A CNN spokesperson said Saturday that the network has "parted ways" with Rick Santorum, the former US senator and conservative commentator who was the subject of widespread condemnation for recent remarks he made about Native Americans.
In an April speech to a conservative youth group, Santorum he spoke about the religious values of European settlers in the United States and said "we birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here."
"I mean, yes, we have Native Americans," he said. "But candidly, that -- there isn't much Native American culture in American culture."

New coronavirus cases across the United States have tumbled to rates not seen in more than 11 months, sparking optimism that vaccination campaigns are stemming both severe COVID-19 cases and the spread of the virus.
As cases, hospitalizations and deaths steadily dropped this week, pre-pandemic life in America has largely resumed. Hugs and unmasked crowds returned to the White House, a Mardi Gras-style parade marched through Alabama’s port city of Mobile, and even states that have stuck to pandemic-related restrictions readied to drop them. However, health experts also cautioned that not enough Americans have been vaccinated to completely extinguish the virus, leaving the potential for new variants that could extend the pandemic.
As the seven-day average for new cases dropped below 30,000 per day this week, Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pointed out cases have not been this low since June 18, 2020. The average number of deaths over the last seven days also dropped to 552 — a rate not seen since July last year. It’s a dramatic drop since the pandemic hit a devastating crescendo in January.
I’m always cranky when in public, and when I really think about it, the problem is me. This is an actual conversation I had with a receptionist yesterday while scheduling a colonoscopy:
Her: How many I help you?
Me: I’d like to schedule a colonoscopy.
Her: Were you referred to us?
Me: No, I’m just cold calling.
Her: …
Me: Dr. Marks.
Her: Ok, do you have a preference for which doctor?
Me: Am I going to be sedated for this?
Her: Yes, you won’t feel anything.
Me: That’s not what I am worried about.
Her: What are you worried about?
Me: Recognizing someone at the grocery store.
Her: No, you won’t remember anything.
Me: Then I don’t care.
Her: Care about what?
Me: Which doctor.
Everyone around me isn’t stupid. I’m just an asshole.

Much has been made of Caitlyn Jenner’s entry into the California gubernatorial free-for-all. Much of the political buzz about Jenner has to do with the claim that being “socially liberal and fiscally conservative” is the way forward.
This is supposed to be a magic formula that can transform American politics. In a state like California, the financial tiller of such a high-tax, spendthrift state needs a firm hand. Yet on social issues, the successful politician must be equally uncompromising, i.e., anything goes.
It’s nothing new. Way back in 1980, the politically moderate congressman John Anderson defected from his Republican Party to run as an independent against Ronald Reagan and incumbent Jimmy Carter in the presidential election. Anderson was also known as a “fiscal conservative and social liberal,” although it may have been a little easier to define those terms in those days when we only had two sexes and the national debt–to–GDP ratio was only 32 percent.
So what is a fiscal conservative and a social liberal? Perhaps the socially liberal part of it is somewhat easier to imagine. In California, to be a social liberal is to accept a Byzantine and constantly evolving set of rules that include the following: Men can have periods and women can have penises, but all white people are immutably white and hence suffer from privilege, fragility, and unconscious bias. The social liberal believes that heroin or methamphetamine addiction is a legitimate lifestyle choice, and theft is often not a crime, but a “poverty crime” that should be decriminalized. The list goes on. And on and on.
