The President pardons Manafort, Stone, and Papadapoulos

Will Rick Gates be next? Cohen is staying in prison!

Look, there is no question that Special Counsel Robert Mueller abused his power in his quest to find the holy grail of Russian collusion. The problem (sometimes) isn't that the FBI cannot break the bad guys down, but rather the problem might be that there was no crimes and the bad guys are not really bad.

Flynn was investigated for nothing and charged with lying to FBI agents who didn't believe he lied. Papadopoulos was charged for misleading the FBI when there was confusion over whether or not he had cleared background checks and was officially working for the Trump campaign on a particular date. Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were charged with crimes that are never charged, and Manafort was charged with supposed bank fraud that the SEC didn't charge them with, and supposed tax fraud that the IRS never charged him with.

I get that people will see this as "personal" for the President and it most likely is. But let's not forget that it was "personal" for the FBI and Special Counsel who became little more than rogue cops trying to set people they didn't like up for fake crimes. So let's just say that it evens itself out, other than the time that these people already spent facing charges, going to court, and even doing time.

Trump Completes His Russian Collusion Cover Up
9:29 am
Jonathan Chait:
“The official White House statement justifying the pardon of Paul Manafort explains that his prosecution ‘was premised on the Russian collusion hoax.’ But Trump’s pardon — a ploy so well signaled its inevitability was clear even before he stepped into the Oval Office and that he has floated for years to keep Manafort quiet — is the final proof the Russia investigation was not a hoax but a scandal Trump used his powers to thwart.

“Trump has already pardoned Michael Flynn and commuted the sentence of Roger Stone, both of whom lied to investigators to protect him. The Manafort pardon is the final piece of his Russiagate cover-up.”

Elie Honig:
“Every significant Mueller defendant who refused to cooperate (or started but then stopped) has now been pardoned.

“Only Rick Gates and Michael Cohen — both of whom testified publicly, in court or Congress — have not been pardoned.”

Flashback Quote of the Day
“Pardoning Manafort would be seen as a political disaster for the President. There may come a day down the road, after the politics have changed that you’d want to consider an application of him like everybody else, but now would be a disaster.”

And? So what?

That can be entirely true and not mean a thing, since "large COVID-linked droplets" are not a normal way of having the virus spread. If it actually took large droplets to get from one person to another to spread the virus, then that virus would have been over and done a long time ago.

But here is the real question Rog...

If masks worked 99.9% of the time because they cut out "large COVID-linked droplets" then why are the mask mandates not working and why are there 30,000 cases a day in your State (which has some of the most stringent mandates and most vigilant mask wearing of any state)?

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization now recommend cloth masks for the general public, but earlier in the pandemic, both organizations recommended just the opposite. These shifting guidelines may have sowed confusion among the public about the utility of masks.

But health experts say the evidence is clear that masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and that the more people wearing masks, the better.

We talked to UC San Francisco epidemiologist George Rutherford, MD, and infectious disease specialist Peter Chin-Hong, MD, about the CDC’s reversal on mask-wearing, the current science on how masks work, and what to consider when choosing a mask.

Why did the CDC change its guidance on wearing masks?

The original CDC guidance partly was based on what was thought to be low disease prevalence earlier in the pandemic, said Chin-Hong.

“So, of course, you’re preaching that the juice isn’t really worth the squeeze to have the whole population wear masks in the beginning – but that was really a reflection of not having enough testing, anyway,” he said. “We were getting a false sense of security.”

Rutherford was more blunt. The legitimate concern that the limited supply of surgical masks and N95 respirators should be saved for health care workers should not have prevented more nuanced messaging about the benefits of masking. “We should have told people to wear cloth masks right off the bat,” he said.

Another factor “is that culturally, the U.S. wasn’t really prepared to wear masks,” unlike some countries in Asia where the practice is more common, said Chin-Hong. Even now, some Americans are choosing to ignore CDC guidance and local mandates on masks, a hesitation that Chin-Hong says is “foolhardy.”

What may have finally convinced the CDC to change its guidance in favor of masks were rising disease prevalence and a clearer understanding that both pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic transmission are possible – even common. Studies have found that viral load peaks in the days before symptoms begin and that speaking is enough to expel virus-carrying droplets.

“I think the biggest thing with COVID now that shapes all of this guidance on masks is that we can’t tell who’s infected,” said Chin-Hong. “You can’t look in a crowd and say, oh, that person should wear mask. There’s a lot of asymptomatic infection, so everybody has to wear a mask.”

