Covid deaths - seven day rolling average

If you listened to the left, you would think things are getting dramatically worse?
  • April 1st - 980
  • April 15th - 902
  • May 1st - 721
  • May 15th - 685
  • June 1st - 424
  • June 15th - 368
  • July 1st - 258
  • July 15th - 253

Now given the nature of this sort of virus, it's unlikely that these numbers will go down to zero any time in the near future. In fact, I would be surprised if it didn't stick somewhere between 200-300 for a while here. The final phases of these sorts of pandemics are generally pretty stubborn. We may still be talking about Covid in 2024.

More to the point, the number of people becoming fully vaccinated will continue to increase and quite frankly it's impossible for the number of people fully vaccinated to actually go down. While there will still be a percentage of the population who won't get vaccinated, that is perfectly normal. I am one of the many Americans who does not take the yearly "flu" shot and I rarely get sick. Not that I believe there is anything nefarious about the vaccine for the flu. I just don't want to mess with that portion of my immunity system when I don't appear to need it.

I think the more we hear about vaccinated people catching the virus, the less likely it will be to convince the unvaccinated to get the shot. Nothing was more damaging to the cause of getting everyone vaccinated than the three Texas Democrats story. That was truly a phenomenal blunder. Obviously they didn't catch the virus on purpose, but the whole manner in which they posted pictures of themselves flying without masks or social distancing is going to haunt them.

That being stated, a rise in cases or deaths cannot be because of the number of vaccinations. Again, vaccinations are only going up and they cannot come down. Plain and simple. It is logically impossible to blame any future "rise" on a lack of vaccinations. If there is a future rise, it will be because of a variant that the vaccination does not prevent.

But maybe the bigger point is this: if we do end up with a serious variant, then eventually a lack of a complete solution will be put on the head of the President and his Administration. It's not up to Governors or local politicians or the previous administration to solve any new problems that come along with the variants and the vaccinations.

Democrats and the media will fight like hell to come up with someone else to blame as they always do. But the buck will stop with Biden and his team. I doubt very seriously that they are prepared.

U.S. Leads THE WORLD Again In New Daily Coronavirus Cases
July 18, 2021 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 156 Comments

The United States recorded 79,310 new cases of COVID-19, more than any other country in the world, the Daily Beast reports.

The soaring number matches the level hit in October 2020, a record at the time, though it would not remain so for long.

The Week
quotes a WHO epidemiologist: “We’re getting further away from the end of the pandemic.”

Why Republicans should never govern again.

One fifth of Americans believe that it is “very true” or “probably true” that COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips as part of a covert government-led population control plan.

That is the shocking finding of a new survey conducted by YouGov for the Economist and published this week. The survey asked respondents if “the U.S. government is using the COVID-19 vaccine to microchip the population.” In response, 5 percent of those asked said the statement was “very true” while another 15 percent said it was “probably true.”

That means approximately 42 million adults in the U.S. believe a conspiracy theory cooked up by anti-vax disinformation groups who claim the pandemic is a cover for a plan to implant trackable microchips in people, and that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is behind it.

The claim initially surfaced last year but gained renewed momentum last month when notorious disinformation superspreader Sherri Tenpenny claimed, in testimony before the Ohio State Legislature, that vaccines make you magnetic.

The result is that the microchip theory now has more believers than the decades-old and unfounded claim that vaccines cause autism—which 17 percent of Americans believe to be “very” or “likely” true according to the survey.

The survey’s findings show that in the U.S. the greatest threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic right now is not the virus itself, but the continued spread of vaccine misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. right now are among the unvaccinated population, a staggering endorsement of just how effective the vaccines are. Essentially, if all eligible Americans were fully vaccinated, the data suggests deaths would dwindle to virtually zero.

And yet, the latest data from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) shows that less than 60 percent of the U.S. adult population is currently fully vaccinated—despite vaccines being widely available to everyone and widespread efforts to entice the unvaccinated to get the jab.

In some states, CDC data shows the percentage of fully-vaccinated adults is as low as 43 percent.

