WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday declined to take up the case of a florist who refused to provide services for a same-sex wedding, leaving in place a decision that she broke state anti-discrimination laws.
tices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch said they would have agreed to hear the case and review the decision. Four justices are needed for the court to take a case.

In 2018 the high court ordered Washington state courts to take a new look at the case involving florist Barronelle Stutzman and her Arlene's Flowers business. That followed the justices’ decision in a different case involving a Colorado baker who declined to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

After that review, the Washington Supreme Court ruled unanimously that state courts did not act with animosity toward religion when they ruled Stutzman broke the state’s anti-discrimination laws by refusing on religious grounds to provide flowers for the wedding of Rob Ingersoll and Curt Freed.

The earliest Christians were “common-ists.” No, not communists – not modern atheistic Marxists – but followers of Jesus who sought to practice his teachings by sharing “everything in common. They would sell their property and possessions to give to anyone who had need… No one claimed private ownership of any of their possessions, but everything they owned was held in common” (Acts 2:44,45; 4:23).

One reason Christian believers in Jerusalem could observe so communal and socialistic a practice was their conviction that the return of Jesus was going to take place within a very short time, bringing the blessings of God’s Kingdom to all the earth. As the years wore on, however, and Jesus’ immediate return failed to materialize, churches founded in Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy relaxed such stringent requirements for membership.

Still, as late as a quarter century after Jesus’ crucifixion, the Apostle Paul, writing to the Christians in Corinth, could assure them that “the present form of the world is passing away” and the return of Jesus was now so very near, he said, that they might want to consider abstaining from sex within marriage and even from marrying itself (!) in order to prepare themselves spiritually for Jesus’ imminent return (1st Corinthians chapter 7; Paul’s certainty about the nearness of Jesus’ return can probably be attributed to a statement by Jesus that not all his original followers would die before he came back: Mark 9:1; compare Matthew 16:28).

Of course, Jesus could be exceedingly demanding and envisioned an imminent godly Kingdom on earth in which there would be neither wealth nor poverty (Luke 6:20-26) and in which no one would attempt to rule over or take advantage of others, but all would strive toward being loving servants, even slaves, of one another, as he himself felt tasked to be, even to the point of dying for the sake of the vast “many” (Mark 10:42-45; Isaiah 53:11-12).

In the political turmoil of today, it is regrettable that so many who claim allegiance to Jesus adamantly oppose any form of “common-ism,” even when practiced by democratic societies. It is disheartening to have to admit that several nations in our world today are far more responsive to Jesus’ communal teachings than are many American politicians who seem hell-bent on creating a government dedicated to pursuing the selfish greed they wish to impose on all the rest of us.

Trump Appears to Acknowledge Tax Schemes
July 4, 2021 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Former president Donald Trump lashed out at Manhattan prosecutors Saturday night for indicting his organization and its chief financial officer for tax fraud, calling it ‘prosecutorial misconduct’ in his most extensive comments on the charges since they were unsealed Thursday,” the Washington Post reports.

“As Trump criticized the investigation, he appeared to acknowledge the tax schemes while questioning whether the alleged violations were in fact crimes.”

Said Trump: “They go after good, hard-working people for not paying taxes on a company car. You didn’t pay tax on the car or a company apartment. You used an apartment because you need an apartment because you have to travel too far where your house is. You didn’t pay tax. Or education for your grandchildren. I don’t even know. Do you have to? Does anybody know the answer to that stuff?”

Biden Gets High Marks for Handling Pandemic
July 4, 2021 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 39 Comments
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 62% of Americans say they approve of the job President Biden has done in dealing with the pandemic, almost identical to findings in April as he neared the end of his first 100 days in office.

His overall approval stands at 50% positive and 42% negative, figures that are also virtually the same as in April.

One low mark for the president comes on the issue of immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, where 33% of Americans say they approve of how he is handling the issue, amid a surge of migrants attempting to cross into the country.

Lincoln and Ford: July Fourth Should Bring Us Together
COMMENTARY By John Cribb July 04, 2021

In five years, on July 4, 2026, Americans will observe the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, a milestone that carries a somewhat awkward name: the semiquincentennial.

Those old enough to remember our nation’s 200th birthday in 1976 know the bicentennial was a months-long celebration full of parades, fireworks, and tall ships. The country had recently struggled through the Vietnam War, Watergate, recession, and an energy crisis, but Americans came together to pay tribute to the American Revolution.

As Gerald Ford observed in Philadelphia on Independence Day 1976, it was a time for “both pride and humility, rejoicing and reverence,” a day to reflect that, for our nation’s founders, “when liberty was at stake, they were willing to pay the price.”

If we don’t watch it, we may be headed toward something quite different in 2026.

The last few years have brought arguments that the American founding wasn’t so great after all and that the founders were just a bunch of old white men who talked about freedom but instituted slavery and racism.

Some students are being taught that the real founding was not 1776 but 1619, the year the first enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia. A National Archives task force recently cited the Archives’ own rotunda, where the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and other founding documents are displayed, as an example of “structural racism.”

