The architecture of the hasty U.S. withdrawal and the inevitable deadly chaos that has followed was constructed by the previous commander in chief.

The rushed evacuation and its vulnerability to Thursday’s deplorable attack were inevitable outcomes of the rapid collapse of the Afghan government. But while Biden does, indeed, hold his share of responsibility for that collapse, he wasn’t inaccurate when he pointed out in his news conference Thursday that the architecture of the hasty U.S. withdrawal and the inevitable deadly chaos that has followed was constructed by the previous commander in chief. Indeed, if there was ever a chance for a more orderly U.S. exit — and to be clear, that’s far from certain — one of Biden’s biggest mistakes might have been to adhere to the deal former President Donald Trump made with the Taliban rather than set his own terms and timeline.

We need only rewind to February 2020, when the Trump administration signed the Doha agreement with the Taliban, in which the U.S. pledged to withdraw all U.S. and NATO forces by May 1, 2021, in exchange for the Taliban’s ceasing attacks on U.S. forces, forsaking ties to groups like Al Qaeda and agreeing to hold peace negotiations with the Afghan government, which then still controlled most of the country even though it was increasingly losing ground to the Taliban.

Those who pushed Biden to leave Afghanistan need to admit their part in this tragedy.

The Doha negotiations didn’t include the Afghan government — supposedly our partners in fighting the Taliban and terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, the group better known as ISIS — and the deal that resulted was widely recognized as having thrown our allies under the bus, as the Taliban were free to carry on fighting the Afghan army as long as they didn’t attack U.S. forces.

The Taliban proceeded to do just that, going on the offensive in March 2020 while repeatedly spurning or walking out on the Afghan government’s attempts to negotiate a power-sharing agreement. As the government’s sway diminished, the agreement gave the Taliban new legitimacy, making it harder to dissuade them from pursuing a total military victory in place of some accommodation with the government. In other words, it was immediately clear to all observers that the treaty comprehensively removed incentives for the Taliban to compromise.

Pentagon confirms 13 U.S. service members killed.
In another slap in the face — and a further destabilization of the already volatile scene — the Trump administration coerced the understandably angry Afghan government into releasing 5,000 Taliban prisoners a year ago, including 400 convicted of serious crimes, such as murder. This move was designed to appease Taliban peace negotiators, but it failed to yield more diplomatic concessions. Instead, many of the released fighters promptly reinforced Taliban forces in the field as they steadily gnawed away at the Afghan army, no doubt contributing to the unexpected speed of the Taliban’s swift recapture of the country.

Ironically, the Taliban then committed a similar error when they began to reclaim power in recent days. Two Taliban leaders told NBC News that the group’s “biggest blunder” was releasing prisoners from jails as they swept across Afghanistan..

The people who were released, committed the bombing that killed 13 American soldiers.

Setting hard deadlines was important to Trump — and then Biden for domestic political reasons, of course — but the looming certainty of American withdrawal made it easy for the Taliban to bribe demoralized Afghan commanders into surrendering without a fight, facilitating the Taliban’s rapid advance.

By taking the enforcement mechanism out of DeSantis administration’s mask rules, Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper stops the Florida Department of Education from sanctioning school districts that require face coverings.

Judge Says DeSantis Can’t Ban Mask Mandates

A Florida judge said that school districts may impose mask mandates, ruling that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) overstepped his authority by issuing an executive order banning the mandates, the Associated Press reports.

“The judge also noted that two Florida Supreme Court decisions from 1914 and 1939 found that individual rights are limited by their impact on the rights of others. For example, he said, adults have the right to drink alcohol but not to drive drunk. There is a right to free speech, but not to harass or threaten others or yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”

Nope.

An agreement that the Taliban not move on Afghan or American troops while the United States set a withdrawal date of May 31st was made by Trump. Biden didn't even use the same date.

There was no Trump plan in place to withdrawal troops before evacuating Americans and Afghan friendly nationalists, or before removing our military equipment. Trump had previously and has recently stated that they woudl have evacuated first, removed military equipment, and after he withdrew the troop, they would then leveled the airfields and other military bases from the air.

The only thing in common between the Trump plan and the Biden plan was that we were going to eventually withdrawal.

That would be like you planning on building a building on some property (as you claim to do) but you ran out of time. Then someone else comes along, builds a building on that property with poor foundations, bad lumber, a bad design, and sloppy workmanship... the building falls down and that builder blames you and demands you were the "architect of his failure".

Biden's the commander in chief and is virtually unchecked when it come to conducting foreign affairs. There was no military policy or diplomatic initiative that Biden could reverse if he had to.

Instead he took Trump's policy of phased, condition base, withdrawal and recklessly yank the military out leaving Americans and Afghan allies trapped by the Taliban.

This is all on Biden.

Certainly... but the previous administration didn't have anything to do with the planning of this withdrawal. It wasn't their date, it wasn't their timing, it wasn't their order of movement.

The August 31st timeline was Biden's.
The decision to withdrawal before evacuation was Biden's.
The decision to not take the military equipment was Biden's.
The decision to not to destroy the bases was Biden's.

Every last one of those decisions were substantially different than what the previous President had planned or would have done.

The issue here Roger... is a semantic play. A dishonest use of the term "architect" in describing Trump as if he determined those decisions for Bidan. The only thing Trump did was make an agreement with the Taliban for them to stay in place and not attack Afghan and US Troops. The rest is 100% on Biden.

The argument seems to be...

Trump put forth the idea that we had to withdrawal.

Biden was not competent enough to plan any sort of withdrawal without it being a disaster.

