Hunter Biden story - before and after election!

I mean seriously... Politico, WaPo, NYT just "mention" Russia and their faithful followers fall into lockstep. I actually recall one of our liberals here "linking" to this story as a means to "fact check" the idea that Hunter Biden was under investigation.

Even with this latest headline, Politico fails to report that the Justice Department's real interest is possible international money laundering and other names involved include both the President-elect (Hunter's dad) and Kamala Harris.

n October, 7 officials in the Texas Attorney Generals office called for Paxton to be investigated. They wrote in a statement, “We have a good faith belief that the attorney general is violating federal and/or state law including prohibitions related to improper influence, abuse of office, bribery and other potential criminal offense.”

The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether they will look at the case or not.

"I've been a critic of the president. I've spoken out against him. I was on both committees that worked to impeach him," Swalwell said in an interview on Tuesday. "The timing feels like that should be looked at."

Swalwell added: "What it appears though that this person — as the story reports — was unsuccessful in whatever they were trying to do. But if intelligence officials are trying to weaponize someone's cooperation, they are essentially seeking to do what this person was not able to do, which is to try and discredit someone."

It’s bad orange man’s fault he was banging a Chinese spy. Is there anything Trump can’t do?

Several hours later, Politico reported that the investigation "has been more extensive than a statement from Hunter Biden indicates," to include "potential money laundering and Hunter Biden's foreign ties." The New York Times reported that the money laundering part "failed to gain traction after FBI agents were unable to gather enough evidence for a prosecution."

The investigation apparently began in 2018 and remained a secret until this week. Besides raising questions about Hunter Biden's conduct -- it's not surprising that taxes are an issue for a person who has gotten large sums of foreign money under suspicious circumstances -- it also raises questions about the politics and media coverage of the president-elect's son.

Traitors according to rrb

Next Monday, 538 Americans will convene in state capitols across the country, swear an oath to uphold the Constitution, and cast the most consequential yet utterly anticlimactic votes of the 2020 election.

These are the electors, the members of the Electoral College, who will take one of the final, formal steps in making Joe Biden the 46th president of the United States and ending President Donald Trump’s desperate bid to overturn the results of the November election. These 538 people will mark small pieces of paper and drop them in ballot boxes; once counted, the votes in each state—preordained by the election—will be transmitted to the Senate, and on January 6, Congress will meet to tally the results and declare a winner to be inaugurated two weeks later. Despite Trump’s fervent wishes, the system will work just as it has in the past.

The “Intellectual” Right’s Assault on Democracy. Thecoldheartedtruth is a prime example!

Politicians have constituents to please, but what about the “thinkers” of the Trumpist right?

by LINDA CHAVEZ

DECEMBER 10, 2020

The politics of intimidation has worked well for Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy for president in 2015. Every critic of any note within the party eventually succumbed to his prolific attacks, amplified by those of his most ardent followers. The few who stood up—Jeff Flake, Francis Rooney, Denver Riggleman, and others—retired, grew silent, changed party, or were drummed out of office. So it’s no mystery why the bully-in-chief thinks he can pull off a coup to stay in office past noon on January 20 by alternately cajoling and threatening state and federal legislators to overturn the election, ignore the 81 million voters who chose Joe Biden as president, and appoint electors in key states who will acquiesce to his plot.

What is surprising, however, is how few conservatives are willing to stand up to the most direct threat against electoral democracy in living memory. Sure, there are the brave few in Georgia and Arizona, but their courage has been met with threats against them and their families amid utter silence from most Republicans in Congress. We might expect this from the likes of Sen. Ted Cruz, who embraced Trump even after he implied Cruz’s wife is ugly and suggested his father was an assassin. But what about those on the “intellectual” right?

PODCAST

Former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett, whose best-selling Book of Virtues made him rich, regularly appears on Fox News giving credence to some of Trump’s wild claims of a stolen election. “I believe this election was fixed,” he said this week, noting “systematic corruption” and “statistical anomalies” that made it improbable that Biden won.

Roger Kimball, who is publisher of Encounter Books and won the prestigious 2019 Bradley Prize “for advancing liberty and preserving democratic culture,” has amplified claims of suspicious vote tallies in multiple jurisdictions, mostly cities with large black populations.