One of the primary reasons people are so hesitant to get vaccinated is obvious: Anti-vax misinformation, boosted by GOP lawmakers in many cases, has been allowed to spread unchecked on social media platforms for the last 18 months. And despite promises from companies like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, efforts to stop the spread of disinformation have been abysmal.

Take, for example, a crudely edited video claiming that Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Chinese tech billionaire Jack Ma have colluded to put microchips in COVID-19 vaccines.

It was uploaded in November last year and in December, Reuters published a rigorous fact-check of the video, debunking the claims made in it. At the time the video had been shared 27,000 times.

________

So Ch's numbers represent only deaths? And those are as low as they are because so many people have gotten vaccinated, which Ch does not feel compelled to encourage people to do.

So the number of both cases AND DEATHS will most likely GO UP, as this more virulent strain spreads.

But Ch will flap his gums and with many, many unnecessary words try to put this in some other light.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

It was uploaded by a Facebook user who told her followers she had “no idea who made this. I do not have the original link. I have no idea as to the validity of the information in the video.” The user has posted other misinformation and her profile picture is accompanied by the words “exposing friends to extremist content.”

Facebook put a label on the video, calling it “altered media,” and saying the information contained in it “could mislead.” But, crucially, Facebook didn’t take the video down, and it is still available to view

In the last six months it has been viewed over 1.5 million times and shared over 40,000 times.

This is just one example of how Facebook has failed to live up to the repeated promises it executives have made, to do better at preventing people from using their platform to spread COVID-19 misinformation.

On Thursday, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy made a historic announcement, declaring for the first time that misinformation is a public health hazard. He called on technology companies to “take responsibility for addressing the harms” their products are causing.

Murthy has recommended that tech companies redesign their algorithms so that search and recommendation systems don’t surface reckless misinformation, and to make it easier for people to identify and report misinformation.

The problem with this approach is that most people are bad at spotting misinformation.

“In general people are not that good at identifying fake news,” Joshua Tucker, co-director of the NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics, told VICE News. Tucker and his colleagues have been running a large scale study on people's ability to identify the veracity of fake news in real time, and their findings don’t exactly inspire optimism.

“When we showed ordinary citizens stories that had appeared online in the past 24 hours that had been assessed as false by professional fact checkers, fully one-third of respondents thought the stories were true—and only one-third correctly identified them as false,” Tucker said.

The politicization of COVID-19 and the vaccine rollout has also hindered people’s ability to spot misinformation online, Tucker said:

”One of the great tragedies of the COVID response in the U.S. is that attitudes towards covid, masks, and vaccines has gotten caught up in partisan politics. So if conservatives think that the microchip conspiracy is somehow aligned with conservative ideology, we are going to see conservatives even more likely to believe that this is true.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

And the data bears that out. The YouGov poll found that 32% of Republicans said the microchip conspiracy was “very” or “probably” true, compared to 14% of Democrats.

But even when people go searching for more information about something they saw on their Facebook feed, the internet can reinforce the misinformation rather than debunking it. This problem is known as “data voids,” a term first coined by researchers Michael Golebiewski and danah boyd in a paper published in 2019 that outlined how those spreading disinformation could take advantage of a lack of content about new or unique terms to help reinforce misinformation.

“We found that when people were encouraged to search for information online about false information, they were actually more likely to believe those stories,” Tucker said. “We think what is going on here is that when people go to search for information about low quality news, they are finding other low quality news.”

As vaccine take-up has stalled, the Biden administration is attempting to tackle vaccine misinformation head on, with plans that include going door-to-door to convince people to take the vaccine.

But it may be too little too late, and Tucker believes the Biden administration should have been trying to figure this out much earlier.

“It is telling that we spent billions of dollars on developing vaccines, but much less on thinking about how to make sure people are willing to use them,” Tucker said.

“The original Biden-Harris Transition COVID task force lacked any misinformation experts. It is high time to get social scientists who study human behavior and misinformation more centrally involved in the government’s response to COVID.”

