What if it was the other way around?

Did Democrats go too far in demanding election day voting would be unsafe?

Remember when everyone was arguing that Trump was possibly costing himself the election by demanding that there were going to be massive problems with mail in voting?  Conventional wisdom suggested that Trump was souring Republicans on mail-in/early voting and that it would lead to a massive early voting advantage for Biden that Trump would never be able to make up for on election day.

But what if this thinking was wrong.

Did anyone stop to think about how Democratic voters would react to all of their leaders arguing that election day voting is unsafe, and demanding everyone vote by mail or by requesting and dropping off their ballots early to avoid any possibility of catching Covid.

Think about all of the Governors demanding easy access to mail-in or early voting ballots as they argued that polling stations would be Covid traps.  Think about all of the advertising regarding voting early that was obviously aimed at those most afraid of Covid. Democrats have been told for weeks to stay safe and vote early. It would seem a little too late for these same Democratic leaders to now encourage their faithful to risk Covid and vote on election day, after making such a big fuss over how unsafe it would be.

Did anyone stop to think that all of this push for early voting in the name of Covid safety might actually sour Democrats on election day voting (if in fact they never did vote early)?

Here we are... election week. We have a record number of early voters, but no real indication that these early voters have banked any sort of insurmountable lead for Biden. In the states that are keeping track, the percentage of Republicans to Democrats who have already cast ballots are either very similar to 2016 or in some case actually more favorable to the Republicans.

The truth is that Joe Biden might actually need a better election day turnout than Hillary Clinton got.

Moreover... guess what? There have been problems with mail in voting.  Here in Minnesota there are approximately 300,000 requested mail in ballots that either never made it to the person, were mailed in and not yet received, or just sitting on the desk somewhere. The Governor (based on legal decisions that could go either way) is now telling people that it's too late to mail them in and have them counted. There are similar tales across the country of problems with lost ballots and questions about what will and will not be counted.

So perhaps Trump didn't screw himself by telling people to vote in person (either early or on election day). Perhaps his followers will take his lead and take the risk of going out on election day and voting when others won't. Certainly Biden followers seem to be mirroring their candidate. Hiding in their basements rather than attending any of this rallies.

When you are talking elections... it only takes a couple of percentages to make a difference. All it would take is a small percent of Democrats  who refuses to vote on election day because of Covid and that just might be the difference between Biden winning or losing an important battleground state or two... or three... or four... or even... well you get the point.

NEW!
You’re probably tense. I am too. We’ve noted in our reporting the cloud of tension that appears to be resting over the whole country as we move to within 48 hours of election day. Some of this is natural. A national election is high stakes. In 2020 the stakes feel and are uncommonly high. That puts everyone on edge.

But these sources of anxiety and tension don’t really make for more than a small portion of what people are feeling. The cloud of tension and menace hanging over the country stems from the specific fact that the President and his party are making an all out press to limit voting, slow vote counting and now toss out literally hundreds of thousands of bonafide, legally cast votes. On top of this, related to this, the President has quite intentionally left open the possibility that he won’t accept defeat but will try to stay in office – likely with the connivance of the corrupt Supreme Court, but perhaps in some unknown way only he knows.

We could end up with any number of nightmare scenarios. But what it is critical to understand is that even if few votes are thrown out and even if the President doesn’t act on any of his coup threats that the entire exercise has amounted to a vast campaign of psychological warfare against the American people – one that has already deprived us of a free and fair election.

So again, elections are tense. There’s a lot on the line. That’s normal. That’s the pageant of democracy. This is different. The President has used the powers given to him to act on behalf of the American people to plot against them, to load onto the normal structure of an election a campaign of psychological warfare meant to put his opposition off-balance and at a disadvantage because we don’t know if the votes will be counted and results respected.

Do a thought experiment.

Imagine your experience of this election cycle if there weren’t a full court Republican press around the country to throw out lawful ballots and if the President made clear – as all 44 presidents before him always repeatedly did – that of course he would respect the result of the election.

You’d still probably feel on edge, yes, because the stakes are high. But I’d imagine your experience of the whole process would be dramatically different. Knowing that the votes would be counted – in the admittedly imperfect way they always have been – and knowing the result of the election – whatever it is – would count and be final you’d likely be focusing on giving money, knocking on doors, voting. You’d be doing all the stuff politically committed citizens do in an election.

