Why are there still five Congressional races left uncalled?
UPDATE: The buzz now is that New York 22 is looking more and more like another GOP pickup as the major Democratic strong hold county has completed counting and Claudia Tenney is still up by around 8500 votes over incumbent Anthony Brindisi. (She went into the mail in counts up by around 22,000). Even the liberal NY media is suggesting that there are not enough votes to make this up, with the majority of remaining ballots coming from a Tenney Stronghold. How odd it is to have the "last" of the votes not coming from a Democratic stronghold where they seem to alway find "just enough" votes to squeak out the victory.

I can sort of get where you have two races (CA-25 and Iowa-2) separated by a couple hundred ballots or less. Those will likely go to recounts. Recounts can take some time, so I guess I can understand that.
But you currently have a race in New York (22) where there still appears to be 17,000 absentee ballots and as many as 3000 provisional ballots uncounted nearly two weeks later. At least one county has not even started counting absentee and provisional ballots yet? WTF?
They were required legally to have all ballots in hand by the 10th in order for them to be valid. How is it that we are six days beyond and no counting has even started in some counties. The Republican leads by a little over 10,000 votes with approximately 20,000 (including possible provisional ballots) left to count (all in Trump leaning counties) and the Democrat would need about 77% of the remaining ballots to pull ahead. While that seems unlikely, who knows with the way "mail in ballots" are going these days.
Why is California 21 still uncalled? It's a 2000 vote lead for the Republican and they have been sitting at 99% for over a week. Where is that last 1% being hidden? Again, not like anyone can be expecting mail in ballots two weeks after the fact and certainly not 2000 of them for on candidate?
How about New Jersey 7,where the incumbent Democrat leads by nearly 5000 votes with 97% in? Why is there still 3% to count and why is that we believe that this 5000 vote lead will not stand? When and where will this one be over?

A video of the exchange went viral. It summed up the frustration many feel over the way progressive policies so often benefit select groups, while subtly undermining others. Saving money to send your children to college used to be considered a hallmark of middle-class responsibility. By subsidizing people who run up large debts, Warren’s policy would penalize those who took that responsibility seriously. “You’re laughing at me,” the man said, when Warren seemed to wave off his concerns. “That’s exactly what you’re doing. We did the right thing and we get screwed.”
That father was expressing an emotion growing more common these days: he felt like a chump. Feeling like a chump doesn’t just mean being upset that your taxes are rising or annoyed that you’re missing out on some windfall. It’s more visceral than that. People feel like chumps when they believe that they’ve played a game by the rules, only to discover that the game is rigged. Not only are they losing, they realize, but their good sportsmanship is being exploited. The players flouting the rules are the ones who get the trophy. Like that Iowa dad, the chumps of modern America feel that the life choices they’re most proud of—working hard, taking care of their families, being good citizens—aren’t just undervalued, but scorned.

re: NY-22, i think there are still something like 13K military/absentee ballots outstanding, and Tenney did enjoy a 20,000 vote lead that's been almost cut in half in recent days. i don't think this signals a momentum shift to her opponent, but the district does include Ithaca NY; home of Cornell U., and as we like to say about Ithaca - "It's ten square miles surrounded by reality."

