BIDEN IS POLLING VERY WELL ON COVID,
AND LOOK AT THIS:

Can U.S. Economy Break from YEARS of Subpar Growth?
(Goddard quotes WaPo:

“As increasingly widespread covid-19 vaccinations signal a possible return to normal life, the United States is moving toward an unusual experiment that could produce an economy many Americans will not recognize — for better or for worse,” the Washington Post reports.

“Factories are humming and consumers are spending again, signs that the United States could emerge from the current health crisis with its strongest growth in decades. Goldman Sachs expects the economy to expand this year at an annual rate of 7 percent, the fastest pace since President Ronald Reagan proclaimed ‘morning again in America’ in 1984.

“The question is whether that fast-paced rebound can be made to last, freeing the nation from the low-growth rut it has plowed for most of the past 20 years, or will instead ignite the sort of inflation that has not been seen since the 1970s.”
______

Biden has competent financial experts who will try to keep that last from happening, and he will listen to them.

Did you ever see the former do anything like this with his grandchildren? He was too busy playing golf!

As it turns out, Joe Biden might be the first gamer President in the history of the United States. Spotted in a social media post recently, the recently sworn-in Commander-in-chief was found spending some of his free time by playing a round of Mario Kart against his granddaughter. And despite not growing up with the game himself, it seems that Biden’s racing skills aren’t too shabby.

The moment was shared on Instagram by Naomi Biden, who is Joe’s granddaughter. While at Camp David, which is the well-known retreat that the sitting President of the United States and his family often attend, Naomi and Joe found themselves at the wheel racing against each other. The iteration of the popular video game that they competed in wasn’t on a Nintendo console, but it was instead the arcade iteration known as Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

Fact check on both sides.

To be sure, the vaccine rollout was slower than expected at the beginning. Although then-President Donald Trump had promised to vaccinate 20 million Americans by the end of 2020, the total at year’s end was just 5.4 million !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But the number of doses administered continued to trend upward during the final weeks of the Trump presidency. On Jan. 7, a little more than a million doses were administered, and the seven-day average was up to 542,000, according to the CDC. By Jan. 14, the seven-day average was up to 918,000 doses per day.

Despite the upward trend, an article in USA Today on Jan. 14 continued to call Biden’s 100-shots-in-100-days promise “a lofty goal to reverse a slow start to the nation’s vaccine rollout.”

That same day, Michael Osterholm, a member of Biden’s COVID-19 task force, called Biden’s goal “aspirational … but doable’’ and warned that the “first days of that 100 days may be substantially slower than it will be towards the end.”

“It’s not going to occur quickly … you’re going to see the ramp-up occurring only when the resources really begin to flow,” Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told STAT news.

But by that time, the average number of daily doses was already nearing the 1 million shots a day threshold needed to meet Biden’s promise. And by Jan. 20, the day of Biden’s inauguration — a day that saw nearly 1.5 million vaccines administered — the seven-day average was about 966,000.

The following day, Jan. 21, another roughly 1.5 million doses were administered, bringing the seven-day average to over 1 million per day. After Biden gave a speech on the COVID-19 response, a reporter asked if — given the pace of vaccination he inherited — Biden shouldn’t have set his bar higher.

“When I announced it, you all said, ‘It’s not possible.’ Come on, give me a break man,” Biden responded.

At a press briefing later that day, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was also asked why Biden wasn’t “shooting just a little bit higher.”

“Well, none of us are mathematicians, myself included, so I asked our team to do a little math on this,” Psaki responded. “So, the Trump administration was given 36 million doses when they were in office for 38 days. They administered a total of about 17 million shots.  That’s about less than 500,000 shots a day. What we’re proposing is to double that to about 1 million shots per day. And we have outlined this goal and objective in coordination and consultation with our health and medical experts. So it is ambitious. It’s something that we feel is bold and was called that certainly at the time, and we’re working overtime to help to achieve it — try to achieve it.”

Psaki’s math is roughly accurate, but again, it misleadingly ignores the trend line, and the fact that the U.S. had virtually reached the 1 million doses per day average in the week before Biden took office.

COVID death toll up 25% during Biden's first month in office

As a presidential candidate, Joe Biden took a swaggering tone when asked about COVID-19 and said he would "shut down the virus" if elected.

However, during his first month in office, almost 100,000 Americans have died, according to new statistics from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Based on the center's numbers, as of Saturday, 99,763 U.S. residents had died since Biden took office.

