Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven

It’s not an accident; it’s Democrats turning their own failures into political power.
If you attempt to watch the YouTube version of Tucker Carlson’s report on what’s going on in Atlanta from Monday night, you’ll find yourself wading through warnings that “the following content has been identified by the YouTube community as inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.” There is nothing pornographic in Carlson’s report. Nor is there foul language.

What’s “inappropriate” or “offensive” in it is the truth about the people who run Atlanta, truth that everyone knows and understands. It’s the fact someone might speak the truth in a video appearing on YouTube that is offensive to the “YouTube community.” The funny thing is, Carlson isn’t telling the half of it.
Let’s introduce you to a term you should be familiar with if you want to fully understand urban Democrat governance and its effects on the population of a city. That term is Weaponized Governmental Failure.
Somewhere along the line, the urban Democrat machine politicians realized that running cities badly enough would chase off the middle class and leave them with a thin crust of wealthy people over a large mass of the poor. And a city thus populated would never elect Republicans, or even reform-minded Democrats. Accountability would disappear.

There is probably no class of individuals on the planet that are worse at their jobs than big city Mayors and big city City Counsel members.  These people are generally highly partisan, highly political, and highly incompetent. But they become kingmakers in sorts because of the large mass of people that they reign over. Ironically those whom they reign over are either just as partisan and political as they are (those would be the wealthy) or completely fooled into believing that the real fault for the big city plight falls with someone else, somewhere else (those would be the poor).

Now I am not convinced that this is part of a giant diabolic conspiracy to liberalize the big cities into what we are seeing today. I honestly believe that most of these elected leaders are probably 20% conniving and 80% incompetent. It's my humble opinion that they believe in what they are doing or otherwise believe that their leadership is what is needed. Perhaps they even believe that their own failures are the fault of other people.

But the concept is an interesting one and worthy of debate. The facts are obvious. It's hard to live in a community where there isn't a thriving middle class. Middle class America in many ways is the American dream, even more so than being wealthy. To raise children in an environment that stresses community. To volunteer to coach, to get involved with local events, and to have a personal relationship with your city is all middle class. You neither experience that when you are poor or when you are rich.

To think of a community where there is just that hole is saddening. Where those who might want to get involved are incapable and those who can are unwilling.  Everyone is unhappy to some degree and everyone is looking for someone to blame. Those they should be blaming are pointing fingers at other boogeymen as a means to maintain power, and unfortunately they seem to be falling for it.

What is Freedom of the press, Roger?

To have people who run the forum for journalists pick and choose which news stories are determined to be good or bad?

Freedom of the press would be for Tucker Carlson and Rachel Maddow to be treated exactly the same in any forum where people go to read them.

When someone else determines for you or I which journalists and which opinions are worthy of our time... that is the opposite of freedom.

I know you will never get this through your thick skull, but YouTube or Facebook or Twitter are not the press. Carlson is the press. He is the one who is supposed to be guaranteed freedom to give his opinion to you or I without some third party weighing in on it.

Biden has made clear that he intends to give Putin a choice: Cease the attacks, and crack down on the cybercriminals operating from Russian territory, or face a rising set of economic costs and what Biden calls a set of moves by the United States to “respond in kind.”

If the Russians didn't have the second largest nuclear weapons, and sufficient energy resources, they would be a third world nation.

Cybersecurity is the new nuclear weapons system. Outside of Ukraine and the imprisonment of journalists and the murderers, Cybersecurity should be the biggest outcome of this summit meeting.

GENEVA — While President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in a well-choreographed greeting and posed for photos ahead of their summit here, a chaotic scene was unfolding between the U.S. and the Russian press in front of them.

Reporters covering the event as part of the small group called the press pool described a shoving match that broke out moments after Biden and Putin went inside the historic villa for their meeting.

American and Russian journalists rushed to enter the building for a second planned photo opportunity, but they were stopped by U.S. and Russian officials who told them they had to line up in single file before entering the building.

Biden and Putin meet at Geneva summit

Some reporters began to line up, but others continued to push and shove for approximately 10 minutes to get their way inside. An NBC News journalist representing the television networks as part of the press pool described being elbowed and shoved, with security, press and government officials yelling in both Russian and English.

