More international disagreement on vaccinations and herd immunity?

Will vaccinations actually create the herd immunity that we had hoped for?

In Israel, the majority of hospitalizations are vaccinated people
Talking with Channel 13 TV News on August 5, Dr. Kobi Haviv, medical director of Herzog Hospital in Jerusalem said that “85 to 90 percent of the hospitalizations are in fully vaccinated people,” and “95 percent of the severe patients are vaccinated.” Herzog Hospital specializes in nursing care for the elderly. Data from the Israeli Minister of Health in July suggested that the effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine in preventing infection and symptomatic illness had dropped from 90 percent to only 39 percent and 41 percent, respectively. However, the levels of protection against severe illness (88 percent) and hospitalization (91.4 percent) remained high.
Reduction in serious cases, but not a reduction of the spread
While data shows vaccination is reducing the rate of serious illness due to COVID-19 in Iceland, the country’s Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason says it has not led to the herd immunity that experts hoped for. In the past two to three weeks, the Delta variant has outstripped all others in Iceland and it has become clear that vaccinated people can easily contract it as well as spread it to others, Þórólfur stated in a briefing this morning.
Iceland (93% of the population 16 years of age or older vaccinated) is experiencing its largest wave of Covid-19 yet. At this point, I think it is unreasonable to assume that increased vaccine coverage will result in herd immunity
Meanwhile in the United States
About 19% of recent documented COVID-19 cases in California are breakthroughs, and state data shows that those who have been fully vaccinated account for an increasing portion of positive tests. Breakthrough case rates are a sensitive topic, one that some health officials are trying to avoid and which has sparked a lot of handwringing in the media about how to report it. The fear is that misinterpretation of the numbers will dissuade people from getting vaccinated. But, without the data, the important push for everyone to wear masks is weakened.

You hear this phrase being toss around. Herd immunity. Herd immunity is when enough of the public is "immune:" to a virus that it has no place to go and therefor will wither away. Fauci and other experts had suggested that the 70% vaccination threshold would be enough to accomplish that, since many had already contracted the virus and many others have natural immunity.

Right now, only the people over the age of 50 have accomplished this (or are awful close). 40-49 are just under 60% fully vaccinated, 25-39 are only around 50% vaccinated, and those under 25 are way further behind that. Since the vaccine is not available for those under 12, we are obviously going to struggle with children. Btw... if you want to blame another group for lack of vaccination. Blame your millennials and younger generations. The Boomers seem to have no problem being vaccinated.

But either way. If Iceland is going through another wave at 93% vaccinated, then what hope do we have of avoiding this new wave? Probably very little.

Is there a solution? Well there might be. Those who have caught the virus and have the natural anti-bodies are said to be about six times more resistant to catching another round of Covid as those who have the anti-body from the vaccine. So quite honestly, it might actually require more people to get sick with Covid before it will completely go away.

That is not to say that you do not want the vaccination. It still makes you less vulnerable to catching it, less vulnerable to serious sickness, and way less vulnerable to hospitalization and death. The ideal situation would be that enough vaccinated people catch the virus without developing serious illness that we eventually get enough natural anti-bodies to get to herd immunity. It's not perfect. But it might be the only way out of this.

At some point in time we need to be honest about this.  Mask wearing, social distancing, lockdowns are all good in certain theories. But are they really protecting and preventing or is it all just a matter of putting off the inevitable.

What I find puzzling is the vast difference in reporting between the US and the rest of the world. I suspect the CDC is using buckets that go back to inception when they put out numbers that 99 % of deaths are from the unvaccinated (or whatever their high percentage is). I wish I could trust them

But I don't

And it sure doesn't help that big tech is censoring opposing researchers

And that the government is doing things like redacting large chucks of Fauci's emails. What are they hiding ?

