Shouldn't there be some consistency here?

These are some (but not all) of the states have have statewide mask mandates. Almost none of the 50 states are "mandate free" as many states are still leaving it up to the local municipalities to make their own decisions. In some states, only the larger cities (where the virus is more common) are you seeing mandates, but mandates do exist.

But one might believe that if a mask mandate was the solution to our problem, then we would see the fruits of those efforts with a consistently low infection rate? 

Why would Maine (for instance) have a mandate that is providing a sparse rate of infection of 14.1/100,000? Whereas Minnesota, where masks are mandated everywhere in public that you cannot social distance and completely mandated while indoors in any public area, we have a rate of infection right now of 120/100,000.  

Same exact mask mandate, but a infection rate that is 8.5 times higher than Maine.  

What I can tell you is that Minnesotans are following the mandate. The bar and restaurant scene is scarce, people I know are not planning holiday get-togethers (my family is scheduling a Thanksgiving Zoom meeting).  Nothing has changed in how we are behaving, other than being more vigilant over the past few weeks. But yet, our rates continue to grow almost exponentially as the virus is now making it's way into the upper midwest and great lakes area. 

In fact, in recent days we have passed up several states (such as Nebraska and Wisconsin) which have lesser degrees of regulation and mandates. 

There is no logical conclusion here to draw other than the virus is spreading in a manner not consistent with which states are mandating mask wearing and which states are not. It appears to be moving by region (and has since ever since it started in March). If mask mandates were the silver bullet here, then the mandates would be reducing the rates of infection everywhere that people are following them. 

But when the same solution to a particular problem creates a variety of results that are off in some cases by a factor of 8.5 - then it would appear fairly apparent that it is not a solution that is working. 

Now I am not telling people that we "should not" be wearing masks. Perhaps if they only help by that 0.3% that the Danish study suggests, that it may still be worth it. What I am telling people is that you cannot blame 120/100,000 infection rate in Minnesota on the bad orange man or a lack of policy or effort. 

The policy is embedded here in Minnesota and has been followed for months. We have a 120/100,000 rate of infection. The fifth highest rate in the country. Draw your own conclusion.

It was reported that in the rural parts of in our county, McLean, IL, the covid infection rates have surpassed the rate in our metropolitan Bloomingon-Normal cities (pop. 173,828).

That is surely because more people in the rural areas have disdained wearing masks, etc.

The liberal bastion of mandates and restrictions of deep blue Minnesota reported 7863 cases today and 72 deaths today.

Of course 70% of these are over the age of 70 and a similar amount will have come from long term care facilities... but who is keeping track of that anymore.

Our deep blue state is currently in the top 5 for highest rate of infection and will likely be shooting up the charts in other statistics (as things simply do not get any better).

Our rate of change in new cases (24.4%) is considerably higher than our neighbors to the west (Dakotas - 17%) south (Iowa - 15%) and east (Wisconsin - 16%) - meaning it's likely to get worse....

and we have the strictest mandates in the region!

How can that be?

Why did huge numbers of people in the USA move to the suburbs after WWII? During the 1920s and early 1930s people either lived in rural areas or in the center city. Most of today’s suburbs were farmland during the 1940s. Suddenly after WWII, suburbs began a dramatic growth. The surge was so explosive that when the USA did the 1950 census it began classifying urban people a new way. Each person was classified as living either inside the central city or outside the central city. In 1950 the breakdown was 60% living in the central city and 40% living in the suburbs. By 1980 the percentages reversed with 40% living in the central city and 60% living in the suburbs.

Understanding why people began moving to the suburbs is important. The migration had a huge impact on U.S. energy use (suburban living encourages driving; urban living encourages walking) and schooling (suburban schools are often superior to urban schools). Understanding the movement also helps answer if governments should try to rebuild or simply raze problematic inner cities like Detroit or Buffalo.

A construction worker who died after plunging from a 10-foot ladder in Croatia was actually killed by the coronavirus, doctors said in a report.

The unnamed 51-year-old man fell into a yard while building a home earlier this year and suffered cuts and bruises to his head, according to the Journal of Forensic Pathology.

The builder was declared dead at the scene, but an autopsy later revealed that COVID-19 had indirectly caused the accident because effects of the illness were disorienting, the journal notes.

During the autopsy, doctors found that large swaths of the man’s lungs were blocked. The finding led scientists to conclude that he suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) — a life-threatening condition that can be caused by COVID-19.

