbol of your own failures. Failures of recklessness, ignorance, arrogance. The same failures you have been inflicting on the rest of us. Get well and please — for the rest of us, who don’t get to go to Walter Reed — get well and get it together."
Tapper’s statement has not yet received a reaction from the president.
Though it has thrown the nation into chaos, the fact that Donald Trump has contracted the coronavirus should not be especially surprising—after all, he has been careless about measures to control the virus, and protect his own health, for months. Nor should it come as a surprise that the White House is offering partial, misleading, and contradictory information. That has been a reliable theme of the Trump presidency.
What does still shock is the recklessness with which Trump treated the health and lives of those closest to him. Despite being potentially exposed to a virus he described in February as “deadly stuff,” the president apparently took no measures to protect his political advisers, aides, and donors, and largely left them in the dark once he had tested positive.
Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, helped prepare Trump in the days leading up to Tuesday night’s debate. He later said that no one at the sessions was wearing a mask. He reportedly learned of Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis only from news reports, and was not informed by the White House. Christie has now tested positive and been admitted to a hospital.
He is in danger of losing his life!
How much longer can you defend this asshole?
Perhaps until each of them becomes sick, or their loved ones. Perhaps till then, or even beyond then.