But the President has layered a whole additional layer of work and tension on top of that with this campaign of psychological warfare. Will the votes be tossed out? Will the postal service be allowed to deliver them? Will the result be respected? Will Trump have to leave if he loses? How much activism and mental energy have you expended over the last six months on contesting an election and how much have you expanded on grappling with the President’s war on the election? The stress and cognitive load between the current situation and the alternative reality I sketched out is the price imposed by Trump’s campaign of psychological warfare against the American people, the republic and the state.

It is a grievous crime against the people even if he follows through with none of his threats. It’s mind-games, psychological warfare, a crime against every last one of us.

He's panicking

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he's sending in his lawyers as soon as the election ends Tuesday, his latest attack on the legitimacy of this week's unprecedented vote count.

After landing in North Carolina on Sunday evening, Trump was asked about a report published Sunday in Axios that said he could try to prematurely declare victory on Election Day. Trump denied that he would do so, but he lamented Supreme Court rulings that allowed for Pennsylvania and North Carolina to count absentee ballots that are postmarked before Election Day but arrive shortly after Tuesday.

"I think it was a terrible decision for our country. And I think it was a very dangerous decision for our country," Trump said. "Because you're going to have one or two or three states, depending on how it ends up, where they're tabulating ballots and the rest of the world is waiting to find out. And I think there's great danger to it, and I think a lot of fraud and misuse can take place. I think it's a terrible decision by the Supreme Court. A terrible decision."

Trump's claims of widespread fraud connected to mail-in voting have been repeatedly debunked.

"Now, I don't know if that's going to be changed, because we're going to go in night of, as soon as that election is over, we're going in with our lawyers," Trump continued, adding: "I don't think it's fair that we have to wait a long period of time after the election. Should've gotten their ballots in a long time before that. Could've gotten their ballots in a month ago. I think it's a ridiculous decision."

Pennsylvania and North Carolina are two of the most hotly contested swing states. In Pennsylvania specifically, election officials aren't allowed to ready the ballots for tabulation ahead of polls' closing — a process known as "pre-canvassing" — that would help speed up the counting process.

Earlier Sunday, at a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump sought to discredit absentee ballots as election officials in some states have cautioned that it may take days to complete the count.

"We should know the result of the election by the evening of November 3rd," Trump said.

Trump Has No Effective, Short and Pithy Closing Argument
10:10 pm
George Condon:
"Four years ago, candidate Donald J. Trump closed out his long-shot challenge with a steady and surprisingly disciplined reliance on nine words he repeated over and over again: ‘Build the wall,’ ‘Drain the swamp,’ and ‘Lock her up.’ Stemming from his remarkably effective campaign slogan, ‘Make America Great Again,’ it was the most readily digestible message since Franklin D. Roosevelt urged voters not to ‘change horses midstream.'

“Now, President Trump is concluding his run for a second term with a broad, shotgun-style message that is diffuse, disjointed, and undisciplined. In place of the tight message of 2016, Trump has uttered in just the last seven days of his 2020 campaign almost 200,000 words and what often seemed to be just as many messages. A challenger’s stretch-run clarity and simplicity have been replaced by an incumbent’s disdain for anything that appears scripted, edited, or—most of all—short.”

Biden and Trump Set Up Showdown in Pennsylvania
10:46 pm
“As the national early vote climbs past a staggering 93 million and challenges to the electoral process intensify across states, President Trump and Joe Biden are barreling into Pennsylvania and turning it into the top battleground in Tuesday’s election, with Democrats flooding in with door-knockers and Republicans trying to parlay Mr. Trump’s rallies into big turnout once again,” the New York Times reports.

“Both campaigns see Pennsylvania as increasingly crucial to victory: Mr. Trump now appears more competitive here than in Michigan and Wisconsin, two other key northern states he hopes to win, and Mr. Biden’s clearest electoral path to the White House runs through the state. Pennsylvania has more Electoral College votes, 20, than any other traditional battleground except Florida, and Mr. Trump won the state by less than one percentage point in 2016.”

