Are the Democrats headed for a blood bath in 2022?

What a difference a year makes, huh?

The big race was obviously the Virginia Governor's race. Not only did the massive underdog (when this whole thing started) pull out a victory in Virginia, but Republicans at this point have pulled control of the Virginia House from the Democrats (who held a commanding advantage pre-election). This result overall constituted a double digit 12 point swing from a year ago.

Meanwhile, what was supposed to be a cakewalk in New Jersey ended up as a squeaker as the Democrat currently leads by 0.3% in a state that Joe Biden won by 16 points just a year ago. That is likely going to end up being approximately a 15 point swing from a year ago. An even more shocking result than what we see in Virginia.

But it wouldn't take a 15 point swing or even a 12 point swing to make a huge difference in the 2022 midterms. Even a 4-6 point swing would be devastating for the Democrats on a national scale considering the amount of races involved and the stakes. Obviously looking at things today, they might be ecstatic if they could keep the swing margins down around five points.

There will be thousands of people writing thousands of post-mortem stories about how the Democrats went wrong and how they correct it. But without an overall 180 degree turn from the directions they are heading in most every social and economic area they touch, making actual changes that matter will be tough.

The first problem is going to be that progressives are going to blame the moderates and the moderates are going to blame the progressives. Already heard calls from the far left that McAuliffe was just a Clintonian candidate who lost because he wasn't liberal enough. Yet Democrats in the mold of Manchin and Sinema will use these elections as evidence that the progressive agenda being pushed at a national level is electorally toxic.

If neither side is willing to back down, then much of the chaos that has represented the Biden tenure will continue. This is the worst case scenario. Nothing changes and the distrust between the left and the far left continues to boil over into 2022.

This is no time to get complacent. The right needs to double the efforts that served them last night, and go full-throttle complete destruction of the left. Scorched earth, take no prisoners. Do to them what they would gladly do to us, and drive them completely out of polite society.

The left is fucking EVIL. Treat it as such.

The early vote was double-counted in Hudson County. It has now been fixed, bringing Murphy's total down by 10,732 and Ciattarelli's by 2,842. Ciattarelli goes back up in the statewide tally:

Ciattarelli (R): 1,177,803 (49.6%)
Murphy (D) 1,177,108 (49.6%)

a squeaker - a jump ball - but I hope this holds

But from the New Yorker magazine.

Had Virginia’s been the only major election held last night, that might have been the story: a turn in the Republican Party, back toward its traditional self. But a second gubernatorial contest, in New Jersey, followed a similar pattern, suggesting deeper problems for the Democrats. The incumbent Democrat, Phil Murphy, won the 2017 election by fourteen percentage points—slightly less than the margin by which Biden defeated Trump in New Jersey in 2020. Murphy was expected to handily defeat his opponent, a former legislator from Raritan named Jack Ciattarelli, who campaigned largely by challenging Murphy’s response to the pandemic, but on Wednesday morning the race remained too close to call. This had nothing to do with Youngkin, and little to do with the culture-war issues that had surfaced in the Virginia race.

It is beginning to seem that Biden’s Presidency is in trouble. In the course of the summer, his public approval collapsed: in June, a little more than fifty per cent of voters approved of the job he was doing and a little more than forty per cent disapproved, but those numbers have now reversed. “Biden has nearly the worst approval ratings of any president on record at this stage of his presidency,” the Times election guru Nate Cohn tweeted late last night. “Just something to keep in mind if you’re struggling to understand what happened tonight.” Exactly why what seemed a popular Presidency has lost so much support has been hard to pinpoint, even for professionals. There are mundane factors (gas prices spiked this summer) and ideological ones (the Republicans have been raising a ruckus over progressive positions on schools, crime, and homelessness). But the scale of the votes last night hinted at a simpler dynamic, in which Democrats control most political institutions but have been unable to effectively direct them. The President’s entire domestic agenda has seemed more or less stuck on Joe Manchin’s houseboat; his Independence Day declaration of freedom from the coronavirus pandemic immediately proved premature.