If this line of thinking wins the day, 2026 will be a year-long scowling at America’s past. That would be wrong, not only because our country deserves better, but because a nation that learns to loathe itself is in deep trouble.

What to do? Abraham Lincoln offered some excellent guidance in a speech he gave in Chicago in July 1858, just a few weeks before the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. He used the occasion to give his thoughts on the founding, the Declaration of Independence, and the importance of celebrating July Fourth.

Lincoln never hesitated to address head-on the issue of slavery and the founding. He explained that the founders knew slavery was wrong, but they did not believe they could fight a war against one of the greatest military powers on earth, launch a new nation, hold 13 new states together, and get rid of slavery all at the same time. It was too large a task.

What they could and did do, however, was lay down principles in the Declaration of Independence that spelled the doom of slavery—the ideals that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The declaration of those principles, coming at a time when the vast majority of people on earth lived with little or no freedom, was a magnificent step forward. For the first time in history, a nation was created out of the idea that all should be free and govern themselves.

Those founding principles were a promise. They stood, and still stand, as beacons for the country to move toward.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

In one sense, the founding was thus tragically flawed by slavery. In another sense, it was the glorious start of a long journey that has brought hope and freedom to millions.

Lincoln knew the founders were far from perfect, but he also knew they were an extraordinary generation of leaders, perhaps the most extraordinary in history. He called them “iron men” and saw much to admire in them.

He pointed out that few of us are descended by blood from those founders, but we are all their descendants in that we have inherited the ideals they fought for. “That is the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together,” Lincoln said, “that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.”

Lincoln knew Fourth of July celebrations are part of the glue that holds us together. They remind us of how difficult it was to establish the principles underlying our democracy and win the liberty we enjoy. They help us, Lincoln said, “feel more attached to one another, and more firmly bound to the country we inhabit.”

In other words, the Fourth of July builds patriotism, love of country.

If they were here today, Abraham Lincoln and Jerry Ford would no doubt both say let’s have a grand semiquincentennial party in 2026. And they would no doubt push back hard against the idea that the American founding was anything but a miracle.

Americans need to do the same in their children’s schools, on college campuses, in town halls and in legislatures. We need to push back hard against the narrative that America’s history is mainly a story of racism and oppression.

Despite its faults and sins—and some of them, like slavery, have been grave—the American record stands tall. It is a brilliant, unparalleled story.

It is still true, as Gerald Ford said on Independence Day 1976, that “the United States today remains the most successful realization of humanity's universal hope.”

Five years from now, let’s come together for a joyful 250th birthday celebration full of patriotism and pride. We can start by lighting a candle this Fourth of July and remembering just how blessed we all are to live here.

Reverend...

This is very very simple.

There is no precedent for this sort of charge.

Nobody else has been charged with a crime for this situation in spite of everyone doing it.

So there are legitimate questions if this is "selective" prosecution of something that is generally just a civil issue where the IRS would make you pay the taxes.

But hey... if it gets you a boner that a corrupt DA is charging someone for a crime JUST because he is associated with Trump, then everything we argue about you and your ilk is 100% true.

BWAAAAAAPAAAAAA!!!! Tax evasion asshole???????? God your desperation is palpable and amusing!!!!!!! The excuse everyone does it is trumpian!!!!!! Amazing trump cannot say anything but witch hunt.....does not defend the company or the CFO.....very sad you keep falling for a lying cheating business man with ZERO morals......idiot

Myballs said...

Ch is correct. I've worked in executive compensation. For a corporate CFO likely making close to $1M per year, the reporting details of such minor benefits as company car or an apartment where $1000/mo was actually paid is far from any fraud scheme. And he most likely had his tax return prepared For him as well.

And further, no company has ever been charged like this for such a minor debatable tax issue on an employee's personal tax return. This is entirely malicious prosecution. It will be dismissed and James and Vance will be sued for it.

Well Denny...

Guess you are just not bright enough to understand.

The argument is not that nobody has ever been charged with "tax evasion". Just that nobody has been charged with a "tax evasion" charge for failure to report these sorts of benefits as income.

I actually suspect that both you and the Reverend probably do understand this, but still feel it's perfectly acceptable for a DA to take political considerations into play when charging someone. TDS!

I've already said it many times.

I've worked in executive compensation. This is a irs tax audit issue. Tbey send a letter saying they thibk you owe some taxes. I myself got one earlier this year for a DCRA deduction in 2018.

These charges are for minor benefits for a guy likely making a million per year. And they're about his personal tax returns. Not the company's. Its bogus charges about a nonexistent 'tax scheme'.

While attempting to deny the claim, [General Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff]  actually did everything to confirm it was true while also insisting he wanted to understand “white rage,” a concept invented by left-wing extremists as part of Critical Race Theory to denigrate white people.

As we highlighted last week, Nellis Air Force base responded to controversy about a drag queen show hosted by the base by saying the performance was “essential to the morale, cohesion, and readiness of the military.”

