"The decision to place a higher priority on a political promise than on the lives of innocent men, women and children is a stain on America's reputation and undermines our credibility around the world."
Biden may be right that history will judge his overall decision as prudent. But even some of his fellow Democrats have been highly critical of the operation. Some Democrats see a tragic failure to plan for the aftermath.
Before Biden spoke, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., said he would demand to know "why we weren't better prepared for a worst-case scenario involving such a swift and total collapse of the Afghan government and security forces."
Democratic strategist Chris Kofinis, who visited Afghanistan as a Senate aide in 2011, said Biden should clean house.
"President Biden's team failed him across the board," Kofinis said. "Not only should his national security adviser and his secretary of state be fired immediately, but anyone who let this national disgrace happen should be fired. ... Biden either makes immediate changes or he may not have much of a presidency left after this."
White House officials, aware of frustration among Democrats, circulated talking points to members of Congress before Biden's speech. Lawmakers, who will face voters before the next presidential election, keep a close eye on polls. And there are some indications that once-overwhelming support for a withdrawal among the public has dissipated.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll conducted Friday through Monday found that backing for a withdrawal had fallen from 69 percent to 49 percent among registered voters since April, with only 25 percent saying the removal of U.S. forces is going well.
Even as he said he took responsibility for the decision, Biden blamed the outcome of the Taliban takeover on political leaders in Afghanistan and its military.
"Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves," he said, arguing that the U.S. shouldn't sacrifice any more lives in their defense.
Such an America-first approach has proved popular with voters in recent elections, but Biden's execution of the withdrawal has left him open to criticism of the competence he campaigned on. And not just from the usual suspects.
Washington Post publisher Fred Ryan pleaded with the Biden administration Monday to help evacuate journalists and their families from Afghanistan as the Taliban took control of the capital, Kabul.
Ryan emailed national security adviser Jake Sullivan with the subject line "Urgent re safety of US Journalists."
"Jake, Urgent request on behalf of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post is to have our 204 journalists, support staff and families transported by US Military from the civilian side of the Kabul airport to the military side of the airport where they can be safe as they await evacuation flights," Ryan said in the email seen by NBC News.
Journalists at the three papers are "currently in danger" and "need the US government to get them to safety," he said. "Please advise as to how best to proceed."

Now obviously not "all" civilians that didn't want to live under Taliban rule could have been evacuated. But there were many who were directly involved in Afghan government that could have and should have been evacuated. But we also had other options available to us that had been part of the original plan. We had the ability to continue to provide air cover and such for the Afghan forces (which at one time had been promised). We obviously could have secured our own equipment. We had even talked about still leaving some limited force behind for tactical reasons.
Instead we ran like rats fleeing a sinking ship. There was no actual rush or hurry here? Why the impulsive move to get it all done yesterday?

The Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus appears to be breaking through the protection vaccines provide at a higher rate than previous strains, a Wall Street Journal analysis found, though infections among the fully inoculated remain a tiny fraction of overall cases, and symptoms tend to be milder.
U.S. states counted at least 193,204 so-called breakthrough cases among vaccinated people between Jan. 1 and early August, according to data that health departments in 44 states and Washington, D.C., provided to the Journal. The figure represents 0.1% of the more than 136 million fully vaccinated people in those states and the capital.
The total number of breakthrough cases is likely higher, public-health experts said, because fully vaccinated people with asymptomatic infections likely aren’t getting tested for Covid-19. Additionally, several states said the data were unavailable, while others track only breakthrough cases that result in hospitalizations or death.

Nope... Biden had all the time in the world to "get it right". We had been there for 20 years, we had zero casualties since March of 2020 in Afghanistan and less than 100 since 2014. We have more casualties in some American military bases than that.
There was actually zero reason for this to be done without even feigning that they were thinking it through.
There is no reason you can provide that Biden was under some timeline to make sure everyone was out before evacuations, or gathering of intelligence and equipment.
Let's be clear. Biden has reversed every single Trump decision (generally to negative consequences) so it would have been par for the course to ignore whatever Trump had negotiated or agreed upon in Afghanistan. Even a Sept 11th timeline was artificial.

It seems that liberals and Democrats have less problem with Islamic law, sexual slavery, and summary execution of gays, than they do with Christianity being peacefully practiced in the United States.

Can anyone even imagine taking out our Military before evacuating civilians and others who have been good to our Country and who should be allowed to seek refuge? In addition, these people left topflight and highly sophisticated equipment. Who can believe such incompetence? Under my Administration, all civilians and equipment would have been removed.
Now obviously not "all" civilians that didn't want to live under Taliban rule could have been evacuated. But there were many who were directly involved in Afghan government that could have and should have been evacuated. But we also had other options available to us that had been part of the original plan. We had the ability to continue to provide air cover and such for the Afghan forces (which at one time had been promised). We obviously could have secured our own equipment. We had even talked about still leaving some limited force behind for tactical reasons.
Instead we ran like rats fleeing a sinking ship. There was no actual rush or hurry here? Why the impulsive move to get it all done yesterday?

The Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus appears to be breaking through the protection vaccines provide at a higher rate than previous strains, a Wall Street Journal analysis found, though infections among the fully inoculated remain a tiny fraction of overall cases, and symptoms tend to be milder.
U.S. states counted at least 193,204 so-called breakthrough cases among vaccinated people between Jan. 1 and early August, according to data that health departments in 44 states and Washington, D.C., provided to the Journal. The figure represents 0.1% of the more than 136 million fully vaccinated people in those states and the capital.
The total number of breakthrough cases is likely higher, public-health experts said, because fully vaccinated people with asymptomatic infections likely aren’t getting tested for Covid-19. Additionally, several states said the data were unavailable, while others track only breakthrough cases that result in hospitalizations or death.

Biden delayed the withdrawal, set no new milestones and let the Taliban (probably with help from China) plan and prepare for when the US left to do a coordinated takeover.

Nope... Biden had all the time in the world to "get it right". We had been there for 20 years, we had zero casualties since March of 2020 in Afghanistan and less than 100 since 2014. We have more casualties in some American military bases than that.
There was actually zero reason for this to be done without even feigning that they were thinking it through.
There is no reason you can provide that Biden was under some timeline to make sure everyone was out before evacuations, or gathering of intelligence and equipment.
Let's be clear. Biden has reversed every single Trump decision (generally to negative consequences) so it would have been par for the course to ignore whatever Trump had negotiated or agreed upon in Afghanistan. Even a Sept 11th timeline was artificial.
Here is where the Reverend will post some Covid numbers from a Democratic state run by a Democratic Governor, all under a Democratic President...
