Even now, Biden is slightly above water in approval.

And Trump's "honeymoon" never even started:

Cutting Jobless Benefits Had Little Impact on Unemployment
August 20, 2021 at 1:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Politico:
“Only eight of the 26 states that ended federal jobless benefits early saw a statistically significant drop in unemployment in July, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data out Friday. Nine states and the District of Columbia that did not end the benefits also saw statistically significant drops in unemployment, muddying the waters as economists, policymakers and labor advocates are searching for any indication of the ramifications of some governors’ decision to cut off emergency unemployment insurance before its Sept. 6 expiration date.”

Related from New York Times:
“When states began cutting off federal unemployment benefits this summer, their governors argued that the move would push people to return to work. New research suggests that ending the benefits did indeed lead some people to get jobs, but that far more people did not, leaving them — and perhaps also their states’ economies — worse off.”

Texas Lt. Governor Blames African-Americans for Covid Surge
August 20, 2021 at 4:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
NBC News:
“Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said unvaccinated African Americans — not lax coronavirus precautions in states like his — are responsible for the surge in Covid-19 cases in his state.”

Said Patrick: “The Covid is spreading, particularly most of the numbers are with the unvaccinated, and the Democrats like to blame Republicans on that. Well, the biggest group in most states are African Americans who have not been vaccinated. Last time I checked, over 90 percent of them vote for Democrats in their major cities and major counties, so it’s up to the Democrats.

ProPublica:
“A new report this week by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction also reveals the depths of failure of the United States’ entire 20-year, $145 billion effort to reconstruct (or construct, in some cases) Afghanistan’s civil society.

“The efforts to create a new government and military from scratch were overly ambitious. They failed to consider the needs and abilities of Afghans. There was a disregard for learning from past mistakes.

“And the goals were far too ‘pie in the sky’ for one of the world’s poorest nations, a country still racked by violence.”

CDC Eviction Ban Likely Headed to Supreme Court
August 20, 2021 at 4:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Associated Press:
“A federal appeals court on Friday allowed the pause on evictions imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remain in place, setting up a likely battle before the nation’s highest court.

“A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected a bid by Alabama and Georgia realtors to block the eviction moratorium reinstated earlier this month.

“The realtors are likely to appeal to the Supreme Court, which voted 5-4 in June to allow the moratorium to continue through the end of July. But Justice Brett Kavanaugh — who joined the majority — warned the administration not to act further without explicit congressional approval.”

The Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt outside a door of the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot has been formally exonerated after an internal investigation, according to a department memo obtained by NBC News.

The officer, whose name has not been released, opened fire on Babbitt as she and a mob of other Trump supporters tried to forcefully enter the Capitol.

Video of the shooting showed Babbitt in front of a crowd of rioters trying to get through a door leading to where members of Congress were being evacuated on the House side of the building.

The Justice Department announced in April that no charges were being brought against the officer. The exoneration by the Capitol Police wraps up the last remaining investigation into the incident.

Taliban to Face Cash Crunch Ruling Afghanistan
August 20, 2021 at 6:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Associated Press:
“Despite their dominant military blitz over the past week, the Taliban lack access to billions of dollars from their central bank and the International Monetary Fund that would keep the country running during a turbulent shakeup. Those funds are largely controlled by the U.S. and international institutions, a possible leverage point as tense evacuations proceed from the airport in the capital of Kabul.

“As of now, the Taliban government cannot access almost all of the Afghanistan central bank’s $9 billion in reserves, most of which is held by the New York Federal Reserve.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Biden is right that ending this conflict was always going to be a bloody, depressing mess. Maybe it’s more of a mess than it might have been in a perfect world — but it was always going to be a difference of degree, not kind. It’s one of those cliches that’s true: power really does abhor a vacuum, and, since the Trump agreement was reached, the vacuum in Afghanistan was fast intensifying. When a regime knows its time is going to be up soon, and its leaders are not as determined to keep power as insurgents are to seize it, things can collapse very, very quickly. If our military leaders did not get this, they are as useless now as they have been for the past 20 years.

The distinction between the US-puppet regime and the Taliban is a simple one: while the Kabul authorities were sustained by money and weakly-held Western concepts, the Taliban were gripped with medieval zeal and their own religion. And zeal can beat the most formidable military machine ever built. The other difference is that the Taliban were actually more efficient and less corrupt than the US-backed government. Here’s a slice of reality from The Economist over a year ago:

Sitting on a dusty rug beside their lorries at the edge of Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second city, a group of middle-aged drivers explain the difference between the Taliban and the government. Both groups take money from drivers on the road, says Muhammad Akram, leaning forward in a black kurta; both are violent. But when the Taliban stop him at a checkpoint, they write him a receipt. Waving a fistful of green papers, he explains how they ensure he won’t be charged twice: after he pays one group of Talibs, his receipt gets him through subsequent stops. Government soldiers, in contrast, rob him over and over. When he drives from Herat, a city near the Iranian border, to Kandahar, Mr Akram says, he will pay the Taliban once. Government soldiers he will pay at least 30 times.