The death toll stood at 397,611 when Biden entered the White House, according to Breitbart News, and hit 498,05 as of Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins.

Biden was long on plans and short on specifics when he toured a Pfizer plant Friday that produces coronavirus vaccine, according to a White House transcript of his comments

"I can’t give you a date when this crisis will end, but I can tell you we’re doing everything possible to have that day come sooner rather than later," he said at the plant, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"I believe we’re on the road, I promise you. I know we’ll run into bumps. It’s not going to be easy here to the end, but we’re going to beat this. We’re going to beat this,” he said.

When asked for specifics, Biden said that "I believe we’ll be approaching normalcy by the end of this year."

However, Biden hedged his bets.

"But I can’t make that commitment to you. There are other strains of the virus. We don’t know what could happen in terms of production rates. Things can change. But we’re doing everything the science has indicated we should do, and people are stepping up to get everything done that has to be done," he said.

Biden repeated his contention that many Americans are baffled by technology when it comes to signing up for the vaccine.

"A lot of people aren’t able to — a lot of people who need the help. They say, 'Well, get online.' Well, they don’t have a means to get online. They might not have, you know, the ability to get online, and they may not know how to do it," he said.

Although the Trump administration left office having ordered more than 200 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine, Biden repeated his line that he entered office starting from scratch.

If there's a civil war in the Republican Party, the voters who backed Donald Trump in November's election are ready to choose sides.

Behind Trump.

An exclusive Suffolk University/USA TODAY Poll finds Trump's support largely unshaken after his second impeachment trial in the Senate, this time on a charge of inciting an insurrection in the deadly assault on the Capitol Jan. 6.

By double digits, 46%-27%, those surveyed say they would abandon the GOP and join the Trump party if the former president decided to create one. The rest are undecided.

"We feel like Republicans don't fight enough for us, and we all see Donald Trump fighting for us as hard as he can, every single day," Brandon Keidl, 27, a Republican and small-business owner from Milwaukee, says in an interview after being polled. "But then you have establishment Republicans who just agree with establishment Democrats and everything, and they don't ever push back.

54% of Voters Say Biden Is a ‘Puppet’ of the Left

Less than a month after President Joe Biden’s inauguration, most voters believe the Democrat is “a puppet of the radical left” and not the moderate “nice guy” he was portrayed as being during the election campaign.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 54% of Likely U.S. Voters say they agree with this statement: “Joe Biden’s not the moderate nice guy that they made him out to be. He’s a puppet of the radical left.” Forty percent (40%) of voters disagree. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

RINO RINO RINO

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Sunday that he would not support a run by former President Donald Trump for reelection in 2024.

"He's got a good family ... and they love America," the Republican told host Dana Bash on CNN's "State of the Union." "But I would not support him for reelection in 2024."

"He's going to have a voice, as former presidents do, but there's many voices in our party," he went on. Trump "should not define our future."

Hutchinson said in January that he wanted the Trump administration to end, but stopped short of calling for the former president's resignation. He also called a second set of impeachment proceedings "unworkable."

The governor's nephew, an Arkansas state senator, has since announced he is leaving the Republican Party due to the direction the GOP has taken.

Hutchinson called on the GOP to pivot away from Trump's perspective and toward "a different voice for the future of our party."

"He will only define our party if we let him define our party," Hutchinson said Sunday. "I think it's fine for CPAC to invite former President Trump to speak, but how about the other voices? Senator [Bill] Cassidy from Louisiana, those that have different points of view."

"That's what we've got to embrace," he went on. Trump "has a loud megaphone, but we have to have many different voices, and in my view, we can't let him define us for the future because that would just further divide our country and it would hurt our Republican Party."

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican who retired at the end of 2020, echoed Hutchinson's sentiments on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"This is a president that lost the House, the Senate, the White House in four years," Hurd said. "I think the last person to do that was Herbert Hoover and that was in the Great Depression. And, you know, when you look at in the 2020 election, the number of Republicans that were successful significantly outperformed President Trump."

The former didn't get one million injections per day until the last week of his chaotic administration.

Another reason to destroy the Republican party.

Like many other Texans, Houston resident David Astrein and his wife did what they could to save power last week, even while both were working from home with a 5-month-old son.
Having conserved power after briefly losing it twice during rolling blackouts, Astrein, 36, said he was shocked when he logged on to view his electric bill from his provider, Griddy: $2,796.85 since Feb. 1.
Ahead of the storms, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages around 90 percent of the state’s electric load, underestimated how much power it would need. Because Texas is also the only state in the Lower 48 that operates an independent electric grid, it could not get help from neighboring states.

