Danish study shows mask use generally ineffective in reducing the spread of Covid

Wearing a mask reduces risk of infection by 0.3 %

About 4,860 participants completed the study. The researchers had hoped that masks would cut the infection rate by half among wearers. Instead, 42 people in the mask group, or 1.8 percent, got infected, compared with 53 in the unmasked group, or 2.1 percent. The difference was not statistically significant.

A couple of things things to note. First, the Danish group had a hard time getting anyone to publish their study. Not because there was anything scientifically or statistically wrong with the study. Just because certain people don't like rocking the boat on conventional wisdom. In other words, the study was being "censored" just as so many other inconvenient facts are "censored" in 2020.

So secondly, this study is actually several weeks old and only now have they been able to share their results with the general public. The results are not encouraging.  The reality is that there has been no real studies that show mask wearing is the silver bullet that our leaders suggest it is, and this study represents the largest randomly controlled study on the subject so far.

I find it hard to understand why such a study has to be hidden from public view, especially in America where we are supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. But new conventional wisdom in liberal circles is that we all must "lay down" and accept what our elected leadership (politicians) tell us. While many of these leaders will continue to pretend that they are "listening to science" they are simply listening to the "opinions" of certain "experts" while discounting the "opinions" of other "experts. Listening to "experts" is not "listening to science" when there is no scientific consensus between the "experts".

The issue right now is that we are entering "cold and flu" season. Since the common cold is actually a coronavirus, it would make sense that Covid-19 will start to flair up as well. There is 99.9999% factual reason to believe that the recent surge is 99.9999% tied to the change in weather in the upper midwest and great lakes area that has been seeing the huge surge in infections. The fact that winter has come early here in the upper midwest probably makes matters worse.

On the flip side, there is almost no reason to believe that the recent surge has come because of the poor behavior of Americans. The surge seems to not care to what degree your state is in lockdown or mandates, but rather has been working it's way through a variety of areas where the weather has been changing. Which means that heavy handed politicians telling blaming the general public for the surge and demanding that we cower to new regulations and mandates, is not logical or likely very helpful.

When a politician starts to lock things down or starts to shut down parts of the economy in the name of safety, we know 100% for sure that there will be negative effects. We will see negative financial effects, more mental health issues, an increase in other physical health issues, and ultimately even a rise in suicides. We also know that we will see more domestic violence, more divorce, more crime, and more social unrest. Our leadership demands we put up with this on the off-chance that Covid can be contained by these mandates (when there seems to be little or no statistical evidence that it can be).

I wish that our leaders really did "listen to science" or at least listen to common sense. But alas, that is not what we have in 2020.

Critics were quick to note the study’s limitations, among them that the findings depended heavily on participants reporting their own test results and behavior, at a time when both mask-wearing and infection were rare in Denmark.

People were not infected in proportions to the rate of infection in the United States

Show me the actual study that you are relying on that shows that masks "do" work? This Danish Study is not the first that has shown very little (if any) statistical evidence that they do.

The regular (non n-95 paper or cloth masks) actually at one time held a warning label on them that they were not designed to stop the spread of infection (because they are not designed as such).

The more expensive medical masks used by medical personnel and are supposed to be fairly effective in preventing infection. But at my clinics the nurse and doctors are wearing both the N-95 and the plastic face guards. Obviously out medical doctors do not trust the masks to prevent them from being infected in spite of using the best of the masks available... Why should we trust the 20 for $5.00 masks or a cloth covering.

These masks are designed more for people who work in industries where they see construction dust, asbestos, etc. They are simply not scientifically built to keep out actual germs. It's like putting up a chain link fence to prevent mosquitos from entering your yard. That is the "actual science" once you get past the political portion of it.

and there's a demonstrable fucking LIE...

The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.

