In precursor to the Georgia election law challenges, the USSC upholds Arizona restrictions!

SUPREME COURT DELIVERS MAJOR BLOW TO DEMS’ CAMPAIGN AGAINST STATE ELECTION LAW
On the last day before its summer recess, the Supreme Court upheld two Arizona voting provisions that Democrats and civil rights groups challenged as disproportionately burdening minority voters. The vote was 6-3, with only the three hardcore liberals dissenting.
Amy Howe at Scotusblog observes that the decision “will make it more difficult to contest election regulations under the Voting Rights Act.” That’s probably an understatement. The motion to dismiss Kristen Clarke’s suit challenging Georgia’s election law will all but write itself now.
The majority opinion found that the “core” of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, under which the challenge to the Arizona law was made, is the “requirement that voting be ‘equally open.” That determination should be made taking all of the circumstances into account.
In a key passage, the majority stated that the size of the burden imposed by a voting rule is “highly relevant.” “After all,” it observed, “every voting rule imposes a burden of some sort.” Thus, “mere inconvenience cannot be enough to demonstrate a violation of” Section 2.
What if a voting rule affects some racial or ethnic groups more than others? In that event, the majority said, courts should consider the size of the disparate impact. The existence of some disparate impact does not, standing alone, mean that there is not equal opportunity to vote.

Finally, the majority stressed that in cases like this one, courts should look at the reason why states imposed a particular voting rule. And the majority was quite clear that the goal of preventing voter fraud is a “strong and entirely legitimate state interest.”
This is a crushing, but not unexpected, ruling to Merrick Garland's attempt to sue Georgia over their voting law. As previously explained here, the Merrick Garland lawsuit is alleging that the Georgia legislation wrote the law with racist intent. Why was this done? Largely because of the expectation that the Supreme Court would rule as they just did. That a rule or law affecting one racial or ethnic group more than others does not (on it's own) mean that there is not an equal opportunity to vote.

But the fact that the USSC made specific mention that the legislative goal of preventing voter fraud is "strong and entirely legitimate state interest" will make proving that the Georgia law is racist by intent virtually impossible. Obviously Georgia will argue that everything they did was in the interest of preventing voter fraud. The court just openly acknowledged not just that this was a "legitimate" state interest, but a "strong and legitimate" state interest. Almost as if they anticipated the upcoming legal debate.

If one were to have argued last week that Garland had two chances and those were slim and none. I believe that slim left the building with this devastating ruling.

Yep, the SCOTUS delivered a major blow to the last remnants of the voting act law and stretched logic to a breaking point in defining what constitutes fair access to voting.....6-3 shocking that conservatives at all levels do no think voting is important for all citizens.......

Hundreds of North Americans – and perhaps many more yet to be tallied – have died of heat-related illness over the past week after a mind-boggling heat wave struck the U.S. Pacific Northwest U.S. and far southwest Canada. It’s virtually certain to be the deadliest weather event on record for the region. The unprecedented death toll is the result of a heat onslaught more intense by some measures than anything in global records, yet very much in line with the expected impacts of a human-warmed climate.

The poster community of this horrific episode has to be Lytton, British Columbia. The town broke Canada’s longstanding all-time national high temperature of 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) with a high of 46.6°C (116°F) on Sunday, June 27. The next day brought 47.9°C (118.2°F), and Tuesday a stunning 49.6°C (121°F).

The intense heat flash-dried the rugged, forested landscape, and wildfires mushroomed across the area on Wednesday, June 30. By evening, the entire town of Lytton was under mandatory evacuation orders, and Mayor Jan Polderman told CBC News that “the whole town is on fire.” Most homes in Lytton have been destroyed, according to provincial

In the majority opinion, the word fraud appeared to be the main reason to approve the Az law....What to me is the saddest thing is that FRAUD and the big LIE have permeated the court and reluctant decision to up hold the patent discrimination exhibited by the GOP continuing grab for white power....Ths BS makes me sick knowing Trump stole 2 nominations to this biased court....I am proud of you Lil Schitty for being on the side of win any way you can.......Time will tell on who the winner really is with Trumps name involved with criminal fraud and stealing!!~!!!!!!!!!

Trump Is Preparing for the Worst
July 2, 2021 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments
David Frum:
“One of Trump’s skills as a politician is preparing the battlefield in advance. In the case of his first impeachment, he chose to argue outright innocence—‘it was a perfect call’—and no matter how mountainous the evidence of wrongdoing, that was the line he maintained to the end.

“This time, though, Trump is not claiming that ‘all taxes were paid’ or that ‘it was a perfect tax return.’ He’s readying his supporters for bad revelations about his company’s taxes and directing them to a fallback line that singling him out as a tax scofflaw is politically unfair.

“That line of defense may well rally Trump’s supporters. It will not do him much good in court.”

Vanity Fair:
Ooops. The Trump Organization kept literal spreadsheets of its crimes.

Isn't it most interesting that trump is screaming another witch hunt perpetrated by NY dems and how unfair they are to him....What is sad not once has the fraud defended his company that they would never do such deeds or would he allow it.....WONDER WHY THAT IS??????? And you idiots will all declare everyone does it and trump has been singled out.....1.7 million is a shit load of income to cook off the books in anyones world...!!!!!

