Generally the Democrats go into a fairly even election running ahead by three four points in the generic ballot. Republicans always seem to do several points better than they are running. Obviously if you look at the average, that is a good score for Republicans. But if you simply look at the last couple of polls, that would lead us to a beating of epic proportions. 

Democrats are still reeling from the losses last week. The arguments as to what was the underlying root cause of the drubbing are raging. To some degree we can just assume that Democrats will not help themselves over the next few months. They may or may not pass another trillion dollar bill, but the reality at this point is that the bill is not that popular and especially not popular with the sorts of independents that swung the last election.