No Matter the Polling Method, Biden Is Ahead

Nate Cohn:
“This morning, a big wave of polls showed Joe Biden with a clear lead. Nearly all of these were sponsored by major media organizations and conducted via live phone interviews. As for what we had to say about them,
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: Biden’s still ahead by a lot.

“This afternoon, we got a big wave of polls showing a very similar result, but by very different means. Nearly all were conducted online or by automated phone calls. Emerson, Ipsos, YouGov (here as part of the Cooperative Election Study) and SurveyMonkey are all fairly familiar pollsters with this approach…

“I don’t want to get into the ins and outs of which methods might be best. What’s important: Mr. Biden seems to hold a significant lead, no matter the methodology.”

The Texas Supreme Court on Sunday denied an effort by Republicans to throw out more than 120,000 votes that had already been cast at drive-through locations in Harris County, leaving Republicans’ only remaining option at the federal level.

The ruling from the court came without comment.

The effort to get rid of the votes from largely Democratic Harris County now hinges on a nearly identical effort at the federal level, where a judge has called an election-eve hearing for Monday.

The lawsuit contends that the 10 drive-through voting sites in Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city, are operating illegally and are arranged in locations that favor Democrats.

The system was put in place for the first time this year by Chris Hollins, the Harris County clerk, with unanimous approval by county commissioners, after being tested in a pilot program over the summer.

More than 127,000 voters have cast ballots at the sites and the number could grow to more than 135,000 through Election Day on Tuesday, said Susan Hays, a lawyer for Harris County. She said county officials planned to vigorously challenge the suit, which she described as an act of “voter suppression.”

“It’s nuts,” she said. “Votes should count.”

Democrats were hopeful on Sunday that the decision from the Texas Supreme Court, which leans conservative, would bode well for their battle at the federal level.

The case will be heard Monday morning by Judge Andrew S. Hanen of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, who was appointed by President George W. Bush.

In a motion on Friday asking to intervene in the case, Democrats said it threatened to “throw Texas’ election into chaos by invalidating the votes of more than 100,000 eligible Texas voters who cast their ballots” at the drive-through sites. The motion was filed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the campaign of M.J. Hegar, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

The plaintiffs, who include State Representative Steve Toth and the conservative activist Steve Hotze, argue that drive-through voting “is a violation of state and federal law and must be stopped.”

In a telephone interview on Saturday, Mr. Toth said that only the legislature had the authority to implement a drive-though voting system. He also said the arrangement of the sites was tilted toward Democratic voters, noting that Mr. Hollins is vice chairman of finance for the Texas Democratic Party.

“If Hollins is really concerned that everybody is accurately represented, why is it that nine of the 10 are set up in predominantly Democratic areas?” said Mr. Toth, who represents part of neighboring Montgomery County.

He denied that the lawsuit was aimed at blunting Democratic momentum amid record rates of early voting in Houston and other strongly Democratic areas in the last days before the election.

“We’re not the ones who are disenfranchising anybody,” he said. “This is Hollins who did this.”

In a statement on Twitter on Saturday, Mr. Hollins said drive-through voting “is a safe, secure and convenient way to vote. Texas Election Code allows it, the Secretary of State approved it, and 127,000 voters from all walks of life have used it.”

He said his office was “committed to counting every vote cast by registered voters in this election,” and that voters would be notified if court proceedings required them to take any additional steps.

Voter suppression should be a felony.

CARLSON: Jason, why just the kind of mania about trying to force certain people to stay in their prescribed lane? Why not just kind of ignore it. Let it go. Like, you know, some rapper wants to vote for Trump. Okay, who cares? But they do care. Why?

JASON WHITLOCK, OUTKICK.COM: Oh, because white liberals just being very honest, like Chelsea Handler, think it’s their job to control, maintain, and limit the amount of freedom that black people enjoy here in America. We are supposed to be beholden and dependent upon them and it threatens them when people like Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, 50 Cent and any of these guys stray from their prescription or course of action that they want us to take. It threatens them.

And it is her job as basically a modern-day overseer to whip us back in line, and it really is that simple.

CARLSON: So she is disempowered by this because Lil Wayne, who she imagined she has some kind of authority over, him disobeying her means that she is less powerful?

WHITLOCK: It means that he is more powerful. And I honestly believe that not all, but there are a lot of white liberals who are threatened by the independence and the self-determination of black people. They want us dependent upon them.