Boris Johnson Back In Quarantine
July 18, 2021 at 4:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
“First,
the new British Health Secretary Sajid Javid — three weeks on the job, in the middle of an explosion in cases, who had declared it was time to ‘live with the virus’— announced on Saturday that he’d tested positive for the coronavirus and would self-isolate,” the Washington Post reports.

“Then on Sunday, both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said they’d been alerted by the National Health Service that since they had been in close contact with an infected individual — i.e., Javid — they must immediately quarantine at home.

“The quarantine of the top leadership in a British government struggling to manage the pandemic comes less than 24 hours before Johnson plans to end almost all government mandates in England for mask-wearing and social distancing.”

The New York Times
reports Johnson’s initial announcement that he would take part in a “daily contact testing pilot” rather than isolate himself was met with widespread outrage.

There are only three Covid-19 patients at Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital, on Long Island, New York — a far cry from when the hospital, which is part of Northwell Health, had as many as 600 patients during the peak of the pandemic.

All three patients, who are in the intensive care unit, have one thing in common, said Dr. Hugh Cassiere, director of the hospital's critical care services:

The trend appears to be occurring at hospitals nationwide.

"I haven't had anyone that's been fully vaccinated become critically ill," said Dr. Josh Denson, a pulmonary medicine and critical care physician at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans.

(CNN)When you compare states with high vaccination rates to states that are lagging, the difference in the number of people getting Covid-19 is staggering.

Over the past week, states that have fully vaccinated more than half of their residents have reported an average Covid-19 case rate that is about a third of that in states which have fully vaccinated less than half of their residents, according to a CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas are the only states to have fully vaccinated fewer than 35% of their residents. Average daily case rates in each state were among the 10 worst in the country last week.

Vermont leads the nation with about 66% of its population fully vaccinated -- and while case rates there increased compared to last week, the state still had the lowest case rate in the country last week, with an average of less than one new case per 100,000 people each day.

The fourth wave of COVID-19 cases is here. Will we escape the UK's fate? It's too soon to know.

Karen Weintraub, USA TODAY

July 18, 2021, 10:20 am

A doubling of COVID-19 cases in the past two weeks suggests the USA has entered a fourth wave of the pandemic.

No one knows what the next month or two will bring, but the example of the United Kingdom suggests the infection rate could get high, while hospitalizations and deaths stay relatively low.

Instead of the virus raging through entire communities, it is likely to target the unvaccinated, including children, and if rates are high enough, the most vulnerable of the vaccinated – the elderly and the immunocompromised.

"Since the majority of our population is now immune, it's unlikely that we're going to return to the massive nationwide waves we saw back in January," David Dowdy, an infectious disease epidemiologist with the Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said Wednesday in a webinar with media.

But major outbreaks can still occur, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates.

"We're going to be living in two pandemic worlds, the world that's vaccinated and the world that's unvaccinated," said Dr. Luis Ostrosky, chief of infectious diseases at UTHealth and an infectious disease specialist at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

The three vaccines authorized for use in the USA, from Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson, have all been shown to be highly effective against variants of the virus, including delta, which accounts for most of the cases in the nation.

Visitors wear masks in a shopping district in Hollywood on July 1. Coronavirus cases jumped 500% in Los Angeles County over the past month, and health officials warned July 13 that the especially contagious delta variant spread rapidly among California's unvaccinated population.

More than 99% of those currently hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated. Ostrosky said virtually all his patients are unvaccinated and all regret not getting the shots.

COVID-19 may not be as deadly in this new wave, because older people are largely vaccinated and younger people are less likely to die from an infection, said Ravina Kullar, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist and adjunct faculty member at UCLA Medical Center.

But the delta variant is substantially more contagious than previous ones, though it's unclear whether it makes people any sicker than previous variants.

"The concern about delta is well placed," said Dr. Yonatan Grad, an infectious disease specialist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. "We're certainly seeing that this wave is something to contend with and not to take lightly."

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Sunday doubled down on the Biden administration’s criticisms aimed at social media giants over the spread of COVID-19 disinformation, following President Biden’s remarks last week that Facebook is “killing people” by allowing misinformation about vaccines to proliferate on the platform.

