Lovely rhetoric, but what are the laws actually doing?
Republicans have introduced and advanced hundreds of restrictive election bills this year in the wake of former President Donald Trump's stolen election lie. At least 22 bills with restrictive voting provisions had been enacted as of mid-May, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, and at least 61 others were still advancing through state legislatures.
Journalism has reach a level where reporters don't even actually report anymore. An actual reporter would not simply lump over 80 different bills into a single talking point that does little more than provide a personal opinion. Historically our news reporters would report on the bills as they are written. Those that didn't, would have been put on the editorial or opinion pages. Today there is very little difference between reporting and editorializing.
Georgia passed a new voting law. One that is no doubt considered "restrictive" by a reporter who obviously isn't reporting. The law expanded early voting, it codified drop boxes, and it vastly expanded (not restricted) opportunity to vote in Georgia in comparison to the law it replaced. The main critic (Stacey Abrams) admits that her criticism has nothing to do with the bill as written. The major talking point from this law was the law that prevents political groups from handing out food or drink within 150 feet (approximately a half a block) of the polling place.
In Texas, the new law expands early voting hours by an average of two hours a day. While it fails to codify much of the emergency measures put in place in 2020, like the Georgia situation, the Texas law is an improvement (by any objective standards) from the current law that is in place. The major talking point from this law was that Sunday hours were basically "moved" from a typical 9-5 day to a 1-9 day. While 99% of Texans would probably be more willing to go vote early on a Sunday evening than on a Sunday morning (when people are in church, etc) - this change in hours was claimed to be racist and specific to one particular program where organizers took people "from" church directly to early voting.
So far I have seen very little in any of these bills that are actually more "restrictive" than the bills that they are replacing. But the left (Journalists, Democrats, Social Media) are not comparing the new bills to the bills they replaced. Rather they are comparing them with the emergency measures put in place because of Covid. Emergency measures that in many different cases across the country were deemed unconstitutional by the courts. These emergency measures were put in place because of an emergency. They were never intended to be permanent and could legally never remain permanent.
Now what some of these bills "are" doing is also putting laws and regulations in place on things that have just sort of been "done" even though there were no laws that allowed for it. Some are placing regulations regarding certain emergency measures that were questionable at best. One of those issues that caused problems in the last election was the mass mail out of mail in ballots to people who did not request them. Some went to the wrong addresses, some people got confused about why they got them and whether they could still vote in person, and a slew of other things. Texas and other states are making this practice illegal (as it has technically always been since there was no law that allowed it). But these are the things that parents need to do when children take it upon themselves to make up their own rules.
At the end of the day, I would be very curious as to how many of these "restrictive" laws (if any) are actually more restrictive than the laws that they replace? But much like Democrats demand that an increase in spending that doesn't meet their expectations is a spending cut, the "restrictions" here are simply that the law will not codify into existence the sort of "expansion" of election chaos that the left would really like to see.
A well organized, highly monitored, and fairly counted election is what every conservative wants. Should be what every AMERICAN wants. Every legal voter should be provided a chance to vote and every voter should know that every vote is being counted and monitored. That is a basic concept that seems more reasonable than restrictive to me.

Voter ID is the rule, not the exception, in democratic elections around the world.
That’s because they are an important component of ensuring election integrity.
Is Biden going to tell our allies at the G-7 that they are part of "The New Jim Crow”?