Putin looked typical, Biden just looked normal.

Putin was happy because they won't have another Helsinki. So he is on Russian media immediately. It made him look stronger than Biden.

THE BIDEN-PUTIN SUMMIT BEGINS WITH A SHOVING MATCH AMONG JOURNALISTS

The fake news York Times reports

After spending much of his first trip abroad working to rebuild and strengthen America’s alliances in Europe, President Biden is meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on Wednesday in a summit freighted with history and fraught with new challenges.

Mr. Putin, who flew in from Sochi, Russia, arrived first for the meeting, which is taking place in an 18th-century Swiss villa perched above Lake Geneva. A short time later, Mr. Biden’s motorcade pulled up — Russian, American and Swiss flags waving in the breeze under a blue sky — with the United States entourage.

The two leaders were greeted by President Guy Parmelin of Switzerland, who welcomed them to Geneva, “the city of peace.”

“I wish you both presidents a fruitful dialogue in the interest of your two countries and the world,” he said.

Mr. Biden turned to Mr. Putin, holding out his hand; Mr. Putin took a step toward him and shook it. They then moved into an ornate library, where both men sat stone-faced and mostly in silence as members of the news media jostled to get into the room.

“I would like to thank you for the initiative to meet today,” Mr. Putin told Mr. Biden. “Still, U.S.-Russian relations have accumulated a lot of issues that require a meeting at the highest level, and I hope that our meeting will be productive.”

Mr. Biden said a few words before the camera crews were ushered out and the leaders moved into private sessions that could stretch for five hours. The two sides will engage in difficult topics ranging from military threats to human rights concerns.

Breaking news is that they may be done fairly soon.

But they are discussing highly complex issues.

The great coldheartedtruth is that our President held meetings with experts in cybersecurity.

The second session was just the two and intepretors and again not just the two of them without notes on what they discussed.

Like the former President Trump who then embarrassed the United States

GENEVA —

President Biden traded the warm welcome of European allies Wednesday for his first sit-down as head of state with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow are arguably at their worst since the Cold War.

But both leaders opened the meeting with gestures of respect. Putin, notorious for late arrivals intended to make his rivals wait, pulled into the driveway of the summit site first and ahead of schedule.

Biden, whose armored limousine pulled up 15 minutes later at the front door of the picturesque 18th century villa where talks are occurring, stood with Putin as Swiss President Guy Parmelin welcomed them. And Biden was the first to reach out his right arm as the two men stepped toward one another and shook hands, later gesturing for Putin to enter the villa ahead of him.

Not much more until President Biden speaks about the results of the summit in today.

They don't get to be both, on a whim, depending upon whether or not they agree with the nature of the content, politically or otherwise.

They currently actively censor and silence a large swath of the American public depriving those folks of a voice by virtue of the sheer size and power of control over others.

I hope that if the GOP captures both the house and senate in the midterms that Sec. 230 is their first order of business, with breaking up the tech monopolies a close second.

The day they behave like a newspaper and decide to become editors is the day they become responsible (like a newspaper) for everything printed on their sight. They could be sued by anyone for anything anyone posts, just like a newspaper is responsible.

The only reason they get away with it today (this giant twitter purge started right after the election) was because the Biden DOJ is not going to enforce 230. Everyone knows it.

The real coldheartedtruth

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, speaking to reporters after meeting privately with President Biden on Wednesday, denied that Russia had played a role in a spate of cyberattacks against public and private United States institutions that have grown increasingly bold in recent years.

The Russian leader’s turning of the tables suggested that he was not interested in discussing what Mr. Biden said was a key objective of the talks: to establish some “guardrails” about what kinds of attacks on critical infrastructure are off limits in peacetime.

But Mr. Putin suggested that there had been some kind of agreement to establish expert groups to examine these issues, which United States officials fear would be an effort to tie the questions up in committees, rather than set clear red lines.

The high-stakes diplomatic engagement came at the end of a whirlwind weeklong European tour for Mr. Biden in which he sought to rebuild and strengthen the traditional alliances that often bolstered the United States’ position during the Cold War.

