Studies on Mask wearing

New Study Shows Mask Mandates Had Zero Effect in Florida or Nationwide

Florida
“When counties DID have a mandate in effect, there were 667,239 cases over 3,137 days with an average of 23 cases per 100,000 per day. When counties DID NOT have a countywide order, there were 438,687 cases over 12,139 days with an average of 22 cases per 100,000 per day.”
National
“When states DID have a mandate in effect, there were 9,605,256 cases over 5,907 total days and averaged 27 cases per 100,000 per day. When states DID NOT have a statewide order there were 5,781,716 cases over 5,772 total days averaging 17 cases per 100,000 people per day"

This study was once again in line with other mask mandate studies, including the Danish study that showed a statistically insignificant 0.3% difference in the infection rate between the thousands (in their study) that wore masks vs the thousands that did not.

You would need to read the article and make your own assessment. But these are not simply differences in population density or other factors. These are fairly consistent across the board, and consistent from the statewide standpoint that I have been tracking since the start. There simply hasn't been numeric solid empirical evidence that proves that mask mandates are reducing cases. So far there is a much closer relation between weather and the virus (it got better as spring moved into summer and it is getting worse as fall moves into winter) than there has been with anything else.

On the flip side, the Mayo Clinic retorted with a curious and cute study where they put two manikins approximately three feet apart facing each other. They then simulated a projectile of sneeze like substance to come from one of the manikins that was aimed directly at the the other manikin. The study showed that when the two manikins were wearing masks, that less of the projectile sneeze substance made it through both masks than when the manikins were not wearing masks.

As if I needed a study to guess that? But the real question is why are we studying the effects of what amounts to a sniper attempt to infect someone with a sneeze. Rather than tell people to wear masks and aim their sneezes at each other's faces, why not just tell people to turn their head and cover their mouths when they sneeze? In fact, you probably don't even have to tell people to do that. It's generally accepted common curtesy. Guessing not a single droplet gets through when that normal precaution is taken.

But what does it tell you when respected medical organizations are tasked with studying projectile sneezes rather than running real studies in real life situations with live people and real data? Could it be that the predictable results of the former might make a better talking point than the consistent results of the latter?

Someone gave the Mayo Clinic money to perform this study, likely with the intent to use the Clinic's reputation as a means to convince people that the study was important.

Are you really impressed that a study was held to show that less sneeze droplets get through two sets of masks vs one or no masks - when said sneeze is aimed directly at someone else at a three foot distance?

Did the idea that the "Mayo Clinic" was attached to the study convince you that it was important? Perhaps their propaganda worked!

The lame duck President did have some success

1: He may have historical success in the middle east. Several Arabic governments have acknowledged that Israel is a legitimate nation.

2: Operation Warp Speed has been historically successful. Developing vaccines in just a few months is historically significant!

But a crisis is an opportunity for historical success. He downplayed it because he worried about the top one percent!

Roger - do you know what the word Empathy means?

C.H. Truth said...

btw... Lydia was right about you Roger!

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Empathy means you have feelings for others than yourself.

C.H. Truth said...

Actually that is not what Empathy means.

Empathy is the ability to understand someone else's feelings because of the fact that you have experienced something similar or even the same.

Sympathy is attempting being sympathetic to what someone else is "going through" in spite of maybe not having a deeper personal understanding.

A person attending the funeral of a spouse of a friend might have empathy if they also had a spouse die, because they would understand. Otherwise, they would have "sympathy" by imagining what they must be going through, even if it has not happened to them.

I might have sympathy for what happened to your life after you lost your shit and ended up begging for money and threatening suicide. But I don't have "empathy" for it, because I have never been in that place.

Some good news NBC news

WASHINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden's coronavirus advisory team consulted scientists and supply chain experts about whether he should invoke a wartime production law to help produce and administer more Covid-19 vaccines, two advisers familiar with the discussions said.

President Donald Trump has already invoked the Defense Production Act, or DPA, to speed the production of medical supplies and components to test for the coronavirus, and he has raised the possibility of using the law again for vaccines. Manufacturers have said there could be a shortage of components to make the vaccines.

Biden will probably reverse the APA plan to build the wall, and use it to expedite the vaccine distribution.

