Almost 1600 more Biden Covid deaths today alone...

Five of top eight states in reported deaths today have Democratic Governors

Pretty sure I had a plan. Just don't remember what it was?

It seemed easy to give Slow Joe a pass when you could just blame everything on Florida or Republican states. But now (as Covid invariably does) that the virus has started spreading outward, we are seeing larger increases of cases and deaths everywhere. No longer is there any sort of simple narrative that Joe and the Democrats have this under control, while DeSantis and the GOP are out there killing people.

Ultimately the buck stops with the man with the foolproof plan to stop Covid in it's tracks.

California rolled in with 144 deaths, North Carolina 96, Louisiana 75, Pennsylvania 74, New York 45. You can look at Connecticut, Illinois, and Washington also in that top 15. Things are evening out, just as they always do. This never remains in a single area of the country. People just don't seem to get that. I don't really want to say I told you so, but I told you so.

I strongly suspect that the media will not play any of the new hotbeds like they always love to play it out when Florida is up there (who btw, reported 11 deaths today). Sure, they might play up Texas who lead in deaths today. Perhaps the red hot focus on things when it ends up in Texas or Florida (then ignoring it as it flairs up elsewhere) is why people tend to believe that Florida and Texas must lead the way (when in fact they come in at 17 and 24 in deaths per million).

All I can say is that Biden better get working on implementing his foolproof plan or he will be looking at even lower polling numbers than he is currently receiving. People will not tolerate finger pointing and blame deflection if these numbers keep getting worse.

The evidence is mounting up that masks and vaccinations and isolation DO help and the opposite can be a disaster, so the going story is that Biden and the Democrats have been right all along on that, while Trump and the Republicans even now lag behind in being sensible on this matter to such a degree that much of the blame for us not being in better shape everywhere is borne by them, though many Republicans are now belatedly trying to make up for lost time by getting vaccinated and wearing masks.

Welcome to sanity, those who are.

Too bad for the far too many who aren't, many of whom now wish they had.

Fauci defends COVID boosters, says 3 shots will 'likely' be the new norm
Yahoo News
September 2, 2021, 4:05 PM

WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top medical adviser to President Biden, defended the administration’s decision to recommend coronavirus vaccine booster shots and said that three doses of an mRNA vaccine, not two, would be the new standard of full vaccination.

“I would not at all be surprised that the adequate, full regimen for vaccination will likely be three doses,” Fauci said during a Thursday briefing of the White House coronavirus response team, though he noted that regulators would have to ultimately make that determination.

Fauci presented data from Israel that showed waning immunity to the virus after about eights months that he said “supported the rationale for COVID-19 booster shots.” After the more transmissible Delta variant arrived in Israel in early summer, the number of positive coronavirus cases and severe COVID-related illnesses rose among vaccinated individuals between June and August. By then, many Israelis had been vaccinated for more than half a year, a testament to the speed with which the small, technologically advanced nation had conducted its inoculation campaign.

Faced with an unexpected Delta-fueled surge, Israel began to administer booster shots of the Pfizer vaccine on July 30 to older individuals, who are the most likely to become ill with COVID-19. Less than two weeks thereafter, Israel saw what Fauci described as a “rather substantial positive impact,” with “a greater-than-tenfold diminution in the relative risk of both confirmed infection and severe disease.”

Later in the briefing, Fauci said that the protection conferred by a third shot was “dramatic” and “durable.” One Israeli study found that, three weeks after a third shot, the risk of infection dropped by as much as 84 percent, when compared to a two-shot regimen.

Of the three vaccines now approved for use in the U.S., those manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna use mRNA technology. Initially, two doses were considered sufficient, but many virologists now believe immunity needs the enhancement that comes with a third shot.

A third vaccine available in the United States, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, uses an older technology — viral vectors — than its newer mRNA counterparts. It requires a single dose. A booster program for Americans who were administered that vaccine has not yet been announced.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

The World Health Organization and other groups have called on the U.S. to share vaccine doses with the developing world instead of bolstering protection for their own populations. And earlier this week, two top regulators at the Food and Drug Administration resigned out of frustration at having had little say in the booster debate.