The countdown to the Biden success.

The Washington Post reports that the US economy could very well grow like gangbusters this year:

Factories are humming and consumers are spending again, signs that the United States could emerge from the current health crisis with its strongest growth in decades. Goldman Sachs expects the economy to expand this year at an annual rate of 7 percent, the fastest pace since President Ronald Reagan proclaimed “morning again in America” in 1984.

....Not for 75 years, since American G.I.s were battling two totalitarian empires, has the economy been boosted simultaneously by so much deficit spending and so much easy money. The economy will enjoy additional support this year from consumers, who have more than $1.6 trillion in excess savings, thanks in part to last year’s stimulus checks, according to Bank of America.

Scott asshole wants the economy to collapse, in order to get the former elected by aminority vote.

Yeah, something is indeed challenging about the math as Scott (aka Ch"trooth") represents it there.

How does Scott's math square with the fact that Trump promised 20 million vaccinations by the end of December 2020 but only a little more than 4 million got done?

Sort of difficult to square that, eh?, with Trump's promise of 20 million.

Scott, you need to do some 'splainin.
__________
MSNBC
After the promise to vaccinate 20 million Americans by the end of 2020, a little more than 4 million vaccines have been administered, largely to front-line health care workers and nursing home staff. The order of magnitude in this shortfall in vaccine distribution is characterized by inadequate leadership from the Trump administration, a lack of coordination among federal, state and local authorities, and inadequate communication.

These shortfalls include everything from prioritizing administrative staff ahead of medical residents caring for patients on the front lines to attempts by wealthy Americans to “skip the line.”

How did we end up here? The Trump administration’s lack of leadership, incoherent strategic planning and poor attention to detail have created foundational barriers to getting vaccines distributed at scale. The unfocused, patchwork approach President Donald Trump has helped foster means vaccine distribution has been functionally outsourced to individual states, creating significant discrepancies in who is prioritized for vaccine eligibility. This has also entailed major breaks from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.

How Security at the Capitol Fell Apart
Politicalwire.com
Taegan Goddard quotes The New York
Times
“At 1:09 p.m. on Jan. 6, minutes after protesters had burst through the barricades around the U.S. Capitol and began using the steel debris to assault the officers standing guard, the chief of the Capitol Police made a desperate call for backup. It took nearly two hours for officials to approve the deployment of the National Guard,” the New York Times reports.

“New details about what transpired over those 115 minutes on that dark, violent day — revealed in interviews and documents — tell a story of how chaotic decision-making among political and military leaders burned precious time as the rioting at the Capitol spiraled out of control.

“Communication breakdowns, inaction and confusion over who had authority to call for the National Guard delayed a deployment of hundreds of troops who might have helped quell the violence that raged for hours.”

TRUMP WAS STILL PRESIDENT UNELECT.

Ted Cruz Invited Friend to Join Him In Cancun
7:36 am EST Taegan Goddard quotes Axios

“In explaining his disastrous Cancún trip, Sen. Ted Cruz failed to mention his college roommate also was along for the visit,” Axios reports.

“Cruz invited David Panton, his longtime friend and former roommate at Princeton and Harvard Law, to join the family getaway.”

HuffPost notes Cruz’s already-flimsy excuse for jetting off to Cancun while his state suffered from one of its worst disasters continues to fall apart.

19,000 Pennsylvania Republicans Have Left GOP
Taegan Goddard quotes The Philadelphia Inquirer:
“About 19,000 Pennsylvanians have left the Republican Party since Jan 6. That’s a drop in the bucket for a state with more than 8.8 million registered voters, and almost 3.5 million Republicans. But it’s also an unusually high rate of defections: Almost two-thirds of the voters who have switched parties this year left the GOP, compared with a third or less typically.

“And there are signs of a broader political shift underway. These are often longtime party loyalists, highly engaged voters who cast Republican primary ballots in low-profile, off-year elections… They haven’t changed their political ideologies, they said in interviews. But they’re registering as third-party or independent voters because they believe that their political home, now led by Trump, has changed around them.

“That raises the prospect of a Republican primary electorate even friendlier to Trump and Trump-allied candidates — something that could have big implications for the party in competitive races for governor and U.S. Senate next year.”