The only reason for the Democrats "electron reform" bill is to make easier to cheat and harder to catch.
For them it is one-party rule or bust.
The Big Lie is in danger because of the Department of Justice under Attorney General Merrick, who should be on The Supreme Court.
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that he plans to double the number of staff within the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division dedicated to protecting voting rights.
"There are plenty of things up for debate in America, but the right of all eligible Americans to vote is not one of them," Garland said.
The staffing surge would occur over the next the next 30 days, he said, and the beefed-up unit will use all laws at its disposal "to ensure that we protect every qualified American seeking to participate in our democracy."
Garland added that he plans look directly at newly-passed state laws aimed at restricting voting.
"So far this year, at least 14 states have passed new laws that make it harder to vote," Garland said.
"We are scrutinizing new laws that seek to curb voter access and where we see violations, we will not hesitate to act. We are also scrutinizing current laws and practices in order to determine whether they discriminate against Black voters and other voters of color," he said.
Garland also said the department would scrutinize "post-election audits to ensure they abide by federal statutory requirements to protect election records and avoid the intimidation of voters," a clear reference to a fraudulent QAnon Republican-backed audit in Arizona.
"We will also partner with other federal agencies to combat election disinformation that potentially tries to suppress the vote," Garland said.
"Finally, we have not been blind to the dramatic increase in menacing and violent threats against all manner of state and local election workers, ranging from the highest administrators to volunteer poll workers. Such threats undermine our electoral process and violate a myriad of federal laws," and will be dealt with aggressively, the attorney general said.
Right wing terrorists have been threatening ballot counters by Proud Boys like you.
Garland said that while his agency will do its best to protect the right to vote, he also needs help, and urged Congress to pass two bills that are currently in limbo — the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. The bills, if passed, "would provide the department with tools it need," Garland said.
In a statement, the White House hailed Garland's announcement as "major," and said that President Joe Biden is "taking steps to ensure DOJ (has) the resources needed to enforce existing laws."NBC news.

They are carefully designed to reduce turnout, without violating the Constitution.

But because he refused to swallow The Big Lie

(In America it is getting harder to identify minority vs non-minority neighborhoods since increasingly neighborhoods are becoming mixed race.)

Even Bill Barr said that there was not enough evidence to prove the election was stolen.
Democrats cheated and they use the pandemic to ram laws that made it easier to cheat. Whether it was enough to change the election will never know until it is relegated to a footnote in history.

That's what this has always been about. Democrats seek permanent rule. Gaming our electoral system massively in their favor secures that.
No one is making it "harder to vote." Talk about a big lie.

A waste of time and money. The only law they can enforce is the voter's rights act it's about to expire for the suspect states it covers.
This means that as long as it passes constitutional muster, the state can run it's elections according to their individual needs.

So alky, what you're saying is that you would want an election result to stand even if it was obvious to everyone involved that it was a fucking fraud.

Mail-in ballots are printed on special paper in every state, with specific barcoding unique to each election office and special US Mail election insignia. If a foreign country or a private entity went to the trouble to manufacture ballots, they wouldn’t be delivered by the USPS, and they wouldn’t be read or accepted by American election officials. Plus, even if they did somehow manage to discover all of the relevant non-public details for all of the different election jurisdictions, and get ballots through to individual voters with the races they expect to be voting on, elections offices match the signatures on the outside of absentee ballot envelopes to the signatures on voter registration forms.

Then if these laws are discriminatory and trample on voter rights, it will be easy enough for Garland and gang to get the USSC to overturn them all.
Right?
Of course, it' unlikely that the USSC will buy the Abrams idea that it's not how the law is written that is the problem, but rather how the law will be otherwise implemented.
She can "laugh" off the lame Republican argument that none of her criticisms are actually "written in the law" while talking to some liberal hack on MSNBC. But I am guessing a court will be more interested in the "law" itself than a Stacey Abram's opinion about it.

I just want American elections to be as safe and secure as every other first world country. No other first world country (other than Russia) allows people to vote without Identification. No other first world countries allow political operatives to count votes for days after the election.
Why do you see our lack of control and lack of security somehow as commendable?
Why is it that the poorest of poor people in Mexico can be expected to have an Identification to vote... but we sit around and demand that American liberals are not functional, capable, bright, or smart enough to get their own ID - so we need to coddle them?

