In one speech, former Senate Leader McConnell managed to unite liberals and Trump supporters everywhere. Both sides believe that Mitch McConnell played them for fools, but for entirely different reasons. The real reality here is that Mitch McConnell turned out to be the fool.
On one hand liberals are fuming at McConnell for the hypocrisy of "delaying" the impeachment trial till after the President left office, and then voting against impeachment because the President was not still in office. While the logistics of getting the trial done by the time Trump's term ended would have been a nightmare and the underlying intent of impeaching a lame duck President remains a problem, McConnell clearly provide that fodder to liberals. To some degree it looks like classic political gamesmanship from the ultimate political creature. I can certainly understand their frustration.
On the other hand, Trump fans are fuming that he undercut his own vote by basically declaring Trump guilty of something. McConnell even seemed to suggest that Trump could be charged as a private citizen, something that pretty much every legal expert with even a shadow of objectivity has said would be impossible. McConnell was censored previously (by the Kentucky GOP) for making similar anti-Trump statements back in mid January. They called an emergency meeting and the censor was unanimous. Obviously McConnell appears to be turning his back on his own constituents and his own voters by providing a repeat performance of his attack on Trump.
I have real questions as to whether or not McConnell "does" actually believe what he says? Does he seriously believe that the Trump era Congressional threshold of impeachment is now guiding the US Justice system? Does he seriously believe that the House case could be brought to a real court and carry the day? Has he become as hypocritical as the Democrats in terms of which support of which riots is perfectly acceptable and which are not? He seems to suggest as much on all counts, meaning he has clearly lost his grasp on this situation. Is this because (as the ultimate political creature of tradition) he is clouded by his issues with everything "Trump" and what it represents? Or perhaps he is too personally invested for being the target in this particular riot that his own mind has been taken over by self absorption?
Either way, McConnell has come out of this as damaged goods. The Democrats in the Senate are going to hold a grudge about this (along with everything else) and will likely not have much trust for him. The lion's share of Republicans will no longer look to follow him. Without support from either side, his time as leader might be coming to an end.
The real question looms is why? McConnell accomplished much as Senate Majority leader under Trump. He became universally loathed by the left for his uncanny ability to play the system to get things accomplished for his Party. The reworking of the USSC and the court system as a whole was probably 80% McConnell and 20% Trump (as much as Trump gets the credit). In many ways Trump was a useful tool for McConnell. McConnell will learn quickly that the all or nothing game that Democrats are playing will leave him (and his Party) completely out of the loop. At this point McConnell seems to think (or at least behave as if he thinks) differently.

The first of this century’s national traumas is denoted by two numbers: 9/11. One purpose of, and a sufficient justification for, the second impeachment of the 45th president was to inscribe this century’s second trauma in the nation’s memory as: 1/6..
Scott, if people like you continue to support Donald Trump, the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln will join the Whigs, and fade away.
McConnell offered a path forward without Trump.
The Trump party will not win back the house, or Senate and Presidency, because they are only about 37% of the voting public.
It was enough in 2016. But since then they lost the house and the Senate and the White House.
Hey alky, you can ALREADY say 1/6 and nobody knows what the hell you are talking about and you would have to explain it.

The Utah GOP must repudiate Romney and in the strongest terms. This guy is a menace. It’s one thing to put up with Collins who has a blue state constituency to answer to. It’s another to put up with an insufferable ass like Romney in a red state.
And Mitch doesn't represent his state either.
Not having him in a leadership role would have greatly helped Trump in 2020.

McConnell, won't follow the same path as he did in 2009 and blocked everything, in order to keep President Obama from getting reelected.
Because he spent decades working with! Joe Biden. He will negotiate with him, based upon conservative principles not Trumpism.
Even if it helps Biden and the Democrats.