There is a superiority complex. There is a “You guys can’t do it without us” complex. And there is a “We want your vote and we want you in line with our feminist agenda. We want to meld the two off of the back of oppression that black people have faced. We want to advance all these other things that have nothing to do with black people.”

CARLSON: The feminist agenda. I’m not exactly sure what you’re saying, but I have the feeling it is very close to the heart of this. Can you explain that a little bit?

WHITLOCK: Well, look, the greatest beneficiaries of the Civil Rights movement and a lot of people’s view and certainly in mine has been white women. And I’ll go a step further, women have advanced off of oppression of black people, white women in particular.

And Tucker, I’m just going to go all the way there. I think we are now seeing the LGBTQ community latch on to black oppression and try to use it to advance their call, and anybody that strays from those agendas and that support any person, black person that puts their advancement and their priorities ahead of the feminist movement and the LGBT movement is going to face stiff repercussion over social media in particular.

And there’s going to be celebrities, white and black, that are used like attack dogs to make sure that certain black men and others stay in line with the movement that the elite liberals want us to stick to and that’s the matriarchy, the empowerment of women, and the empowerment of the LGBT community.

rrb would thrilled.

All of the fears and preparation could well be for naught. We could have a clear winner, the country could peacefully accept it and Donald Trump could submit to a peaceful transfer of power.

But no signs point in that direction.

Trump has openly resisted saying that he will guarantee a peaceful transfer of power and he has repeatedly told his supporters that the only way he can lose is if the election is stolen from him.

He has signaled in every way possible that he plans to stay in power at all costs. On Saturday, he said the Supreme Court will help secure a victory for him if he’s not declared the winner on election night: “If we win, if we win on Tuesday or, thank you very much Supreme Court, shortly thereafter.” He may have been speaking sarcastically here, but the statement fits a pattern: Trump doesn’t care if he “wins” ugly or unfairly, a win is a win. He doesn’t care if it could rip this country apart because he has never cared about the health and stability of the nation.

Everyone in Trump World is a tool to be used by him, to further his ambitions, to fill his coffers, to stroke his ego, to protect his power.

RealClearPolitics:
Biden Will Win. Republicans Should Understand Why.

By Bill Scher November 02, 2020

Joe Biden is going to win.

I have been wrong before. I will be wrong again. And maybe I’m wrong today. But we do not have any significant data to suggest Donald Trump was ever in a position to win reelection, or that he is closing the campaign with any sort of momentum needed for a come-from-behind victory.

Four years ago, we did have such data. In the RealClearPolitics national polling average, Hillary Clinton’s lead shrunk nearly six percentage points between Oct. 18 and Nov. 3, before ticking up a bit at the end. Her share of support throughout the duration of the general election campaign never reached 50%, an indication of soft support.

Moreover, the Trump train was clearly accelerating in those final two weeks, if you looked at RCP’s state poll averages. Clinton’s Michigan lead plummeted from 10 to 3.6 points and her Pennsylvania lead narrowed from 5.6 to 2.1 points. In Florida and North Carolina, Trump erased Clinton’s small leads completely to become, however barely, the front-runner. Trump also took the lead in Ohio in mid-October and never looked back.

(Wisconsin was the one state he flipped where the polls did not show a late surge. But as RCP President Tom Bevan noted to me on Twitter, there were no Wisconsin polls taken after Nov. 2, which was six days before the election. In turn, there was no ability to detect any late surge.)

Today, Trump is enjoying no such acceleration. Biden’s RCP national lead, as of early Monday morning, is at a healthy 7.2 points, roughly the same as it was 10 days prior. Since the end of the party conventions, Biden’s lead has remained between 5.9 and 10.3 points. Going back nearly 14 months, his lead has never been smaller than four points. And his average share of support as of Monday morning is at 51.1% and was above 50% throughout October. Biden’s lead has been, and is, strong, sturdy and stable.

His battleground state advantages are smaller than his national margin, but they are still leads in most states and Trump is not aggressively closing the gaps. Look at the trajectories, starting from two Mondays ago through Monday morning. In Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida and North Carolina, Biden’s lead has not changed in either direction by more than half of a percentage point. The only battleground states where Trump has gained more than one point on Biden are Arizona (2.1), Iowa (2.7) and Minnesota (1.9).