“I would hope that the countries that are boosting their populations similar to what we are understand the importance of the global necessity to essentially suppress this at the global level,” Fauci said. He pointed out that the United States has already donated 130 million doses to some 90 countries, a contribution far exceeding that of any other nation.

“We can do both. We can protect the American people and contribute to the world,” added Jeff Zients, the White House pandemic response team coordinator.

Last week, the administration said booster shots would begin on Sept. 20, with vulnerable populations such as seniors in long-term care becoming eligible for a third shot first. Americans are advised to receive their third shot eight months after having received their second.

Still, there are plenty of Americans who have not yet been vaccinated at all, meaning that the booster effort will only compound challenges inherent in the ongoing inoculation effort. As of Sept. 1, about 53 percent of Americans were vaccinated, a share not high enough to halt community spread of the coronavirus. Millions of children under the age of 12 are not yet eligible for vaccination, and it could be months before they are able to get their shots.

And how about Texas bounty hunters..

If you are looking for a way to make money on abortion, you should move to Texas. Not by giving an abortion.

The Texas law that bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy includes an unusual measure designed to ensure the law is enforced: Residents of the state can sue

Let's say you meet a woman who you know and like. But in an emotional situation, she tells you that her father had raped her, and she got an abortion. You can actually sue the cab driver or the Lyft driver for $10,000. And if you win the case the Lyft driver has to pay the legal fees.

Even the clinics, doctors, nurses and even people who drive a woman to get the procedure, for at least $10,000.

State of the virus

Update for Sept. 1

Cases, hospitalizations and deaths have risen to their highest levels since winter as the Delta variant continues to upend hopes for a return to normalcy. The national rate of case growth has slowed in recent days as infection levels have started to fall in some of the hardest-hit states. Reports of new cases, though still high, have been declining in Mississippi and Florida.Since the beginning of August, the number of deaths being reported each day has more than quadrupled.

The pace of vaccination continues to increase as more workplaces require employees to get the shots. Around 900,000 doses are being administered each day, and about 52 percent of Americans are fully vaccinated.Through Tuesday, South Carolina led the country in recent cases per capita. The state is averaging 5,100 newly reported infections a day, up from about 1,500 in early August.More than 100,000 coronavirus patients are hospitalized nationwide, including more than 16,000 in Florida, which has a far higher hospitalization rate than any other state.Incremental progress in the Deep South is being offset by growing outbreaks in Midwestern and mid-Atlantic states.
North Dakota, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania are reporting sharp rises in infections. New case reports in West Virginia have more than doubled over the past two weeks.

THWAP THWAP Judge orders Capitol riot defendant back to jail after he watched the MyPillow guy's election conspiracies

A Capitol Riot defendant is returning to jail less than two months after he got out thanks to his viewing of conspiracy theories, including from the MyPillow guy.

A judge on Thursday ordered Capitol riot suspect Doug Jensen to return to jail because he violated the conditions of his release by using the internet to watch conspiracy theory content, CNN reports.

Prosecutors previously said in a court filing that Jensen admitted that he "spent two days watching Mike Lindell's Cyber Symposium regarding the recount of the presidential election," even though he wasn't permitted to access the internet after being released. Jensen is accused of leading a mob that chased a Capitol Police officer in the Jan. 6 riot, during which supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol. His lawyer had argued that he has since recognized that he "bought into a pack of lies," according to BuzzFeed News.

But District Judge Timothy Kelly said Thursday it was "clear that he has not experienced the transformation that his lawyer previously described, and that he continues to seek out the conspiracy theories that led to his dangerous conduct on January 6," CNN reports. The judge added, "I don't see any reason to believe that he has had the wake-up call that he needs." Per CNN, Jensen's lawyer argued it "sounds a bit Orwellian" that the "government wants to jail him" for "streaming the news," but he added, "Orwellian aside, he was wrong, and he's not denying that."