As the high turnout numbers in red districts demonstrated, Republicans were motivated to vote against Democratic control. But what exactly were Democrats meant to vote for?

Biden’s coalition suddenly seems fragile. Without the soldering presence of the fear of Trump, it is vulnerable to being pulled apart, with college-educated Democrats on one side and working class ones on the other, or progressives on one side and moderate suburbanites on the other. In retrospect, the panics that dominated Fox News this summer—over critical race theory, the crisis at the border, and crime in the cities—look almost algorithmic, a conservative movement testing the familiar wedge issues to see what worked. During the 2020 Democratic Presidential primaries, there was a lot of hopeful talk that the long post-Reagan conservative regime had reached its breaking point, that younger voters were spurring a transition to a new, more progressive era. Tuesday’s elections were off-year contests in just two states. But they supplied a point of skepticism. That generational change may be less powerful, at least for now, than the pattern of education polarization, in which voters with a college education are trending toward the Democrats and those without one toward the Republicans. Take away Trump, even for a moment, and maybe American politics have not changed so much at all.

C.H. Truth said...

Here is the simple reality that Roger and others on the left simply do not seem to grasp.

It was the electorate, the voters, the parents, the people who have been upset with CRT in schools, lockdowns, mandates, and the entire woke culture. The voters are concerned with inflation, Government spending, and the economy. It's the people who are no longer convinced that the "new approach" by Biden in terms of Covid is any better than the old response, and it might be worse.

These were the concerns drafted by the voters.

The GOP reacted to these concerns while the Democrats fought against them.

Yes, the GOP in general is better aligned with these concerns. But this was not a huge portion of the American population being "gaslighted" by dishonest politicians scaring them about race. People are not that stupid and actually do have the ability to occasionally think for themselves and garner concerns that are real for them.

This was not about "messaging" but about actually reacting to what it happening in the country today. You could put every influential leader in history, wrap them all into one person, and that collective messaging is not going to change people's minds when it comes to their children, their pocketbook, or their health.

If Democrats move forward with the false belief that this is about messaging or about better candidates, then they will be rolled over in 2022. They need to fundamentally change their behavior and their support for fringe concepts that might have power within the social media and regular media realms, but are completely rejected by many Americans in the real world.

Just because Facebook decides what it legitimate or not, doesn't mean that people take Facebook on those decisions. The public is simply smarter than that. Smarter than FB and Twitter. Know better than to trust what CNN tells them.

Remember Gunsmoke? We watched it every episode when I was a kid in South Dakota that has a history like it.

The Supreme Court's justices, citing the "right to bear arms" in the 2nd Amendment, sounded ready Wednesday to strike down laws in New York and California that deny most gun owners permits to carry concealed guns in public.

Most of the justices said people who live in "high-crime areas" and fear for their safety should be allowed to carry a gun for self defense. And they said this applies equally to people who live in cities as well as in rural areas.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. pointed to "ordinary, hard-working people who work late at night in Manhattan" and are "scared to death" as they head home. "How is it consistent with the core right to self defense" if they are denied a permit to have a gun with them, he asked.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh agreed. If people say, "I live in a violent area, and I want to be able to defend myself," the 2nd Amendment suggests they have a right to carry a gun for self defense.

It's true, and once again you are caught in a LIE -

The phrase "Critical Race Theory" appears on the Virginia Department of Education website despite Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s repeated claims the curriculum is not taught in Virginia.

On the Virginia Department of Education website, several examples of the department promoting Critical Race Theory can be found, including a presentation from 2015, when Terry McAullife was governor, that encourages teachers to "embrace Critical Race Theory" in "order to re-engineer attitudes and belief systems."

Additionally, superintendent memo 050-19 can be found on the site from February 2019 promoting both Critical Race Theory and the idea of "white fragility."

Also in 2019, under Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane sent a memo to Virginia public schools endorsing "Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education," as an important "tool" that can "further spur developments in education."

City Journal’s Christopher Rufo detailed the revelations in a Twitter thread Saturday taking issues with McAuliffe’s claims that Critical Race Theory is a "racist dog whistle" that has "never been taught in Virginia."