“Based on all findings, the death was ruled as natural, caused by COVID-19,” the report notes. The man also tested positive for the virus.

Doctors later determined that the illness, which keeps air from flowing to the lungs, had likely caused his fall, according to the journal. Ultimately, the death must be recorded as a COVID-19 fatality under World Health Organization guidelines, scientists said.

USA TODAY'S coverage of the 2020 election continues this week as states prepare to finish certifying their vote counts after President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the hard-fought presidential race. President Donald Trump has yet to concede the race as Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris prepare to take office in January.

President-elect Joe Biden says he has chosen a Treasury nominee who will please both progressives and moderates, and more personnel announcements are expected during the next week.

"I’ve made that decision," he told reporters after a meeting with governors. "You’ll hear that just before or just after Thanksgiving.”

Ron Klain, Biden’s choice to become White House chief of staff, told CNN that two dozen White House officials would be named this month, with Cabinet members announced around Thanksgiving. Biden named Klain last week and nine officials this week.

“He is hard at work on this, he is talking to people every day, he is consulting broadly,” Klain said. “As he said, you’ll start to see at least one, if not more, of these Cabinet announcements right before or right after Thanksgiving.”

Senate confirmation for Cabinet nominees requires FBI background investigations, which can’t proceed until the General Services Administration recognizes Biden as the president-elect.

“This is a block not just to our transition, but to the Senate doing its constitutional duty as well,” Klain said.

In his press conference today President-elect Joe Biden said President Donald Trump’s inviting Michigan officials to the White House to discuss election results in the state that Biden won is “irresponsible” and “outrageous.”

“What the president is doing now is really -- it’s going to be another incident where he will go down in history as being one of the most irresponsible presidents in American history,” Biden said. “It’s not even within the norm at all. There are questions about whether it’s even legal.

“We’ve won Michigan,” Biden said. “It’s going to be certified.”

Biden said he couldn’t speak about Trump’s motivation.

“It’s hard to fathom how this man thinks,” Biden said. “It’s just outrageous what he’s doing.”

THE FACTS: No, it’s not true. Powell is referencing a fictitious story that a server hosting evidence of voting irregularities in the Nov. 3 U.S. election was in Germany.

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas claimed last week that “U.S. Army forces” seized a server from a Frankfurt office. An Army spokesman described allegations that the Army had recovered servers in Germany as false.

Through this corrupt era one of the common refrains has been, “that’s why or how we got Trump.” Usually it is whatever it is the person didn’t like before Trump rebranded as the bad thing that got us Trump. But on display today is one of the real reasons ‘we got Trump.’ It’s not the deepest reason but it is a critical, critical part of the equation. It’s also why Donald Trump was able to careen through the leading candidates of the Republican party so easily in 2016.

It’s simply this: for years Republicans had relied on feeding their supporters a diet of scare tactics, conspiracy theories, nonsense, racism and crazy to sustain partisan support, engagement and intensity. The party’s leaders enabled it. They were sustained by it. But they always kept a certain distance from it.

Over time though the balance began to shift. By the late Obama years the congressional Republican party was actually run from the House Freedom Caucus, a sort of proto-Trumpist faction, despite being nominally only two or three dozen members of the House. Formally, John Boehner was the Speaker but only at the sufferance of the Freedom Caucus. That became clear with the collapse of what began as overwhelming bipartisan support for immigration reform in 2013. It ended with Boehner throwing in the towel in 2015 because of the impossibility of his job.

Trump’s genius was dispense with this two-step leadership model which had come to dominate the GOP, especially after the late Bush years and, in essence, take over the party from the Freedom Caucus. Embrace all the crazy – no winks and nods – and just take over the whole thing. Non-Trump Republicans were totally unable to stop his onslaught because they’d been feeding their supporters a diet of Trumpism for years. They were in no position to suddenly declare it all beyond the pale and Trump blew right through them like Godzilla blasting and knocking down rickety model buildings in one of those old movies. Trump saw the rot and blasted right through it.

Of course, after some desultory resistance they all fell into line. The one’s who ran even a bit against the grain were quickly run out of office.

Today we see the same pattern. We had lawyers for the President of the United States demanding that the votes of an entire city be thrown out because of claims of wholesale fraud and a conspiracy built on “communist money” and the machinations of the late Hugo Chavez to count Democratic votes at a higher percentage than Republican ones. It was a performance you couldn’t even really quite understand unless you’re fully versed in the racist conspiracy world of 8Chan, OANN and the rest of the rightwing nonsense-iverse. Mainstream Republicans, to the degree such a group still exists, are clearly trying to lie low and let the bureaucratic process work its way toward Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20th. But they don’t dare contradict this phantasmagoria of lies. They passively assent to it.