Adopting measures to protect the vulnerable should be the central aim of public health responses to COVID-19. By way of example, nursing homes should use staff with acquired immunity and perform frequent PCR testing of other staff and all visitors. Staff rotation should be minimized. Retired people living at home should have groceries and other essentials delivered to their home. When possible, they should meet family members outside rather than inside. A comprehensive and detailed list of measures, including approaches to multi-generational households, can be implemented, and is well within the scope and capability of public health professionals.

Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.

How well do you think that would go over?

It would be one thing if the Danish Study was an "outlier" and other studies are showing the masks to be working. But it's not an "outlier". There are no randomly controlled scientific studies showing anything different.

Just a few people providing opinions that are different from the opinions that they provided us a few months ago (eg: Dr Fauci demanding that masks do not work and the original warning labels on paper masks saying they do not help stop the spread of infections).

Sweden has admitted its coronavirus immunity predictions were wrong as cases soar across the country
Thomas Colson

Fri, November 13, 2020, 8:00 AM

Sweden's chief epidemiologist has admitted that the country is now experiencing a second wave of coronavirus despite predicting that the country's no-lockdown policy would prevent another surge.

Tegnell had suggested that case numbers would be "quite low" in the autumn compared to other European countries which imposed lockdowns.

However, the latest figures show Sweden is experiencing higher levels of coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths than its neighbours, relative to population size.

"We see community spread in many regions simultaneously right now," Tegnell said, according to Reuters.
_____________

Sweden's chief epidemiologist has admitted that the country is experiencing a second surge in coronavirus cases despite previously predicting that the number of infections in the autumn would be "quite low" due to the country's no-lockdown policy.

"In the autumn there will be a second wave. Sweden will have a high level of immunity and the number of cases will probably be quite low," Anders Tegnell told the Financial Times back in May.

However, the latest figures show Sweden is experiencing higher levels of infections, hospitalizations and deaths than its neighbours, relative to its population size, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Sweden recorded 4,658 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, according to official figures reported by Reuters, with new daily cases having surged in recent weeks.

Hospitalizations have also increased dramatically, with over 1000 patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals, a 60% increase from last week. The figures were reported by state broadcaster SVT and cited by the Guardian.

The death rate from coronavirus in Sweden is now one of the highest in the world when adjusted for population size.

Tegnell, who has become known for designing Sweden's anti-lockdown policy, admitted this week that the country was seeing significant spread of the virus across the country.

"I don't think the definition is that important, but we see community spread in many regions simultaneously right now," Tegnall told a press conference, according to Reuters.

Sweden's public health agency also acknowledged that the high number of cases seen in the country in the first wave had not protected it in the second. IOW, HERD IMMUNITY FAILED.

"We also see that many other countries in Europe that had a big effect during the spring, that had lockdowns and now again have lockdowns also see a big increase now," Sara Byfors from the Public Health Agency of Sweden told the Financial Times.

"So it seems to follow this pattern that if you had a lot of cases during the spring you also see a lot of cases now... We don't know why this is."

The Swedish government initially refused to adopt strict measures to tackle the coronavirus, relying only on voluntary guidance to try and curb the spread of infections.

However, the surge in infections has prompted the country to adopt harsher measures in recent weeks.

The country has moved to ban the sale of alcohol in pubs and bars after 10pm and Tegnell this week told Swedes that the government may be forced to introduce travel restrictions across the country "right before Christmas," according to the BBC.

AND BY THE WAY, ignore rrb.

CONCLUSION

The study provides evidence that US states mandating the use of face masks in public had a greater decline in daily COVID-19 growth rates after issuing these mandates compared with states that did not issue mandates. These effects were observed conditional on other existing social distancing measures and were independent of the CDC recommendation to wear face covers issued April 3, 2020. As international and state governments begin to relax social distancing restrictions, and considering the high likelihood of a second COVID-19 wave in the fall and winter of 2020,30 requiring the use of face masks in public could help in reducing COVID-19 spread.

A greater decline is not a better infection rate.

Which only really proved that they had higher rates to begin with, and were still showing a higher rate of infection even after the mandates.

Otherwise the study would have concluded that they had better infection rates (not just a greater decline).