The RCP averages now give Trump a paper-thin lead in Iowa and a miniscule 1-point deficit in Arizona. Still, the modest gains in those states don’t track with the national trajectory, so they may indicate nothing more than statistical noise. And even if we presume that Trump wins both, he’s still not ahead in enough other states to win 270 electoral votes. Without forward movement, he can’t get there.

Now, what is the point of making so certain a prediction? Why not allow for the possibility that the polling industry has collectively missed the mark? Why not just wait and see what happens?

Because we all should understand that Trump’s defeat has been long in the making, and was starkly visible to the naked eye for months.

Do not embrace any spin that he could have won if only the pandemic didn’t spike in the last week, if only he stayed on message in the last week, if only his campaign spent its war chest more wisely, if only there was more coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop story, or if only there was more coverage of the third quarter GDP number.

I fully expect these excuses and then some, though I expect the claim that Trump would have won if not for the pandemic to be repeated most of all. In his own telling, to a recent Erie, Pa., crowd, “We had this thing won. We were so far up. We had the greatest economy ever, we had the greatest jobs, the greatest everything. And then we got hit with the plague and I had to go back to work.”

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Nope. Trump was never ahead of Biden in the RCP national average, which has been tracked since September 2019. And according to RCP’s presidential job approval average, Trump has the unique distinction of never holding an approval number higher than 47.3% (forget about 50%) and almost never earning an approval number higher than his disapproval rating. (Trump was above water by just 0.1 points for one day, the very first day RCP began tracking his job approval: Jan. 27, 2017.)

Trump has been weighed down by these numbers despite a growing economy for much of his presidency. The discrepancy between his poll numbers and economic numbers strongly suggests that most Americans have been so repulsed by his divisive, self-serving and just plain mean behavior that they didn’t care how fat their wallets were getting. They just want him gone.

Trump loyalists may blame the coronavirus for his political misfortune. But the truth is the pandemic presented the president with a rare golden opportunity to reverse his fortunes. If anything, his deft handling of a major crisis could have turned his terrible numbers around. Trump could have wiped the slate clean, shelved the insults, worked cooperatively with all governors, elevated experts and consistently encouraged mask-wearing so the nation could safely open up as soon as possible. The only things that prevented him from such responsible crisis management are his own character and his own abilities.

He also could have used the tragic killing of George Floyd to change public perception of his handling of race issues. After all, Trump did enact criminal justice reform, and was eager at his convention to show off the people of color he pardoned. Instead, he continued to fan the flames of racial division. Even though he has desperately tried to pin all subsequent social unrest on Biden and the Democrats, the incumbent has clearly taken the blame for presiding over chaos. One of the few times Biden’s RCP national lead reached double digits was in the weeks following Floyd’s death.

Consider that in the first debate, Biden bluntly called Trump a “racist” — one of the harshest words ever used by one presidential candidate to describe another — and no one batted an eye.

Of course, regardless of my confidence in the final outcome, Biden supporters should still campaign their hearts out on this final day, and try to generate as big a “blue wave” as possible, to win control of the Senate and strengthen the new president’s mandate. Trump supporters should also not take my word, and do everything they can to prove the pollsters wrong.

But if I am proven right, Republicans should not spin themselves and make excuses. They should accept that Trump lost this race a long time ago because he did not take governing seriously, and because he tried to divide a nation that, in its heart, does not want to be divided.

In turn, for the GOP to remove the stain of Trump from its reputation, Republicans will have to show their seriousness of purpose by working with President Biden on good faith compromises, and by rejecting the corrosive politics of polarization.

How Stacey Abrams Got Biden to Take Georgia Seriously

Ryan Lizza:
“If there is one person who is both most responsible for Georgia’s emergence as a competitive state, and most likely to benefit from a Democratic victory here, it is Stacey Abrams. The 2018 Democratic gubernatorial candidate’s near miss — she lost by 1.4 points — made Georgia the new North Carolina: a recently red Southern state undergoing dramatic demographic change that has made it competitive for the foreseeable future.

“The restrictions that took effect Monday are milder than the ones Germany imposed in the first phase of the pandemic in March and April. This time around, schools, kindergartens, non-essential shops and hairdressers are to remain open.”