Last week, Facebook hit back at Biden’s comments by issuing a statement from an unnamed official, who told NBC News that the White House is “looking for scapegoats” after falling short of meeting their goal of 70 percent of Americans receiving at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines by July 4.

The official reportedly claimed that Murthy has “praised” Facebook’s efforts to combat COVID-19 disinformation as well.

“In private exchanges the Surgeon General has praised our work, including our efforts to inform people about COVID-19. They knew what they were doing. The White House is looking for scapegoats for missing their vaccine goals,” the unnamed Facebook official said, according to NBC News.

Pressed on the Facebook official’s statement accusing the White House of looking for a “scapegoat” during an interview on CNN, Murthy insisted that he has been “very consistent” in conveying to social media giants that although the platforms have made progress in combatting misinformation on COVID-19, there is room for improvement.

“I’ve been very consistent in what I’ve said to the technology companies, and I’ve spoken with a number of them over the last many months, and my team has as well,” Murthy said. “And what we have effectively said is when we see steps that are good, that are being taken, we should acknowledge those. And there have been some positive steps taken by these technology companies.”

After citing some companies’ decisions to promote “accurate sources” such as the CDC and reducing the prevalence of “false sources” in search results, Murthy then stressed that he has also told social media companies in private and public conversations that their efforts are “not enough.”

“We’re still seeing a proliferation of misinformation online, and we know that health misinformation harms people’s health. It costs them their lives,” Murthy said.

Murthy’s latest remarks double down on his warning last week that misinformation on COVID-19 poses “a serious threat to public health.”

“My concern is that we’re not seeing nearly enough progress here,” Murthy told CNN. “And that’s one of the reasons I issued this advisory. It’s not entirely about the tech companies. I issued this advisory to call the entire country to action. Technology companies have an important role, particularly when it comes to being transparent with the public about how much misinformation is flowing in their sites.”

Asked whether he thinks conservative media such as Fox News is also “killing people” by letting misinformation on COVID-19 run rampant, nodding to Biden’s criticism of Facebook, Murthy stopped short of singling out Fox News, but noted that “all of us” have an obligation to “share the truth” on health matters.

“I think all of us, including the media, including individuals, health professionals, have a responsibility to share the truth about health, as science dictates, as science informs us,” Murthy said. “And unless we do that, unless we are honest about the consequences of our communication with people, unless we are rigorous about ensuring that what we communicate is actually sourced from science, and not from an opinion, on critical issues like the vaccine, then we are going to ultimately put people at risk.”

Murthy, however, made clear that he is troubled by anti-vaccine rhetoric.

“That is my great worry,” Murthy said. “People all across our country, and I hear from folks all the time, who are struggling to make decisions about their health. After this very difficult year we’ve been through, people deserve to have access to accurate information.”

“My worry is that all this misinformation that’s floating around is having a real cost that can be measured in lives lost. And that is just tragic,” Murthy added.

The big lie is killing thousands of Americans.

Former President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that one of the reasons some people are unwilling to take the COVID-19 vaccine is because they "don't trust the Election results" from November 2020.

The former president's comments come after President Joe Biden's administration failed to meet its vaccination goal to ensure 70% of the nation's adults receive at least one shot by July 4. Still, 161 million people are fully vaccinated and 68% of adults have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trump has touted his administration did a "great job" in regard to handling the coronavirus pandemic through programs like Operation Warp Speed, which saw vaccine development and disbursement happen in record time. While he has encouraged people to get vaccinated, a large group of his supporters has erred on the side of caution surrounding the COVID-19 jabs.

"Joe Biden kept talking about how good of a job he's doing on the distribution of the Vaccine ... He's not doing well at all," Trump wrote in a tweemail, adding, "He's way behind schedule, and people are refusing to take the Vaccine because they don't trust his Administration, they don't trust the Election results and they certainly don't trust the Fake News, which is refusing to tell the Truth."

You don't give a shit.