Science is based on data and when you can;t trust the data you can't trust the science

And lots of our "science" is seat of the pants unscientific statements from Fauci. Who then changes. Based on "new data"

And now mandates

No thank you

HEARTBREAKING: IDAHO MAN PARALYZED AFTER RECEIVING COVID-19 VACCINE

How many times during the pandemic have we heard we need to get vaccinated to get back to “normal?” Probably more times than we can count. The media continues to push this narrative that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, but always fails to report the thousands of vaccine injuries that are occurring daily. According to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, there are 1,852 vaccine injuries reported just in Idaho. Reporters tend to never reference this data. Why is that? Shouldn’t the public be made aware of serious injuries that may occur from these vaccines?

We all make daily decisions that come with some type of risk versus benefit thought process, but we aren’t often pushed toward a decision that’s only informed about the benefits. The COVID-19 vaccine has been rapidly pushed without sufficient research of the risk and benefits. We have been made to believe this vaccine will allow us to get back to “normal.”

That’s why, like many Americans, Doug Cameron did what he was led to believe would benefit himself and his fellow American.

Doug moved to Idaho in 1968. He graduated from Mountain Home High School and began working at Double Anchor Ranch in Glenns Ferry. Over the years, he has worked steadily and remained active and in good health. He never experienced any health issues that required medical attention or intervention. He decided to get the COVID-19 vaccine, because he was told by many that getting vaccinated was the right thing to do. Cameron received the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine on April 5, 2021 at TLK Farm and Dairies, where he works. Little did he know his life would come crashing down within a few days.

The day after his shot, Cameron began to have severe hip pain and loss of bladder control. He and his wife went to St. Luke’s Hospital in Mountain Home. Cameron asked to be tested for COVID-19 because his wife tested positive just four days after he was vaccinated. His test came back positive, so he was transported to St. Luke’s Emergency room in Boise. The same day, doctors discharged Cameron and said his ailments were related to COVID-19.

From April 12-14, Cameron’s pain worsened — he said it was as if his whole body had been poisoned. On April 15 at 2 a.m., Cameron woke up and was unable to move his legs. A short hour later, he was still unable to move his legs, and his wife found that both legs were cold. He was quickly transported to St. Luke’s in Boise and was admitted to the COVID-19 unit.

On April 16, testing revealed a blood clot in his leg and spinal cord hemorrhage with swelling. At this point doctors were unsure about Cameron’s diagnosis due to the range of symptoms. However, some healthcare workers believed he might have Guillain Barre and Transverse Myelitis; Guillain Barre is a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves, and Transverse Myelitis is a disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. Today, Cameron is partially paralyzed and remains wheelchair bound. Cameron and physicians believe that it’s most likely related to the J&J vaccine.

We’re still learning about COVID-19 and how it spreads, but one of its more unusual properties is that it doesn’t seem to affect people with political opinions preferred by our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters in the press. It’s the first virus in the history of the world that votes Democrat.

Let’s say you’re in a crowded place with a bunch of people, and you’re worried that you might be in the middle of what has come to be known as a “superspreader event.” Well, maybe you are, maybe you aren’t. It depends. Are you attending something frivolous and stupid, like a football game or a motorcycle rally or a speech by a Republican? Or are you participating in something politically important and socially just, like a race riot?

The virus knows. It knows what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, and it only punishes people who don’t read The Atlantic or listen to NPR.

If you can recite a MyPillow ad from memory, you need to wear a mask when you’re told to wear a mask. But if you can pick Lin-Manuel Miranda out of a lineup, you don’t have anything to worry about. That’s how COVID-19 works. That’s just the settled science.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 159 points to hit a new intraday high, led by Caterpillar. The S&P 500 rose 0.1% after hitting intraday record earlier in the session. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite dipped 0.6%, as a rise in Treasury yields weighed on tech stocks.

Mask do nothing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It's an exercise in virtual singling.

How many people will die because others refuse to wear masks????

None that wouldn't have died anyway with mask wearing. The best protection is to get the vaccine. If you still get infected the symptoms are mitigated to the point of not requiring hospitalization.