It was a meeting freighted with history and fraught with challenge.

Mr. Biden has argued that the world is at an “inflection point,” with an existential battle underway between democracy and autocracy. And with Mr. Putin at the vanguard of the autocrats, the American leader faced criticism from some quarters for even taking part in the summit.

In a reflection of the sensitivities of symbolism, the White House insisted that the leaders hold independent news conferences, with Mr. Putin speaking first.

“I don’t think there was any kind of hostility,” Mr. Putin said even as he then went on to he note that there were “divergent opinions” on fundamental issues. The two sides, he said, were determined to work “to understand each other” and find areas of convergence.

Once, Superpower Summits Were About Nukes. Now, It’s Cyberweapons.

June 15, 2021

The Russian leader said the nations had agreed that the ambassadors to their respective countries should return to their posts in the near future. He said they would also begin “consultations” on cyber-related issues.

“We believe the sphere of cybersecurity is extremely important for the world in general — including for the United States, and for Russia to the same degree,” he said.

GENEVA — President Joe Biden told reporters Wednesday that the tone of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Switzerland Wednesday in Switzerland was "good, positive," despite discussion of a long list of thorny topics ranging from cyberattacks to human rights abuses.

"I told President Putin my agenda is not against Russia or anyone else. It's for the American people," Biden said.

"I also told him that no president of the United States could keep faith with the American people if they did not speak out to defend our democratic values, to stand up for the universal and fundamental freedoms that all men and women have in our view. That's just part of the DNA of our country," Biden continued. "So human rights are always going to be on the table, I told him."

Biden and Putin meet at high-stakes summit in Geneva

Biden said he raised a number of issues with Putin, including the cases of Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed, Americans imprisoned in Russia; arms control measures; Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny; the importance of a free press; cybersecurity; Russian attempts to destabilize democratic elections; Ukraine; and Belarus, among other topics.

Biden also said he gave Putin a list of 16 items he considered to be critical infrastructure that should be considered off-limits to cyberattacks. He said he also made clear to Putin that there would be "devastating" consequences if Navalny died while in prison, and that the U.S. would take action if Russia attempted to interfere in its elections again.

Biden appeared solo at the press conference rather than jointly with Putin, who held his own session with reporters ahead of the U.S. president's, where he announced that he and Biden had reached an agreement to return the ambassadors of both nations to their respective posts.

I'm going to find the 16 points

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Putin lied.

PUTIN: “From American sources, it follows that most of the cyberattacks in the world are carried out from the cyber realm of the United States. Second place is Canada. Then two Latin American countries. Afterward comes Great Britain. Russia is not on the list of countries from where — from the cyber space of which — most of the various cyberattacks are carried out.”

THE FACTS: This portrayal defies the record. Putin did not identify the source of the list he cited. But Russian-based digital malfeasance is well established by U.S. officials and security researchers alike.

While the U.S., Canada and Britain all engage in cyberespionage, the most damaging cyberattacks on record have come either from state-backed Russian hackers or Russian-speaking ransomware criminals who operate with impunity in Russia and allied nations.

In one such attack, the NotPetya virus did more than $10 billion in economic damage in 2017, hitting companies including shipping giant Maersk, the pharmaceutical company Merck and food company Mondolez.

The cyberattacks that have recently done the most damage are from ransomware sowed and activated by Russian-speaking criminal gangs that enjoy safe harbor in Russia and allied nations and whose members have sometimes colluded with Russian security services.

The global ransomware plague that has caused tens of billions of dollars of damage in the past 18 months — hitting a company, hospital, school or other target about every eight minutes — was a major issue for Biden at the summit.

As well, Russian intelligence operatives famously interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by hacking Democratic email accounts and orchestrating the release of those communications to boost the campaign of Republican Donald Trump and harm his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

Russian military hackers also attacked and briefly shut down portions of Ukraine’s power grid in the winters of 2015 and 2016.

Altogether, the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future estimates there were 65,000 successful ransomware attacks globally in 2020 from all sources.