Rufo also posted screenshots from the department’s website citing Critical Race Theory in Education" as a "best practice."

"It's not taught in Virginia and it's never been taught in Virginia," McAuliffe said earlier this month about the controversial curriculum which teaches that the United States is fundamentally racist. "And as I've said this a lot, it's a dog whistle. It's racial, it's division and it's used by Glenn Youngkin and others, it's the same thing with Trump and the border wall, to divide people. We should not be dividing people in school."

Gee Roger....

Why is it that you believe that you are right about what is being taught in these schools and the parent with children in those schools are wrong?

Do you have a child in school?

Have you personally seen the curriculum?

Because as our children started attending school remotely and doing most of their work on their own and at home, we as parents got to see what is being taught. I can certainly tell you that my own son learned a fraction of what he should have for most of his junior and senior years and that what some of these teachers were teaching had little resemblance to the subject matter I was taught when I was a child.

Now my community is fairly conservative, but I have plenty of friends who are parents from the rest of the twin cities areas, and we all saw first hand what was being taught. Some of it around the edges, but some of it was in your face. Pretty much to a person (or parent) we believe that the kids should be just taught the curriculum that they should be taught, not the other nonsense that the teachers want to teach.

But of course... you are a genius who lives in a nursing home.

So you would know much better about what is happening in schools than someone who just had a child graduate from high school and saw it first hand.

Jim Crow is back forever

Senate Republicans have once again blocked Democrats’ latest attempt to pass significant voting rights legislation, this time thwarting a bipartisan compromise on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

With Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over the chamber, the bill failed, 50-49, marking the second time Republicans have filibustered voting rights legislation in the last two weeks, and the fourth time this year.

Named for the late Georgia Congressman and staunch voting rights advocate, the bill aims to restore portions of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, including notably once again requiring “preclearance” from the Justice Department or federal courts before states and jurisdictions can enact voting restrictions.

That provision of the law was gutted by the Supreme Court’s 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder. Another provision the bill, which aims to boost protections against discrimination, was limited by the high court’s decision in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee earlier this year.

The bill was Democrats’ latest attempt to beat back restrictive voting measures being introduced and enacted in Republican-led statehouses across the country.

Worse.

We're teaching our children to hate each other.

We're teaching our white kids that they are racist, that their racism is systemic and inherent, and like it's some sort of newfound original sin that must be addressed.

The fact is it's none of those things, and none of those things are relevant if your stated intent is to teach the history of racism and slavery in America.

I've had the honor and the pleasure of being a parent, and one of the most intriguing things I witnessed early on was when my son was very small and in day care. He was in with kids from every race, color and creed, and they interacted with zero awareness of each others physical differences. None. Playdates were arranged, I met parents from all walks of life, and with some of the parents I remain friends to this day.

Black and brown parents alky. BOO!

The insistence to indoctrinate our children with the evil and repulsive poison peddled by scumbag grifters like Henry Rogers X is purely to serve a political end. You can at least admit THAT much.

What happened last night was the natural reaction that results when you come between a parent and their child. And then you LIE about it. Or you attack a parent whose child was RAPED in school and you lie and deny it.

I'm surprised at the restraint the parents showed. Considering the evil that politicians and school board members visited upon our kids there easily could've been bloodshed and a lot of it.

As a citizen there is a lot of things my government and elected representatives can do to me and I have to suck it up and accept it.

But DO NOT fuck with my child. EVER.

No Roger... but thanks for proving you cannot make your argument without strawman and hyperbole.

Parents (as in pretty much every parent I know) wants the kids to be taught what we were taught when we were in school and what billions of children are being taught all around the globe. Kids in China are not spending their school day learning about race. Kids in India are not spending their day learning about privilege or oppression.

Children across the globe are being taught what our children should be taught. Reading, writing, Math, Science, actual history, and whatever other classes they choose to take as electives. Our english teachers should not be grading on the political content of a paper. Our history teachers should not be trying to provide their personal opinion on how History might impact 2021.