Nobody is proposing shutdowns!

Yet! Just wait for a month or so. The only thing preventing lockdowns now is it is unpopular government overreach.

This is why DeSantis in Florida is popular. No lockdowns and no mask mandates. DeSantis follows the science not the politics of a federal CDC who recommends mask mandates because they don't have a better solution to give.

I get that you are confused. RCP just added the new Hill Harris poll that was lower than the previous Hill Harris poll. But because that previous poll had already dropped off the RCP averages - the new poll "raised" the cumulative average even as it represents a drop for Biden.

It's why this sort of cumulative polling can be cyclical. Polls that are good for a President might drop off and be replaced by a completely different poll that is not good for a President and vice-versa.

But it still shows that three polls were released today and every one of them showed a drop from the SAME pollster's previous result.

Either way... Biden is struggling to stay above 50% after spending most o fhis Presidency well above that.

The new wave of Covid and the lack of any tangible action from the Administration is doing wonders for his polling! Sure that those illegals are helping as well as that inflation! Anyone see the gas prices recently?

btw... Gas Prices are one of the most important political indicators. They go up and people get down on political leaders. They go down and people are happy.

How the GOP Leadership Voted on Infrastructure
August 10, 2021 at 4:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, as expected, voted yes, but most of his leadership team — Sens. John Thune (R-SD), John Barrasso (R-WY), John Cornyn (R-TX), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Rick Scott (R-FL) — all voted no.”

“Thune was supportive of the bipartisan process — at one point he said he hoped that it might help torpedo the partisan reconciliation bill — and while he never voted to advance the infrastructure bill, he had repeatedly told reporters that he was open to voting yes on final passage. One other member of Senate GOP leadership who joined McConnell in supporting the bill: Roy Blunt (R-MO), who is retiring.”

Paul Kane noted the “no” votes from Barrasso, Cornyn and Thune are likely about all three “playing a long game to try to succeed McConnell.”

Heh... GTFO -

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Seventy-seven families appeared Thursday morning in Hamilton County eviction court, where a judge told them that a new eviction moratorium won't help them.

That moratorium said that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, families who had trouble making payments could not be evicted.

The CDC extended the moratorium on Tuesday.

But Thursday in court, Hamilton County Judge Gary Starnes told everyone who appeared that evictions can in fact happen in Hamilton County.

He says that's because, a higher federal court ruled the CDC did not have the authority to impose the moratorium to begin with.

The 6th circuit court of appeals at Cincinnati ruled in July that the CDC had overreached by imposing the moratorium.

The revived CDC eviction moratorium lasts until October 3, 2021.

However language in the order explains it does not apply in areas where a federal court has previously barred it's application.

Since the 6th circuit court ruled the CDC had overreached, Starnes explains the order does not apply to Hamilton County residents.

New York (CNN Business)Companies big and small are raising wages to attract workers and hold onto employees as the economy revs back into gear.

But those fatter paychecks aren't going as far, thanks to rising inflation.
In fact, compensation is now lower than it was in December 2019, when adjusted for inflation, according to an analysis by Jason Furman, an economics professor at Harvard University.

The Employment Cost Index — which measures wages and salaries, along with health, retirement and other benefits — fell in the last quarter and is 2% below its pre-pandemic trend, when taking inflation into account. (Wages and salaries are growing at a faster pace than benefits.)

"The hot economy is heating prices more than it is heating wages," said Furman.

Wisconsin Governor Sounds Off on GOP’s ‘Audit’ Efforts
August 10, 2021 at 6:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
“Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D)
vetoed a series of bills Tuesday passed by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature that would have imposed new restrictions on absentee ballots in the key battleground state,” the Associated Press reports.

“The Democrat also said two Wisconsin counties should not comply with subpoenas to turn over ballots and voting equipment as part of an investigation being led by the Republican head of the Assembly elections committee.”

Said Evers when asked if the local election clerks should comply:
“HELL NO. You’ve seen what’s going on in Arizona. It’s a CLOWN SHOW.”