What evidence do we have that wearing a mask is effective in preventing COVID-19?

There are several strands of evidence supporting the efficacy of masks.

One category of evidence comes from laboratory studies of respiratory droplets and the ability of various masks to block them. An experiment using high-speed video found that hundreds of droplets ranging from 20 to 500 micrometers were generated when saying a simple phrase, but that nearly all these droplets were blocked when the mouth was covered by a damp washcloth. Another study of people who had influenza or the common cold found that wearing a surgical mask significantly reduced the amount of these respiratory viruses emitted in droplets and aerosols.

But the strongest evidence in favor of masks come from studies of real-world scenarios. “The most important thing are the epidemiologic data,” said Rutherford. Because it would be unethical to assign people to not wear a mask during a pandemic, the epidemiological evidence has come from so-called “experiments of nature.”

A recent study published in Health Affairs, for example, compared the COVID-19 growth rate before and after mask mandates in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It found that mask mandates led to a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rate, which became more apparent over time. The first five days after a mandate, the daily growth rate slowed by 0.9 percentage-points compared to the five days prior to the mandate; at three weeks, the daily growth rate had slowed by 2 percentage-points.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates.

Two compelling case reports also suggest that masks can prevent transmission in high-risk scenarios, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford. In one case, a man flew from China to Toronto and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He had a dry cough and wore a mask on the flight, and all 25 people closest to him on the flight tested negative for COVID-19. In another case, in late May, two hair stylists in Missouri had close contact with 140 clients while sick with COVID-19. Everyone wore a mask and none of the clients tested positive.

Do masks protect the people wearing them or the people around them?

“I think there’s enough evidence to say that the best benefit is for people who have COVID-19 to protect them from giving COVID-19 to other people, but you’re still going to get a benefit from wearing a mask if you don’t have COVID-19,” said Chin-Hong.

Masks may be more effective as a “source control” because they can prevent larger expelled droplets from evaporating into smaller droplets that can travel farther.

Another factor to remember, noted Rutherford, is that you could still catch the virus through the membranes in your eyes, a risk that masking does not eliminate.

How many people need to wear masks to reduce community transmission?

“What you want is 100 percent of people to wear masks, but you’ll settle for 80 percent,” said Rutherford. In one simulation, researchers predicted that 80 percent of the population wearing masks would do more to reduce COVID-19 spread than a strict lockdown.

C.H. Truth said...

The medical expert say that because most people followed the rules, the infection and death rates were much lower than without masking and social distancing.

Well Roger...

The "facts" say something different than the opinions. The "facts" show that there simply isn't much (if any difference). How is it that in Minnesota we are seeing more cases today (when we have a strict mandate) than we did when there was no mandate and 70% of the people were not wearing masks?

Why isn't everyone in Sweden dead, since they largely have had no mandates and some of the lowest rate of mask wearing and social distancing in the whole world?

The Medical community (such as Dr Fauci) will overemphasize something like mask wearing because there is little incentive not to. Fauci has not admitted lying to the public not just once, but now twice (mask effectiveness and now herd immunity). He has provided us with different reasons for not being honest, but he wasn't honest because he felt it was better to keep us in the dark (for our own good).

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The latest forecast from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation suggests that 33,000 deaths could be avoided by October 1 if 95 percent of people wore masks in public.

Even if you live in a community where few people wear masks, you would still reduce your own chances of catching the virus by wearing one, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford.

Does the type of mask matter?

Studies have compared various mask materials, but for the general public, the most important consideration may be comfort. The best mask is one you can wear comfortably and consistently, said Chin-Hong. N95 respirators are only necessary in medical situations such as intubation. Surgical masks are generally more protective than cloth masks, and some people find them lighter and more comfortable to wear.

The bottom line is that any mask that covers the nose and mouth will be of benefit.

“The concept is risk reduction rather than absolute prevention,” said Chin-Hong. “You don’t throw up your hands if you think a mask is not 100 percent effective. That’s silly. Nobody’s taking a cholesterol medicine because they’re going to prevent a heart attack 100 percent of the time, but you’re reducing your risk substantially.”

However, both Rutherford and Chin-Hong cautioned against N95 masks with valves (commonly used in construction to prevent the inhalation of dust) because they do not protect those around you. These one-way valves close when the wearer breathes in, but open when the wearer breathes out, allowing unfiltered air and droplets to escape. Chin-Hong said that anyone wearing a valved mask would need to wear a surgical or cloth mask over it. "Alternatively, just wear a non-valved mask," he said.