Therefor Trump is to blame.

The nutiest yet President in history

The United States effectively has no president. That must be distinctly understood at this point. He admitted this. Asked by Phillip Wegmann, White House correspondent for Real Clear Politics, if he had made the call to close American airbases before evacuation occurred, Biden said that it was what his military advisers told him to do.

The only decision Biden makes these days is what flavor ice cream he wants. Maybe.

Sen. Josh Hawley has called on Biden to resign in the wake of his administration's Afghan withdrawal disaster. It's a reasonable call, but also pointless. Joe Biden no more leads the nation than George Washington or Abe Lincoln do. He's a presidential portrait painted before its time. Nothing more.

But the country does need resignations. Not Biden's but resignations of cabinet secretaries, the well-credentialed fools who truly authored the administration's idiocy. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken must resign. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin must resign. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan must resign. But that's not enough.

Once they resign, moderate, serious minded Democrat senators must join Republicans in only confirming replacements that will reverse the horrendous foreign and national defense policies that have humiliated America on the world stage. Biden is president for three more years, Congress must act to ensure that the people instructing him are competent.

This is an emergency, and it is one we have never experienced before. The image of Joe Biden bowing his head in quiet, sad frustration is alarming. If there is a silver lining to this sad display it is that maybe Congress will act to take back control of our foreign policy. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has called for the House to come back in session to get control of this situation. Of course, he is correct.

The Biden presidency is over, but it never really began. Clearly his cabinet is in control. Clearly they have been in control since day one. That cabinet decided to trust the Taliban to protect Americans. They are relying on terrorists who blow themselves up to act in their own self-interest. It is a macabre comedy. Those who hold Biden's strings must go, and they must go now.

All of this is much bigger than Afghanistan, as big as this humiliation is. This is the national security apparatus that is responsible for policies on Iran, North Korea, China, Ukraine, Yemen, everywhere. They blatantly cannot be trusted to protect American interests. That's not a hypothetical anymore. It's a tragedy.

Joe Biden, the 46th president, elected to bring back norms is irrelevant. Utterly, completely irrelevant. But we have him for three more years anyway. With loud, piercing, clarion calls we must demand the removal of his handlers, let congress replace them, and let us do better in the election of 2024. We do not have a president. We have a crumbling old man. OK. Now what?

Democrats did not demand GW’s resignation (or impeachment) after 9/11.

Neither 9/11 or Lebanon were due to Presidential incompetence. There was no failure of George W Bush on the planning and execution of a military action. There was no failure of Reagan.

The problem for Biden was that he was outwardly warned and publicly questioned about his plans. He demanded that there was no way that the Taliban would be able to take over Kabul, and when questioned about whether this would be another problem with evacuations...

He literally stated that there would be no helicopters landing on the roof of the embassy to evacuate Americans (something that actually happened).

“Old battles have become new again,” said US Representative Terri Sewell, of Alabama, as she introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act for Tuesday’s essential vote in the House. And even as the old battles are being fought anew, the old battle lines have changed as well. The Republican Party, which was once a more energetic and consistent supporter of civil rights in general and voting rights in particular than the Democrat Party, has united in grotesquely self-serving and destructive opposition to principles it historically championed.

When the House approved the voting rights measure named for civil rights icon John Lewis, every one of the 219 “yes” votes was cast by a Democrat. All 212 “no” votes came from Republicans.

Like their colleagues in the Senate, House Republicans sought to block the restoration and extension of vital sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which were weakened by rulings from a US Supreme Court dominated by right-wing judicial activists. The recalcitrance of House Republicans was all the more jarring because the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is so clearly needed—along with the proposed For the People Act—to counter a new wave of voter suppression.

Donald Trump is still struggling with names.

In a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity on Thursday, the former president claimed he’d “knocked out 100% of the ISIS caliphate” but that a “new ISIS” had formed: “ISIS-X.”

The group operating in Afghanistan, which claimed responsibility for Thursday’s deadly attack in Kabul, is actually ISIS-K, which stands for Islamic State Khorasan.

“Khorasan” is a historical term for Afghanistan and the surrounding region.

Trump eventually got the name right. As is his tendency, however, he didn’t admit he’d botched it, instead insisting that he was predicting the future.

“They’ll have an ISIS-X pretty soon, which is gonna be worse than ISIS-K,” he told Hannity.

The United States military struck back at the Islamic State on Saturday, bombing an IS member in Afghanistan less than 48 hours after a devastating suicide bombing claimed by the group killed as many as 169 Afghans and 13 American service members at the Kabul airport.

U.S. Central Command said the U.S. conducted a drone strike against an Islamic State member in Nangahar believed to be involved in planning attacks against the U.S. in Kabul. The strike killed one individual, and spokesman Navy Capt. William Urban said they knew of no civilian casualties.

“U.S. military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner. The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahar Province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties,” Urban said in his statement.

Biden authorized the drone strike and it was ordered by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, a defense official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet publicly announced.

It wasn’t clear if that individual was involved specifically in the Thursday suicide blast outside the gates of the Kabul airport, where crowds of Afghans were desperately trying to get in as part of the ongoing evacuation from the country after the Taliban’s rapid takeover.

The airstrike fulfilled a vow President Joe Biden made to the nation Thursday when he said the perpetrators of the attack would not be able to hide. “We will hunt you down and make you pay,” he said. Pentagon leaders told reporters Friday that they were prepared for whatever retaliatory action the president ordered.

“We have options there right now,” said Maj. Gen. Hank Taylor of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff.