More Americans Happy About Trump Loss Than Biden Win

A new Monmouth poll finds that 34% of the country is “happy” that Donald Trump lost the election – which is slightly more than the 26% who feels the same about Joe Biden winning.

The poll also finds a majority of Americans are confident that the election was conducted fairly, although most Trump voters think Biden’s victory is due to voter fraud.

Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Adm. Brett Giroir has done a round of interviews warning that the country's situation is “tenuous” but that Americans can indeed control the virus by practicing what he calls the “3W's” — watching your distance from others, wearing a mask and frequently washing your hands. @realdonaldtrump will fire him soon.

White House coronavirus adviser Dr. Deborah Birx, touring the states to raise prevention awareness, lamented in Bismarck, North Dakota, that she hadn't seen such disdain for mask wearing elsewhere. "We find that deeply unfortunate because you don’t know who’s infected and you don’t know if you’re infected yourself,” she told reporters. The state's positive test rate is 11%, above the level indicating widespread transmission.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar, for his part, has a profile photo of himself masked up on his Twitter account.

Why don't you do your own research before spouting off?

And yeah, Reverend... if this epidemiologist was so influential, then why has the actual Government of Sweden not been listening to him. This is the same guy who has stated for months that his country did it wrong, but somehow the country still hasn't imposed all of those restrictions he feels are necessary.

Even the restrictions listed in your quote (closing bars restaurants, etc at 10:00) are not actually implemented in Sweden. the article just implicates that they are being considered. We'll see if they actually do anything like that.

But the reality is that Sweden (about the same population as your state) has not seen more than 30 death in day since June. In the past week, there daily death count has been 17, 12, 15, 10, 12, 17, 2...

We didn't break 100 known cases till March (almost all related to a cruise ship and two nursing homes in Seattle). So it really doesn't matter what we knew in theory about Covid. There was nothing we could do to stop the spread of a virus that was not yet in the U.S.

You act as if the President had some sort of "superpower" that he refused to use that would have otherwise stopped the spread of a virus before it got here.

Hint: The only way you stop the spread of a virus that is not here is to prevent people from coming and going... which he tried to do (and was fought at every turn) or otherwise have a vaccine (which we could not have had since the virus was new).

If you believe we should have had a mask mandate, then blame Fauci who stated unequivocally that masks wouldn't help and our mask manufactures even had a disclaimer that they would not work to prevent the spread of infections.

Otherwise... tell us what he should have done?

You are arguing that President Trump would have convinced you to listen to him and ignore Fauci and other medical experts... and then you would have started to wear a mask (just because Trump told you to) and somehow (in spite of no actual evidence that they work) - it would have suddenly saved thousands of lives?

He (and other Democrats) would have listened to Trump because he "knew" back in February that it was a big deal.

iden Predicts ‘Brick Walls’ If GOP Keeps Senate
2:54 pm
President-elect Joe Biden acknowledged the challenging political landscape he could face in Washington next year, predicting that he would run into “brick walls” in the Senate if Republicans controlled the chamber, the New York Times reports.

Said Biden, on a private video call: “We’re going to run into some real brick walls initially in the Senate unless we’re able to turn around Georgia and pick up those two seats, but even then it’s going to be hard. But I believe, I believe I know the place. I believe we can ultimately bring it together.”

Jeez wasn’t the pederast lecturing us about all the greedy corporatists and how Biden would rectify that

I thought of Dutton when I read that Joe Biden has appointed “corporate friendly” people to key staff positions. For example, Ron Klain, who will be chief of staff, was a lobbyist for a major law firm. Apparently, he represented big tech companies, along with Fannie Mae and drug manufacturer ImClone when it was being investigated by Congress.

Similarly, Steve Ricchetti, who will be counselor to the new president, co-owned a lobbying firm that worked for Eli Lily, Novartis and Pfizer.