Leading the pack of Trump apologists, the Claremont Institute’s scholars and publications have not only echoed Trump’s claims of a fraudulent election, but even “testified” that the 2020 elections violated state laws and the Constitution before “hearings,” which were in reality nothing more than get-togethers that Rudy Giuliani organized with a handful of state legislators.

John Eastman, a law professor who leads Claremont’s Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, issued a blanket claim that Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin violated Article II of the U.S. Constitution by allowing some absentee ballots to be counted in the 2020 presidential election, and that their state legislatures should, therefore, nullify the election and appoint their own slates of electors to choose the next president. Eastman praised the dubious lawsuit filed by the Texas attorney general (who is currently under indictment for fraud and is accused of bribery by his top deputies), which would disenfranchise voters in those states as well—and the professor has now even filed a motion to intervene in the case for Donald Trump. The Supreme Court will decide by Thursday whether to hear the case, but the Court has already shut the door on the other conspiracy case to reach it this week, brought by Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Kelly and a handful of other Republicans in the state.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The intellectual dishonesty here is breathtaking. For individuals and organizations that champion the rule of law and claim the mantle of the founding principles of our nation to call for overturning an election reeks of hypocrisy. It was one thing for them to advocate for so flawed a man as Trump to lead our nation. But the American people have spoken and to continue to claim that the election was stolen, that votes were fraudulently counted, is to attack the very foundations of our democratic institutions. They sow distrust in democracy itself—formerly the provenance of the far left. Politicians may fear the wrath of Trump’s legion of followers if they speak out, but what is it that drives the “thinkers” like Bennett and Eastman? They should know better than to parrot insane conspiracy theories and promote specious legal arguments.

On January 20, Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. But we should never forget the role of those who tried to subvert the peaceful transfer of power. They deserve ignominy, not because they opposed Biden’s election, but because they tried to undermine democracy.

Although Ohio does not endorse Texas’s proposed relief, it does endorse its call for a ruling on the meaning of the Electors Clause. More precisely, Ohio urges the Court to decide, at the earliest available opportunity, whether state courts and state executive actors violate the Electors Clause when they change the rules by which presidential elections are run. In late October, Justice Alito predicted that the Court’s failure to decide that question in another case had “needlessly created conditions that could lead to serious post-election problems.” Boockvar, 592 U.S. __, slip op. at 1 (Statement of Alito, J.). Unfortunately, he was right. In many States, citizens voted for President under rules created by state judiciaries and state executive actors rather than state legislatures. See, e.g., id., slip op. at 1–2; Moore v. Circosta, 592 U.S. __, slip op. 1–2 (2020) (Gorsuch, J., dissenting from denial of application for injunctive relief); Tex. League of United Latin Am. Citizens v. Hughs, 978 F.3d 136, 151–52 (5th Cir. 2020) (Ho, J., concurring). Because this Court has never decided whether the Electors Clause permits such alterations to the method for choosing presidential electors, Americans are left to wonder whether the process by which they voted for President was consistent with our country’s founding charter. Those doubts will linger, “robbing the winners of” a victory that all Americans will deem legitimate, and “the losers of the peace that comes from a fair defeat.” United States v. Windsor, 570 U.S. 744, 802 (2013) (Scalia, J., dissenting).

Yet all seem to have gotten through COVID-19, and all have gotten an antibody treatment in such short supply that some hospitals and states are doling it out by lottery.

Now Rudy Giuliani, the latest member of Trump’s inner circle to contract COVID-19, has acknowledged that he received at least two of the same drugs the president received. He even conceded that his “celebrity” status had given him access to care that others did not have.

“If it wasn’t me, I wouldn’t have been put in a hospital frankly,” Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, told WABC radio in New York. “Sometimes when you’re a celebrity, they’re worried if something happens to you they’re going to examine it more carefully, and do everything right.”

Texas Lawsuit Becomes New Conservative Litmus Test
7:04 pm
“The Texas lawsuit asking the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate President-elect Joe Biden’s victory has quickly become a conservative litmus test, as 106 members of Congress and multiple state attorneys general signed onto the case even as some have predicted it will fail,” the AP reports.