And we wonder why it all fell apart so quickly.

The mullahs also had plenty of time and all the leverage to prepare for the moment of truth. We had other things on our plate — like a pandemic and an attempt to violently disrupt the transfer of power at home. We were, it seems, lecturing the Afghans on democracy as our own was teetering on the brink of disintegration — perhaps the very definition of an over-stretched empire. We were pouring trillions of dollars (all borrowed) into rebuilding a distant wilderness as our own streets and bridges were crumbling — another definition of imperial decline.

.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

And the truth is: we were never going to be as committed to the fate of Afghanistan as the Afghans are. America is not a colonial power in its DNA, and it shows. And if we are to project power abroad, it might behoove us to shore up our strength at home first. Over-extended, hollowed-out, debt-burdened empires are not exactly intimidating to many enemies. Leaving Afghanistan is therefore not the blow to American power and prestige these pundits are claiming. Staying in Afghanistan is.

And violent regime collapse is always chaotic. When the US began to withdraw from Iraq, Isis swept in with stunning speed, as the will to resist crumbled. Whenever colonial or neo-colonial powers end an occupation, it is never pretty. Look at Africa or Palestine or India after the British withdrew. Bloody tribal catastrophe — with millions dead. In comparison, Afghanistan’s return to self-rule is rather tame so far. There was never going to be a smooth or orderly transition; or any result that didn’t bring the religious fanatics back to power. Never. If the last few days do not persuade the pious think-tankers and Blob stenographers of that, they are a lost cause. The least they can do as we witness the end of their delusional disaster of two decades is to shut up.

This isn’t easy. But geopolitics never is. It requires terrible moral choices. It demands serious acceptance of the costs of failure — not this jumped-up media hysteria. It requires taking responsibility ourselves, and not hounding the one man who actually took it, with all its political costs.

I mean: how many of us were closely following developments in Afghanistan this spring? How many read any stories about the place? How many segments did CNN devote to Afghanistan in June and July? And how many of us who cheered the original invasion have been able to acknowledge candidly how deeply wrong we were since, and retain a modicum of humility and shame as we watch the inevitable end of our own hubristic dreams?

Not many. But then we are not a very grown-up country these days. Mercifully, we have a president who is. Who did the right thing, when others refused to. And who is mercifully not backing down

All the way back, we never learned. It has been a failure from day one.

This has been a twenty year $1.5 billion dollar disaster caused by doddering politicians who had no idea how to deal with the Afghan situation. The idea that we could nation build or reconstruct their society, or create a new government and military for them was as naive as it gets.

And when Trump in, he made things worse by inviting the Taliban to Camp David and when that didn't work out, by insisting to negotiate with the Taliban alone and leave out the Afghani leadership. It doesn't get any dumber than that. That's when we lost the support of so many of their soldiers.

We committed some of the same mistakes we made in Vietnam, trying to support a corrupt regime that never gained the support of the majority of their people by failing to meet their needs or cut back on the corruption roiling them. There was a despicable disregard for learning from our past mistakes.

I hate to admit it, but I think this article in The Atlantic may have it right.

Biden Is Betting Americans Will Forget About Afghanistan
People in and around the White House are relying on Americans’ notoriously short-term memory.

By Peter Nicholas
Call it the white house’s dream scenario: In the end, the voters don’t blame Joe Biden. The president’s withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan simply aligns him with everyone else who has given up on the notion that the military could mold a fractious country into a stable democratic ally. The administration is hoping that grisly images of desperate Afghans clinging to a C-17 fade, replaced by collective relief that no more Americans will die in a murky, brutal war that spanned two decades and four presidencies.

Despite the Taliban’s rapid takeover of Afghanistan, White House officials and people close to Biden don’t foresee his decision hurting Democrats in next year’s midterm elections, nor in the presidential race that follows. Their argument is that the nation should be reassured that a president who vowed during the 2020 campaign to end “forever wars” made good on the promise.

Will it work? Biden’s allies are betting so.