In addition, according to Tucker Carlson, Joe Biden’s transition advisers include executives from Uber, Visa, Capital One, Airbnb, Amazon, the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, and the nonprofit run by Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

California Medical Association officials were among the guests seated next to Gov. Gavin Newsom at a top California political operative’s opulent birthday dinner at the French Laundry restaurant this month.

CEO Dustin Corcoran and top CMA lobbyist Janus Norman both joined the dinner at the French Laundry, an elite Napa fine dining restaurant, to celebrate the 50th birthday of lobbyist and longtime Newsom adviser Jason Kinney, a representative of the powerful interest group confirmed Wednesday morning.

Both Norman and Corcoran are friends of Kinney, as is Newsom, who referred this week to his 20-year friendship with Kinney. In a photo obtained by Fox LA, Norman is clearly visible seated to Newsom's left.

The presence of CMA brass could amplify criticisms of the dinner occurring despite coronavirus restrictions that have limited Californians’ movements and constrained businesses. While Newsom and Kinney’s lobbying firm have said the meal abided by public health rules, it has struck a chord with Californians who have assailed the upscale soiree as hypocritical as coronavirus cases surge.

The state has issued guidelines prohibiting more than three households from gathering privately — a limit clearly exceeded by the French Laundry dinner. However, the state has intentionally allowed restaurants to seat people from more than three households together.

Please explain how states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Illinois who have the most robust mandates and restrictions in place are showing so many more cases and deaths without actually changing any policy?

If all that matters is whether or not you wear a mask, wash your hands, or otherwise social distance... then why are they seeing more cases even as their restrictions continue to get more hard core?

Wouldn't the mask mandate have prevented this (if these masks actually worked)?

Or do you truly believe that masks only work if the President supports them?

GEEZUS!

Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors said in a newly surfaced video from 2015 that she and her fellow organizers are “trained Marxists” – making clear their movement’s ideological foundation, according to a report.

Cullors, 36, was the protégé of Eric Mann, former agitator of the Weather Underground domestic terror organization, and spent years absorbing the Marxist-Leninist ideology that shaped her worldview, Breitbart News reported.

“The first thing, I think, is that we actually do have an ideological frame. Myself and Alicia in particular are trained organizers,” she said, referring to BLM co-founder Alicia Garza.

“We are trained Marxists. We are super-versed on, sort of, ideological theories. And I think that what we really tried to do is build a movement that could be utilized by many, many black folk,” Cullors added in the interview with Jared Ball of The Real News Network.

While promoting her book “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir” in 2018, Cullors described her introduction to and support for Marxist ideology.

I just like to remind people that this virus is killing people no matter what policies the Governors put in place, and the idea that wearing masks was going to end the virus was little more than wishful pie in the sky thinking...

The carnage happening in your state (another 151 deaths today alone) is proof positive that no matter how hard your state tries to control the masses with regulations, mandates, and restrictions...

That mother nature is going to win that battle 99 out of 100 times.

Until we have a vaccine .. we will continue to see a rise in cases (or at least higher rates of cases). Provided that Covid doesn't mutate when people are vaccinated, that should reduce it in a very real manner.

What is happening right now should make people seriously consider weather the drop in deaths over the summer was because of how well we "mitigated it" (as our experts suggested) or if it was because "cold and flu" season ended.

The CDC has for some reason decided this flu never peaked, when it clearly did in mid April

While seasonal influenza (flu) viruses are detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but influenza activity often begins to increase in October. Most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May.

The figure below shows peak flu activity in the United States by month for the 1982-1983 through 2017-2018 flu seasons. The “peak month of flu activity” is the month with the highest percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza virus infection during that influenza season. During this 36-year period, flu activity most often peaked in February (15 seasons), followed by December (7 seasons), January (6 seasons) and March (6 seasons).

When is the flu season in the United States?