A GATHERING OF ALL THE PRESIDENT'S NUT CASES

The Guardian
The Trump White House has entered its final stage: complete meltdown

Richard Wolffe

The last days of the Trump presidency increasingly resemble the fictional presidency in the movie Monsters vs Aliens.

In case you missed this 2009 animated masterpiece, President Hathaway (voiced by Stephen Colbert) responds to an alien invasion with a team of unlikely heroes, among them a giant-sized TV reporter from Modesto, a cockroach turned-mad-scientist, and an enormous blob of Jell-O.

One of the running gags is that the president has installed two red buttons in his situation room. One is to make his morning latte, the other to launch all his nuclear weapons. He can never remember which is which.

In the final month of Donald Trump’s time in the Oval Office, he has at last assembled his own team of outsized odds and ends, self-aggrandizing wingnuts, and brainless lumps of gelatin. You can decide for yourself if this latest incarnation of his “elite strike force” of advisers is more likely to launch all the nuclear weapons or make a fresh cup of coffee.

At the center of the team to save Planet Trump are the unhinged characters of Sidney Powell and Michael Flynn, who reportedly met with the soon-to-be-ex-president in the White House over several hours on Friday.

Both Powell and Flynn have previously been fired by the reality TV star turned president – who, after all, built a public persona around firing people on The Apprentice. But on Planet Trump, firings are not as final as they appear to be, which surely means it’s not too late for the Mooch to extend his 10-day record of service to the nation.

Powell was ejected from the elite strike force of lawyers just one month ago for her outlandish claims that Joe Biden won the presidential election with mysterious “communist money” and the support of the long-deceased Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

But that was so November. Now, as the New York Times first reported, Powell’s outlandish claims are the basis for Trump’s desire to name her as special counsel to investigate the Venezuelan plot.

Trump’s attorney general, Bill Barr, told reporters on Monday that he saw no need to name a special counsel to investigate either the election or Biden’s son Hunter.

But it is only a matter of time before Powell disinters the Chavismo corpse once more. Specifically, a couple of days: Barr leaves his office on Wednesday, mysteriously a few weeks before everyone else in the Trump administration.

Friday’s surreal bull session included Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser, who has the distinct honor of having been fired by both Obama and Trump – a rare point of agreement between the yin and yang of the American presidency. Flynn lied to Mike Pence and the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador, pleading guilty to the felony as part of the Mueller investigation.

Newly pardoned by the man who fired him, Flynn is now reportedly advocating for Trump to invoke martial law to re-run the election. This would normally be key to executing a Chavista coup, but is obviously now the victim of a Chavista coup.

One of the ringleaders of this madcap gang is Patrick Byrne, the former CEO of Overstock, who left the online retailer last year claiming that he had romanced a Russian agent on behalf of “the Men in Black”. Good luck making sense of that, or Byrne’s latest venture: what he calls “a team of hackers and cybersleuths and other people with odd skills”. For Trump’s favorite news channel, OAN, this constitutes an “elite cybersecurity team”.

It’s quite possible that “elite” means something else on Planet Trump. It’s also possible there are giant-sized TV reporters in Modesto.

This is the self-defeating, nonsensical house that Trump built

Byrne, who tweeted that he was part of the long White House session with Flynn and Powell, says that Trump is being lied to by his own advisers and that his buddy can still win the election he so clearly lost.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

“It is 100% winnable. No martial law required,” he tweeted. “Sydney [sic] and Flynn presented a course that I estimate has 50%-75% chance of victory. His staff just try to convince him to do nothing but accept it. As a CEO, my heart broke to see what he is going through. He is betrayed from within.”

It must have been heartbreaking to sit in the bunker, watching reason and the constitution push their way into the conversation, while our brave reality TV star battled against his own disloyal lackeys.

Sadly the sickness is not confined to the Oval Office and will outlive its current occupant. Back on Earth, there is no chance of Trump successfully ordering the military to intervene in the election, and no chance of Congress overturning the electoral college. But these pesky facts won’t stop the Trumpista movement that is now the Republican party.

Take Clay Higgins, the duly elected representative for Louisiana’s third district. Higgins is a reserve law enforcement officer with a strained relationship to reality, having made his name videoing outlandish Crime Stoppers messages that his own sheriff told him to stop.