Massive randomized study shows that surgical masks limit coronavirus spread, authors say

September 1, 2021 at 2:09 p.m. EDT

The authors of a study based on an enormous randomized research project in
Bangladesh say their results offer the best evidence yet that widespread wearing of surgical masks can limit the spread of the coronavirus in communities.
The preprint paper, which tracked more than 340,000 adults across 600 villages in rural Bangladesh, is by far the largest randomized study on the effectiveness of masks at limiting the spread of coronavirus infections.
Its authors say this provides conclusive, real-world evidence for what laboratory work and other research already strongly suggest: mask-wearing can have a significant impact on limiting the spread of symptomatic covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.
“I think this should basically end any scientific debate about whether masks can be effective in combating covid at the population level,” Jason Abaluck, an economist at Yale who helped lead the study, said in an interview, calling it “a nail in the coffin” of the arguments against masks.

Tucker Carlson has amplified a lot of antivaxx and functionally pro-COVID sentiments on his show for months, even if, as Fox News always notes when asked, he has very carefully insisted he is not anti-vaccines and is simply asking questions about *this* particular vaccine.

But whether you believe that or not, on Thursday’s episode of his show Carlson fully endorsed people who buy and use fake vaccine cards to avoid getting the real thing. He also said that efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, which has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans and rendered hundreds of thousands more seriously ill, are “serious” crimes committed by “tyrants” who Tucker said he hopes will be “punished for it.”

“The Afghanistan withdrawal has contributed to a drop in Biden’s overall approval rating, which for the first time in his presidency is net negative. The poll finds 44% saying they approve of how he is handling his job, while 51% disapprove.”

Trump Tells Confidants He’ll Announce 2024 Bid Soon
September 3, 2021 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) told The Undercurrent in Iowa that Donald Trump will announce he’s running for President in 2024 “any day now.”

Maggie Haberman reports Trump “could always not pull the trigger but this is what he’s now told several people — sooner rather than later.”

Jonathan Bernstein:
“Early candidacy announcements are usually a sign of weakness. Longshots announce early, and begin campaigning early, because they need a lot of time to build enough attention and support to persuade party actors and news organizations to take them seriously.

“But Trump’s situation is different. It’s at least possible that by jumping in definitively at this early stage, he could convince everyone else to stay out. The longer uncertainty persists, the more other politicians will be doing candidate-like things, which in turn could make one or more of them more likely to stay in and run a serious campaign. Even if Trump would be the likely winner, he’d rather have the nomination given to him than to have to fight for it, and an early announcement might do the trick.”

LOOK FOR BIDEN'S POLL NUMBERS TO IMPROVE SUDDENLY AND DRMATICALLY IF TRUMP DOES ANNOUNCE. :-)

FROM YESTERDAY...
...I just saw this:

Liberty University's COVID-19 count triples in a week
The News & Advance, Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG — Numbers released Wednesday show Liberty University’s confirmed COVID-19 case count has more than tripled since it reached a record high last week.

Liberty now has 488 confirmed cases on campus — 430 of them students and 58 of them faculty and staff. That’s compared with 159 cases last week and a record high last year of 141 confirmed cases.

The university announced a campuswide “quarantine” last week, following the first few days of classes. It later reworded its website to call the measure a “temporary mitigation period.” That entails online classes, while hands-on learning environments such as labs and flight training would see “re-introduction of mitigation measures” that were not specified in a news release, and a suspension of large indoor gatherings.

UNLIKE MOST OTHER COLLEGES IN VIRGINIA, LIBERTY ISN'T MANDATING MASKING OR VACCINATION.

Photos on the school’s Instagram account showed a packed convocation at the Vines Center as classes started back up last week, before the mitigation period was announced. Photos of Liberty’s College Republicans club meeting Monday, held off campus at GOP gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin’s headquarters nearby, showed attendees in close quarters without masks on.

Questions sent to a Liberty spokesperson were not immediately answered Wednesday, including questions about reports its quarantine annex is full.
______________

JAMES RESPONDS:
BROTHER. IS THERE NO END TO THIS INSANITY?