A few Republicans are speaking up as the case count rises. “We have these talking heads who have gotten the vaccine and are telling other people not to get it,” said Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. “That kind of stuff is dangerous, it’s damaging, and it’s killing people.” Utah Sen. Mitt Romney called the politicization of the vaccines “moronic.” But these few voices are trying to fill a void left by their counterparts.
In this vacuum of silence, right-wing voices such as Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham have spread lie after lie about vaccination efforts. And Republican governors such as Kristi L. Noem (S.D.), Ron DeSantis (Fla.) and Mike Parson (Mo.) have encouraged “personal responsibility” or sown fears about government efforts to vaccinate more Americans. Never mind that those governors got their shots months ago. Never mind that, according to some estimates, nearly half of South Dakotans have been infected, or that Florida’s daily case average has quadrupled in the past month. The residents of their states will have to bear the risks, for the good of the governors’ poll numbers.
This pernicious campaign is working. The most recent Washington Post-ABC poll found that 29 percent of Americans probably or definitely won’t get vaccinated, up 5 points from the last survey, in late April. Forty-seven percent of Republicans said they likely or definitely wouldn’t get vaccinated, compared with just 34 percent of independents and 6 percent of Democrats. The ideological split is, if anything, more obvious: 46 percent of conservatives probably or certainly set against vaccination, vs. only 21 percent of moderates and 16 percent of liberals.
Not all vaccine hesitancy is due to red vs. blue politics, to be clear. The broader anti-vaccine movement that existed before the pandemic remains depressingly prevalent. Some haven’t gotten vaccinated because they simply don’t see it as urgent — whether they are young people who mistakenly believe they’re not at risk, or poorer Americans who may not have the time or flexibility to get vaccinated. And there are many Americans who may be hesitant thanks to disinformation and hoaxes spread on social media platforms such as Facebook.
But, as the Post-ABC poll shows, those groups are likely a minority of the unvaccinated. What makes vaccine resistance among Republicans different is that it’s being fanned for partisan gain and right-wing media profit. The result will be hundreds and hundreds — if not thousands — of avoidable deaths. But for those Republicans who stay passive like McConnell, indulge in silly whataboutism like Cassidy, or openly fan the flames like Noem, DeSantis and others, one can only conclude they see this toll as acceptable

The Senate has done this before, the aide added, pointing to the China-focused "U.S. Innovation and Competition" bill.During that process, there wasn’t an agreement on legislation, but senators kicked off the process anyway by moving to proceed on the Endless Frontier Act.Members knew it was a substitute while they negotiated the final bill.

The bottom line: The bipartisan group is hoping to get final text of the bill completed by the time the Senate reconvenes Monday night.

LOL How can we be leading the world after those warp speed Trump vaccinations were made available?

Biden said Trump had nothing to do with the success of warp speed.

That being said operation warp speed was extraordinary successful in delivered a vaccine that was 99% effective. The people who prevented wide adoption of the vaccine are Democrats such as Kamala Harris who said she wouldn't take it because it was developed by Donald Trump.

This sow confusion and doubt about the safeness of the vaccine. This on top of the public's natural suspicion of government the primary driver of lower vaccine acceptance.

Almost every COVID-19 patient in Springfield Missouri's hospitals is unvaccinated, and the dozen or so exceptions are all either elderly or immunocompromised people. The vaccines are working as intended, but the number of people who have refused to get their shots is crushing morale. Vaccines were meant to be the end of the pandemic. If people don’t get them, the actual end will look more like Springfield’s present: a succession of COVID-19 waves that will break unevenly across the country until everyone has either been vaccinated or infected. “You hear post-pandemic a lot,” Frederick said. “We’re clearly not post-pandemic. New York threw a ticker-tape parade for its health-care heroes, and ours are knee-deep in COVID.”

