1.4 unemployed vs 900K out of poverty?

CBO: Minimum wage boost would increase deficit, cost jobs
A Democratic plan to more than double the federal minimum wage over five years would increase federal deficits by $54 billion over a decade, the Congressional Budget Office said Monday.
Offering an updated and more detailed estimate than its 2019 assessment of similar legislation, the nonpartisan budget agency said the wage boost would lift about 900,000 workers out of poverty but make another 1.4 million workers jobless. And about 27 million workers overall would get a pay boost.

As someone with two school aged children still working food service / retail type jobs, I can assure you that raising the minimum wage in most of these cases will simply push these employers to cut corners, cut hours, and ultimately cut employees. While it might be nice for some of these employees to earn the same amount of money to work less hours, it's unlikely that the bulk of them will see more money.

As someone who managed retail for years, I can tell you that the payroll budget is going to be tracking your monetary cost, not the number of hours worked. You are provided a payroll budget of X amount of dollars, not a payroll budget of X amount of hours. If you have to give everyone a raise, it will only cause you to schedule out people for less hours or to let people go in order to provide the same amount of hours to your core employees.

So the CBO might be giving a reasonable assessment based on the pure numbers. But with well over 30 million people living in poverty, something that only improves that number marginally while costing jobs might not make the most economic sense.  An economic plan that looks to naturally expand our economy and make businesses more profitable (so they can afford to increase pay and keep hours) would seem to make more sense. But that requires certain political concessions that many are not willing to make.

I would like to personally thank Slow Joe an da Ho for being so galactically fucking ignorant on the most fundamental tenets of economics.

this is like a two-fer.

not only do us in tech get an uptick in sales when clients automate and kill human jobs, we get to sit back and watch those who were LIED TO come to the realization that this drooling imbecile of a dementia patient they voted for put them on the unemployment line.

that's worth a good BWAAAAAAAA!!!

Americans More Pessimistic About Economic Future

Monday, February 08, 2021

More Americans are pessimistic about the future of the U.S. economy, and a majority don’t think today’s children will be better off than their parents.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 41% of American Adults say the U.S. economy will be weaker a year from now. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say the economy will be stronger in a year, and 13% expect it to be about the same.

Whoever that is.

The FBI has been on his trail for a year and a half. Very elusive.

Bozos rejected the idea of mail in ballots for unionizing.

something about mail in ballots being ripe for fraud or something.

interesting concept. someone should take a closer look at that someday.

The Impeachment Trial Is Over

Playbook: “If the compelling presentations of the managers — and shoddy work by Trump’s – weren’t enough to move the GOP senators Tuesday, it’s not going to happen.”

COMPARE THIS
Louisiana GOP Rebukes Bill Cassidy
6:23 am
The Louisiana Republican party quickly rebuked Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), saying it is “profoundly disappointed” he backed the the constitutionality of Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

From a statement: “We feel that an impeachment trial of a private citizen is not only an unconstitutional act, but also an attack on the very foundation of American democracy.”

Playbook: “It’s not easy for any Republican to cross Trump, let alone one from a deep-red Southern state. Cassidy shocked the chamber — and his constituents — when he did just that, joining five other Senate Republicans to say the proceedings were in fact constitutional.”

TO THIS
Why Thousands of Republicans Are Leaving the Party
6:07 am
“In the days after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the phone lines and websites of local election officials across the country were jumping: Tens of thousands of Republicans were calling or logging on to switch their party affiliations,” the New York Times reports.

“An analysis of January voting records by The New York Times found that nearly 140,000 Republicans had quit the party in 25 states that had readily available data (19 states do not have registration by party). Voting experts said the data indicated a stronger-than-usual flight from a political party after a presidential election, as well as the potential start of a damaging period for G.O.P. registrations as voters recoil from the Capitol violence and its fallout.”

Inside the GOP’s Plan to Take Back the House
6:05 am
“House Republicans surprised nearly everyone last November when they almost captured the majority,” Politico reports.

“Then they spent January roiled by the deadly attack on the Capitol, confronting a second impeachment of then-President Donald Trump and answering for a whirlwind of offensive conspiracy theories from a firebrand freshman GOP congresswoman.

“But the National Republican Congressional Committee has landed on a plan to regain the momentum with which it ended 2020: Ignore all that.”

WE WON'T LET YOU.

Democrats Eye Big Obamacare Changes
7:12 am
“Democrats’ coronavirus relief proposal includes major changes to the Affordable Care Act, aiming to make health insurance more affordable for the millions of people who have lost their employer-based coverage during the pandemic,” Axios reports.

“These changes would check off a whole lot of moderate Democrats’ heath care agenda, at least temporarily. They include some of the biggest changes that President Biden campaigned on.”

States Face Wave of Voter Suppression Proposals
7:10 am
“There are at least 165 proposals under consideration in 33 states so far this year to restrict future voting access by limiting mail-in ballots, implementing new voter ID requirements and slashing registration options,” Axios reports.

WE DON'T WANT N*****S and HISPANICS VOTING, SAYS GOP.

CONTRADICTING THE ABOVE
GOP Eyes a Working-Class Future
7:08 am
“Republicans, long reliant on big business and the rich, see a post-Trump future centered on working class white, Hispanic and Black voters,” Axios reports.

“This is a substantial shift, born of necessity and the post-Trump reality. It would push Republicans further away from the interests of corporate America and traditional conservative ideas like entitlement reform.”

Also key: A new YouGov poll finds Republican voters no longer coalesce around tax cuts and entitlement reforms.

This decline, along with a slight increase in the Democratic Party’s positive ratings,

Trump Will Never Be Allowed Back on Twitter
11:25 am
Twitter CFO Ned Segal was asked on CNBC whether Donald Trump could ever turn to the platform in the scenario that he returns to the White House in four years.

The answer was an unequivocal no: “The way our policies work—when you’re removed from the platform, you’re removed from the platform.”

Prosecutors Open Criminal Probe Into Trump Call
11:15 am
“An Atlanta-area prosecutor has opened a criminal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election result in Georgia in the wake of two calls then-President Donald Trump placed to state officials, urging them to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the state,” the Washington Post reports.

New York Times:
“The inquiry makes Georgia the second state after New York where Mr. Trump faces a criminal investigation. And it comes in a jurisdiction where potential jurors are unlikely to be hospitable to the former president; Fulton County encompasses most of Atlanta and overwhelmingly supported President Biden in the November election.”

Of course, Trump will try to say that makes them incapable of determining whether the election was fair; only Trump supporters, they claim, can determine that.