THE GOP IS HEADED FOR DISASTER.
MITCH McCONNELL KNOWS IT.
EVERYBODY WITH ANY BRAINS KNOWS IT.
JUST LOOK AT THIS:

Trump to Claim Total Control of GOP
6:44 am Taegan Goddard quotes Axios:

“In his first post-presidential appearance, Donald Trump plans to send the message next weekend that he is Republicans’ ‘presumptive 2024 nominee’ with a vise grip on the party’s base,” Axios reports.

A longtime adviser called Trump’s speech a “show of force.”

Anger Grows at Texas Governor After Deadly Storm
6:36 am Taegan Goddard quotes The Washington Post:
“Critics have charged that the Abbott administration’s response to the storm has at times resembled the government failures after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005.

“The anger was palpable, with petitions circulating online demanding the resignations of Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).”

Trump Aide to Primary GOP Impeachment Supporter
Taegan Goddard quotes Politico:

“Former Trump White House aide Max Miller is expected to wage a primary challenge against GOP Rep. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, the latest opponent to take on a House Republican who supported the former president’s impeachment,” Politico reports.

“Miller, who hails from northeastern Ohio, has been in talks with top Republican donors in the state and other party leaders since leaving the White House last month.”

The count up of the Biden administration towards success

Shares of small companies are outpacing their larger counterparts by the widest margin in more than two decades. Behind their rise: confidence among investors that heavy stimulus and coronavirus vaccine deployment will boost the economy.

The Russell 2000 Index of small companies has climbed 15% and set 10 closing records so far this year, well above the S&P 500’s 4% rise. That is the largest such gap between the two indexes through Feb. 19 since 2000, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The leadership by small companies goes back even further. Over the past six months, they are beating the S&P 500 by nearly 30 percentage points as investors anticipate greater fiscal spending from the Biden administration.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a significant defeat for former President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to step in to halt the turnover of his tax records to a New York state prosecutor.

The court’s action is the apparent culmination of a lengthy legal battle that had already reached the high court once before.

Trump’s tax records are not supposed to become public as part of prosecutors' criminal investigation, but the high court’s action is a blow to Trump because he has long fought on so many fronts to keep his tax records shielded from view. The ongoing investigation the records are part of could also become an issue for Trump in his life after the presidency. Trump has called it “a fishing expedition” and “a continuation of the witch hunt — the greatest witch hunt in history.”

The Supreme Court waited months to act in the case. The last of the written briefs in the case was filed Oct. 19. But a court that includes three Trump appointees waited through the election, Trump’s challenge to his defeat and a month after Trump left office before issuing its order.

Fox News Is No Longer Foxy Enough For True Believers.

Author Kevin Drum

In the annals of schadenfreude, this has to rank high. It comes from a USA Today poll of Trump voters:

There are disquieting findings in the poll for Fox News, which has prospered as the dominant news source for conservatives. In a USA TODAY/Suffolk Poll in October 2016, 58% of Trump voters said Fox was their most trusted source of news. In the new poll, that drops to 34%.

Trust has risen in two relatively new outlets that have made their reputations by championing Trump. Newsmax is the most trusted among 17% of Trump voters, followed by 9% for One American News Network, or OANN.

Fox News spent all of November and December doing everything it could to convince its viewers that the election had been stolen. They promoted every dumb conspiracy theory, every hopeless lawsuit, and every utterance from the mouth of Rudy Giuliani. They made themselves the target of libel suits from voting machine companies. Tucker and Sean and Laura and the rest of the gang spent every evening explaining how Democrats were fraudulently stealing votes in every state Trump lost.

And what's their reward for all this? They've lost the trust of the true believers because the events of January 6 went a little too far even for them. It turns out that the audience conditioned by Fox News to always believe the worst of Democrats wants to keep hearing that even if Fox News itself is suggesting otherwise. So now 26% of Trump voters have dumped the Murdoch empire for the sin of being ever so slightly attached to the real world.

Trumpism will make the Republican party the next Whig.

In an interview with Reuters, Fauci on Monday said the pandemic arrived in the United States as the country was riven by political divisions in which wearing a mask became a political statement rather than a public health measure.

“Even under the best of circumstances, this would have been a very serious problem,” Fauci said, noting that despite strong adherence to public health measures, countries such as Germany and the UK struggled with the virus.

“However, that does not explain how a rich and sophisticated country can have the most percentage of deaths and be the hardest-hit country in the world,” said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a top adviser to President Joe Biden. “That I believe should not have happened.”