The May attack on the Colonial Pipeline, which prompted it to cut off fuel supplies to the U.S. East Coast for five days, was the most spectacular in its impact on crucial infrastructure and came after the Biden administration called ransomware a national security threat exceeding cyberespionage

And if he chooses not to cooperate and acts in a way that he has in the past, relative to cybersecurity and some other activities, then we will respond. We will respond in kind. There need not be — we should decide where it’s in our mutual interest, in the interest of the world, to cooperate, and see if we can do that, and the areas where we don’t agree, make it clear what the red lines are. I have met with him. He’s bright. He’s tough. And I have found that he is a — as they say, when you used to play ball, “a worthy adversary.”

America is back to normality.

U.S.-Russia Presidential Joint Statement on Strategic Stability

JUNE 16, 2021STATEMENTS AND RELEASES

We, President of the United States of America Joseph R. Biden and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, note the United States and Russia have demonstrated that, even in periods of tension, they are able to make progress on our shared goals of ensuring predictability in the strategic sphere, reducing the risk of armed conflicts and the threat of nuclear war.

The recent extension of the New START Treaty exemplifies our commitment to nuclear arms control. Today, we reaffirm the principle that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.

Consistent with these goals, the United States and Russia will embark together on an integrated bilateral Strategic Stability Dialogue in the near future that will be deliberate and robust. Through this Dialogue, we seek to lay the groundwork for future arms control and risk reduction measures.

We are going to negotiate on the START agreement on nuclear weapons system.

Russia and the United States signed the New START Treaty in 2010. The document stipulates that seven years after its entry into effect and thereafter each party should have no more than a total of 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and strategic bombers, as well as no more than 1,550 warheads on deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs and strategic bombers, and a total of 800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers, SLBM launchers and strategic bombers.

It expires soon.

Yes and because public forums like Facebook and Twitter did not want to be held liable for what was posted.

Johnny says something defaming about his ex-girlfriend Mary on Facebook, Mary cannot sue Facebook because Facebook is a public forum and does not have the privileges or responsibility of being a "publisher" (or someone who decides which content can be seen). That protection comes from Section 230.

But if Johnny write a letter to the editor defaming Mary and the Newspaper publishes it... then the Newspaper CAN be sued, because they are a "publisher" and therefor responsible for what is printed on their forum. They are not a public forum and not protected by Section 230.

This is EXTREMELY SIMPLE stuff here Roger.

Typical authoritarian philosophy by Putin.

Putin’s comments to the media suggested the two leaders did not find much common ground.

In addition to his denials that Russia had played a destabilizing role in cyberspace, he also took a hard line on human rights in Russia.

He said Biden had raised the issue but struck the same defiant tone on the matter in his news conference as he has in the past. The United States, Putin said, supports opposition groups in Russia to weaken the country, since it sees Russia as an adversary.

What’s going on now? No one who owns a business can hire labor. Why? Government transfer payments roughly work out to $20-$22 per hour. Because all eviction policies were suspended, if you were a renter you could make more by staying home and didn’t have to worry about paying rent. Remember the fight for $15? Republicans got snookered by Democrats and here we are. Benefits end Labor Day and it will be a war in Congress as to who gets what and how they get renewed.

That will make labor markets super tight all summer. While raw materials get the lion’s share of headlines, they are not generally the major reason prices increase. Labor is the largest input into the costs of production.

Raising interest rates will help cool the housing market a little.

The Fed has to be careful. We have basically been on zero interest rates since 2009. But, they need to move rates higher. They also need to unwind their balance sheet. Rick Santelli was saying as much on CNBC yesterday. They have an unprecedented balance sheet full of who knows what.

Government policy, which the Fed can’t control and never seems to advise on, needs to change too. Stop spending. This infrastructure bill should be scaled way back from trillions to just maybe $400 million. End the transfer payments and have a transparent day all of them will stop. No continuing benefits until infinity. If we want universal basic income in the US, let’s have that debate.

An aside, I’d be all for universal basic income, but that would also mean getting rid of every single government program designed to get rid of poverty. It means getting rid of things like public housing, targeted programs, all of it.

Unfortunately, policymakers didn’t think out of the box on Covid. They didn’t follow data, and were imprisoned by bureaucracy and old ideas. They were unable to critically think in a hyper-politicized environment.