I have a former parishoner whose granddaughter is attending Liberty and I immediately called her. She tells me that her granddaughter recently tested positive and is now quarantined, NOT ON CAMPUS, but in a privately rented hotel room.

She was vaccinated, on her own, and will likely recover from the sniffles, aches, and pains she now has, but she is angered that the University put her in a room with two other students, one a girl from California who doesn't believe in vaccinations, etc.

Brother.

What Focus Groups of Swing Voters Are Saying

“At this point, however, listening to these voters is helpful not for predicting the outcome of the 2022 election, but for understanding how they are processing the world around them. They are often much less interested in the topics and policies that get chewed over on Twitter or cable TV. Many times they also see those issues very differently than we assume they do.

“My main takeaway was the prominence of COVID as their dominant concern. When asked about how they felt about the state of the country, almost all of them replied with a pessimistic comment. And, that negativity was almost universally centered around issues of the virus and the vaccine.”

Five Justices Did This Because They Could
September 3, 2021 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Adam Serwer:
“The conservative majority on the Supreme Court was so eager to nullify Roe v. Wade, the 1973 precedent securing the right to abortion, that it didn’t even wait for oral arguments…”

“Also remarkable was that the Supreme Court acted through its ‘shadow docket,’ the decisions the justices make regarding emergency appeals such as death-penalty cases. Under normal procedure, cases take time to work their way through the lower courts, and are received at the Supreme Court with extensive records, briefs, and oral arguments. Ideally, this allows the justices to ensure that their hugely consequential decisions are properly informed and made as carefully as possible, weighing all the relevant legal and constitutional issues.

“But there are some circumstances in which the Court needs to act quickly to prevent some imminent or irreversible harm. There’s nothing inherently sinister about that. The shadow docket, though, now resembles a venue where the conservative legal movement can get speedy service from its friends on the Court.”

A poll from OH Predictive Insights found 63% of registered Republican voters in the state would rather have someone else from the party representing them, compared to 35% who stand with Mr. Romney, the party’s 2012 presidential nominee.
“In the 2012 Presidential election, Mitt Romney earned the largest share of the vote in Utah of any Republican presidential candidate since Reagan in 1984,” said Mike Noble, chief of research for OH Predictive Insights. “The data shows that Utahns’ opinions have flipped since 2012 — with two-thirds of GOP voters preferring a Republican senator other than Mitt Romney, he is more vulnerable than ever in a primary election.”

I'm surprised it's only 63%

must have been a lot of democrats crossing over and voting as republicans last cycle

Joe Manchin Has Put Biden’s Presidency in Mortal Danger
September 3, 2021 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Jonathan Chait:
“The greatest danger posed by Manchin’s pause gambit is that it will wreck the carefully negotiated strategy Democratic leaders have crafted. Facing moderate and progressive factions that don’t trust each other, they set out to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill (favored by the center) and Biden’s human capital bill (favored by the left) in tandem. Manchin reportedly advised the moderate House Democrats who, months into the schedule, decided to wreck the strategy and insist on infrastructure first.

“The compromise negotiated in the House requires an expedited schedule, with an infrastructure vote by the end of the month. The sequence is still workable, as long as both factions have an understanding of what they’ll include in the social spending bill. Without that understanding in place, progressives have every incentive to vote down the infrastructure bill, which will in turn contribute to the impression of dysfunction and chaos.”

Toomey Says Trump Should Not Be Nominee In 2024
September 3, 2021 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) has urged his party not to nominate former President Donald Trump as its presidential nominee in 2024, CNBC reports.

Said Toomey, who is retiring next year:
“I think after what happened post-2020 election, I think the president’s behavior was completely unacceptable, so I don’t think he should be the nominee to lead the party in 2024.”

The increase in infections had a significant effect. Disappointing news.

The U.S. economy added 235,000 jobs in August and the unemployment rate dipped to 5.2 percent, the Labor Department said in its monthly labor assessment Friday.