While the United States has just about 4% of the global population, it has recorded nearly 20% of all COVID-19 deaths.

CLARENCE THOMAS Promotes Trump’s BIG LIE About the Election
5:00 pm Taegan Goddard reports from Slate:

Justice Clarence Thomas issued a startling opinion in which he cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election by questioning the security of mail voting, Slate reports.

“Thomas drew heavily from a 2012 New York Times article focusing on Florida’s mail voting regime, which focused on a handful of fraudulent schemes involving mail ballots.
"The justice also pointed to a Republican operative’s criminal attempt to steal an election in North Carolina using mail ballots.

"In reality, this kind of voter fraud is vanishingly rare, and its few perpetrators have been caught and prosecuted.

“In a strikingly cynical move, the justice argued that laws curtailing mail voting may be justified without proof of fraud to prevent ‘the appearance of corruption.’

"He drew this standard from the campaign finance context, in which the court has upheld limits on political spending to bolster public confidence that lawmakers are not corrupt.”

As of Monday, according to The Post, 44.1 million Americans had received at least one shot of the two-shot vaccines. That represents more than one-third of the initially targeted population — medical personnel, those over 65, essential workers — and about 13 percent of the total U.S. population. We can and must do better. But according to figures compiled daily by the BBC, only Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Britain have vaccinated more of their citizens per capita than the United States.

In other words, we did much worse than other wealthy countries, and even some poor countries, in controlling the spread of the coronavirus and preventing serious illness and death. But we have done much better than most countries in getting vaccines into people’s arms.

The coronavirus variants are troubling, especially the one first identified in South Africa. It is possible that the virus could come roaring back as quickly as it has ebbed. This is a new disease, and anyone who tells you we fully understand it is lying.

But we now have serious, competent leadership that believes in science, not conspiracy theories. And whatever the reasons, the tragic covid-19 toll — still too high — has fallen dramatically from its horrific peak. We have lost an unimaginable 500,000 lives. But we can keep from losing 500,000 more.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Deaths are a lagging indicator, but those, too, have fallen sharply. On Saturday, the seven-day daily average of deaths was 1,932 — the first time that figure had fallen below 2,000 since Dec. 4.

FACEBOOK MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR JAN 6 THAN PARLER:

Rachel Bovard dug into the flood of Mainstream Media (MSM) reporting accusing Parler of being the social media of choice for organizers of the January 6 Capitol riot. Here’s what she found:

“Of the 223 charging documents, 73 reference posts on Facebook as evidence, 24 reference posts YouTube, 20 single out Instagram posts (owned by Facebook), and only eight highlight posts on Parler.

“Was Parler involved? Yes. Was the platform the virtual Bat Cave of Incitement and Violence that Apple, Google, Amazon, and thoroughly un-critical press reporting made it out to be? Hardly. If any single platform can be fingered as the favorite of the rioters, it appears to be Facebook.”

But we now have serious, competent leadership that believes in science...

yes. political science.

In other words, this is about politics, not safety.

How can I say that? Because, whether they realize it or not, they admitted as much.

See, these “Republican talking points” mentioned? They’re called “scientific studies,” but don’t take my word for it. This comes from that uber right-wing website The New York Times:

On Tuesday, federal health officials weighed in with a call for returning children to the nation’s classrooms as soon as possible, saying the “preponderance of available evidence” indicates that in-person instruction can be carried out safely as long as mask-wearing and social distancing are maintained.

Federal officials cited the many benefits of in-person schooling for children, and argued for prioritizing their educational, developmental and emotional and mental health needs. “Schools are an important source not just of education, but health and social services for children,” Dr. Honein said.

The call by Dr. Honein and other officials reflects a consensus among some leading educators and public health experts that schools should be the last to close and the first to open when shutdowns are necessary.

Yet AFT wants to call these “Republican talking points” simply because then they can dismiss them.

The kicker?

It seems there are a number of teachers who want to get back into the classroom. There are tons of students who want back in the classrooms. There are tons of parents who want them all to be back in the classrooms.

So who really doesn’t want to be in the classrooms? The American Federation of Teachers.

See, as it stands right now, Democrats don’t want to reopen anything if they can help it. For them, the economy going deeper and deeper into the toilet is a good thing. I don’t know for a fact they’re happy with that, but they have a lot to gain if the economy slumps another quarter or two.