“The last-gasp bid to subvert the results of the Nov. 3 election is demonstrating President Donald Trump’s enduring political power even as his term is set to end. And even though most of the signatories are far-right conservatives who come from deep red districts, the filing meant that roughly one-quarter of the U.S. House believes the Supreme Court should set aside election results.”

The Godfather Presidency lollipop

Once the president arrived in Washington, however, he upended tradition. On the day of his inauguration, Trump filed paperwork for his reelection, allowing himself to continue raising money from supporters while he served. As other people filled his campaign coffers, Trump sat back and watched, never donating to the reelection effort. Instead, he did the opposite, taking money out of his campaign by charging for things like rent, food, lodging and legal expenses. In doing so, the president managed to shift $2.7 million from his supporters to his businesses between his first day in office in 2017 and Election Day in 2020, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings.

The $2.7 million represents a tiny sliver of the $785 million that the Trump campaign took in from January 2017 to November 2020. It remains a mystery why Trump, who is worth an estimated $2.5 billion, didn’t just cover the costs by making a donation.

The bulk of the money flowed through Trump Tower. About a month after Trump became president, his campaign paid $159,000 to Trump Tower Commercial LLC, the entity through which he retained his 100% stake in Trump Tower. The building had served as headquarters during the 2016 campaign, and even though the Trump team opened another headquarters in the D.C. area, the campaign continued to spend about $40,000 a month on Trump Tower space through the 2020 election. The rent payments ultimately added up to $1.6 million.

Other entities also collected large sums. In May 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel, authorizing him to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. The timing could be a coincidence, but the next month, the Trump campaign paid $90,000 for “legal consulting” to a company called the Trump Corporation, also owned by the president. Trump’s financial disclosure reports describe that entity as a “management company.” It is unclear why a management company would be providing legal advice. Regardless, the Trump Corporation continued charging for legal work throughout the campaign and eventually expanded its offerings to include I.T. services. By Election Day, it had taken in $293,000 from the Trump campaign, according to the analysis of filings.

In November 2017, the reelection campaign began making mysterious payments to another one of the president’s companies, named Trump Plaza LLC. That entity controls property in New York City that includes a garage, retail space and two brownstone apartment buildings. Federal filings categorized the payments as “rent,” but it’s not clear what exactly the Trump campaign was renting. None of the storefronts served as campaign shops. A parking operator seemed to be leasing the garage. And residents of the brownstones said they had not seen any sign of the campaign. In August 2019, the reelection effort abruptly stopped paying rent to Trump Plaza LLC, after having already handed over $84,000.

An additional entity named Trump Restaurants LLC—also owned entirely by the president—charged rent to the campaign. That company appears to be connected to basement of Trump Tower, which includes several eateries. It seems likely that the payments to Trump Restaurants LLC covered the rent for a small souvenir stand, near Trump Grill and Trump’s Ice Cream Parlor. The money arrived month after month, usually $3,000, even after COVID slowed down foot traffic at brick-and-mortar shopping venues. By Election Day, Trump Restaurants LLC had collected $129,000 from the campaign.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Democratic areas have experienced more COVID-19 deaths; in recent months, GOP areas have been hit harder

A similar pattern to those seen with the urban-rural and racial composition of each district emerges in the relationship between the partisan leanings of a district and deaths attributable to the coronavirus. In the early stages of the pandemic, the hardest hit districts were overwhelmingly “blue” parts of the country. COVID-19 deaths in the March through May period were more than four times as high in strongly Democratic districts (where Republican congressional candidates received less than 25% of the vote in the 2018 midterm elections) as in districts where Republican candidates won more than 60% of the 2018 vote.

The Trump campaign’s and Thecoldheartedtruth's arguments have relied on unverified accounts by poll watchers, Republican observers and ordinary voters who claimed to have witnessed malfeasance at the polls or in the ballot-counting process, and on complicated mathematical calculations meant to prove that a Biden win was statistically improbable. While there is no actual data, collected either before or after the election, that shows it was impossible for Trump to lose, or that Trump received more legal votes than Biden in swing states like Michigan, in an alternate universe where one person reserves the right to be the sole arbiter of what constitutes “fake news,” evidence itself seems beside the point.

