McConnell Statement

Take it at face value and judge it for yourself

The House of Representatives has voted to impeach the President. The Senate process will now begin at our first regular meeting following receipt of the article from the House.
Given the rules, procedures, and Senate precedents that govern presidential impeachment trials, there is simply no chance that a fair or serious trial could conclude before President-elect Biden is sworn in next week. The Senate has held three presidential impeachment trials. They have lasted 83 days, 37 days, and 21 days respectively.
Even if the Senate process were to begin this week and move promptly, no final verdict would be reached until after President Trump had left office. This is not a decision I am making; it is a fact. The President-elect himself stated last week that his inauguration on January 20 is the ‘quickest’ path for any change in the occupant of the presidency.
In light of this reality, I believe it will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden Administration. I am grateful to the offices and institutions within the Capitol that are working around the clock, alongside federal and local law enforcement, to prepare for a safe and successful inauguration at the Capitol next Wednesday.

Does this sound like a guy itching to vote yes on impeachment? To be clear, eventually this will no longer be Mitch McConnell's decision. Ultimately the decision to move forward with an impeachment trial against an ex-President that has no chance to succeed might end up being made by Chuck Schumer once he has become Senate Majority leader (assuming no last minute change of Party decisions).

Now some will argue that the Senate will have no choice but to hold a trial. Others are arguing that holding an impeachment trial to remove someone not in office is not only moot, but unconstitutional. I doubt that any of the legalities really matter anymore. Impeachment has been reduced to an every other year hyper-partisan political event where things that cannot possibly be seen as crimes become impeachable offenses.

Make no mistake. The entire pretense of the Ukrainian impeachment was a means to go on the offense in light of obvious problems that were being exposed with Hunter and Joe Biden. Between the impeachment (making it appear that even investigating Hunter was criminal) and the major networks refusing to cover the fact that Hunter is under FBI investigation, that whole strategy ended up working.

This impeachment was really the same sort of situation. They want to literally make it not only socially and politically damaging to bring up any questions about election fraud, but they want to actually give the impression that it's illegal to do so. The underlying pretense to all of this is that the crowd was riled up over allegations of election fraud which led to the riots. Therefore, bringing up election fraud was akin to instigating.

It's a way (just as it was when they were protecting Hunter Biden) to make sure that any truths come to light, that they do not wish to deal with. They are basically bullying any dissent in any and all means possible.

Compare and contrast the manner in which liberals were able to keep the Russian collusion hoax alive and well for well over two years after Trump was elected, versus how hard these same people are working to make sure NO questions are allowed as it pertains to this election.

Two months after he lost the election, Mr. Trump repeatedly told his followers that they could still stop Mr. Biden from becoming president.

"Now it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy. And after this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. … We are going to the Capitol, and we are going to try and give — the Democrats are hopeless, they are never voting for anything, not even one vote, but we are going to try — give our Republicans, the weak ones, because the strong ones don’t need any of our help, we’re try — going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

________

FROM WIKI:
The impeachment of Bill Clinton was initiated on October 8, 1998, when the United States House of Representatives voted to commence impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States, for "high crimes and misdemeanors." The specific charges against Clinton were lying under oath and obstruction of justice. The charges stemmed from a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Clinton by Paula Jones and from Clinton's testimony denying that he had engaged in a sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The catalyst for the president's impeachment was the Starr Report, a September 1998 report prepared by Independent Counsel Ken Starr for the House Judiciary Committee.

We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated. I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. Today we will see whether Republicans stand strong for integrity of our elections, but whether or not they stand strong for our country, our country. Our country has been under siege for a long time, far longer than this four-year period. We’ve set it on a much straighter course.

See my newspaper article in the next thread up.
You're all welcome!

Meanwhile:
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AMERICAN HISTORY THANKS TO DONALD TRUMP:

Entire National Mall to Close on Inauguration Day
10:54 am
“The entire National Mall will be closed for Inauguration Day, only accessible by media and security personnel,” the Washington Post reports.

“The extraordinary closure is the latest in a series of security measures to harden the city against the type of violence that rocked the Capitol on Jan. 6. Local and federal officials had already established a downtown security zone and called up more than 20,000 National Guard troops to protect the presidential swearing in on Jan. 20.”
___________

Now that's interesting. It means that all across America we will be experiencing the Inauguration as one, virtually. And the same will be true for all else that takes place that day.

And that too is a kind of unity, unintendedly tendered us by The Donald.

I raised the question:
Like lying about having an affair with an intern?

The Wiki article I cited above indicates that the charge of lying was based on Clinton's lying denial of sexual affairs.

Yet he was not convicted, which indicates that those lies were not deemed (seen as) "high crimes and misdemeanors."