“If Biden is inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States on January 20th, it will mark the final hour of conspiracy to dismantle the American election process, and the first hour of conspiracy to dismantle America,” Higgins tweeted on Sunday.

Normal presidents treat their final weeks in office like a presidential marshmallow test. While they may want, desperately, to opine about everything the president-elect is doing, they delay their gratification for their memoirs.

They may be hoping for a post-presidential mission or at least some post-presidential reassessment of their place in history. But they maintain a dignified silence to buy themselves a little dignity after leaving office.

That’s clearly not the Trump plan. There are no post-presidential missions, or historical reassessments. There are only more outrageous threats and tweets to cap a brief political career overflowing with outrageous threats and tweets.

This is the self-defeating, nonsensical house that Trump built.

“What idiot designed this?” President Hathaway asks his advisers about the twin red buttons in Monsters vs Aliens.

“You did, sir,” says a general.

“OK. Then go fire someone,” the president shoots back.

Soon, there will be nobody left to fire. Or rehire. There will just be a Donald Trump, surrounded by a room full of wackadoodle theories with no staff to pretend to take them seriously.

I know I don't "hate" anyone. There is certainly a lot of political disagreement about a large amount of issues. But it's not my side that is burning things down, attempting to socially "cancel" (eliminate) anyone who disagrees with them, or otherwise making "lists" and such.

That is your side, entirely your side... and never in history has this sort of branding of political enemies and trying to prevent voices from being heard EVER been on the right side of history. The attempts to shut off free speech with violence, social attacks, and financial assaults have always been the tools of facists.

Every. Single. Time.

There are economists who claim that deficit spending by our government is immune from the economic principles that govern all other financial transactions; that deficit spending by government is neutral, and even beneficial. Certainly in the short term, such as during war, increasing the debt is a necessary evil. But as debt increases faster than tax receipts, I have a difficult time understanding how that structural imbalance will not harm the value of our currency and make it more difficult to borrow in the future.

But we will do nothing about it, as the erstwhile conservative-ish party carefully ignores its own political philosophy and gleefully votes for more and more and more spending, because buying votes is more important than principles! We are rapidly approaching a $28T national debt, which is a number that in reality means nothing. We will never pay that debt. We will never make a dent in it. We will continue to spend until the non-negotiable costs of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid approach total tax receipts.

And then what? Raise taxes of course. Which decreases investment in the economy and will never raise the projected amounts.

And then what? Raise taxes of course!

Rand Paul delivers blistering floor speech opposing ‘monster’ COVID spending bill, says GOP ‘no better’ than Dems

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/391784.php

“This bill is free money for everyone. Proponents don’t care if you’re fully employed, or own your own house, or own your own business,” Paul said. “Free money for everyone, they cry — and yet, if free money were the answer, if money really grew on trees, why not give more free money? Why not give it out all the time?”

“Why stop at $600 a person? Why not $1,000? Why not $2,000?” he added. Maybe these new ‘Free-Money Republicans’ should join the ‘Everybody-Gets-A-Guaranteed-Income Caucus’? Why not $20,000 a year for everybody, why not $30,000? If we can print out money with impunity, why not do it?”

Paul reminded his colleagues that the end result is a U.S. dollar that has no value.

“To so-called conservatives who are quick to identify the socialism of Democrats: If you vote for this spending monstrosity, you are no better,” he said. “When you vote to pass out free money, you lose your soul and you abandon forever any semblance of moral or fiscal integrity.”

The senator would go into detail about how dire the fiscal picture is in America as Congress approved $600 relief checks for everyone — and drew fire from people for that after previously passing stimulus payments of $1,200 per adult.

“If you’re looking for more COVID bailout money, we don’t have any. The coffers are bare,” he said. “Congress has spent all the money long ago.”

The bill also provides a temporary $300 weekly boost to unemployment benefits, and over $280 billion for Paycheck Protection Program loans for businesses. Schools and colleges will get $82 billion in funding, and there is another $25 billion for rental assistance and an extension of the eviction moratorium.

Sen. Paul called out the “overzealous” actions of local and state officials, saying that Congress is only helping “to perpetuate these lockdowns.”

