WHO: The only thing they accomplished was to increase poverty
What is most interesting about this is that it's not "really" a change in opinion or strategy. When this whole thing started, the idea was the lockdowns were just a means to flatten the curve. There was never any original intention that it would actually work to eliminate or even substantially reduce the amount of casualties.
But the longer we stayed in these lockdowns, the more people became convinced that they could be used to completely mitigate the virus. There was no scientific evidence of this, only that it was an easy sell for a politician to convince a scared public that going out in public was some sort of death trap.
At the end of the day, the numbers will suggest that lock downs did help lower the death toll, but to a very limited and very inconsistent degree. They seemed to work in some places and fail miserably in others. There is simply no solid empirical evidence to make a claim that lock downs made a significant, consistent, and obvious effect. Certainly nothing that would be enough for a scientific theory to be objectively proven to have worked.
The same can be said about the mask mandates. In some states and countries, they seem to be working. But in others, the implementation of the mask mandate has been followed by a significant increase in cases. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for why these numbers differ from area to area. But again, if the mask mandates had a tangible scientific effect, then there should be consistency as to when and where they are used.
The cold truth is that our medical experts were caught flat-footed on this one. We were not prepared for a pandemic such as this, and it's possible to suggest that we never really will be prepared for a pandemic that involves a new virus. These viruses start their carnage immediately, while our medical involvement takes time to work through. It is an impossible situation.

Now they tell us! After pushing lockdowns around the world for months, the World Health Organization has reversed course. WHO's special envoy on COVID-19, David Nabarro, said in a recent interview, "We really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method." He went on to say what lockdown skeptics have been screaming for months: that the main effect of these policies is to devastate economies, and especially the poor. "Look what's happened to smallholder farmers all over the world," he said. "Look what's happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition."
You don't say.
Nabarro did give himself a bit of wiggle room, claiming that "the only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we'd rather not do it." Still, since we're in, what, month seven of these measures, WHO advice to world leaders is now: "Stop with the lockdowns." Someone should tell Joe Biden.
Oh, never you worry about that. They already have November 4 penciled in as World Reopening Party Day.
The article goes on to note that there have been no studies establishing that lockdowns are effective at preventing viral spread-- remember when Studies were absolutely critical? Remember when we couldn't prescribe HCQ to anyone until we had all the Studies completed?
But with lockdowns-- we don't need no stinkin' studies.
The article also notes the WHO pushed for lockdowns in 2020, the year of Trump's reelection campaign.
And now -- whoops. Whoopsie!
The media will of course continue claiming We Love The Science (TM) as they continue pushing for witchdoctor lockdowns with absolutely no studies establishing their safety or effectiveness.

State by state shutdown effectively varies. The states that kept the shutdown effect, had a lower level of infections. The states that eased the shutdown, have a higher percentage of infections.

California is conveniently missing in spite of having one of the highest number of new cases and deaths consistently for the past several weeks. New York and New Jersey are still number one and two in terms of most deaths. Massachusetts and Connecticut are also not listed and rank three and four in most deaths.
This is an attempt to once again deflect the 50,000 deaths alone in New York and New Jersey, by suggesting that the "real" way we should measure the effects of Covid isn't in how many people "die" - but what is the "rate of infection" today.
Why are liberals no longer concerned with how many people are dying?
This is just another GREAT example of how stupid politics are right now and why I didn't miss a second of ignoring it all together.

Scott, Republicans fight against economic shutdowns because they damaged the economy. The President has caused the situation because he is the most incompetent person ever elected President.

Between those four states, they have a grand whopping total of 1575 total deaths (all together from the start). Between New York & New Jersey, they were seeing that every single day back in their peak.
When you had almost no infections and a small population, it's takes almost nothing to show an increase. Especially when a place like South Dakota is now testing almost 3000 people a day (when they had been testing only a few hundred).
But as someone who also lived in South Dakota and still lives next door. The people of South Dakota are pretty damned pleased with how their Governor handled things.
Of course, most people like being treated as adults.
Just not west coast liberals. You guys need to be told what to do!

Patients in intensive care units were also up to 186 Saturday, compared with 120 people a month ago, an increase of 55 percent.
Fatalities, however, continue to remain low, with five deaths reported statewide Saturday.