At that point, they can pass a pile of legislation such as an increase in the minimum wage, then reopen the country. While the recovery wouldn’t be as grand as it could have been, there would still be something that looks like a recovery, and Democrats will pat themselves on the back.

But for that to work, everyone on the left has to be on the same page. That includes the unions. For AFT, that means fighting to keep out of the classrooms until the timing is right.

Then, we’ll see Democrat incumbents going on about how they reopened the economy, got our kids back in school, and have us on the road to recovery, all while pretending that they weren’t the ones screaming for everything to be locked down in the first place.

Who cares about studies that make it clear that we can safely reopen schools now? Who cares if those same studies show that teachers aren’t getting infected as long as a few sensible precautions are taken? Doesn’t matter because they’ll still demand the vaccine, knowing damn good and well that will further delay reopening schools, despite there being no real risk.

AFT doesn’t care about students. They never have. Their every move has been about increasing their own power.

Morning Across America!

Cohen Predicts Trump Will Go to Jail
Michael Cohen
told MSNBC that he thinks Donald Trump ought to start looking into getting a “custom made jumpsuit, because it does not look good for him.”

Cohen said he’s not sure what exactly the tax documents Trump must hand over to prosecutors may reveal, but was confident enough to claim “it does not look good for him.”

What’s Next for Trump Taxes Investigation
New York Times:
“Terabytes of data. Dozens of prosecutors, investigators and forensic accountants sifting through millions of pages of financial documents. An outside consulting firm drilling down on the arcana of commercial real estate and tax strategies.

“That is the monumental task that lies ahead in the Manhattan district attorney’s criminal investigation into former President Donald J. Trump and his family business after a United States Supreme Court order on Monday cleared the way for prosecutors to obtain eight years worth of Mr. Trump’s tax returns and other financial records.”

Biden Readies First Major Penalties on Russia
Politico:
“The U.S. is preparing to respond to Russia’s poisoning and jailing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and is expected to coordinate a sanctions rollout with European allies in the coming weeks."

Yellen Backs Higher Corporate Tax
Bloomberg:
“Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said President Joe Biden favors boosting taxes on companies, and signaled openness to considering raising rates on capital gains, while steering clear of a wealth levy.

“The administration is looking to boost the corporate tax to 28%, Yellen said. The Treasury chief said last week that revenue measures would be needed to help pay for Biden’s planned longer-term economic reconstruction program to help address concerns about debt sustainability.”

Hearing Begins Probe of Capitol Riot
Washington Post:
“The public inquest into the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol begins a new phase Tuesday when four law enforcement officials — three of whom resigned their posts and some of whom have never before spoken publicly about the attack — face lawmakers aiming to uncover what led to the violence and prevent future unrest.”

NBC News:
Key Capitol security officials to be grilled about what went wrong on January 6.

Biden’s Plan B for Budget Director
Axios:
“House Democratic leaders are quietly mounting a campaign for Shalanda Young, a longtime congressional aide, to replace Neera Tanden as nominee for director of the Office of Management and Budget.

“The nascent campaign for Young, who would be OMB’s first Black female leader, reflects a stark reality taking hold in the Democratic Party: Tanden’s prospects are rapidly fading.”

Drug Companies Pledge Massive Boost In Vaccines
The Washington Post:
“Drug companies planned to tell lawmakers Tuesday that they project a major increase in vaccine deliveries that will result in 140 million more doses over the next five weeks, saying they have solved manufacturing challenges and are in a position to overcome scarcity that has hampered the nation’s fight against the coronavirus.

GOP Attack on Biden Doesn’t Stick
Punchbowl News:
“So far, Republicans’ main push has been to try to label Biden a ‘radical.’ Biden’s foreign policy is ‘radical.’ Biden’s immigration policy is ‘radical.’ Biden’s climate change policy is ‘radical.’ Biden’s nominees are ‘radical.’ Biden’s Covid relief bill is a ‘payback to the radical left.’ Biden is the ‘most radical left wing president in history, period.’ Something, something, ‘Biden is radical.'

“The challenge for Republicans is that most Americans simply don’t see Biden that way. You may not like Biden, his policies or his demeanor, but the “radical” tag just hasn’t stuck. It didn’t work during the campaign, it hasn’t worked during his first month in office. Biden just doesn’t give off the radical vibe. There’s plenty to criticize Biden for, but yelling ‘radical’ at every turn isn’t going to work.”