San Francisco has specified that masks with valves do not comply with the city's face covering order.

If we’re practicing social distancing, do we still need to wear masks?

A mnemonic that Chin-Hong likes is the “Three W’s to ward off COVID-19:” wearing a mask, washing your hands, and watching your distance.

“But of the three, the most important thing is wearing a mask,” he said. Compared to wearing a mask, cleaning your iPhone or wiping down your groceries are “just distractors.” There’s little evidence that fomites (contaminated surfaces) are a major source of transmission, whereas there is a lot of evidence of transmission through inhaled droplets, said Chin-Hong.

“You should always wear masks and socially distance,” said Rutherford. “I would be hesitant to try to parse it apart. But, yes, I think mask wearing is more important.”

But I find it sad when medical professionals decide to use anecdotal examples to forward a claim.

The truth is that when you put it all together (limited activity, social distancing, hand washing, wearing masks, avoiding contact in general) - that it can make a difference.

But as we are seeing "RIGHT NOW" in America, the fact that we have entered cold and flu season and Covid is technically a cold, that no matter what we really attempt to do as humans to stop the spread, the virus is one step ahead and is winning the battle.

If this was Covid vs the Humans control everything crowd, then the referee should step in and declare Covid the winner by TKO over the Humans control everything crowd, because Covid is kicking their collective asses!

re the media era

Psychological researchers are seeking ways to pry people loose from their confirmation biases. The psychologist Gary Klein suggests stimulating people’s curiosity to overcome their fixations. You can also undermine people’s assumptions by showing them surprising facts that resonate beyond the partisan echo chamber. While some Americans have been sucked into an inescapable extremist vortex, others are still open to data that may change their minds — which is why the 2020 presidential election yielded a different result from 2016.

The world’s most effective persuaders are advertisers, who constantly get people to buy stuff they didn’t realize they needed. Turn them loose on the information problem and they’ll find ways to intrigue us with information we didn’t realize we needed, too.

Because a counterspeech advertising program leverages — rather than upends — social sites’ algorithms, it’s likely to be far more palatable to tech giants than more drastic alternatives like repealing Section 230. Because it fits neatly into the existing site experience, it won’t disrupt users. And because it connects Americans to content that challenges one-sided narratives, it has the potential to take us back to a shared reality, instead of each of us having our own filtered set of facts.

This is a path back to sanity from the toxic shattering of reality that Facebook, Twitter, and Google have visited upon us. We can get to work on it as soon as Joe Biden’s FCC commissioners are confirmed. And we can put the power of social networks to work pulling the nation together, instead of tearing it apart.

Another Flawed Data Model From Imperial College To Blame For Latest UK Lockdown

The source behind the claim that a new COVID-19 strain in the UK is 70% more transmissible, Dr. Erik Volz of Imperial College, admits that the model that produced that statistic is flawed and that it is “too early to tell” if the strain is more easily spread.

On Saturday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced extreme new measures just before the holidays due to the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant. Per Johnson, as well as the UK’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty who also spoke at Saturday’s press conference, the new strain – nicknamed VUI-202012/01 – is around 70% more transmissible, but no evidence shows it to be any more severe or deadly than previous strains.

According to the BBC, Johnson’s assertion that the new variant “may be up to 70% more transmissible,” was based on the information discussed the day prior by the UK government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, or NERVTAG. Yet, as the BBC notes, this figure apparently comes from a single source, a 10 minute presentation delivered by Dr. Erik Volz of Imperial College given last Friday, the same day as the NERVTAG meeting.

Volz – a close colleague of the discredited Neil Ferguson – delivered the presentation to COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK), a research consortium largely funded by the UK government and the Wellcome Trust and, in particular, the Wellcome Sanger Institute. The Wellcome Sanger Institute recently came under fire for “misusing” the DNA of Africans to develop a “gene chip without proper legal agreements” and an upcoming Unlimited Hangout report will detail the ties of the Wellcome Trust to the UK eugenics movement, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Notably, the Wellcome-funded scientist behind that vaccine candidate, Adrian Hill, was recently quoted by the Washington Post as saying that “We’re in the bizarre position of wanting COVID to stay, at least for a little while…But cases are declining.” The UK government, Google and other powerful stakeholders are positioned to profit from sales of that particular vaccine candidate.