In the United States, flu season occurs in the fall and winter. While influenza viruses circulate year-round, most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, but activity can last as late as May. The overall health impact (e.g., infections, hospitalizations, and deaths) of a flu season varies from season to season. CDC collects, compiles, and analyzes information on influenza activity year-round in the United States and produces FluView, a weekly surveillance report, and FluView Interactive, which allows for more in-depth exploration of influenza surveillance data. The Weekly U.S. Influenza Summary Update is updated each week from October through May.

Instead, the White House is barreling ahead. A second official tells CNN their goal is to set so many fires that it will be hard for the Biden administration to put them all out.

“It’s a strategy that radically breaks with past practice, could raise national security risks and will surely compound challenges for the Biden team — but it could also backfire. Analysts and people close to the Biden transition argue the Trump team may act so aggressively that reversing some of its steps will earn Biden easy goodwill points and negotiating power with adversaries.”

North Dakota has not required masking. It has the highest infection rate on the planet.

+1,956 lives lost today...

Nearly all the experts are reasonably sure that far fewer lives would have been lost over the course of this entire pandemic if more mask wearing had been effectively encouraged from the first.

You can find "experts" who will tell you anything, including some "experts" who will tell you that Trump legitimately won and Biden legitimately lost this last election.

Prove a negative?? You never darkened even a community college’s threshold

BTW I’ll continue to see proof during “cold and flu” season

These are such stupid arguments.

Anybody is a fool not to take advantage of any advice that could be helpful in slowing the advance of this virus.

"But it will destroy the economy," you say.

Yes, just as Fauci predicted, the economy will ultimately be hurt even more when we open up too quickly and then have to close down again, which is exactly what is happening everywhere, but especially in those areas that followed Trump's desire to open everything up even more quickly.

He wanted packed churches last Easter.

Discover the facts behind the myths about coronavirus masks.

Mask Safety and EffectivenessMyth: Cloth masks don't protect you.

Fact: Cloth face masks are effective. They create a barrier between your mouth and nose and those around you. This makes it more difficult for the droplets that spread coronavirus through coughs, sneezes and talking to reach other people.

Cloth masks mainly keep you from unknowingly spreading the disease to others, but some studies indicate that they may help protect you from large droplets and serve as an indirect reminder to avoid touching your face.

This is why wearing a cloth mask inside all retail stores and public transportation has been mandatory in Maryland since April 2020. And as more services such as getting a haircut or eating in a restaurant are being allowed, it is as important as ever to continue wearing a mask. We're all in this together.

Myth: Other masks are more effective than cloth masks.

Fact: Different types of masks serve different purposes, but cloth masks are highly effective for the general public. The average person who is not working in a medical environment with COVID-19 patients should wear a cloth mask to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers.

Myth: Masks can cause carbon dioxide (CO2) build-up.

Fact: Some people have suggested that carbon dioxide from exhaling gets trapped under the cloth and can make you sick. This isn't true. Properly fitted masks offer adequate airflow while still covering your nose and mouth. This makes the accumulation of carbon dioxide impossible.

However, people with breathing problems, children under age 2, and those who can't remove the mask without assistance should not wear one.

How to Wear MasksMyth: The way you wear a mask is not important.

Fact: Wearing a mask correctly is the key to making it effective at preventing the spread of the coronavirus. According to the CDC, a cloth face mask needs to have the following in order to be effective:

Cover both your nose and mouthFit snugly but comfortably against the sides of the faceBe secured with ties or ear loopsHave multiple layers of fabricAllow for unrestricted breathingAble to be laundered and machine dried without damage or shape changesWhere and When to Wear a MaskMyth: You only need to wear a mask if you feel sick.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Fact: According to the CDC, studies suggest that many people who have coronavirus are asymptomatic, meaning they show no symptoms. You may have the disease and unknowingly spread it to others, including those with underlying conditions who have a higher coronavirus risk and are more vulnerable to severe illness. Asymptomatic carriers can increase the disease's spread if they aren't taking proper precautions, including wearing a mask, washing their hands frequently and social distancing.

Myth: If you're home, you don't need to wear a mask.