“We are borrowing and worsening this debt crisis in part because too many governors and mayors have imposed heavy-handed restrictions that crush business,” he said. “It isn’t the pandemic that’s killing the economy, it’s the government’s overzealous response that is killing the economy.”

“The more money that we give to the states the more they keep us in lockdown. Every bailout dollar printed and passed out to the governor only allows these tinpot dictators to perpetuate the lockdowns,” Paul charged. “Their rules are arbitrary and unscientific. Governors and mayors across the country are picking winners and losers.”

You had five investigations and partisan political attempts to spin the facts into something nefarious?

Didn't you just post something the other day that posted the "lie" that Paul Manafort was conspiring with Russian operatives, when in fact the "operative" was a long time Manafort employee who US intelligence had just thought at one time to be linked to Russian intelligence (in general) but never actually confirmed anything.

According to local sources, the GOP is doing a much better job at getting early voting and mail in ballots cast for Perdue and Loeffler. in fact, the buzz is that the huge advantage that Democrats had during the general has been significantly cut.

That could mean that their same day voting advantage might not be as large, but it also suggests that GOP enthusiasm right now is greater than it was in the General election. Perhaps the fact that Trump lost by 10,000 votes (after winning by over 200,000 in 2016) has lit a fire under the collective asses of the GOP.

We also have to take into consideration that Perdue got about 85K more votes than Ossoff in the general and that the GOP candidates were over 50% in the other run-off. In neither cases did the Democrat come anywhere near 50% (which is what is needed in a run-off).

Pretty much everyone (on both sides) are saying that while it will be close, they would rather be the Republicans right now.

Trump is using every legal means available to him. Why would you expect anything differently. The past two Republican Presidents have had to endure election challenges (Both Gore and Kerry challenged those elections in court and asked for recounts and such). Wisconsin and others were challenged in 2016.

Apparently it's considered just part of the process and completely acceptable when Democrats challenge results? Right now we have two Congressional races where Republicans are ahead in the counts and Democrats have been challenging and are still challenging... and will challenge all the way to the House of Representatives if the legal challenges fail (as they did in Iowa).

But you didn't have any issues with any of those challenges and I am quite certain that you would applaud Pelosi and the Democrats if they stripped the legally certified winner of the Iowa-02 election and installed a Democrat instead.

Trump's challenges will go away because there is only so much time. The electoral college has already voted and within a few weeks Biden will be sworn in... and you will pretend that nothing ever happened.

But not only did Trump have his election win challenged in courts, he had to endure lasting congressional investigations, and a Special Counsel WHILE he was already sworn in as President.

All to prove (unsuccessfully) that he didn't actually win the election he just won.

Your hypocrisy is duly noted...

Since exposing us to your hypocrisy was surely your point here.

RICH LOWRY: Joe Biden’s climate agenda is all about creating a crisis — not actually fixing one.

As Thomas Sowell said in 2004, “There’s something Eric Hoffer said: ‘Intellectuals cannot operate at room temperature.’ There always has to be a crisis–some terrible reason why their superior wisdom and virtue must be imposed on the unthinking masses. It doesn’t matter what the crisis is. A hundred years ago it was eugenics. At the time of the first Earth Day a generation ago, the big scare was global cooling, a big ice age. They go from one to the other. It meets their psychological needs and gives them a reason for exercising their power.”

GB's latest lockdown is partial thanks to neil ferguson, chief fuckstick in charge of the 'rona at imperial college, and the clown who infected some whore who gave it to her cuck husband.

President-elect Joe Biden said Tuesday that his administration will retaliate for a massive cyberattack that targeted U.S. government agencies and is believed to have been carried out by Russian hackers.

“When I learn the extent of the damage and in fact who is formally responsible, they can be assured that we will respond. And probably respond in kind. There’s many options, which I will not discuss now,” Biden said during a press conference with reporters that followed his remarks on the coronavirus pandemic, cybersecurity and the upcoming Christmas holiday.

Believe me I get it, the last several years my kids, sister her hubby, plus a few MOTs I played rugby with always met at Canton House on Buford Hwy for Christmas. Afterwards the MOTs went to see a movie and the rest of us exchanged gifts. Sadly I think that won’t happen this year.