Now, maybe someone can explain to me where I have lied.

Well if something can be alleged... then it must be true, huh? No need to otherwise prove the allegation. Rather then provide any actual evidence that the President actually was part of the literal planning of the "riot" or that those who actually "rioted" were moved to do so because of specific calls for it by the President...

We get nonsensical speeches about morality, ethics, integrity, or quotes from leaders saying inspirational things that have nothing to do with the situation.

Donald Trump will be a private citizen in 6 days. Private citizens are not under the jurisdiction of the Senate. Impeachment is a means to address situations that general Law Enforcement is not allowed to do with certain leaders (such as the President). Impeachment is a substitute for the normal legal process. Constitutionally, these arguments should remove themselves from politics and enter the legal system.

So if someone believes that they can prove in a court of law that the President was responsible for the planning of that he otherwise took part in these riots to the degree that he can be held accountable for what happened...

Then so be it. But I wouldn't want to be that prosecutor, when all that the impeachers seem to have is mile high of piled up indignity and political rhetoric.

In a court of law, you need more than an implicit belief that the President "meant" something other than what he actually said.

And Scott just changes the subject.
_______

Well, unlike you, Scott, a lot of Republicans are upset because

1)Trump's remarks to the crowd before the invasion of the Capitol building WHEN TAKEN IN THEIR ENTIREITY ARE both incendiary and encouraging of violence--

and, unlike you, they are upset because

2) When the President saw the violence unfolding on TV, he was at first delighted and could not understand why his advisers were becoming upset by it--

and, unlike you, they are upset because

3) Trump never once called for a cessation of those violent acts until later when he began to realize the harm it all was doing him--

If all that does not seem impeachable to you, I am glad it is in the hands of others to determine whether it is grounds not only for impeachment (which has happened) but for conviction (which should happen).

only for the purposes of impeachment, not for criminal prosecution.

the bar for impeachment is set laughably low. and this impeachment being a "snap" impeachment without discovery, testimony or a defense, even more laughably low.

constitutional scholars such as Turley and Dershowitz are on the record as not being able to find one word, NOT ONE WORD, of Trump's Jan 6 speech that was in any way an incitement to violence, riot or insurrection.

so enjoy your childish impeachment. one that will lack a conviction and has only served to prove what assholes democrats are. as if we needed the reminder.

always remember that your candidate had to cheat to win. and that will always hang over Slow Joe's presidency like a stale and rancid fart.

If it was a criminal trial, I think that 12 imparchal jurors would vote to convict.

His speech was an impeachable offense.

I don't think that enough Republicans would vote to convict.

Biden may speak out today so we will see

C.H. Truth said...

Amazing that the Reverend doesn't actually post the actual remarks from the President that would be legally defined as incitement... but I can provide QUOTES from the President asking the protesters to be peaceful.

In fact, nearly ever legal scholar has pointed out that not only did the President legally NOT incite anything. The protest/riot itself cannot be under any legal definition be considered an insurrection.

Unless (as Scott Adams points out) one believes that taking Nancy Pelosi's podium would otherwise make that person Speaker of the House.

And let's be clear... again.

In six days the President is a private citizen. The idea of using impeachment to remove him from office would otherwise be deemed unconstitutional if not for the fact that the Senate will find him (again) to be "not guilty" of the non-criminal crime.

Well Scott, just go through his 80 minute speech and pick out those parts that don't seem to say what you want him to say, rather than those that do say what you want him to say. I will do that for you, but first:

POOR TRUMP.
NOBODY WILL DEFEND HIM EXCEPT YOU CHTRUTHER DUMMIES:

Trump Struggles to Find Lawyers for Impeachment Trial
2:26 pm
“President Trump, on the eve of facing a historic second impeachment trial for inciting the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last week, is having trouble finding a legal team to defend him,” Bloomberg reports.

“Allies of the outgoing president have been canvassing Washington’s legal landscape looking for representation but so far are coming up short. Lawyers who defended him in the previous impeachment trial, including Jay Sekulow and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, have said no this time.

“Other lawyers who have defended Trump at times, including former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, Eric Herschmann, Pat Philbin and Marc Kasowitz aren’t interested in joining a team this time, the people said. Some of the lawyers who don’t want a role HAVE PRIVATELY SAID WHAT TRUMP DID WAS INDEFENSIBLE.
________

Oh how can they SAY that? Scott has told us what Trump did is EMMINENTLY defensible!

Scott says so. So does Trump.

________

Oh, and by the way, Scott, notice that Trump DOES seem to think that some sort of an impeachment trial really IS going to take place, sometime, somewhere.

Do you guess his lawyers (the few that he still has left) are telling him THAT much? Do you suppose someone knows more than you do?