NICOLLE WALLACE:
I want to provide you with the BEST smoking gun evidence of why this is all BS on the part of Republicans.
I want to show you the Republican governors BRAGGING about how SECURE their elections were. And yet they are now signing into law voter suppression laws to deal with how INSECURE(?) their elections were!
Let's start with that tape; let's see that:
REPUBLICAN GOV. AFTER THE ELECTIOn:
"People are actually looking at Florida and asking the question, Why can't these states be more like Florda? Florida was able to handle eleven million ballots. the way Florida did it I think inspires confidence. I think that's how elections should be run."
BUT LATER:
"Me signing this bill here says, Florida, your vote counts. Your vote is going to be cast with integrity and transparency."
REPUBLICAN GOV. AFTER THE ELECTION:
'As I've said before, we do elections well here in Arizona. The system is strong, and that's why I have bragged on it so much."
BUT LATER:
"This bill is simple. It's all about election integrity."
REPUBLICAN GOV. AFTER THE ELECTION:
"I mean, look at Texas, Florida, and Ohio -- we didn't have any problem counting all of our mail in ballots. We didn't have any problem."
BUT LATER:
"The bill is here because Americans no longer trust the system... [long pause while he tries to think up his next thought] and a country where voters do not trust the system is a country in peril."
NICOLE WALLACE:
I'm going to play that every day untill I get tired of it. These Republicans told everybody that their election results could be TRUSTED because THEY were in charge and they were so good that they were a MODEL Now they are signing laws based on lies that they KNOW are lies because they told the world they are lies.
CHARLIE SYKES:
Well, think about how fast this has accelerated since November. We thought that the country was divided and that we are a post-FACTS society, and it has now moved quite a distance from that because this has now become the heart and soul -- the beating heart of the Republican party is to embrace this BIG LIE, to cast doubt on the election, and to use that then as an excuse to change the laws. And you know, as we said, before we could roll our eyes and treat the Arizona audit as a joke, but a clown with a flame thrower is still has a flame thrower. And the danger of this is that this is spreading from state to state. And, as those sound bites illustrate, they don't actually need to have any EVIDENCE that there was a problem for the Republican governors and legislators to embrace the Big Lie, embrace the theory or to go in and begin to change things. We are post-evidence and there is no logical connection to it, except that this has now become gospel in the Republican party, and it is not just Arizona, I think that in the latest count you had legislators from seven states visit this Arizona audit. So what you're seeing here is aout to metasticize across the country.
_______
HERE'S THE ABSOLUTE HEIGHT OF THE HYPOCRISY OF THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS:
"OUR ELECTIONS WERE SO ABSOLUTELY CORRECT AND WELL DONE THAT WE WERE ACTUALLY BRAGGING ABOUT THEM UNTIL TRUMP TOLD US TO STOP SAYING THAT AND JOIN HIM IN HIS BIG LIE."
And like the cowardly sheep they are,
they're doing just that.

2. And it was delivered by the USPS (all they see is an envelope with an address, it's not their job to determine whether a ballot is legitimate)

Garland Announces Expansion of Voting Rights Unit
June 12, 2021 at 10:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 4 Comments
Washington Post:
“Attorney General Merrill Garland said the additional trial attorneys, which he plans to hire over the coming 30 days, will scrutinize new laws and existing practices across the nation for potential discrimination against Americans of color, including in new measures GOP state lawmakers are pushing. They will enforce provisions of the Voting Rights Act by challenging such laws or practices in court — and prosecute anyone found to intimidate or threaten violence against election officials.
“The expanded unit will also monitor the growing number of post-election ballot reviews being called for around the country by supporters of former president Donald Trump in search of signs of violations of federal laws, Garland said, and will watch over upcoming redistricting efforts to call out discriminatory practices.”

GOP Attacks on Biden’s Agenda Not Breaking Through

“Republicans have tried to beat the drum against the Biden agenda. For weeks Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has hammered away, echoing the critique from Larry Summers, former top economic adviser to the Clinton and Obama administrations, that the pandemic relief package spent way too much money and could prompt an inflation run.
“But that message has, so far, been largely drowned out, especially in the conservative media echo chamber that is intensely focused on cultural issues that spark outrage and help ratings but do little to help win elections.”