Attempts by the woke cult to subvert the military began under the Obama administration, during which in some instances cadets were made to take part in an event called Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, which sought to raise awareness for sexual assault victims by having men wearing Army Combat Uniforms parade around in red high heels.

We, as Americans, believe fundamentally and accept as self-evident, that all are created equal. We believe governments may govern justly only if they derive their powers from the consent of the governed. Those truths define who we are. And lovers of a drug addicted black man and the greatest generation survivors oppose each of them and mean to deprive us of them, the truths stand in their simple yet profound honesty and tug dearly at our hearts because, if we are honest, we know them to be true, undeniable, and eternal. Moreover, through experience we know they have proven their superiority over every dogma offered to justify the denial of individual rights, freedom of choice, and pursuit of individual happiness.

26 USC 7201
Any person who willfully attempts in any manner to evade or defeat any tax imposed by this title or the payment thereof shall, in addition to other penalties provided by law, be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than $100,000 ($500,000 in the case of a corporation), or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.

tion 7201 creates two offenses: (a) the willful attempt to evade or defeat the assessment of a tax, and (b) the willful attempt to evade or defeat the payment of a tax. Sansone v. United States, 380 U.S. 343, 354 (1965). See also, United States v. Shoppert, 362 F.3d 451, 454 (8th Cir.), cert. denied, 543 U.S. 911 (2004); United States v. Mal, 942 F. 2d 682, 687-88 (9th Cir. 1991) (if a defendant transfers assets to prevent the I.R.S. from determining his true tax liability, he has attempted to evade assessment; if he does so after a tax liability has become due and owing, he has attempted to evade payment). [a] Evasion of assessment.

The most common attempt to evade or defeat a tax is the affirmative act of filing a false return that omits income and/or claims deductions to which the taxpayer is not entitled. The tax reported on the return is falsely understated and creates a deficiency. Consequently, such willful under reporting constitutes an attempt to evade or defeat tax by evading the correct assessment of the tax. [b] Evasion of payment.

“You’ll have to ask the Rothschilds that,” she said. “But it can’t be anything good.”

Complaining that the use of the Hebraic lasers had gone unchecked, she blasted the Biden Administration for its inaction on what she called “the No. 1 threat to our national security.”

The maximum permissible fine is $250,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations. 1-1.02 Generally [1] Two kinds of tax evasion. Section 7201 creates two offenses: (a) the willful attempt to evade or defeat the assessment of a tax, and (b) the willful attempt to evade or defeat the payment of a tax. Sansone v. United States, 380 U.S. 343, 354 (1965). See also, United States v. Shoppert, 362 F.3d 451, 454 (8th Cir.), cert. denied, 543 U.S. 911 (2004); United States v. The tax reported on the return is falsely understated and creates a deficiency. Consequently, such willful under reporting constitutes an attempt to evade or defeat tax by evading the correct assessment of the tax. [b] Evasion of payment.

This offense generally occurs after the existence of a tax due and owing has been established (either by the taxpayer reporting the amount of tax or by the I.R.S. assessing the amount of tax deemed to be due and owing) and almost always involves an affirmative act of concealment of money or assets from which the tax could be paid. As discussed in Section 1-1.04 below, it is not essential that the I.R.S. have made a formal assessment of taxes owed and a demand for payment in order for tax evasion charges to be brought. Tax deficiency can arise by operation of law when there is a failure to file and the government later determines the tax liability. United States v. Daniel, 956 F.2d 540, 542 (6th Cir. 1992).”

In the current Republican party, Abraham Lincoln would be called a RINO.

Lincoln opposed nativism throughout his political career. He was an early and vocal critic of Know-Nothingism. In a letter to a friend in 1855, Lincoln declared, “When the Know-Nothings get control, [the Declaration of Independence] will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.’” Lincoln made support of immigration, along with opposition to slavery, one of the themes of his losing campaign to replace incumbent Illinois Sen. Stephen Douglas. In one of his famous debates with Douglas in 1858,
Lincoln noted that the Declaration of Independence’s guarantee of freedom belonged to immigrants as much as to the native born: “They have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood and flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration, and so they are.” When he sought the nomination of the newly formed Republican party, Lincoln supported inclusion of a plank in the party’s platform that pledged that naturalized citizens’ rights would not be abridged in any way and that their rights be protected both at home and abroad. In his first address to Congress after being elected president, Lincoln called for legislation to increase immigration, which resulted in subsequent passage of “An Act to Encourage Immigration.” Lincoln signed it into law on July 4, 1864.

In early 1861, as he traveled from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration, Lincoln summed up his views on immigration at a stop in Cincinnati where he spoke to a group of German-born Americans: “If there are any abroad who desire to make this the land of their adoption, it is not in my heart to throw aught in their way, to prevent them from coming to the United States.” If we really believe in the promise of America, we should take Lincoln’s words to heart. A great nation does not close itself off from the world. It welcomes those who will make it even greater.

Unless you are a native American, you are an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants.

The current Republican party is afraid of being replaced!