Total failure and we will pay a big price. We just don’t know when.

The Federal Reserve expects inflation will climb to 3.4 percent this year, higher than the central bank’s previous forecasts, while also projecting for the first time that there could be two interest rate hikes in 2023.
As recently as March, the Fed predicted inflation would be 2.4 percent for this year. Earlier estimates didn’t project an initial rate hike until 2024.
Fed leaders also moved up estimates for when interest rates could rise from near zero. Projections released after the Fed’s two-day policy meeting showed that the Fed now expects to make two rate increases by the end of 2023, sooner than previously expected.

President Joe Biden gave Russian President Vladimir Putin almost everything he could have wanted at their Geneva summit. He elevated Putin above other leaders, including American allies; and failed to force any real concessions on Russian policy.

The degree to which the summit was a disaster became evident when Putin emerged for his press conference — alone with a forum all to himself.

The Biden team did not want to appear with Putin at a joint conference after the meeting– both because Biden would look frail next to Putin, and because of the media dogma that President Donald Trump had somehow done something terrible by behaving cordially when appearing alongside Putin in Helsinki, Finland, in 2018.

[...]

During the 2020 campaign, Biden claimed that Trump was “unwilling to take on Putin.” But Putin leaves Geneva a winner, and Joe Biden got nothing.

A number of lawmakers expressed their outrage at the representatives who had voted against the motion.

"How you can vote no to this is beyond me," tweeted Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Illinois who is an outspoken critic of Trump.

"Then again, denying an insurrection is as well. To the brave Capitol (and DC metro PD) thank you. To the 21: they will continue to defend your right to vote no anyway."

In a CNN interview on Tuesday night, Rep. Gerald Connolly, a Democrat from Virginia, said: "They voted to overturn an election. But in their vote today, they kind of sealed the deal of basically affiliating with the mob.

"They now are part of the insurrectionist mob. They brought enormous disrepute and dishonor on themselves in not honoring the brave men and women who defended the Capitol of the United States—everybody in it, but also defending the symbol of democracy in the world, not just here in the United States."

Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts said it was "sick" that the 21 Republicans had voted against the bill.

"But I mean, they have to live with themselves," the Democratic congressman told Politico. "It's sad, pathetic."

In a statement to Newsweek, a Capitol Police spokesperson said: "We are humbled and honored for the beautiful recognition."

In this article:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — More than three-quarters of Floridians in a poll released Wednesday disagree with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ policy banning cruise lines from requiring passengers to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

The survey, conducted by the University of South Florida School of Public Affairs, found just 24% said cruise lines should not be allowed to require guests to show proof of vaccination — which is DeSantis’ position.

A plurality, 43%, said it should be mandatory for passengers to provide proof of vaccination on all cruises that port in Florida. And another 33% said it should be up to individual cruise lines. Neither of those options is allowed under rules championed and signed into law by DeSantis.

This is why he was blocked

It’s been more than five months since President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, and those seeking to deflect blame still can’t figure out exactly how to do so. First, the idea was that the riot was provoked by antifa. Then it was that it was preplanned, so Trump couldn’t have incited it. Then it was that the riots weren’t really that bad or that they were even “peaceful,” despite the violence and deaths. None of those arguments is borne out by the evidence available.
But now we’ve got a new entry in this long-running quest for a conspiracy theory that will stick: That perhaps the riot was actually the work … of the FBI?
Fox News host Tucker Carlson wove just such a tangled, conspiratorial web Tuesday night.
Carlson’s theory is essentially that the presence of unindicted co-conspirators in the Capitol riot indictments means those people are government agents and that this, in turn, means the FBI was involved in organizing the riot. The idea has since caught on with conspiratorially minded congressional Republicans.
There are myriad problems with this. But first, let’s get to the argument.
The theory follows Carlson’s well-established style of asking extremely suggestive questions with little basis in evidence — and which are easily disputed — and then treating the answers he likes as fact to build a narrative he prefers. I’ll quote him at-length:

Strangely, some of the key people who participated on Jan. 6 have not been charged. Look at the document. The government calls those people unindicted co-conspirators. What does that mean? Well, it means that in potentially every single case, they were FBI operatives.