Actually it's very plausible.
Proposed voting laws are advancing in state legislatures and in Congress following false accusations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
State-level bills have been introduced across the country. Republican-led proposals that would, for example, limit absentee voting or require early ballots to be hand-delivered rather than mailed, are moving ahead in many so-called swing states that had close results in the last election. Those states include Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida and Texas.
On the federal level, House Democrats passed a bill on March 3 that would expand voting rights and reform campaign finance and redistricting rules. Now it goes to an evenly divided Senate where it is expected to fail.
The bottom line is the President and the Democrats must use the reconciliation procedure to pass HR1.

No, we don’t think it’s funny when grandpa gets lost at home, either. But your gramps isn’t the president of the United State like Joe Biden, so there’s that.
Joe Biden’s mental acuity matters.
After years of trying to paint former President Trump as the wild-eyed man – with former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein threateningto get evidence to invoke the 25th Amendment – the deep state and their leakees in the media had been hunting for something – anything – to get the president on.
But that’s so last year.
Now that Joe Biden is in the Oval Office, the media can’t look away fast enough from the man who obviously suffers from cognitive problems.
And now Joe’s gotten lost again. And this time, Joe got lost in front of the whole world.

Attorney General Merrick Garland laid out on Friday a muscular approach he says the Justice Department will take to protect the right to vote. In a policy speech at the department’s D.C. headquarters, Garland addressed not only the slew of restrictive voting measures advancing in GOP statehouses, but the harassment of election officials and the recent phenomena of dubious post-election “audits” that cast doubt on the 2020 results.
“We have not been blind to the dramatic increase in menacing and violent threats against all manner of state and local election workers, ranging from the highest administrators to volunteer poll workers,” Garland said. “Such threats undermine our electoral process, and violate a myriad of federal laws.”
As for the drive for more post-election audits, which Garland described as fueled by “disinformation,” their “abnormal” methodologies “may put the integrity of the voting process at risk and undermine public confidence in our democracy.”
For years, Republicans have sought to undermine federal voting rights laws, while GOP state legislators over the last decade have ramped up their push to limit ballot access. On Friday, Garland framed the renewed DOJ focus on safeguarding democracy within the department’s long history of making voting rights a key priority.
“Progress to protect voting rights, and especially for Black Americans and other people of color, you lunatics believe
it's discrimination has never been steady,” Garland said.”Moments of voting rights expansion have often been met with counter efforts to curb the franchise.”
But his references to the audits, as well as to intimidation election officials have faced amid President Trump’s 2020 voter fraud fear-mongering, touched on the new territory U.S. democracy finds itself, even though the parallel push to clamp down on ballot access has been years in the making.
“To meet the challenge of the current moment, we must rededicate the resources of the Department of Justice to a critical part of its original mission: enforcing federal law to protect the franchise for all voters,” Garland said.
Garland vowed that within the next 30 days, the department would double the enforcement staff in the Civil Rights division. He said that the department will be “scrutinizing” the new laws and existing practices that may infringe on the right to vote.
“Where we see violations, we will not hesitate to act,” he said.

It looks like the Fed will raise interest rates in order to reduce inflation rates in a few months.
The latest rise in the inflation rate to 4.2% for April 2021 has fueled expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates and tighten monetary policy. The rise in the consumer price index for all items is the largest 12-month increase since a 4.9% increase in September 2008, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported earlier this month.
In recent times, the Federal Reserve has been willing to accommodate higher inflation, but that stance could change with the unexpected pace of price increases in the latest data. “The Fed sent pretty clear and strong messages over the last year or so that it is not going to be deterred by signs of inflation, and that it’s going to keep a loose monetary policy and keep [interest] rates down,”
I never touched her financial assets or anything way else.
Even as the headlines about the Trump era continue to grow darker and more disturbing, it’s important to remember that Trump and his top henchmen are no longer in power. They’re no longer able to do these things. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that Trump and Bill Barr are still in there, still doing these things, still making things even worse for America. But they’re not. They’re unemployed.
In reality, things are getting much better. Just think about who’s now in charge, compared to who used to be in charge. But four years of criminal depravity can’t be cleaned up in a day, or a month, or even six months. There will always be this ongoing lag where a new Trump-era scandal emerges, and then it takes awhile for any sort of justice to be served because the justice system moves slowly, even as yet another Trump-era scandal emerges. But we’re heading in the right direction. Let’s keep up the pressure, and continue the great American turnaround.
Trump is in serious danger with the law.
But the legal system takes time.