Of course, these aren’t the deepest roots of Trumpism which are tied to demographic changes, a political economy wrenching the cities away from the hinterlands and a rising authoritarian tide we don’t, living through it, fully understand. But politics isn’t all underlying causes. Politics in the traditional sense of the word, the actions or individuals and elites, matters quite a lot too. And those are the skids that were greased for Trumpism.

And thus the pattern. The GOP made its devil’s bargain with the racist conspiracy theory culture of the far right long ago. They profit from it and it sustains them. They couldn’t fight it if they wanted to (and seldom have any desire to). Because it’s the wind that sustains them. It’s the coursing ocean that drives them forward. That is why we have Trump and it’s why this pattern and rot will continue as far as the eye can see.

Even before the election, Democrats and the media claimed unsavory ties between Trump and the Russians, and the Russia collusion assertion led to several years of efforts to paralyze the Trump administration, with once reputable law professors and political pundits throwing around accusations of treason that earned them reliable bookings on MSNBC and CNN, book deals, and hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers.

I’m even so old that I remember how almost weekly major newspapers like the NY Times and Washington Post would roll out serial “bombshells” showing Trump illegal or unethical conduct in office based on anonymous supposed intelligence and “senior administration sources familiar the matter” — yet time and again the bombshell turned out to be a dud, to be followed by a new bombshell as the prior one faded. This created a continuous crisis news cycle. I don’t believe these sources existed, or if they did, they were not as described, like the supposedly “senior” administration official who wrote an anonymous op-ed in the NY Times, only to reveal himself recently as a not so senior DHS official who didn’t even serve in the White House or in a position to be close to Trump. The NY Times used his anonymity to create the false narrative of a senior official close to Trump ready to spill the beans — if the Times deceived the public about that, nothing it says about anonymous sources close to Trump should be believed.

Believe it or not, I’m also old enough to remember when Democrats and the media told us Trump was sending his unmarked stormtroopers to scoop “mostly peaceful” protesters off city streets, but none of that was true. Or when we had a multi-week Democrat and media frenzy about how Trump’s goons supposedly were eliminating postal boxes throughout the country to prevent people from mailing in ballots, when it turned out that the images were of routine rotation of mail drop boxes.

And how big tech giants and mainstream media openly silenced important information about Biden family influence peddling.

I could go on and on and on. Read through our Trump Derangement Syndrome Tag for hundreds of examples. And almost all of it was aided and abetted by Never Trump Republicans.

So don’t lecture me about how Trump and his supporters are violating all norms of behavior expected of presidential administrations.

So I’m going to sit back and watch the election contests that are going on right now. Stay the course. If the evidence is there, it’s there. If it’s not, it’s not. We’ll abide by court decisions, but until those legal efforts are exhausted, there is no reason to listen to the people who defiled and destroyed everything they touched in their scorched earth effort to get Trump.

I think he can by lowering taxes on US making less then $400,000 a year and Lower Capital Gains , both short and long term to Zero for the same income group.

BOSTON (AP) — Dolly Parton is being celebrated in song — a rewritten version of her own “Jolene” — for her contribution to an experimental coronavirus vaccine.

Northeastern University associate English professor Ryan Cordell posted a video on Twitter of himself performing a tweaked version of Parton’s signature song, renamed “Vaccine,” that has drawn tens of thousands of views.

The lyrics, were written by linguist and author Gretchen McCulloch, who posted them online and invited people to record them.

“I love that song. I love Dolly Parton. And I don’t know — I was inspired,” Cordell told The Boston Globe on Tuesday. “So I went and grabbed my guitar.”

Parton’s $1 million gift to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center helped researchers develop Moderna’s experimental coronavirus vaccine, announced this week.

Cordell grew up with Parton’s music, thanks to his parents and grandparents, and he called Parton’s appearance at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival as one of his “favorite musical memories.”

“So I was just thrilled to see this news that she had contributed to COVID vaccine research — I thought that was amazing,” he said.

The positive reaction to his video from doctors, nurses and other medical professionals is particularly gratifying, he said.

“And that’s really amazing because those folks are under so much pressure and stress, and especially right now as hospitals are getting overwhelmed,” Cordell said. “And so if they watched the video, and it made them happy for a minute, that’s all I need.”