According to former President Barack Obama, the U.S. faces a tough battle to reverse a culture of division and “truth decay” that has only been accelerated by his successor, President Donald Trump.
In a “60 Minutes” interview that aired on Sunday, Obama was asked by CBS’ Scott Pelley what he meant by a passage in his new book, “A Promised Land,” in which he wrote: “Our democracy seems to be teetering on the brink of a crisis.”
“We have gone through a presidency that disregarded a whole host of basic institutional norms, expectations we had for a president that had been observed by Republicans and Democrats previously,” Obama said.
“And maybe most importantly, and most disconcertingly, what we’ve seen is what some people call truth decay, something that’s been accelerated by outgoing President Trump, the sense that not only do we not have to tell the truth, but the truth doesn’t even matter.”
“Truth decay” is a phrase coined by researchers at the nonpartisan RAND Corporation think tank to describe “the diminishing role of facts and analysis in American public life.” A report about the term was on Obama’s 2018 summer reading list.
In an earlier interview with the BBC, Obama said Trump’s successor Joe Biden faces an enormous task in beginning to reverse the culture of “crazy conspiracy theories,” anger and resentment that has been amplified by some media outlets, “turbocharged” by social media, and boosted by Trump, who he said was willing to fan divisions because it was good for his politics.
“It’ll take more than one election to reverse those trends,” he says.
In Sunday’s interview, Obama also reflected on Trump’s refusal to accept his election loss, his persistent and baseless attacks on the electoral process, and the failure of many GOP officials to condemn it.
“I’m more troubled by the fact that other Republican officials who clearly know better are going along with this, are humoring him in this fashion,” he said. “It is one more step in delegitimizing not just the incoming Biden administration, but democracy generally.
“And that’s a dangerous path. We would never accept that out of our own kids behaving that way if they lost, right? Even before Biden was projected to win the 2020 election, Trump and his supporters launched a bevvy of lawsuits aimed at disqualifying ballots in states Biden narrowly picked up. Those suits have slowly been dropped or dismissed, and on Monday, a slew of swing-state drops have all but eradicated Trump's chances of changing the election outcome before the Electoral College finalizes it, CNN reports.
Using a similar strategy and backed by conservative attorney James Bopp Jr., voters in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin all filed lawsuits challenging the legality of some votes cast in those states. Republicans Pressure Georgia Official to Discard Ballots

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) said that he has come under increasing pressure from fellow Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), to question the validity of legally cast absentee ballots in an effort to reverse President Trump’s narrow loss in the state, the Washington Post reports.
The atmosphere has grown so contentious, Raffensperger said, that both he and his wife have received death threats, including a text to him that read: “You better not botch this recount. Your life depends on it.”
The normally mild-mannered Raffensperger saved his harshest language for Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), who is leading the president’s effort to prove fraud in Georgia and whom Raffensperger called a “liar” and a “charlatan.”

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States passed 11 million on Sunday. It took 100 days for the nation to log its first 1 million cases; it took just six days to get from 10 million to 11 million.
The number of people being hospitalized with covid-19 is also higher. Fearing that the worsening crisis will lead to even more preventable deaths, the governors of several states implemented new restrictions to help slow the spread. The residents of North Dakota are now required to wear masks. Colleges, high schools, workplaces and in-person dining are closing for three weeks in Michigan. Indoor social gatherings with people outside one’s household are now prohibited in Washington, along with indoor dining at restaurants and bars.
The governors of Michigan and Washington appealed to the federal government to step in with more help for struggling businesses in light of the new restrictions. In response, White House coronavirus adviser Scott Atlas urged people to reject their states’ public health guidelines. “The only way this stops is if people rise up,” Atlas said in a tweet Sunday night.

A wide array of groups from the retail, tourism and hospitality industries are trying to battle new restrictions to preserve their ability to continue to operate [no matter how many people sicken and die].

Kroger has temporarily reverted to limiting purchases on items such as hand sanitizer, toilet paper and disinfecting wipes. Walmart stores are metering customers by only allowing a certain number inside at a time.
Joe Biden may have won the presidency pledging a national mask mandate and a science-based approach to controlling the pandemic, but Republicans made substantial gains in down-ballot races in the upper Midwest. Analysts say it's likely because of their anti-restriction approach, and now GOP leaders are using it to claim a mandate for their style of pandemic management.

The morgue in El Paso is so overwhelmed with bodies that inmates at the county jail there are being pressed into service as helpers, pending arrival of the National Guard. Yet Trump spent Monday morning on Twitter, pitifully howling “I won the Election!” about a contest he clearly and decisively lost.
We have reached the point in the pandemic that epidemiologists warned about months ago. They begged Trump to do everything he could to push infection rates as low as possible before autumn arrived and cooler temperatures forced people indoors, where the virus is transmitted much more easily.