That they are in this position despite the wide availability of vaccines turns difficult days into unbearable ones. As bad as the winter surge was, Springfield’s health-care workers shared a common purpose of serving their community, Steve Edwards, the president and CEO of CoxHealth, told me. But now they’re “putting themselves in harm’s way for people who’ve chosen not to protect themselves,” he said. While there were always ways of preventing COVID-19 infections, Missourians could have almost entirely prevented this surge through vaccination—but didn’t. “My sense of hope is dwindling,” Tracy Hill, a nurse at Mercy, told me. “I’m losing a little bit of faith in mankind. But you can’t just not go to work.”

161 million people are fully vaccinated and 68% of adults have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Trump wrote in a tweemail "He's way behind schedule, and people are refusing to take the Vaccine because they don't trust his Administration, they don't trust the Election results and they certainly don't trust the Fake News, which is refusing to tell the Truth."

Throughout the entire country, people and unwilling to get vaccinated, because the former President has sewn doubt in the minds of hundreds of thousands people who are in ICU units and suffering and dying unnecessarily. He actually said that they are dying of covid-19 virus because he told them that you can't trust the government under the Democrats.

He puts his own self interest ahead of the lives of millions of Americans.

Biden made vaccinations a centerpiece of the early days of his administration. He said the administration would rely on local doctors, faith leaders and other trusted voices to help get over the hump — something research has shown would be most helpful in reaching unvaccinated people. He also pledged to offer "surge teams" to any states requesting assistance with the pandemic.

"We need to go community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood and, oftentimes, door to door, literally knocking on doors to get help to the remaining people protected from the virus," he said.

That plan was quickly seized on by conservative media personalities including Fox News' Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham, and yes, Thecoldheartedtruth,
who decried it as government overreach. At CPAC, Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., warned the door-knocking campaign could soon lead to gun or Bible confiscation. Biden's push led a group of 32 of the most conservative House members to accuse him of seeking to "coerce" people into taking the vaccination.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson — a Republican who has said officials should work to boost vaccinations — claimed such an effort amounted to "trying to scare" people into taking the shots.

"Big Government in control—Joe Biden is sending agents to your door to compel vaccinations," Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., tweeted Friday.

Did the Democrats’ relentless attacks on the vaccines that were expedited by President Trump get some people killed? I suppose they probably did. July 2021. A month that will live in infamy. If there is such a thing as “history” in the Biden–Orwell–Soros omni-dictatorship, July 2021 will mark the month that the Constitution, the “greatest work ever thrown off by the hand and mind of man,” as Gladstone put it, was thrown into the Ministry of Truth Memory Hole.

There’s no place on earth like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Welcome back to the wild.

Ad By San Diego Zoo Safari Park

It was put into the “History Erase” well. A bottomless pit.

In this month, actually starting with the month before, that the superpowers of the tech world, Google, YouTube, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, and Yahoo, admitted to working with the Biden/NKVD administration to suppress free speech.

For months now, we had known that the tech powers were watching us and suppressing any dissident speech against the current administration. I have seen it up close and personal. But what was argued was that the First Amendment to the Constitution protected us only against Congress and the executive branch suppressing free speech. It did not protect us from private enterprises, even very large private enterprises like Amazon or Google or Facebook, keeping tabs on citizens and shutting them out of the internet-sphere if they expressed views contradicting the views and policies of the Biden–Harris–Big Tech Party.

True, there was one big case involving a large steel company suppressing free speech by its workers, and the Supreme Court ruled that such a big company suppressing free speech on its company properties was indeed a violation of the First Amendment. But that was rare indeed.

Now, in the year 2021, the iron curtain has come down hard. With Big Internet Tech and the White House now admittedly colluding to identify and suppress dissidents, even completely nonviolent dissidents, we no longer have a Constitution.

There is just one big corporate–government–IngSoc superstate running everything. Goodbye, America. The GOP, with 50 senators, does nothing. The state legislatures, by far a majority GOP, and the spineless Supreme Court do nothing. And so goodbye to the greatest experiment in the history of the world.

When the Constitutional Congress ended in the late 18th century, as Ben Franklin was walking out, an onlooker said, “What do we have, sir? A republic or a monarchy?”

Franklin answered, “A republic. If you can keep it.”