Analysis
GOP attacks on Biden agenda can’t break through conservative culture wars
It’s harder to build a message against big government spending after Trump officials oversaw a $9 trillion jump in the federal debt.
And just think you conservatives did that in just 1 term!!!!!!
Some Republicans fear that as long as their conservative echo chamber focuses on cultural issues, it will give Biden room to shore up support among independent voters who will decide the next few elections.
In the late April poll from Fox, voters overwhelmingly supported Biden’s plan to finance his expansive agenda: 63 percent supported raising taxes on those making more than $400,000 while just 33 percent opposed that.
For now, Cramer and other Republicans are just hoping that the public will see the same economic trends they see now.
“Stay on the message. As long as it’s true, keep repeating it,” he said. “Then when people start seeing it for real, when they start seeing that it’s costing them 20 percent more to fill their gas tank or 40 percent more to buy groceries, it’ll become its own message.”
But if they do nothing they will take the blame!

Meet a beaner hero
I wonder if he caught the paper towel in Puerto Rico
Meet Sergeant First Class Jorge Otero-Barreto, aka "The Puerto Rican Rambo"...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Between 1961 and 1970, Otero-Barreto deployed 5 times to Vietnam, seeing combat on nearly 200 missions. He earned 2 Silver Stars, 5 Bronze Stars with "V", 5 Purple Hearts, and many other personal awards in addition to his nickname. His 2nd Silver Star came in May 1968, while leading his squad through an enemy held village, killing numerous NVA in their holes as he overran their machine gun positions. Today, Otero-Barreto has been recognized for his service in numerous ways by the US and Puerto Rico.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"...serving with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 502d Infantry Regiment, 101st Air Cavalry Division, was occupying defensive positions around a village north of Hue. The village was occupied by elements of the North Vietnamese Army and had defied all offensive attempts for two days. At 0415 hours, the enemy began a series of human wave attacks against Company A in a desperate attempt to break out of the village. After the human wave assaults had twice been driven back and 58 enemy lay dead, the enemy forces withdrew into the village for their final stand. The first platoon led Company A into the village to destroy the remainder of the NVA and Sergeant Otero was the leader of the point element. Suddenly the point came under fire from RPGs, machine guns, and small arms firing from enemy bunkers and spider holes. With complete disregard for his own safety, Platoon Sergeant Otero immediately assaulted the nearest machine gun emplacement and killed all three of its crew members. He then led his squad through enemy fire in assaulting three more enemy positions, overrunning them and killing or incapacitating all of the enemy. Platoon Sergeant Otero swiftly moved his squad to occupy vacated enemy positions and place effective fire on the remaining enemy so that other Company A platoons could maneuver."

The disclosure that the records had been seized raised a number of troubling questions. Who else may have been targeted? What was the legal justification to target members of Congress? Why did Apple, a company that prides itself on user privacy, hand over the records? And what end was the Trump Justice Department pursuing?
The revelations also are forcing the Biden Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland to wade back into a fight with their predecessors.
“The question here is just how did Trump use his political power to go after his enemies — how did he use the government for his political benefit,” said Kathleen Clark, legal ethics scholar at Washington University in St. Louis.
The effort to obtain the data came as Trump was publicly and privately fuming over investigations by Congress and then-special counsel Robert Mueller into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia.
Trump inveighed against leaks throughout his time in office, accusing a “deep state” of working to undermine him by sharing unflattering information.
When I did some research, I found out that kputz didn't know how it works, because all he ever said that I'm stupid.
He never once said that increasing interest rates would bring more revenue into the system and therefore it would decrease the federal debt. Not the deficit.
The deficit is caused by insufficient funding for governmental operations by reducing taxes on the top one percent.
Exactly right gibberish gibberish by kputz