Fact: In most cases, this is true. However, if you do feel sick, have mild symptoms, and live with others, it's important to wear a mask to protect them.

Do not leave your home. Try to isolate yourself from healthy people you live with. Be sure to wear a mask if you leave your quarantine room or if they enter the room you're quarantining in.

Myth: If you've had coronavirus, you don't need a mask.

Fact: If you've had a coronavirus before or had an antibody test come up positive, you may believe that you don't need to wear a mask. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no way to know whether having coronavirus once provides immunity from the virus again or how long that your immunity might last. This means that you could potentially catch the disease again and spread it to others.

Everyone should wear a cloth mask when in public unless they have breathing problems, are under age two, or can't remove the mask without assistance.

Myth: You don't need to wear a mask outside.

Fact: At this time, being outside is generally considered safer than being inside. When taking a stroll or participating in other outdoor activities by yourself or with people you live with, a mask isn't required.

However, when you find it difficult to maintain at least six feet of distance from people you don't live with – such as exercising on a sidewalk or eating out at a restaurant – it's important to have your mask on. You should always have your mask on hand when you leave your home.

Myth: If I'm wearing a mask, I don't need to stay home.

Fact: As we each make decisions about going out safely, masks are just one strategy in a toolbox of different prevention measures.

Wearing a mask is highly effective and can make your daily life safer for those around you, but it's not a permission slip to "return to normal."

It's important to stay home when you can and continue practicing other coronavirus prevention measures like social distancing to help reduce the spread.

The change in weather is the cause of the infection rate increases. More of the viruses are transmitted in colder air. Warmer air kills the virus. That is why the rate is increasing.

Those are facts not opinions.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Cold air does not kill germs. The cold can actually make it easier for viruses to spread, since most viruses are covered by a protective capsule that melts in the heat.Cold air can also dry our nasal passages, which leaves sinuses vulnerable to infection from viruses.

Masks and not perfect but they greatly decrease the transmitting of the virus.

Declaring them as useless is dangerous and already has lead to more deaths.

Masks are irrelevant for 99+% of us. It’s a virus it’s here forever, as I have definitively stated since March, all you’re doing is pissing up a rope

You, pedo and fatty really need to take remedial biology

Infections and death will surge until sometime late March mid April as always happens during the “cold and flu” season. Oh and when we get a vaccine for Covid, they’ll continue to surge and fall during “cold and flu” season.

If you take a test and you are negative, you can be exposed by someone else, you won't have symptoms of 3 to 5 days. If you don't wear a mask, you can infect anyone else.

It's not every day that a sitting state attorney general faces a criminal investigation, though for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), it's become quite a bit more common than it should be. The Associated Press reported overnight:

The FBI is investigating allegations that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton broke the law in using his office to benefit a wealthy donor, according to two people with knowledge of the probe. Federal agents are looking into claims by former members of Paxton's staff that the high-profile Republican committed bribery, abuse of office and other crimes to help Austin real estate developer Nate Paul, the people told The Associated Press.

To be sure, when a state attorney general faces an FBI corruption investigation, it's the sort of thing that's bound to get the AG's attention. In Paxton's case, however, his attention will be divided between this and his many other scandals.

Circling back to our earlier coverage, Paxton was indicted a few years ago on felony securities fraud charges. Last month, his troubles got much worse, when members of Paxton's own team made multiple criminal allegations against him.

The Texas Republican responded by retaliating against his colleagues.

Around the same time, the Associated Press reported that Paxton "had an extramarital affair with a woman whom he later recommended for a job with the wealthy donor now at the center of criminal allegations against him."

All of which suggests that the Texas attorney general probably needs a good legal defense team.

But let's not overlook the national context: In late July, Donald Trump's re-election campaign announced the formation of a Lawyers for Trump group, to be led in part by -- you guessed it -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

As of this morning, the Texas Republican is still listed as one of the top leaders of Lawyers for Trump, despite the fact that the president lost, and despite the fact Paxton appears to be burdened by a series of dramatic scandals.