Monetary lotteries and financial incentives, they argue, are really powerful because, as Wood explains in a podcast, "If you're not thinking about getting a vaccine and then there they are at the local baseball game or swimming pool or airport, and they're giving out free pizza and a T-shirt, well, now I'm interested."

That's a good idea in theory, but some states, like Ohio, have tried this already, with little success.

"It's just not working," Irwin Redlener, who directs the Pandemic Resource and Response Initiative at Columbia University, told Politico.

"People aren't buying it. The incentives don't seem to be working – whether it's a doughnut, a car, or a million dollars."

Wood and Schulman might be right in calling for a distinction to be made between vaccine hesitancy and vaccine apathy. But when it comes to communicating with either group, we need far more research to understand how public health experts can best reach out.

The Viewpoint was published in JAMA.

Trump Urges Americans to Get COVID-19 Vaccine

March 17, 2021 -- Former President Donald Trump urged people on Tuesday to get a COVID-19 vaccine, saying he recommends it to people who are still hesitant or who don’t want to get it.

He also acknowledged that people should be free to decide for themselves but encouraged Americans to consider it.

“I would recommend it, and I would recommend it to a lot of people that don’t want to get it, and a lot of those people voted for me, frankly,” he said during a Fox News interview Tuesday night.

We have our freedoms and we have to live by that, and I agree with that also,” he said. “But it is a great vaccine. It is a safe vaccine, and it is something that works.”

This should end the debate about what Trump said about the COVID 19 vaccine. Only conspericy nuts like Roger would deny the truth.

"Vaccine hesitancy" is constantly discussed as a matter of irrational fear or political bias, but some people are just trying to balance costs against benefits. They might be persuaded to change their analysis, but calling them crazy or stupid is bound to alienate them.

Contrary to thinking inside the government and social media bubbles, not all information flows through the Internet. At this point, many people have personal acquaintances who have experienced significant side effects from vaccination, from brief illness to serious reactions.

Some of the "vaccine hesitant" are balancing these costs against the perceived benefits of vaccination - or more precisely, their perception of the risks from not getting vaccinated - and deciding not to get the shots. They made it through the hell year without vaccination.

Those hesitant people might re-evaluate their cost/benefit analysis if perceptions of either change. Vaccination rates dipped quite sharply after J&J had problems. It's not just panic, it's people making adjustments to reasoned calculations in their heads.

Likewise, vaccine hesitancy grows when people think nothing will really change if they get the shots - they still have to wear masks, there will still be social distancing, lockdowns are looming again. Reducing perceived benefits increases resistance.

If people are approached as rational actors with persuasive efforts to change their measurements of cost and benefits, they might be persuaded to adjust their thinking. This would require acknowledging that not all of the data they are considering is scurrilous "misinformation."

It would also require acknowledging that not all vaccine hesitancy is irrational or politicized. Getting them to change their thinking is very different from bullying them into *abandoning* their thinking by insulting them as dupes, stooges, fanatics, and fools.

One other thing: our government and media lack the humility to admit their own culpability in increasing vaccine hesitancy and ruining public trust in authority. That arrogance makes it difficult for the State and its media to approach the hesitant with mutual respect today.

Nobody in the State-Media axis wants to admit they were mistaken, or deliberately lied, during the hell year of Covid. None of them want to admit politics guided their actions more than science. Biden and Harris babbling about their distrust of Trump's vaccines gets memory-holed.

There has been no reckoning, no admission of errors or confession of guilt, so there can be no fresh start. The State has not taken the smallest steps toward rebuilding trust. Now it speaks with rage and threatens those who distrust it, rather than showing penitence and humility.

And the State is STILL acting in bad faith and with blatant hypocrisy, as most recently evidenced by the Covid-riddled Texas Democrat fleebaggers. The privileged elite of the ruling Party still refuse to take the coronavirus as seriously as they insist WE should.

I doubt anyone in the ruling Party has the humility and wisdom to make the fresh start that would be needed to approach the vaccine hesitant with proper respect and persuade them to change their thinking. It's all arrogance, bluster, hypocrisy, and threats. /end