Senate Kicks Off Vote-a-Rama
August 10, 2021 at 5:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
“Senate Democrats
kicked off the marathon known as ‘vote-a-rama’ on Tuesday to deliver their next filibuster-proof ticket to passing major legislation against the will of their GOP colleagues,” Politico reports.

“Republican senators began firing off a volley of hot-button amendments Tuesday afternoon, in their last legislative hurrah before senators depart for the August recess that was already supposed to be underway. The GOP plans to drag the voting session well into the night, peppering the majority party with dozens of symbolic amendments on issues like school reopening, hydraulic fracturing and policies for handling immigrants who are sick with coronavirus.

“The vote-a-rama will culminate with a final roll call — likely late Tuesday or in the wee hours of Wednesday — on adoption of a 92-page framework for Democrats’ $3.5 trillion package.”

Europe Has Reopened to Americans But Not Reverse
August 10, 2021 at 5:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
New York Times:
“That the United States remains largely closed has dismayed Europeans and frustrated their leaders, who are demanding that Europe’s decision to open its borders be reciprocated.

“For some European families, the continued ban has compounded one of the deepest sorrows of the pandemic — separation itself — as loved ones become ill across closed borders and family elders grow fearful they may never see their loved ones again.”

Health insurance for America’s older population would be expanded under a $3.5 trillion budget plan released Monday by Senate Democrats.

As part of the budget blueprint, Medicare — relied on by most Americans once they reach the eligibility age of 65 — would cover dental, vision and hearing. Additionally, the age when people can sign up for the insurance would also be lowered, although it’s uncertain whether it would be age 60 as President Joe Biden has said he supports.

Iceland’s Top Epidemiologist: COVID Vaccination Has Not Led to Herd Immunity

Switching gears to treatments instead of desperately clinging to vaccines may be the winning approach.

Iceland..

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Following yesterday’s news that there were 44 coronavirus cases in Iceland the day before—all but 38 of them domestic, with 29 outside quarantine, today’s figures show 56 domestic cases. In fact, covid.is is back to doing daily updates, having previously taken them down to just twice a week earlier this month.

In the wake of this, chief epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason told reporters that a new coronavirus wave is definitely here.

“I think it’s quite safe to say that a new wave has started, and that it is for the most part amongst the vaccinated,” he said. “Fortunately, we are not seeing serious infections yet.”

High rate amongst the vaccinated

That vaccinated people are still contracting, and transmitting, the virus should not be surprising. Vaccines greatly reduce the chances of contracting the coronavirus, and also greatly reduce the symptoms in the event of an infection, but a small percentage of the vaccinated can still catch the virus and transmit it to others.

That said, over 85% of Iceland is now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, which Þórólfur says is fortunate, as without it, they would have had to take stricter measures far sooner. When asked if new domestic or border restrictions may be in the cards, he said: “I think that [the upcoming border restrictions] on their own may not be enough to dampen the pandemic. It is possible we may need to take other measures.”

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook on Tuesday said it shut down a disinformation operation which sought to spread Covid-19 vaccine hoaxes by duping social media influencers into backing false claims.

The leading social network labeled the operation a "disinformation laundromat" which sought to legitimize false claims by pushing them through people with clean reputations.

Influencers who caught onto the sham turned out to be the undoing of a deceitful influence campaign orchestrated by marketing firm Fazze in Russia, according to Facebook.

"The assumption was the influencers wouldn't do any of their own homework, but two did," Facebook global threat intelligence lead Ben Nimmo said while briefing journalists.

"It's really a warning -- be careful when someone is trying to spoon feed you a story. Do your own research."

Facebook said that in July it removed 65 accounts at the leading social network and 243 accounts at photo-centric Instagram that were linked to the campaign, and banned Fazze from its platform.

Fazze is a subsidiary of a AdNow, an advertising company registered in Britain, according to media reports.