Biden’s Antitrust Chair Gets Off to Aggressive Start
July 2, 2021 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 7 Comments
Politico:
“The Federal Trade Commission’s first meeting under new Chair Lina Khan broke decades of precedent Thursday by taking place in public — something unheard-of for the notably secretive antitrust and consumer protection agency. Then it pushed through a series of actions on progressive Democrats’ wish list:
Fines for companies that lie about products being ‘Made in America.’
Greater latitude for launching antitrust probes and lawsuits.
And a wider door to writing new regulations —

something else the FTC hasn’t done much of in decades.”

“All this came despite fierce objections from the commission’s two Republicans,
in a sign that partisan rancor is also back in vogue at the Biden-era FTC.”
_________

YEAH. I say, let's get it all out in the public, and get much tougher on how the rich have been unfairly taking advantage of and cheating the American middle class.

Kevin McCarthy Made a Series of BAD Choices
July 2, 2021 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 21 Comments
Punchbowl News:
“McCarthy initially objected in February to the number of GOP and Democratic seats on the proposed panel, and on how subpoenas would be issued, Pelosi agreed to his suggestions,
only to have McCarthy change his position and raise a completely different objection over the scope of the investigation.

“When Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chair of the Homeland Security Committee, cut a deal in mid-May with GOP Rep. John Katko (R-NY), ranking member on Homeland, over legislation to create a bipartisan commission,
McCarthy ended up publicly repudiating the agreement his own member made. Thirty-five House Republicans voted for the bill anyway, only to see it blocked by Senate Republicans.”

“And now with Cheney on the select committee, Pelosi has once more forced McCarthy into a tough situation.
Compared to the proposal that Thompson and Katko hashed out
— or the compromise floated by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) —
the select committee approved by the House is bad format for McCarthy and the Republicans:
*there’s no time limit on the investigation,
*Republicans have no say in who or how many subpoenas can be issued
*and Pelosi has a veto over McCarthy’s appointments.”
__________

That Nancy.
Say whatever you want about her, she sure knows how to play the Washington game.

Oh, and the family member who actually paid $1000/mo for a company apartment. Some kinda crime there too.

We don't call him dopey for nothing.

And Never has a company been charged for an employee's private tax return, which was likely prepared for him anyway.

This will be thrown out of court. And trump will no doubt sue their asses off.

Well Denny...

The does, in some ways, punish stupidity.

"Doh, I don't know where I am supposed to vote, doh"

Which of course... we all know that Republicans know where to vote and how to vote and that Democrats are just not quite that smart.

Or those voters who apparently cannot fill out or mail in their own ballots and need others to do it for them. How aghast is it that they can only rely on family, caregivers, or election officials.

The truly stupid need some Democratic vote harvester to fill it out for them.

Sorry Denny... these are perfectly reasonable laws.

The only legal or logical "stretching" being done here is by the minority dissent.

So Reverend...

the fact that the bi-partisan commission was dumped in favor of what everyone knows will be a completely partisan investigation led by Nancy Pelosi was a bad choice for McCarthy? I won't trust a thing that comes out of that commission, neither will about 2/3 of Americans.

What sort of fool believes that nonsense?

Or better yet... what sort of fool makes this argument and demands others believe it.

We still have a long road ahead, because of the mishandled covid-19 pandemic crisis.

The U.S. economy added 850,000 jobs in June as the labor market heated up after a spring lull.

The unemployment rate, derived from a separate survey of households, rose to 5.9% from 5.8%, the Labor Department said Friday, as more Americans joined the labor force.

The increase in jobs was the strongest since last August and exceeded economists’ forecasts. It followed a gain of a slightly revised 583,000 jobs in May and 269,000 in April.

Despite the latest gains, the country still has 6.8 million fewer jobs than in February 2020, the month before the pandemic shut down much of the economy.

The S@P just set a new record high.

Trump Still Bragging About Passing Cognitive Test Most People Could Easily Pass
July 2, 2021 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
Former President Donald again boasted of passing a cognitive test from 2018, bringing up the test to criticize President Joe Biden, Insider reports.

Said Trump: “Did I ace it? I aced it. And I’d like to see Biden ace it. He won’t ace it.”

He added: “He will get the first two. There are 35 questions and the first two or three are pretty easy. They are the animals. This is a lion, a giraffe. When he gets to around 20, he’s gonna have a little hard time. I think he’s gonna have a hard time with the first few, actually."

Although Trump has touted the three-year-old result as proof of his brilliance, it is in fact a basic screening process for evidence of cognitive problems. The vast majority of people would be expected to easily pass.

“The Biden administration is introducing an unprecedented effort to encourage eligible immigrants to apply for US citizenship,” CNN reports.

“That includes, for example,
holding naturalization ceremonies at national parks to raise awareness,
partnering with the US Postal Service to display promotional posters at Postal Service facilities about becoming a US citizen,
and engaging with the Department of Veterans Affairs and veteran service organizations
to find ways to educate service members and veterans on citizenship.”

Not in the current sense. You have to save and invest to build net worth. Another way is to have your ancestors save and invest wisely. There are quite lot of black millionaires today that have started and successfully run their own business. Not all of them play basketball for a living.