“A big majority of the American people want us out of Afghanistan,” Ted Kaufman, a Biden confidant since the 1970s and a former Democratic senator from Delaware, told me this week. “And that will be a key message—the key point for the American people is our troops are out,” he said. “It’s fine for us to sit in Washington and talk about what’s wrong in Afghanistan. We’re not bearing the brunt of this war. It’s another thing if you have a son or daughter or father over there.”

Biden’s handling of the biggest foreign-policy crisis on his watch to date is unfolding on two tracks: short- and long-term.

In recent days, the White House has privately sent talking points to supporters that sought to blunt the ferocious backlash over the Taliban victory by deflecting responsibility onto a useful target. On his way out the door, Donald Trump left Biden with two bad choices: *“indefinite war in Afghanistan”
or
*a troop drawdown and potential Taliban victory....

Looking ahead, Biden’s team is focused on preventing any revival of a terrorist threat from Afghanistan. His national-security team said it is better positioned to quash terrorism emanating from nations with no U.S. military presence than was the case 20 years ago, when Osama bin Laden oversaw the 9/11 attacks from his sanctuary in Afghanistan. But if an attack happens on Biden’s watch, one of his campaign fundraisers said, Americans won’t necessarily rally behind a president who left Afghanistan in the hands of extremists. A natural reaction among voters will be, “We didn’t want you in Afghanistan, but you should have kept this from happening and now there are dead Americans, and you have to explain that, and you have to go to their funeral,” said this person, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk more freely.

The cable networks are showing chaos, tears, and dead bodies on an airport tarmac, yet some of the living are already writing the scenes off as “the cost of war.” Afghanistan was a war that Americans have clearly wanted to end for a while. In a poll taken 10 years ago, voters largely predicted the messy outcome that’s unfolding today. More than 70 percent believed that the U.S. would eventually withdraw its troops and leave Afghanistan without a functioning democratic government.

A Quinnipiac survey in May found that by a margin of 62 percent to 29 percent, Americans approved of Biden’s plan to pull out all troops. Military households approved by a 23-point margin: 59 percent to 36 percent.

“I don’t believe Americans are going to evaluate Joe Biden on whether Afghanistan is a stable democracy,” Jeff Horwitt, a Democratic pollster with Hart Research, told me. “They’re much more focused on whether America is a stable democracy. And, sad to say, we have our work to do there these days as well.”

It would be right if Biden hadn't fucked it all up so much. No one will forget this now.

Two weeks ago, only two or three children a day would come into Dr. Nick Hysmith’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, with Covid-19, usually ones who were admitted for other reasons, like broken bones.

This week, he is seeing as many as 28 children under 18 a day, some of them landing in the intensive care unit.

Around the country, child hospitalizations for Covid-19 have increased to levels not seen since January, when U.S. cases and deaths were at their highest levels, according to the latest government data. Doctors in the hospitals hardest hit by the recent surge say the situation is worse than it was in January.

It happened fast: As of Wednesday, U.S. hospitals were tending to an average of more than 1,200 children a day, twice the number from the end of July and four times from the start of July, according to an NBC News analysis of data released this week by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The data show the U.S. facing another peak in child hospitalizations as the delta variant of the coronavirus hits communities hesitant to get vaccinated. And while unvaccinated adults are filling ICUs in parts of the South, minors in those areas are filling up the pediatric wings at an alarming pace.

Air Force Academy Forces Students to Watch Pro-BLM Video

By Eric Lendrum

August 20, 2021

The newest class of cadets at the United States Air Force Academy, as part of their education, are being forced to watch a video that is supportive of the far-left domestic terrorist organization Black Lives Matter, Fox News reports.

The video in question portrays a fictional situation where a mixed-race student named Jose, who has a Nigerian mother and a Mexican father, is pressured into attending a Black Lives Matter rally on his campus by two of his friends. A third friend tries to convince him to not go, instead suggesting that “all lives matter” is a better slogan, since “black lives matter” would suggest to Jose that his mother’s life matters more than his father’s.

X

At that point, the video is to be paused by the instructor, and students are asked to choose from three different answers that Jose should give; every single answer is critical of the friend and supportive of Black Lives Matter, and in any case, Jose responds by saying that his friend’s comments are “problematic” and “insensitive.”

It was confirmed by the Academy’s Chief of Media Relations, Dean Miller, that the video is, in fact, “required training for inbound cadets (appointees) ahead of their arrival to the U.S. Air Force Academy.” The video is part of the broader far-left initiative by the Biden Administration to implement “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) training throughout the United States Armed Forces. DEI is one of several branches of the broader notion of Critical Race Theory, the debunked claim that all White people are automatically racist, and that America is an inherently racist nation. That is 100% insane.

