Opposition to Georgia voting law looking more and more suspect

The anger far outweighs what they claim to be angry about

But now, Georgia Democrats’ biggest crusade is against SB 202, which will, among other things, reduce the time frame in which voters can request absentee ballots, requires an ID number or photocopy of an ID to request and return ballots, shortens the runoff period (which subsequently shortens the early voting window) — and prohibits anyone but poll workers from distributing water to voters waiting in line.
- First the claimed the law  reduced the election day voting hours. That was a lie.
- Then they argued that the law made it a crime to bring water for the people in line. A lie.

So now they appear to be focusing their energies on mundane issues like having the time to request an absentee ballot dropped down to just over 11 weeks (which seems reasonable enough) or the requirement that a voter supply proof of ID as a requirement to use the absentee ballot process, which is something you would have to do in Georgia if you voted in person. And let's be serious, how is it "racist" for Georgia to reduce the time between the general election and run-off elections? It's the same two people running again for the same office who both just ran campaigns that were probably months long. Interestingly, Georgia is introducing ranked voting for overseas and military ballots, and those ballots will automatically be used for the run-offs. The logical next step in that process is to allow everyone access to the same sort of ballot that can be used in both the general and run-off election.

I mean seriously, not allowing someone to request an absentee ballot in August is racist? Is there something that I don't know about that does not allow minorities enough time to fill out a ballot of they have to wait till September to request a ballot that needs to be returned in November? Georgia still allows no-excuse absentee ballots which puts them ahead of many other states that do not even offer absentee ballots in general. Not sure what the "racism" is there.

Moreover, if you need to present an ID to vote in person in Georgia, why would that requirement not be present when you fill out an absentee ballot? A good question that can probably be answered by the recent court cases surrounding executive orders that basically reduced if not totally ignored the need to check an absentee ballot signature against those on-line. If Governors are going around telling poll workers to ignore signature matching (as being too tedious during a pandemic) then perhaps the manual issue of comparing signatures should be replaced with something simpler and more objective, like proof of Identification. Again, you cannot vote in person without ID, why should absentee voting provide a loophole to that requirement.

Restricting the time for run-offs? Seriously? Even with the new laws, the run-offs will offer a longer early voting period than many states do for their general election. This should not burden anyone, much less overburden minorities.

I am not even going to address the laughable idea that we need to feel sorry for political advocacy groups who are having their loop-hole closed as it pertains to violating the Federal laws of handing out gifts or campaigning at polling stations.

Bottom line: When you are reduced to complaining about nearly three months not being enough time to request an absentee ballot, having to follow the same ID requirements to vote absentee as you would to vote in person, having less time between a General and Runoff election, or the fact that political advocacy groups will be banned from handing out anything of value to people standing in line, then you are pretty much grasping at straws.  Those who claim to be upset about these features in the law are either misinformed, blatantly partisan, or virtue signaling. As described in a previous thread, there are things that Democrats are upset about. But it really isn't what they claim it to be.

There’s nothing unusual about exaggeration in politics. But when it comes to the debate over voting rights, something more than exaggeration is going on.
What is true in MHO is that there are provisions that allow more voting...However....there are provisions that counties can opt out of Sunday voting and allow the state legislature to determine the outcome of votes!!!! That is concerning in that the GOP has taken out the election losses on Rathesberger doing his JOB!!!!!! Instead of bowing to Trump to find votes....Now the legislature that are solid red and have no such guardrail to make the choice.....very sad that the good again does not outweigh the bad over the perceived big trump lie!!!!!

There’s a real — and bipartisan — misunderstanding about whether making it easier or harder to vote, especially by mail, has a significant effect on turnout or electoral outcomes. The evidence suggests it does not.

The fight over the new Georgia election law is only the latest example. That law, passed last week, has been condemned by Democrats as voter suppression, or even as tantamount to Jim Crow.

Democrats are understandably concerned about a provision that empowers the Republican-controlled State Legislature to play a larger role in election administration. That provision has uncertain but potentially substantial effects, depending on what the Legislature might do in the future. And it’s possible the law is intended to do exactly what progressives fear: reshape the electorate to the advantage of Republicans, soon after an electoral defeat, by making it harder to vote.

ROGER SIMON: Virtue Signaling Replaces Baseball as America’s National Pastime.

Forget the actual details of the Georgia voting law they claim to be protesting. Facts are immaterial. The national pastime has joined the ranks of the “woke” virtue signalers.

Yes, that national pastime has scarcely been what it was for some time, but then what is? Basketball and football are also in decline. No sports are left, really, at least spectator sports.

Virtue signaling itself has become our national pastime.

Everyone, at least that percentage of the country who voted for the current president, practice it on a daily or even hourly basis, like a catechism.

The president himself we could call the Virtue Signaler-in-Chief. He began his “virtuous” journey in law school where he was almost ejected for plagiarism, begged to stay in, and then later told us he graduated at the top of his class. (He actually graduated at the bottom, as would any plagiarist, if they graduated at all.)

And then there were numerous other “virtuous” cases of plagiarism, including from the British politician Neil Kinnock, but no matter. Our great legal scholar president knows the Georgia election law is wrong. Not only is it wrong, it’s racist.

So he led the charge in moving the game out of Atlanta and essentially gave permission to the league executives to make their reactionary move.

The result, baseball is virtually dead from virtual signaling. Call it murder by idiotic ideology.

But baseball is just a game and America is no such thing. It was once the beacon of all humanity when it came to democracy and freedom but that is no more.

Like any good moral narcissist (i. e. he or she who virtue signals) we are no longer liberty and freedom lovers. We are now “woke.”

“Woke,” however, is not an American idea. Neither were, completely, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. To some extent they came from Europe, influenced, as many readers know, by John Locke, among others, but they were developed and enhanced in a uniquely American way by Jefferson, Madison, et al. The Federalist Papers were a flower of the Enlightenment.

Not so “woke.” Its antecedents are entirely European and have little to do with democracy and freedom and everything to do with a kind of neo-Marxist, top-down power game of a fascistic nature.

The American idea and ”woke” are, in essence, opposites.

Then there's Stacey Abrams applauding MLB pulling the ASG from Atlanta, even though it will cost the mostly minority city tens of millions of dollars. So she's not really looking out for the black voters of Atlanta. She's all about politics, being in the spotlight and little else.

The dementia president is again being exposed for his hypocrisy. The wealthy tax loopholes he's been bashing are the same ones he's been using for years, funneling his income through two S corps to reduce his taxes.

Oops.

Every poll in the country has over 70% support for voter ID.

It’s time to stop listening, or caring, about the loudmouth, crybaby opinions of the other less than 30%.