The first of this century’s national traumas is denoted by two numbers: 9/11. One purpose of, and a sufficient justification for, the second impeachment of the 45th president was to inscribe this century’s second trauma in the nation’s memory as: 1/6.
Although not nearly as tragic as 9/11 in lives lost and radiating policy consequences, 1/6 should become, as its implications percolate into the national consciousness, even more unsettling. Long before 9/11, Americans knew that foreign fanaticisms were perennial dangers. After 1/6, Americans know what their Constitution’s Framers knew: In any democracy, domestic fanaticisms always are, potentially, rank weeds that flourish when fertilized by persons who are as unscrupulous as they are prominent.
The Framers are, to the 45th president, mere rumors. They, however, knew him, as a type — a practitioner of what Alexander Hamilton (in Federalist 68) disdainfully called “talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity.” Post-1/6 America has a quickened appreciation of how those “little arts,” when magnified by modern modes of mass communication as wielded by occupants of the swollen modern presidency, make civilization’s brittle crust crumble.
Intelligent people of goodwill disagree about the constitutionality of an impeachment trial of a former president. Forty-four Republican senators voted (generally less from constitutional conviction than from political convenience) to truncate the trial. They lost, but their role as jurors remained. In that constitutional role their duty was to decide whether the president’s two months of inciting what occurred on 1/6 constituted an impeachable offense. Saturday’s revelations about Donald Trump’s comportment during the riot — redundant evidence of his character, surprising to no senator — were no match for 100 senators’ unifying desire to spend a week away from the Senate.
The presentation by the House impeachment managers was a demonstration, the more welcome for its rarity, of congressional conscientiousness and meticulousness. Congress is an investigating institution, for three purposes: To establish the need for particular legislation. To provide oversight of the operation of existing laws and the institutions they undergird. And to inform voters about matters that they must understand in order for representative government to function. The investigative aspect of impeachment proceedings serves this third purpose.

The first amendment protects these platforms. I suspect that the truthers will get their talking points from neo Nazi's.
After President Donald Trump and some of his far-right allies were banned from social media platforms, fringe users are seeking private places to gather away from the scrutiny of content moderation.
Messages in groups on platforms like Telegram show far-right extremists hoping for additional violence ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. Extremists finding more private places to gather on the internet may help lessen their spread, but with less scrutiny, their words may carry more weight.

ring of recent attacks on elderly Asian Americans has led to an uproar in the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Why it matters: Violence and discrimination against Asian Americans appears to have risen dramatically since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving families nervous and afraid even in many of America’s most diverse cities.
Driving the news: Just within the past two weeks, a 61-year-old Filipino man was slashed across the face in New York City; an 84-year-old Thai immigrant died after he was slammed into the ground in Daly City, California; and a 91-year-old man was shoved to the ground in Oakland, California's Chinatown.
The coronavirus appears to have triggered a spike in anti-AAPI violence, and experts say former President Trump’s rhetoric — referring to COVID-19 as the “China virus” — only made matters worse.

I just read your thread article, Scott, and am genuinely amazed that you seem so incapable of seeing what seems so obvious:
Mitch McConnell is desperately trying to signal to the GOP that they have GOT to divest themselves from Trump (something they have already had ample good reasons to do but have not done) or face disaster as a party.
If they continue to allow elements in their fanatic fringe to decide their future, they will have no future, and McConnell knows it.
Your own guilty conscience is keeping you from admitting that you yourself have been complicit in enabling a despicable, unprincipled would-be tyrant to ensconce himself in power, and he must be renounced so that the Republican party can return to being a party that at least TRIES to rely on a genuine principle enshrined in the essence of our Constitution, that government should democratically be of, by, and for the majority of the people, and not of, by, and for the special interests of the wealthy.

