Dark Winter: U.S. Consumer Sentiment Plummets to Six-Month Low
According to a new reading on sentiment, American consumers are still feeling quite bleak about the country’s economic future.
The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index indicates that sentiment is at a six-month low of 76.8 from a reading of 79 just last month.
The index, however, did post a slight tick up in the final weeks of February to 76.8 from 76.2 earlier in the month.
Nonetheless, the reading is significantly lower than the level of 101 reached on the index just one year ago in 2020. This was before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. has pinpointed an assailant in its investigation into the death of Brian D. Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer who was injured while fending off the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol last month and later died, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the inquiry.
The F.B.I. opened a homicide investigation into Officer Sicknick’s death soon after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Investigators initially struggled to determine what had happened as he fought assailants. They soon began to suspect his death was related to an irritant, like mace or bear spray, that he had inhaled during the riot. Both officers and rioters were armed with such irritants during the attack.
In a significant breakthrough in the case, investigators have now pinpointed a person seen on video of the riot who attacked several officers with bear spray, including Officer Sicknick, according to the officials. And video evidence shows that the assailant discussed attacking officers with the bear spray beforehand, one of the officials said.
While investigators narrowed potential suspects seen in video footage to a single person this week, they have yet to identify the assailant by name.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
Given the evidence available to investigators, prosecutors could be more likely to bring charges of assaulting an officer, rather than murder, in the case. But the death of Officer Sicknick, a 42-year-old Air National Guard veteran who served in Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan, could increase the penalties that prosecutors could seek if they took such a case to court.

On Jan. 7, when Officer Sicknick died, the Capitol Police issued a statement that said he “was injured while physically engaging with protesters,” and then “returned to his division office and collapsed.” He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

But missing from the program was any reassessment of Trump’s defeat and any role he played in the loss the GOP’s majority in the Senate in two subsequent runoff elections in Georgia.
The gathering is unfolding as a celebration of Trump’s stewardship of the GOP. The Republicans who actually won reelection last fall, and still wield power on Capitol Hill, are being cast as the problem impeding the party’s progress.
“The Republican Party is being reborn thanks to President Trump,” Kimberly Guilfoyle, girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr. and finance chairwoman of the Trump 2020 campaign, told the crowd. “We bid a farewell to the weak-kneed, the spineless, and the cowards that are posing in D.C. and pretending that they’re working for the people.”

This is misleading. A spokeswoman for Mr. McCarthy said that the 9 percent referred to the $160 billion for a national vaccination program, expanded testing and a public health jobs program, as outlined by the Biden administration. In other words, 8.4 percent, or $160 billion of the $1.9 trillion package, is allocated specifically to fighting the coronavirus.
But that is a rather narrow interpretation of pandemic-related funding. The bill also includes other health care spending like subsidizing insurance coverage for laid-off workers, extending paid sick leave and funding for veterans care.
And like the first two relief bills signed by President Donald J. Trump and an alternate measure proposed this year by 10 Republican lawmakers, much of the Biden plan is devoted to providing financial help to families and businesses harmed by the economic effects of the pandemic. The $1,400 stimulus checks and extension of unemployment benefits are the two biggest single expenditures.

Prominent Republicans who addressed conservative activists Friday at CPAC acknowledged as much, delivering a series of stirring calls to action to oppose the Democratic agenda in Washington, D.C. But missing from the program was any reassessment of Trump’s defeat and any role he played in the loss the GOP’s majority in the Senate in two subsequent runoff elections in Georgia.
The gathering is unfolding as a celebration of Trump’s stewardship of the GOP. The Republicans who actually won reelection last fall, and still wield power on Capitol Hill, are being cast as the problem impeding the party’s progress.
“The Republican Party is being reborn thanks to President Trump,” Kimberly Guilfoyle, girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr. and finance chairwoman of the Trump 2020 campaign, told the crowd. “We bid a farewell to the weak-kneed, the spineless, and the cowards that are posing in D.C. and pretending that they’re working for the people.”
“The best is yet to come,” Guilfoyle added, punctuating her remarks with a line from her August speech to the Republican convention that renominated the now-former president.
