Covid update - state vs state

Over the past couple of weeks the Covid numbers have been on the rise in spite of added regulations, mandates, and the fact that people are less mobile while spending more time in their own homes. There still seems to be an ongoing argument as to the cause, with many suggesting that the rise is due to a normal cold and flu season, while others are still insisting it is about lax mask wearing or other human controlled activity (in spite of evidence suggesting otherwise). Rises in cases were already being blamed on Thanksgiving day gettogethers even before Thanksgiving even came.

There has been an especially dramatic rise in cases in the upper midwest / great lakes states that seems to be moving towards the East Coast. New York has moved back into the top three in cases per day and are moving up the ladder in deaths per day as well. All that being said, California and Texas (neither known for cold and flu) have been at the top of the proverbial pack in both cases and deaths. California has seen 30,000 cases or more in six of the last eight days.

For those of you interested in the blue vs red state breakdown we are now looking at:

  • Blue states - 961 deaths per million
  • Red states - 896 deaths per million
This was an increase of 53.3 deaths per million for blue states and 47.6 deaths per million for red states since the last time I updated my spreadsheet. While these numbers are close, they represent a flip back to blue states showing more daily deaths per million than red states, and we are now seeing that gap widening again (after closing for the past few month).

Either way, the vaccine is probably the biggest game changer we will see. Masks, social distancing, handwashing has shown marginal (if any) scientific value and appears to be more about virtue signaling as anything else. But a vaccine (if it works as advertised) should be the very first scientifically proven and broadly socially accepted manner to control the virus. It will take a few weeks, if not months, to get a majority of the country vaccinated. But we should start seeing effects fairly soon after it starts being distributed.

CONFESSIONS OF A LIMP NOODLE

We have received a small stream of emails from readers and noted a few comments calling us out for not “standing with” President Trump and disparaging our manhood as well — this because we have not decried the “rigged” election that robbed President Trump of reelection. One professed long-time reader sent us a message announcing that he has “resigned” from the site.

I particularly appreciate the imputation of cowardice to us by commenters writing from behind brave pseudonyms. It mitigates the sting. It’s almost funny.

The criticism is directed at all four of us, so I don’t take it personally. My favorite so far is the one that decried us as a limp noodle, although that one may in fact have been addressed to me. In any case, I want to adopt it as my own and turn it to my own use. It doesn’t quite have the crackle of “Cocaine Mitch,” but it’s got the vulgar intimation going for it.

I’m not clear on what it means to “stand with” President Trump. I want to “stand with” President Trump. It certainly wouldn’t cost me anything personally to “stand with” him. Writing for Power Line, I would find it easier to fall into line with President Trump than to stand my ground with my fellow limp noodles.

Indeed, I am still going through the stages of grief over President Trump’s failure to prevail in the election. I have moved beyond denial to anger. If you want restatement and elaboration of the claims of “rigging” and “fraud” made by President Trump, you have had to go elsewhere, perhaps to sites that announce the latest revelations in caps and use exclamation points to emphasize them. We have fallen short.

I have expressed my own sympathy with the claim of fraud in general and my skepticism of the specifics of the fraud claims in posts including “A conspiracy so immense” and “What is to be done?”

The Trump litigation has proven a bust. Indeed, most recently, in the Wisconsin federal district decision held over the weekend, the Trump legal team entered into an agreed statement of facts and declined to call a single witness. Called to put their cards on the table, the Trump team all but folded.

U.S. Poverty Rate Soars
2:00 pm
“The U.S. poverty rate has surged over the past five months, with 7.8 million Americans falling into poverty, the latest indication of how deeply many are struggling after government aid dwindled,” the Washington Post reports.

“The poverty rate jumped to 11.7 percent in November, up 2.4 percentage points since June, according to new data released Wednesday by researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame.”

Trump is President.

Quote of the Day
1:45 pm
“I think there’s a long-term structural issue. And by the way, I’ve had this conversation with Chuck Schumer several times — that we have to do a better job developing a message so that rural Americans can say, ‘Yeah, those guys, they think like I do.’ Because that’s what Trump has right now.”
— Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), quoted by the New York Times, on Democrats and rural voters.

YEP, GOT TO STOP LETTING THE REPUGS PULL THE WOOL OVER THE EYES OF WORKERS AND RURAL FAMERS AND MUCH OF THE MIDDLE CLASS.

Trump’s Virus Briefings Were ‘Political Suicide’
1:30 pm
Former Australian prime minister John Howard said that Donald Trump penned a lengthy “political suicide note” with his “terrible” handling of the coronavirus pandemic, The Guardian reports.

Said Howard: “If Donald Trump had handled the pandemic half-decently he would have won the election. He was headed towards a victory until the pandemic hit. It was his mishandling of that because, in the end, the public, when threatened, want their leaders to defend them against the threat.”

Trump Appointee Demanded ‘Herd Immunity’ Strategy
12:22 pm
A top Trump appointee repeatedly urged top health officials to adopt a “herd immunity” approach to Covid-19 and allow millions of Americans to be infected by the virus,
according to internal emails obtained by Politico.

Said then-science adviser Paul Alexander: “There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus. PERIOD.”

He added: “Infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk…. so we use them to develop herd…we want them infected…”

Scott reports:
Blue states - 961 deaths per million
Red states - 896 deaths per million

Not long ago, it was four times more deaths in blue states, then twice more, then only one fourth more.

Now red states, though they have much lower and less crowded populations, trail blue by only 65 deaths per million.

Inescapable conclusion:
Shoulda shut down, distanced, and worn masks more when Fauci was warning about what would happen.

Rand Paul Says Election Was ‘In Many Ways Stolen”
2:32 pm
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said at a Senate hearing that the presidential election was “in many ways stolen.”

Said Paul: “The fraud happened. The election in many ways was stolen and the only way it will be fixed is by in the future reinforcing the laws.”

The Hill:
“The remarks were notable because Paul is seen as one of the senators who might join a bid by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) to challenge the election’s outcome and overturn the results in several states.”

Biden Predicts 250,000 More Coronavirus Deaths, Urges Americans To Stay Home Over Holidays

President-elect Joe Biden said another 250,000 Americans could die of coronavirus between now and January, a higher forecast than previously given by health officials as the country faces rises in new infections and hospitalizations.

During a virtual roundtable Wednesday with small business owners, Biden warned December could be the hardest time of the pandemic yet.

“We’re likely to lose another 250,000 people dead between now and January,” Biden said.

He urged Americans to refrain from traveling for Christmas, saying even “with all the trouble you’re going through, you cannot be traveling during these holidays, as much as you want to.”

He also revealed that this year for Thanksgiving, the Biden family held a toned-down celebration: Biden only met with his wife, daughter and son-in-law who live near him in-person, while the rest of the family was connected through Zoom.

“Christmas is going to be a lot harder,” the president-elect said. “I don’t want to scare anybody here, but understand the facts.”

On Wednesday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield projected 200,000 more coronavirus deaths in December.