Why Biden Will Keep Using Trump as a Foil
11:54 am by Taegan Goddard quoting Politico.
POLITICO: “Biden and his aides will continue to use Trump as a foil for the ‘foreseeable future’ as they seek to contrast the two presidents’ policies to build support for the White House’s agenda.
“Biden’s team learned a lesson from 2009, when President Barack Obama and Biden, then vice president, came to believe that they’d failed to defend their policies forcefully enough against criticisms from Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney. Those criticisms, they believe, contributed to Democrats’ enormous losses in the 2010 midterm elections.”
Trump [still] Towers Over Republicans
11:45 am by Taegan Goddard quoting Playbook.
PLAYBOOK: “Forty-three Senate Republicans voted to acquit Trump, but few defended him when they announced their votes. Instead, they cited process arguments and said impeaching an ex-president is unconstitutional, which even many conservative attorneys dispute. In short, GOP senators passed up an opportunity to put Trump away for good because their base still loves him — and they fear the base. Will they regret this in a few months or years?”
ANSWER: MITCH SURE THINKS THEY WILL, AND IS ACTING ON IT.
Extra Bonus Quote of the Day
11:42 am By Taegan Goddard quoting Raskin:
“It could be First Amendment, it could be bill of attainder, it could be due process. I mean all of them are nonsense. I thought that I successfully demolished them at the trial but, you know, there’s no reasoning with people who basically are, you know, acting like members of a religious cult and when they leave office should be selling flowers at Dulles Airport.”
— Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), lead impeachment manager, in an interview on Meet the Press.
Coons Blames McConnell for Trump Acquittal
11:39 am by Taegan Goddard quoting Coons:
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) blamed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on ABC News for former President Trump’s acquittal in his second Senate impeachment trial.
Said Coons: “Once Mitch McConnell made it clear he intended to acquit, even despite the compelling evidence, what the House managers needed wasn’t more witnesses or more evidence, what we all needed was more Republican courage.”
He added: “I’m fairly certain there would have been a vote to convict with a secret ballot.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

Raskin Says Trump Guilty In Court of Public Opinion
11:20 am by Taegan Goddard quoting Rep. Raskin.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) criticized Republicans like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for “trying to have it both ways” by voting to acquit former President Donald Trump on charges he incited last month’s attack on the Capitol, arguing that history will deem the president responsible nonetheless, NBC News reports.
Said Raskin: “We successfully prosecuted him and convicted him in the court of public opinion and the court of history.”
He added: “He’s obviously a major political problem for the Republican Party, and as long as he’s out there attempting to wage war on American constitutional democracy, he’s a problem for all of us.”
MY PREDICTION: HE WILL BE LESS AND LESS AND LESS OF A PROBLEM FROM NOW ON. MITCH McCONNELL IS RISKING ALL ON THAT.
James , you know you are boring AF.
The fact that the radicalization that has driven a sizable share of the Republican Party to the right during the last 12 years has been a bottom-up phenomenon.
Republican elected officials, especially Trump, and right-wing media have spread conspiracy theories and some have helped normalize violence, but those developments have been demand-driven: Trump didn’t create the set of beliefs and attitudes now widely referred to as Trumpism, but he sensed their presence in the Republican electorate and positioned himself to capitalize.
The problem that Republicans continue to grapple with is that those same attitudes have driven away voters whose support they need, especially in swing states and competitive congressional districts. The loss of two Senate seats in Georgia’s runoff elections early last month, which reduced McConnell to his new role as minority leader, came about in part because of politically moderate voters turning against the GOP in suburban areas of the state.
Like most political figures most of the time, Senate Republicans want to avoid political risk. The impeachment case, however, highlighted how inescapable the risks have become for them, regardless of which way they turn.
House impeachment managers, as they presented their case over the last several days, tried to highlight the risk of not acting, as the lead House impeachment manager, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), did on Thursday.
“Is there any political leader in this room who believes that if he is ever allowed by the Senate to get back into the Oval Office, Donald Trump would stop inciting violence to get his way?” Raskin asked.
“Would you bet the lives of more police officers on that? Would you bet the safety of your family on that? Would you bet the future of your democracy on that?”
Unwilling to face down their Trump-backing constituents, the majority of Republican senators signaled by their votes that Raskin’s bet is one they were willing to take. But the outcome left them no closer to healing a divide that continues to threaten their party.

Graham Says McConnell Speech Could Haunt GOP
2:07 pm by Taggan Goddard quoting Lindsey Graham.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Sunday he thought Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s speech blasting former President Donald Trump would be used against Republicans in campaign ads in 2022 when the party fights to reclaim the Senate, USA Today reports.
Said Graham:
“He got a load off his chest, obviously, but unfortunately he put a load on the back of Republicans. That speech you will see in 2022 campaigns.”