Hunter Biden Probe Broader Than Indicated
December 10, 2020 at 6:26 am EST omments

The federal investigation into President-elect Joe Biden’s son Hunter has been more extensive than a statement from Hunter Biden indicates, Politico reports.

“In addition to Delaware, the securities fraud unit in the Southern District of New York also scrutinized Hunter Biden’s finances, according to the person with direct knowledge of the investigation. The person said that, as of early last year, investigators in Delaware and Washington were also probing potential money laundering and Hunter Biden’s foreign ties.

“In addition to the probe into Hunter Biden, federal authorities in the Western District of Pennsylvania are conducting a criminal investigation of a hospital business in which Joe Biden’s brother James was involved. Federal officials have asked questions about James Biden’s role in the business.”

New York Times:
“The tax issues came to the attention of F.B.I. agents after they opened the money laundering investigation into Hunter Biden’s financial affairs in late 2018, under the attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions.”

Does Donald Trump really believe he lost the election? NO!
By Michael D'Antonio
December 10, 2020 CNN

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected President Donald Trump's effort to overturn the presidential election in Pennsylvania. Hours later, the defeated President was back to spreading lies and conspiracy theories about being robbed of victory in an election that he lost to Joe Biden by more than seven million votes.

The madness of Trump's they-stole-it-from-me crusade grows more obvious every day. And it raises a question that has been asked about him for years: Does he really believe what he says?

When Trump was just a businessman and TV celebrity, the answer didn't matter. But now it does.

The man who occupies the highest office in the land is traveling the country in Air Force One, bringing along his Secret Service protectors and his presidential seal, and spreading his nutty claims.

At a rally last week in Valdosta, Ga., he tells his followers, "We're winning!" even as one court after another, in state after state, tosses out his frantic attempts to upend the election by lawsuit. Ranting endlessly on Twitter and Facebook, he insists that victory was stolen from him. But the "evidence of fraud" that he says "is overwhelming" is actually NONEXISTENT.

It's all very crazy. It is also dangerous.

The danger became obvious when, on the night when Trump spoke in Georgia, armed protesters gathered outside a Michigan state official's home to chant and shout obscenities. Their cries of "Stop the steal!" were obviously inspired by the President's delusions. .On Saturday Trump put it this way: "We're all deeply disturbed and upset by the lying, cheating, robbing, stealing that's gone on with our elections."

Michigan was also the place where, authorities said, the governor was the target of a kidnapping plot foiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Fourteen men were arrested. Authorities allege that they talked about executing the governor and burning down the state Capitol. Part of what motivated them, according to court records, was (Trump's other favorite obsession) state restrictions to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Even as cases, hospitalizations and deaths have climbed to new heights across the country, the President has persisted in attacking state and local officials who are fighting the pandemic with scientifically sound methods -- mask requirements and limits on public gatherings. In Georgia, Trump said cities and state "should open up" to business as usual.
That view has put tens of thousands of people -- like the supporters who stand should-to-shoulder without face coverings at his rallies -- at risk of debilitating illness and death. One study by Stanford University estimated that Trump rallies were responsible for about 30,000 extra infections and 700 deaths as of Oct. 30.

Nevertheless, people seem to take pride in putting their lives on the line for Trump, to show they agree with him when he says things like, "Don't be afraid of Covid."

Why would Trump downplay the coronavirus risk and put his supporters in danger? Well, it seems he believed that the business shutdowns many experts recommended to fight the pandemic would hurt him politically. The Washington Post reported Trump felt this way back in July when America had recorded three million cases and 130,000 deaths.

As the US death count more than doubled and cases rose nearly five-fold, other nations fared better with stringent shutdowns and mask requirements. One could only conclude that Trump's continued public call to loosen public health measures was not sincere.

In a similar way, the President's claims about the outcome of the 2020 election seem more an act intended to inspire the faithful to cheer and donate money than a matter of genuine belief.

