But the CDC's framework adopted different priorities. Of its five proposed principles—maximize benefits and minimize harms, equity, justice, fairness, and transparency—two explicitly mention racial health disparities.
“The equity principle,” [CDC epidemiologist Sara] Oliver said, according to meeting notes, will “make sure that vaccine allocation reduces, rather than increases, health disparities,” while the “fairness principle includes a commitment to … not exacerbating existing disparities in health outcomes.”
This is a follow up of a previous thread that simply provided the data. But now we have information on the actual thought process that the CDC used to come up with the decision to vaccinate essential workers over the elderly and medically vunerable.
As previously suggested, according to the CDC's own assessment, prioritizing the elderly and medically vulnerable would have the biggest impact in saving lives with a 25% decrease in deaths based on the time frame the report was covering. Whereas putting essential and healthcare workers first would only show a 10% decrease in deaths over that same time period.
But apparently, the CDC sees it as more important to reduce the "racial disparities" versus actually reducing the overall amount of deaths. So because the most effective way to reduce overall deaths would also reduce more white deaths (as the elderly tend to be more white) - that was considered to be the wrong way to go about it.
If, for a moment, this seems fair. Keep in mind that it's not about saving more minority lives. Nobody is necessarily arguing that more minority lives will be save. If that was the case, then most people could probably go along with. Rather it is literally about allowing more elderly to die, which because it will include more white people, it reduces the death disparity between the races.
Bottom line: The CDC has decided to work to save a smaller percentage of the overall population because it will be more racially fair. But in doing do, they are allowing two and a half times more people to die in order to achieve that fairness. If this is the new manner of medical science, then I question the overall sanity of our medical community.

If they OBJECTIVELY provided the vaccine to those most vulnerable to the disease (elderly and people with preexisting conditions) - it would reduce the amount of deaths by 25%.
The decision (by doctors and politicians at the CDC) is to prioritize the needs of the few (who are less vulnerable) over the needs of the many who are more vulnerable.
Regardless of whether or not you believe the CDC's own words (that they must adopt five principles, four of which have to nothing to do with saving lives) - that is the CDC decision.
The CDC decided to watch more people die in order to abide by "equity, justice, fairness, and transparency" - which is explicitly suggested BY THE CDC to take race into consideration.
So you can defend it all you want... and you can hope that none of your nursing home buddies die over the next few months from Covid. Because it would likely be a life or two that could have been saved.

Approximately 30 times more elderly people have died than young people.
To be perfectly blunt. I don't believe that the difference between giving the vaccine to health care workers and other "essential" workers versus the most vulnerable is only 15%. I would suspect that if we took the numbers at face value that it would be much higher. The 25% - 10% already likely has some questionable variables to make it even that close.
We have never seen a virus that has this sort of disparity regarding age.