The operation targeted primarily India and Latin America, but also took aim at the United States, as governments debated approving vaccines to fight the pandemic, according to Nimmo.

Late last year, the network of fake accounts tried to fuel a false meme that the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 would turn people into chimpanzees,

Iceland’s authorities will continue to protect at-risk groups from COVID-19 and work to curb infection rates in the current wave, says the country’s Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason. Later that day, he told reporters that his words were misinterpreted and authorities’ policy toward the ongoing pandemic remains unchanged. including masking

Over 69% of Iceland’s population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. While the vaccination is preventing serious illness and hospitalisation, it is not preventing infection with or transmission of COVID-19 as much as experts had hoped.

Medicare Advantage Plans cover all Medicare services

Medicare Advantage Plans must cover all of the services that Original Medicare covers. However, if you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Original Medicare will still cover the cost for hospice care, some new Medicare benefits, and some costs for clinical research studies. In all types of Medicare Advantage Plans, you're always covered for emergency and urgently needed care.

The plan can choose not to cover the costs of services that aren't medically necessary under Medicare. If you're not sure whether a service is covered, check with your provider before you get the service.

Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer coverage for things that aren't covered by Original Medicare, like vision, hearing, dental, and wellness programs (like gym memberships). Plans can also cover more extra benefits than they have in the past, including services like transportation to doctor visits, over-the-counter drugs, adult day-care services, and other health-related services that promote your health and wellness. Plans can also tailor their benefit packages to offer these new benefits to certain chronically ill enrollees. These packages will provide benefits customized to treat those conditions. Check with the plan to see what benefits are offered and if you qualify. Most include Medicare Drug Coverage (Part D). In addition to your Part B premium, you usually pay a monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage Plan.

In 2021, the standard Part B premium amount is $148.50 (or higher depending on your income).

Biden Races to Hire Senior Staff at Agencies
August 10, 2021 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Politico:
“In the first three months of 2021, the Biden administration hired more than twice as many senior government executives than Donald Trump did in the same timeframe, a staffing spree aimed at rebuilding agencies rocked by turmoil during Trump’s war on the so-called ‘deep state.’ LOL LOL LOL

“All told, Biden hired at least 319 senior executives in his first three months. The biggest beneficiaries? The Department of Housing and Urban Development tops the list, with Biden increasing senior staffing by 6 percent from Trump’s September 2020 levels. That’s followed by the Social Security Administration and the Treasury Department, with 4 percent and 3 percent bumps respectively.”

Kathy Hochul Takes Center Stage
August 10, 2021 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Associated Press:
“As New York’s lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul has spent years on the road as the friendly face of the administration, visiting the far-flung coffee shops and factory floors of each of the state’s 62 counties for countless ribbon-cutting ceremonies and civic cheerleading events.

“A centrist Democrat from western New York, she has worked deep in Cuomo’s shadow for her two terms in office, but last week joined the chorus of politicians denouncing the governor after an independent investigation concluded he had sexually harassed 11 women while in office.

“At 62, Hochul is an experienced politician, a veteran of 11 campaigns that have taken her from town board to Congress, the latter representing a conservative western New York district after a surprising 2011 win in a special election to fill a vacancy in the U.S. House.”

Today's Democratic Party Has Evolved into a Progressive Politburo

By John Kinsellagh

Recent political events that have unfolded over the past year have revealed a disturbing pattern of an identity politics-fueled progressivism, evolving from its once distasteful authoritarian impulses, towards a more sinister version, that increasingly exhibits totalitarian proclivities.  From the tactics used to coerce or extort corporate compliance with the policy preferences of progressives to the current struggle to inculcate public school children with the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), in word and deed, progressive ideologues are mirroring the tactics used by the former Soviet Union to crush all political opposition and exact compliance with their divisive ideology.

The political tactics of progressive partisans, carried out and nurtured through the political institution of the Democratic Party and its subsidiary organizations, including the higher education establishment, the media, and now in corporations, have become overweening, ruthless, acrimonious, and unapologetically extreme.