After facing growing backlash over multiple similar trainings across different branches, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin lied under oath before Congress and claimed that the Department of Defense does not “teach,” “embrace,” or otherwise support Critical Race Theory. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley has claimed that he doesn’t even know what Critical Race Theory is, but reaffirmed that he supports the idea nevertheless.

Teaching black children about our dark past and its impact on the laws that eliminated racial discrimination will cause them to hate white people who opposed them, and become socialist, and destroy capitalism, according to the right wing suitcase.

Dan Berschinski is a retired U.S. Army infantry officer. He served and was severely wounded in Afghanistan in 2009.
When the twin towers fell, I was a high school senior deep in college applications. The United States Military Academy topped my list. Watching the devastation of Sept. 11, 2001, unfold, I knew the Army would be part of the response, though I figured that response would be over by the time I graduated from West Point. Never did I imagine that, eight years later, I would be leading soldiers in a war provoked by that one terrible day.
Yet lead them I did, across Afghanistan, witnessing horrors and enduring losses I still struggle to describe. What I saw there convinced me that the awful scenes we are now witnessing were inevitable — and that President Biden deserves credit for nonetheless braving the fallout to do the right thing by our troops.
I saw early warning signs as a U.S. Army infantry platoon leader on my first mission in Kandahar in 2009. In my very first conversation with a local, a shopkeeper told me: “Lieutenant, I met the previous American lieutenant 12 months prior, I will meet another American lieutenant in 12 months when you leave.” He did not like the Taliban, the shopkeeper told me, but it would be in Afghanistan long after I would — and so he had no choice but to deal with it.
If that first mission diminished my hopes for the United States’ success in Afghanistan, my last dashed them entirely. On Aug. 18, 2009, two days before a national election, I was supposed to partner with Afghan army forces to reconnoiter local polling sites. As I walked across our base that morning, I learned that my Afghan partners had fled overnight. They did not want to risk their lives to protect their own polling sites.
Instead of reconning the polling sites by ourselves, my soldiers and I patrolled some nearby orchards. Within ten hours, Sergeant Troy Tom, a 21-year-old from Shiprock, N.M., was killed by an improvised explosive device. My forward observer, Specialist Jonathan Yanney, 20, of Litchfield, Minn., was also killed by an IED. Several hours later I, too, stepped on an IED trigger. But my bomb was small. Instead of killing me, it only severed both of my legs above the knees.
For 20 years, at a cost of 2,448 American lives and more than 1 trillion taxpayer dollars, we attempted to do what the shopkeeper knew we could not: outlast the Taliban. We built schools and hospitals; we trained, paid and supplied the Afghan military. In exchange, we got an Afghan army that laid down its weapons and government leadership that fled the country. By pursuing this full-scale nation-building effort, rather than a small-scale counterterror operation, we gave up what little advantage we ever had over the Taliban. As they are fond of saying, “[America] may have all the watches, but [the Taliban] have all the time.”
Am I angry that my fellow soldiers gave lives and limbs for an effort that is clearly ending in defeat? Of course. But I am even angrier that our nation’s leaders ignored reality and insisted for two decades that the war was headed in the right direction. Nearly a score of different generals in charge of the war effort, and three presidential administrations, chose to extend an unsustainable status quo rather than acknowledge hard truths. None of them faced any consequences.

Now, in Biden, we finally have a president who won’t be cowed into inaction by the threat of political damage. Earlier this week, he asked: “How many more generations of America’s daughters and sons would you have me send to fight Afghanistan’s civil war when Afghan troops will not?” Because he is unwilling to simply say “more,” he is being unfairly vilified.

The present difficulties aren't going to matter as time goes on because most Americans agree that it was right to get out of Afghanistan after twenty years of war and American sacrifice both in terms of wealth and blood.

We should have seen the handwriting on the wall a long time ago and Trump made a big blunder in thinking he could negotiate a peace with the Taliban independently of the Afghan government. That was naive and stupid beyond words.

This turned into America’s longest war, stretching through four presidencies, and none of those presidents found a way to disengage successfully.

Biden was right to get us out of there.

That would require a hell of a lot more men deployed in a vulnerable position at a civilian airport without air support.

Biden expected to spend weekend in Delaware, away from White House amid Afghanistan crisis

President Biden is once again scheduled to head home to Delaware Saturday, as thousands of Americans and Afghan allies remain stranded in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover last weekend.

The White House announced that Biden would leave for Wilmington around midday following a meeting with his national security team to get updated on the situation. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was traveling to Southeast Asia, is expected to attend virtually.

As of late Friday evening, Biden had no public events scheduled for Saturday or Sunday.