With his court losses piling up and his lawyers reduced to presenting oddball witnesses at legislative hearings, Donald Trump knows he lost the election. CNN reported weeks ago that he has said so himself. However, by furiously insisting he was cheated and filing lawsuits across the country, he has been able to freeze fellow Republicans, who would otherwise congratulate Biden, and raise scads of money with appeals for a so-called Election Defense Fund.
Of the more than $200 million raised by Trump during the time he has bellowed about being cheated, only a reported $8.8 million has been spent on the lawsuits, according to figures released by the campaign last week and reported in the Washington Post. The rest may be put into a so-called leadership political action committee, which can fund all sorts of activities Trump might enjoy after leaving the White House.

Trump's public denials about the election results will also help him escape the blow to his ego that might come with having to admit he lost fair and square.

Having long established that he thinks that there's little worse in life than losing, Trump's image requires that he refuse to acknowledge a genuine defeat. Instead he will proclaim the American election system to be corrupt, and rally his followers to believe him, even though he knows this is not true.

So where does this leave us, as we consider whether Donald Trump believes the outrageous stuff he says? The only answer is that he doesn't believe it, but he doesn't care what damage he does to his country. Even if it makes people suffer and die, or leads them to take up arms against make believe enemies, he will keep it up for as long as the cash flows in and the faithful tell him he's a winner.

Senator Ben Sasse on Thursday said he expects the Supreme Court to throw out a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.

“I’m no lawyer but I suspect the Supreme Court swats this away,” Sasse said in a statement.

“From the brief, it looks like a fella begging for a pardon filed a PR stunt rather than a lawsuit – as all of its assertions have already been rejected by federal courts and Texas’s own solicitor general isn’t signing on,” the Nebraska Republican said.

Eighteen states joined the lawsuit, filed Monday in the Supreme Court by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, which seeks to block presidential electors in four battleground states from casting their votes for Biden.

The lawsuit argues that the electoral vote should be delayed in Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania as investigations into voting irregularities continue. Texas and the other states are requesting an emergency order to invalidate millions of ballots in the four swing states.

The legal claims in the Texas lawsuit have largely been heard already in lower courts over the course of various cases filed by the Trump team and its allies since the election. All 50 states have already certified their election results.

On Wednesday, the attorneys general of seventeen states Trump won last month filed an amicus brief in the case. The red states that joined that brief are Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia.

Arizona’s Republican attorney general Mark Brnovich filed his own brief expressing his support for the lawsuit despite Biden’s victory in Arizona.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s rejection on Tuesday of a similar lawsuit from Pennsylvania Republicans seeking to invalidate the state’s presidential vote results.

Sasse has been critical of the Trump campaign’s refusal to concede the presidential race and was one of the first Republican senators to recognize Biden as president-elect.

He refused to commit sedition against the Constitution!

“The January 2017 email suggests Hunter Biden made anywhere from $833,614 to more than $2.5 million a year in the second term of the Obama-Biden administration as he and his partners pursued global business deals in Ukraine, Russia, China and other foreign countries. But it also raised questions about his finances and accounting beyond the alleged Burisma tax payment that was overdue. Schwerin’s email suggested Hunter Biden borrowed money from his company, and also had claimed as income monies he did not receive. “You didn’t receive this in cash and it is in reality ‘phantom income,'” Schwerin wrote Hunter Biden in explaining some transactions.”

2004 Bush
2008 Obama
2012 Obama
2016 Trump

But 2020, it's both Biden and Harris. This reinforces the theory thst Biden is just a figure head. Why wouldn't he get this by himself? Because the left doesn't really think much of him. He won't last the entire term.

Media disgraceful in trying to suppress Post’s Hunter Biden reporting.

AP

In high-school journalism classes, teenaged would-be reporters are taught to value curiosity and independent thinking above all. Question powerful people, they’re told, and don’t trust anything anyone says, even if it’s Mom telling you she loves you.

Too bad most actual, adult reporters and editors these days don’t follow these rules when it comes to covering powerful liberals.

Witness the reaction of nearly all mainstream media to The Post’s bombshell reporting on the Hunter Biden Files, which recently garnered yet another boost of verification — this one courtesy of the illustrious vice-presidential son himself, who revealed that federal authorities are probing his “taxes.”

What does the Hunter Biden investigation actually tell us?

Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large
Updated 3:46 AM ET, Fri December 11, 2020

Hunter Biden says he is under tax investigation

(CNN)On Wednesday, we learned that Hunter Biden, the son of President-elect Joe Biden, is under investigation by federal prosecutors in Delaware regarding several financial questions that have arisen as a result of his business dealings in foreign countries -- most notably China.

"I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs," Hunter Biden said on Wednesday. "I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors."

Republicans -- led by President Donald Trump -- rushed to argue that the investigation, which has been reportedly ongoing since 2018, was proof positive that Hunter Biden should have been a bigger issue in the just-concluded 2020 campaign.

"'10% of voters would have changed their vote if they knew about Hunter Biden.' Miranda Devine @nypost @TuckerCarlson," tweeted Trump on Wednesday night. "But I won anyway!"
(Fact check: He didn't.)

Spin aside, it's worth asking the question: How much trouble could Hunter Biden actually be in?

The short answer is we simply don't know yet. And the reason is, at least in part, because it's just so hard to differentiate the spin from the facts.
(Worth noting: Joe Biden is not implicated in any way in the investigation.)

What we know is that Hunter Biden had dealings with Chinese companies both during and after his father served as vice president. Consider:

* In 2013, he became involved with and eventually was placed on the board of a directors of a Chinese investment fund management company known as BHR. He resigned from that role in October 2019 and, in a letter posted to Medium by his lawyer, insisted he had never received any sort of compensation for his role.

* In 2017, Hunter Biden worked on securing a deal with CEFC China Energy to invest in US energy companies. That same year, the founder of CEFC gave Hunter a 2.8-karat diamond during a business meeting in Miami. Hunter Biden told the New Yorker in 2019 that he hadn't kept the diamond. "I knew it wasn't a good idea to take it," he told the New Yorker. "I just felt like it was weird."

What we also know is that in 2019, the FBI seized a laptop purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden and alleged to include business documents and other personal materials.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani steered that information to media outlets in the closing days of the 2020 presidential race, insisting -- again, without any proof -- that the laptop was evidence of Hunter Biden's shady dealings with China, among other countries.

As CNN's Evan Perez and Pamela Brown wrote of the back-and-forth:
"The involvement of Trump lawyers in the published news stories on the purported Biden laptop led to a flurry of activity by Republican lawmakers and the Trump campaign looking to amplify allegations of corruption ahead of the election. The FBI met with a former Hunter Biden business associate who publicly made claims about potential wrongdoing. The FBI issued a statement at the time saying that 'as a general matter when contacted, the FBI reviews information from the public for consideration of any violations of applicable federal laws.'"

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

And well, that's about it. (Yes, we also know that Hunter Biden has struggled with addiction, but that seems to have very little to do with the investigation into his business dealings in China.)

So, what can we conclude based on those facts?

Well, first and most obviously, it's never a good thing to be the subject of a federal investigation. Like, you would rather not be under federal investigation -- all other things being equal. (For those who think they see the hidden hand of Attorney General -- and Trump consigliere -- Bill Barr in this, the investigation reportedly predates Barr's time as the nation's top cop.)

And we know -- and have known -- that it was a bad look for Hunter Biden to be sitting on the boards of foreign companies (Hunter was also on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company) while his dad was the sitting vice president of the United States.
Hunter acknowledged as much in an interview with ABC News in October 2019.

"I did nothing wrong at all," Hunter Biden said. "However, was it poor judgment to be in the middle of something that is -- it's a swamp, in many ways? Yeah. Did I do anything improper? No, not in any way. Not in any way whatsoever." Later in the interview he added this: "You know what? I'm a human. And you know what, did I make a mistake? Well, maybe in the grand scheme of things, yeah. But did I make a mistake based on some unethical lapse? Absolutely not."

That is the point on which all of this rests. While it may have been a mistake from a perception standpoint for Hunter Biden to sit on foreign boards, that doesn't mean that any laws were broken. What passes for guilt in the court of public opinion often would get you laughed out of a court of law.

So that's where we are.

The investigation is ongoing. We need to wait to see what it turns up -- if anything. Only then will we be able to definitely ascertain how much trouble Hunter Biden is actually in.