Rise of the Progressive Politburo

Over the past five years, the pursuit of progressive politics has gone well beyond intemperance.  Progressives have the dubious distinction of successfully standing on its head Clausewitz's dictum, that war is the continuation of politics by other means.  For the hard left wing of the Democratic Party, it is politics that is the continuation of war by other means.

Individuals who disregard the commandments of the political correctness religion are punished by being blacklisted and ostracized from civil society, forced to attend sensitivity training sessions, or engage in acts of public self-flagellation, complete with confessions for desecrating the inviolable provisions of identity politics, issued and enforced by progressive zealots in academia, the media, and the Democratic Party.

Top ArticlesIs Our Ruling Class Smart, Dumb, orReally Dumb?

Just as the use of the term "counter-revolutionary" became entirely arbitrary and capricious in Soviet Russia, so too today is the ever-evolving definition of exactly what constitutes "racism." For the commissars of the Progressive Politburo, racism is a term, the definition of which is infinitely elastic and mutable, altered whenever necessary to support the preferred progressive Narrative of oppressor and oppressed.  In short, racism is whatever progressives deem it to be at any given point in time.

Indeed, the success of the CRT campaign to date is that progressives have weaponized accusations of racism in the same manner as Stalin and his henchmen did with bogus charges of "counter-revolutionary" activities.  Today's whimsical and perennial accusations of "racism" are raised with the same frequency and telling effect as Stalin's use of the sweeping term "counterrevolutionary."

WASHINGTON—The Senate passed a $3.5 trillion budget blueprint early Wednesday, the first step in an arduous process designed to allow Democrats to push through a sweeping package of education, healthcare, climate and other provisions without GOP support.

The party line vote, 50-49, came just before 4 a.m., one day after the Senate passed a roughly $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package. It is an initial victory for President Biden and congressional Democrats who are seeking to pass as much of their legislative agenda as possible this year, before next year’s midterm elections overtake Capitol Hill.

“Senate Democrats have just took a massive step towards restoring the middle class of the 21st century,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said just after the vote. “What we’re doing here is not easy. Democrats have labored for months to reach this point. And there are many labors to come. But I can say with absolute certainty that it will be worth doing.”

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said the blueprint was “full of reckless taxing and spending.”

But Democrats, who have slim margins in both chambers, will face difficult choices and negotiations, as they work to transform the budget framework into detailed legislation.

“Putting all the pieces together will be a challenge, but we’ve got a good place to start in terms of discussions that have already taken place,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D., Md.). Lawmakers are expected to begin those negotiations over Zoom and phone calls during the August recess. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) had set a Sept. 15 target date for committees to submit their pieces of the legislation.

Speaker Pelosi got what she wanted.

It’s not; only 23 percent of the bill is real infrastructure, the rest is Green New Deal and welfare. They told us the bill was paid for; it isn’t, we’re gonna have to borrow maybe up to $400 billion to pay for it. They told us there were no tax increases. There are; my state’s gonna have to pay $1.3 billion in new taxes on our petrochemical industry.

“They told us … the Democrats were really wary of this bill and that if we passed this bill, it would make it harder for them to pass their $5 trillion tax and spending binge, reconciliation bill,” Kennedy added. “Well, if that’s true, how come every Democrat voted for this infrastructure bill? And finally, they told us that it’s not going to add to inflation, but it will.”

Yep. Planning on this BIGLY:

Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters believe it is likely that the Biden Administration will raise taxes on middle class Americans. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 27% consider it unlikely and 12% are not sure.

These results are especially stunning given that, before being asked the question, survey respondents were reminded that President Biden has promised not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000 a year.

Republicans overwhelmingly believe tax hikes are coming for the middle class. Democrats are evenly divided with a very modest plurality expecting tax hikes. Among Independent voters, 44% say the middle class taxes are likely while 25% disagree.