Still looking for the reasons for gas prices"
Simple, exchange of a good provided for remuneration.
Comparisons are being made of our current economy to that of the Jimmy Carter presidency of the 1970s. President Biden's policies appear to parallel those of the Carter administration. We haven't heard the term "stagflation" in the news for the past forty years. That's the term for high unemployment and high inflation. It's measured by what is called the Philips Curve. There certainly are similarities to our present economy and that of the 1970s.
Presently we are looking at inflation, slow job growth, shortages of materials, and even long lines for gasoline. While the gasoline shortage was only a temporary one affecting only a portion of the country, it was caused by a pipeline shutdown. This was exacerbated by the fact that President Biden shut down the Keystone Pipeline his first day in office. Prices, however, continue to rise due to the lessening of supply.
Did the poor economy of the 1970s begin under Jimmy Carter? Not really. Looking back, we know that as early as President Nixon's first term, he imposed a wage-price freeze on the United States. On the night of August 15, 1971, he made that announcement in a nationally televised address. We were also hit with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil embargo of 1973. This led to long gasoline lines, gasoline rationing, and inflation caused by an increase in the cost of oil.
This inflation lasted throughout the 1970s. President Ford, who completed the last year and a half of the Nixon presidency, made attempts to deal with inflation. His means of dealing with it was to have people wear WIN buttons. WIN stood for "Whip Inflation Now." Some people might say it was as effective against inflation as a mask mandate is in stopping a pandemic.
Roger , is right.
I did never say it, because it is pure word salad nonsense.
"He never once said that increasing interest rates would bring more revenue into the system and therefore it would decrease the federal debt. Not the deficit"
Well said American "Thinker
It's a balancing process.
Timing Is Everything
It all comes down to timing. The economy has to be robust enough to handle the increase in the cost of borrowing. If the Fed increases interest rates too quickly – before the economy is ready for it—the realized effect of the interest rate increase can be too much, and the measure could backfire. The economy would become strained and fall into a recession.
Moreover, the effect of interest rates going up would not only be felt in the U.S. If interest rates rise too quickly, the comparative value of the dollar could go up, affecting world markets as well as domestic companies with businesses in other countries.

As with all drivers of financial assets, a very rapid move is generally not a good thing. The markets are interconnected, so if one input changes too quickly, it dislocates other areas. For example, if interest rates were to rise very quickly, it would yield dramatic, negative effects on bond prices, currencies, and effectively stunt growth in the real economy. Companies would suddenly and unexpectedly be hit with higher borrowing costs. This would hurt earnings, increase their cost of capital, and dampen investment.
Similarly, investors would see their net worth plunge if they’re invested in bonds. In theory, this situation would then begin to self-adjust towards lower interest rates. Likewise, the Federal Reserve System would also intervene through monetary policy to slow down the rate growth.
The experts at the Fed are highly educated economists who have known a lot more than kputz.

Deborah Birx Wanted Trump to Lose Election
June 12, 2021 at 3:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
“A new book written by one of President Joe Biden’s top coronavirus advisers suggests Dr. Deborah Birx hoped former President Donald Trump would lose the 2020 presidential election,” CNN reports.
“In 'Preventable,' his new book detailing the federal government’s failures on mitigating the pandemic,
Andy Slavitt writes that he met with Birx last August in Minnesota after she briefed local officials.
Once a close adviser to Trump, she had been cast out of his inner circle by that time and replaced by Dr. Scott Atlas, a radiologist with no epidemiological experience whom Trump hired after watching him on Fox News.”

Blue States Will Meet Biden’s July 4 Goal

Harry Enten: “The United States looks increasingly unlikely to reach President Joe Biden’s July 4 vaccine goal. We need at least 70% of all adults to have one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and we’re on pace to have somewhere between 67% and 68%.
“The overall picture masks, however, an underlying pattern:
Nearly all of the states Biden won will make his goal,
while all of the states he lost are unlikely to.”