They should simply be taught actually subject matter that will allow American children to compete with a child growing up in China or India. Those kids graduate knowing calculus, scientific theories, and computer programming skills. Our kids are lucky if some of the read at an 8th grade level. But hey, they know lots of stuff about social issues that are irrelevant to actually getting a job or living in society.

I work with people from all over the world. Both as colleagues and with customers. I routinely am trying to calculate time zone differences between here and India or here and the Philippines. Or here and the Middle East. I can assure you that nobody gives a bigger crap what race I am or what I think about historical oppression. If I brought that shit up, I would be instantly fired.

What Happened to the Party of Limited Government?I’m old enough to remember when the Republican Party stood for limited government – when Ronald Reagan thundered “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Today’s Republican Party, while still claiming to stand for limited government, stands for government intrusion and social
control everywhere:

Republican governors ban masks in schools.

Republican states outlaw abortions.

Republican lawmakers prohibit teachers from teaching about America’s racist past.

Republican legislators force transgender students to play sports and use bathrooms according to their assigned gender at birth.

And across the country, Republican lawmakers are making it harder for people to vote.

This is not limited government, folks. This is social control. Republicans have a particular ideology and are determined to impose that ideology on citizens holding different views and values.

This is not about freedom, either. Just the opposite: It’s Republicans denying people their freedoms: The freedom to be safe from COVID. Freedom over their own bodies. The freedom to learn the truth about our history. The freedom to vote and participate in our democracy.

Once, Republicans had a coherent view about individual liberties and limiting the role of government. That’s not to say this ideology was beneficial to the country – far from it. But it was coherent, and they were committed to it.
Now, they only want to get reelected.

They are misusing government to advance a narrow and restrictive set of values — intruding on the most intimate acts, and banning what’s necessary for people to exercise their most basic freedoms.

This is not mere hypocrisy. The Republican Party now poses a clear and present threat even to the values it once espoused.

Bergen county went about 57-41 Biden over Trump. About 16 points.

This morning, it shows that Murphy is winning Bergon 52 to 48 or about four points.

That doesn't seem too far off the mark. But I would have to do a look see to find out if these numbers are in line with other Counties in the area in terms of turnout.

Pelosi is splitting up the two bills the BBB and the infrastructure bill. If she can get enough support.

Punchbowl

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is slamming her foot on the gas pedal, looking to pass both the Build Back Better Act and the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill this week.

In doing so, Pelosi is asking her House Democratic Caucus to vote for a bill with an uncertain future in order to jumpstart the long-delayed reconciliation process.

She’s also attempting to brush aside a whole host of concerns from within the caucus. Moderates are publicly worried about immigration-related provisions and the budgetary impact of the legislation -- but really have concerns that are broader than that. Progressives still want assurances from the Senate that the BBB will survive the chamber intact -- and those assurances are impossible to give.

And most importantly, as we wrote about in the Midday edition, the Senate and the House are heading in two different directions. The House has decided that it can’t wait for Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) to agree with every provision in their bill. So inaction is no longer an option.

The House Rules Committee is meeting this evening on the 2,000-page plus “manager’s amendment” to the reconciliation package with the aim of reporting out a rule governing floor debate on the legislation. Pelosi’s hope here is to have the House vote on reconciliation first and then the bipartisan infrastructure bill. These votes will either happen on the same day or on successive days.

When that will be isn’t clear yet. It doesn’t feel like Thursday -- at least not at this point.

Pelosi is essentially betting that Democrats will heed her call to move forward on both bills, understanding that the Senate will change the reconciliation package in the coming weeks while the infrastructure bill heads straight to President Joe Biden’s desk.

The House Democratic leadership is in the midst of whipping this vote right now. There are those in the leadership who think getting to 218 on the BBB will be near impossible this week.

She knows that they have to get something done!

Republican governors ban masks [mandates] in schools.

Roger when you lie about school mask mandates you lose the argument.

Republican governors are not “banning masks”, they are returning the right of parents to make that decision for their children.
That is the very definition of limiting government.

Republican states outlaw abortions.

As they outlaw murder. And that’s what abortion is functionally equivalent to.