Most voters (53%) believe that tax hikes hurt the economy while just 23% believe they help. Voters who prefer Trump like policies and Traditional Republican policies share a strong believe that tax hikes are bad for the economy.

However, there is a divide on this issue between Sanders’ Democrats and Traditional Democrats. By a 42% to 31% margin, those who favor Sanders like policies believe tax hikes are good for the economy. By a mirror image 42% to 27% margin, Traditional Republicans believe they are bad.

Voters with a postgraduate degree are evenly divided as to whether tax hikes or good or bad for the economy. Among all other voters, most believe tax hikes hurt the economy.

Data released earlier shows that 59% of voters nationwide believe increased government spending leads to inflation. That helps explain why just 22% of voters want Congress and the President to increase federal spending next year.

Two court rulings on Tuesday cleared the way for local leaders who oppose a ban by Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas on mask mandates to at least temporarily require face coverings to help curb a rise in cases.

The first ruling came in Bexar County, which includes San Antonio. Masks can now be required in public schools and other public buildings there.

Masks will also be required for county and city employees, said Andy Segovia, the city attorney for San Antonio. The chief executive of Bexar County, Judge Nelson W. Wolff, said that the ruling was important because many students who are too young to be vaccinated would otherwise be coming back to school with no protection.

The second ruling was delivered by a district judge in Dallas County who said the ban prevented officials from protecting residents during an emergency.

“Dallas County citizens will be irreparably harmed” if local leaders cannot require face coverings to stop the transmission of the virus, the judge, Tonya Parker, wrote in the ruling.

In light of the decision, Clay Jenkins, the county’s chief elected official, said he planned to issue an emergency order for the county on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Texas recorded 20,000 new virus cases, nearly double the number of cases as two weeks ago, according to a New York Times database.

Some hospitals in the state are nearing capacity and are bracing for an influx of patients. The intensive care unit at Houston’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital is at full capacity, and 63 percent of those patients are Covid cases, CNN reported.

On Tuesday, a temporary mask mandate for students, staff members and visitors to public schools in Dallas went into effect.

Brendan Steinhauser, a consultant who lives in a Republican-leaning suburb of Austin, said the rising number of cases had led more people to wear masks.

“It is palpable,” he said of his neighbors’ mask-wearing attitude. “I noticed it and it was like, ‘Whoa.’”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Real experts

More than 175 public health experts, scientists and activists on Tuesday demanded that President Biden take urgent steps to confront the global spread of the coronavirus, warning that without immediate action to inoculate the rest of the world, newer variants are likely to emerge — including ones that may evade vaccines’ protection.
“We urge you to act now,” the experts wrote in a joint letter to senior White House officials Tuesday and shared with The Washington Post. “Announcing within the next 30 days an ambitious global vaccine manufacturing program is the only way to control this pandemic, protect the precious gains made to date, and build vaccine infrastructure for the future.”
The health experts also address Biden directly in a separate letter, underscoring that the delta variant is causing a surge of infections across the globe, including in Africa, Latin America and Asia, where many residents have yet to receive a single dose. Meanwhile, they note, the United States has stockpiled more than 55 million doses of mRNA vaccines but is administering fewer than 900,000 per day, with millions of Americans still balking at getting the shots.
“At this rate, it would take over two months to administer just the vaccine doses currently stored,” wrote the authors, urging Biden to begin distributing millions of stockpiled doses per week.

If they stage another Insurrection, they will be shouting Hang Mich McConnell.

“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell credited President Biden with helping to get the roughly $1 trillion infrastructure bill passed in the Senate, but said he doesn’t anticipate many more opportunities for Republicans to work with Democrats,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said McConnell: “There’s nothing to back you up like the promise of a presidential signatory, if you’re in the same party as the president. And so I think the president deserves a lot of credit for getting the Democrats open to reaching a bipartisan agreement on this bill.”

He added: “When the president ran for office, he said he was a moderate, so I was looking for some evidence of it. And we finally, finally found it.”