Dominion files defamation lawsuit against MyPillow CEO over false claims voting machines were rigged against Trump
MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell speaks during a coronavirus briefing at the White House last March as President Donald Trump listens.

Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuit Monday against MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell, accusing him of seeking to boost pillow sales by promoting false claims that Dominion’s voting machines were manipulated to rig the 2020 election against President Donald Trump.
In interviews and other public appearances, the lawsuit says, Lindell repeatedly spread those claims while viewers were urged to buy his products. His company has offered discounts to customers who use the promo codes “QAnon” and “FightforTrump,” according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit says Lindell contributed to a “viral disinformation campaign” about Dominion on social media, in broadcast interviews, at pro-Trump rallies and in a two-hour documentary about supposed election fraud — titled “Absolute Proof” — that he created and paid to have aired 13 times this month on One America News.

FROM LAST NIGHT:

McConnell’s Grip on His Caucus Holds Firm
Politico:
“The crumbled alliance between Trump and McConnell, who worked hand-in-glove on political and legislative strategy for four years, has finally brought the GOP to the reckoning that never happened after the 2016 election.

"Trump may take another swipe at McConnell in the coming days at the Conservative Political Action Conference. But McConnell probably won’t hear it: He is not expected to speak at CPAC, according to Republican sources.

"McConnell still hasn’t spoken to Trump in more than two months.
And interviews with nearly a dozen Senate Republicans on Monday night make clear that it will take more than a war of words with Trump to knock McConnell off his perch.

THE MAN WHO WAS UNTIL RECENTLY "THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD" CAN'T EVEN TAKE OUT MITCH MAC, LOL.

What’s next

Once Congress passes the next coronavirus stimulus package, President Biden appears to be planning to make a massive infrastructure spending bill his next legislative priority. The details of the proposal are still being sorted out, but Biden is expected to push for a major investment in green energy to be included in the plan.

Perspectives

Energy systems must be built to withstand unprecedented weather

“The changing climate means the past is no longer a guide to the future. The entire country must get much better at preparing for — and insuring against — the unexpected.” — Jesse Jenkins, New York Times

Politics and lobbying groups can’t be allowed to hold back necessary reforms.

“The United States’ patchwork energy quilt will need dramatic reform to meet the challenges of both decarbonization and the extreme weather ahead. And unfortunately, the political response to Texas’s crisis so far shows how hard fossil fuel interests will fight to keep the current system in place.” — Kate Aronoff, New Republic

Strong regulations are needed to ensure that energy systems are resilient.

“States whose power grids survive the cold have utilities that operate in a regulated environment that ensures the providers do what’s right for the entire state — individuals and businesses — versus what’s best for a small handful of energy producers financing statewide political careers.” — Editorial, Las Vegas Sun

New battery technologies can provide a backup for when production breaks down,

“Another emerging option could ensure reliability without forcing the U.S. to revert to coal, gas and other carbon-intensive energy sources that contribute to climate change: energy storage, in which electricity from renewable sources can be stockpiled and then released onto the grid when it is needed.” — Josh Lederman, NBC News

Fixing the power grid starts with acknowledging the massive scale of the problem, Republicans are in denial

“The cascade of failures in Texas signals what is perhaps the greatest challenge ahead in this climate-changed world: accepting that business as usual isn’t working. Across the planet, humans have built civilization to withstand the vagaries of a 20th century climate. The extreme weather events of the 21st century will look nothing like those that came before — and hundreds of years of past preparation will not suffice.” — Justin Worland, Time

The U.S. must transition to green energy so weather doesn’t get even more extreme

“The irony is that these fossil fuels have caused climate change. But now climate change is making it impossible for them to even operate. … They just underscore how urgent it is for us to get off fossil fuels, because it's really destabilizing our infrastructure across the board.” — Energy policy researcher Leah Stokes to KCRW

All energy plans must be centered on helping keep people safe regardless of profits

“Centering people’s safety in planning.... is likely critical to making sure we’re optimizing the right things as we face extreme emergency conditions. Considerations like building insulation, community emergency plans and ensuring there are safe and resilient places for people to go can protect against multiple types of failure.” — Infrastructure researcher Emily Grubert to NBC News

The U.S. needs a national grid

“The best way to build resiliency against these events, which are increasing in frequency due to climate change, is to connect the regions of the country into a single national grid, so that regions facing difficulty can draw power from neighbors who aren’t.” — David Roberts, Vox