McConnell tried to rescue the Republican party. About 80% of Republicans believe that the election was stolen. He said that was a lie. The biggest donors will not support the party you want. Biden rose a lot more money. That was a reversal.
That 80% represents about 37% of the voters. When Trump won by a minority, who got him elected.
The 2020 election showed a big fault in the Republican base. They voted for Biden in a significant percentage. The female suburban voters will not vote for a Trumpian candidate, even in Trump doesn't run.
If Biden succeeds with the covid-19 pandemic crisis, and the economy returns to the same level, prior to the pandemic, he will win a landslide, again.

Trump Looks to Reassert Himself
4:26 pm
Associated Press:
“Now acquitted in his second Senate impeachment trial, Trump is preparing for the next phase of his post-presidency life. Feeling emboldened by the trial’s outcome, he is expected to reemerge from a self-imposed hibernation at his club in Palm Beach, Florida, and is eyeing ways to reassert his power.
“But after being barred from Twitter,
the former president lacks the social media bullhorn that fueled his political rise.
And he’s confronting a Republican Party deeply divided over the legacy of his jarring final days in office,
culminating in the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol.
Searing video images of the day played on loop during his impeachment trial, which ended Saturday.”

Yep. He'll have a hard time overcoming all that. And especially that shouting conversation with McCarthy. :-)
GOP Grapples with Future After Trump
(THAT IS, IF THERE IS A FUTURE FOR THAT PARTY.)
4:15 pm EST Taegan Goddard quotes the LA Times.
“The dramatic shift in tone from Senate Republicans between two impeachment trials of former President Trump, just a year apart, reveals a party that has grown weary of defending its leader but lacks the fortitude to sever ties, with GOP lawmakers openly grappling this weekend with the difficult question of how to move forward after such a divisive trial,” the Los Angeles Times reports.
YES, THAT IS GOING TO BE JUST A LEEETLE DIFFICULT, ISN'T IT?
“In the wake of Trump’s acquittal Saturday, Republicans are divided on the power Trump will — and should — command in the Republican Party, including in the 2024 presidential election.
Seven Republicans voted for conviction, a number so large that the vote will go down as the most bipartisan presidential guilty tally in American history;
even so, the GOP votes represented just 14% of the Senate conference.”

First Orbital's, and later Northrop's desire to grab a piece of the lucrative market for launching large satellites into orbit was certainly understandable -- especially with billions of dollars worth of new Pentagon launch contracts coming up. But the truth was that, between United Launch Alliance's Atlas V, Delta IV, and upcoming Vulcan Centaur rockets, SpaceX's Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and envisioned Starship, Blue Origin's planned New Glenn, and the multiple heavy lift rockets being operated abroad by Ariane, by Roscosmos, and by China -- the world was simply awash in big rockets."

Great week.
Trump beats impeachment. Dems in disarray. The Lincoln Project burnt to the ground. The RINOS in the GOP establishment exposed & collapsing. Cuomo & Dem Govs in free fall. The media depressed and lashing out at Dems for their impeachment fail.

The @nytimes just retracted its January 8 report that claimed Brian Sicknick was killed by a Trump supporter using a fire extinguisher. Not only is the original story untrue, they lied about the anonymous sources linked to the story. My update here
The New York Times lied. And their "anonymous" sources lied.
Were they trying to qualify as future Trump impeachment managers?
Or trying to win more Pulitzers like they received for other major lies like with the Russian collusion HOAX ?
does look like the are extremely qualified as "enemy of the people"
And what do you call liars who designate themselves scorekeepers for lies which they consider is anything that goes against what they are "reporting" ?
ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE
at least there are a few good reporters left.
Can't trust anyone named "anonymous"
They are VERY lo iq

What upsets you about McConnell's statement, Scott, is the fact that he is being honest, and you are not. Your words to the effect that McConnell has damaged himself with both Republicans and Democrats show that with you it has all become mere political calculation, not a search for the truth. The truth, McConnell admits (in spite of his weak technical argument against impeaching and convicting a President who is no longer in office) is that Trump is guilty as hell and can still be held accountable in the courts, as a private, unprotected citizen.
Not that McConnell is not being his usual calculating self. It is just that he has become aware that Trump is such damaged goods, his out and out lying so obvious, that if the GOP continues to saddle itself with having to defend what is not defendable, it will sink itself.
At least he has the honesty to see and admit that. You don't.