The median Econoday forecast of analysts was for 740,000 jobs and an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent, according to Econoday. The private payrolls report from payroll processor ADP on Wednesday, however, pointed to a much weaker number, with ADP estimating just 374,000 jobs, missing estimates for 500,000.

The Wall Street Journal reports.

U.S. payrolls grew by 235,000 and the jobless rate fell to 5.2% in August, as employers pulled back sharply on hiring during a surge of Covid-19 cases driven by the Delta variant.

August payroll growth was well below economists’ estimates. It also was down from monthly payroll gains of 1.1 million in July and 962,000 in June, the Labor Department said on Friday.

August: +235,000 jobs2020'21-25-20-15-10-50million

Hiring was particularly weak in services sectors that involve in-person interaction. Employment in leisure and hospitality held steady after adding an average of 350,000 jobs a month over the previous six months. Retailers cut jobs in August.

They said the same thing I said before

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The rising number of Covid-19 cases tied to the Delta variant resulted in slower job growth for two reasons, economists say. Businesses, particularly in services sectors requiring in-person contact, held off on hiring amid heightened pandemic uncertainty. Jobless individuals who are fearful of Covid-19 health also were slower to return to the labor market until the virus

Like I said.

The Delta variant also appears to be denting consumer spending growth and confidence. The number of diners seated at restaurants was down 9% in the week ended Sept. 2 compared with the same week in 2019, before the pandemic, for instance, according to reservations site OpenTable. The volume of people eating out has gradually slowed from earlier this summer.

It's not great news.

But 5.2 % isn't terrible news

All he does well anymore is LIE:

President Biden on Thursday told Jewish leaders that he spent time at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh after the October 2018 mass murder of 11 people there -- but the synagogue told The Post he never visited.

"I remember spending time at the, you know, going to the, you know, the Tree of Life synagogue, speaking with them," Biden said in a 16-minute virtual address ahead of the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Barb Feige, executive director of the Tree of Life, said that Biden did not visit the synagogue in the nearly three years since the anti-Semitic attack.

In a phone interview, Feige, executive director since July 2019, said firmly that "no" Biden didn't visit, even before taking office when he had a lower public profile as a former vice president and then-Democratic presidential candidate.

The bare-chested man pictured with his face painted, wearing a horned helmet and howling in the Senate chamber during the insurrection on January 6th is expected to plead guilty Friday in federal court to charges stemming from his participation at the riot, according to a court filing.

Jacob Chansley, aka the "QAnon Shaman," was charged with a six-count indictment that includes civil disorder, violent entry and disorderly conduct, as well as a felony count for obstruction of an official proceeding, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The details of Chansley's plea agreement with the government, including which specific charges he is pleading guilty to, have not yet been made public.

Forecasts for the report are wide-ranging, from about 300,000 to 1 million.

REGARDING ABORTION:
Texas Republicans May Regret Their New Abortion Law

September 3, 2021 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

David Frum:
“Today, accountability has suddenly arrived. Texas Republicans have just elevated abortion rights to perhaps the state’s supreme ballot issue in 2022.
Perhaps they have calculated correctly.
Perhaps a Texas voting majority really wants to see the reproductive lives of Texas women restrained by random passersby.
If that’s the case, that’s an important political fact, and one that will reshape the politics of the country in 2024…”

“If the Texas Republicans prosper politically, then abortion-rights advocates must accept that the country truly is much more conservative on abortion than they appreciated and adjust their goals accordingly.

"But if not, and I’m guessing that the answer is not, anti-abortion-rights politicians are about to feel the shock of their political lives.
For the first time since the 1970s, they will have to reckon with mobilized opposition that also regards abortion as issue No. 1 in state and local politics.”

Florida on Thursday reported 21,723 more COVID-19 cases and 1,338 additional deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

All but 38 of the newly reported deaths, about 97%, occurred after Aug. 5, according to the Herald analysis. About 70% of the newly reported died in the past two weeks, the analysis showed. The majority of deaths happened during Florida’s latest surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the delta variant.

In the past seven days, on average, the state has added 325 deaths and 19,902 cases each day, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. This is a record high for the death average.
