According to our results, countries are expected to see a decline in new COVID-19 cases during summer and a resurgence during winter. However, our results do not imply that the disease will vanish during summer or will not affect countries close to the equator. If it takes three shots to be fully vaccinated in 2022, will it take four shots in 2023? Five shots in 2024, and so on?
Covid is mutating in the usual direction, that is, becoming less dangerous but likely more contagious. Before long I think it will be more or less indistinguishable from the seasonal flu of years past.
The seasonal flu bug kills tens of thousands of Americans every year. Nevertheless, until now, no one thought it would be either reasonable or constitutional for the federal government to require annual flu shots. Nor has anyone suggested that those who have not gotten the annual flu shot should be barred from access to jobs, restaurants and public venues. This is one more instance of how government at all levels has used covid as a pretext to extend government power into the hitherto-private sphere of everyone’s health. Pfizer will submit full data on Covid treatment pill to the FDA in a few days, CEO says
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said he’s confident the full results from the clinical trials will show that the oral antiviral pill, Paxlovid, reduces Covid hospitalization and death by 89%.

WASHINGTON — Conflicts with rival superpowers loom, while the vitriol of American politics shows no sign of abating. That was the context Thursday as President Biden opened his two-day global Summit for Democracy, with both international and domestic institutions appearing as fragile as they have ever been since Biden arrived in Washington as a young legislator in the early 1970s.
“Democracy needs champions,” Biden said in his opening remarks, speaking to the leaders of 110 nations over a video link. Some of those attendees — Sweden, for example — are considered among the best-functioning democracies in the world. Others, like Israel, have struggled to maintain a functioning democracy in the face of corruption and other threats. And a few, including Poland, have taken the perilous slide back into authoritarianism.
“In my view, this is the defining challenge of our time,” Biden said as Secretary of State Antony Blinken sat with him at a U-shaped desk, which faced a screen on which the images of foreign leaders were tiled. A senior administration official told reporters ahead of the summit that next year the gathering would be held in person. The official added that this year the themes would be “defending against authoritarianism, fighting corruption and advancing respect for human rights.”
Foreign crises have dominated Biden’s agenda in recent days.
Earlier this week, the White House said it would enact a “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing Olympics over China’s treatment of Uyghurs, a Muslim population that has been forced into labor camps and subjected to other brutal measures.
And on Wednesday the president met virtually with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, warning him of consequences that would result from an invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
China and Russia were not invited to the democracy summit. Neither were Turkey or Hungary. The latter country’s strongman leader, Viktor Orbán, has enchanted some American conservatives with his nationalist, anti-immigration rhetoric.
Defining democracy as “fragile” but “inherently resilient,” Biden pitched himself as the leader of a global renewal, even as Washington itself continues to attract political extremism. Time and again, the president has argued that passage of his ambitious — and expensive — domestic agenda is necessary to prove that even if democratic governments can be rancorous and divisive, they are nevertheless superior to authoritarian regimes like those in Moscow and Beijing.
“The United States is approaching the summit from a place of humility,” a senior administration official said on Thursday morning. The administration announced it would seek $424 million for “democratic renewal” programs abroad that would include strengthening independent media outlets, combating corruption and otherwise encouraging democracy, in part by promoting greater internet access.
At the same time, the Office of Management and Budget sent a notice in support of a House of Representatives measure known as the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which seeks to prevent a president from abusing the broad, complex and sometimes vague powers of the Oval Office.
“Our constitutional structure is designed to preserve democracy and prevent authoritarianism,” the OMB notice said.
“That promise is imperiled when a President
places himself above the law,
disregards the separation of powers,
retaliates against legitimate whistleblowers,
allows corruption to take hold,
or enables foreign interference in our elections.”
The reference is plainly to Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, who courted foreign strongmen like Putin while taking steps to subvert democracy at home, according to his critics. It has fallen to Biden to restore the pre-Trump order and, in his view, the image of American leadership that Trump tarnished.
“Democracy’s hard,” the president said. “We all know that.”

People in counties that voted for Donald Trump are nearly three times more likely to die from Covid-19 than those who live in counties that voted for Joe Biden, according to a new study by National Public Radio.
NPR examined deaths per 100,000 people in about 3,000 counties across the US since May 2021. According to NPR, 1 May was chosen as the start date as it is roughly the time when vaccines became universally available to adults.
The study found that areas that voted for Trump by at least 60% in November 2020 had death rates 2.7 times higher than counties that voted heavily for Biden.
The study also found that counties that voted for Trump by an even higher percentage had lower vaccination rates and higher Covid-19 death rates.
Charles Gaba, an independent analyst who helped review NPR’s methodology, said that in October, the reddest 10th of the country saw death rates SIX TIMES HIGHER than the bluest 10th.
“Those numbers have dropped slightly in recent weeks,” he said. “It’s back down to 5.5 times higher.”

Hawaii, Nebraska and Alaska were excluded from the study because they either do not report election results by county or do not report county-level vaccine data.

People in rural Republican areas, and white Republicans in general, tend to be more resistant to getting vaccinated. According to the latest data from the Kaiser Family Fund, the rate of Republican Covid vaccination has plateaued at 59%, while 91% of Democrats have been vaccinated.
Republicans have been found to be more likely to believe misinformation about Covid and vaccines. According to KFF, 94% of Republicans think one or more false statements about Covid and vaccines might be true, and 46% believe four or more statements might be true. Only 14% of Democrats believe four or more false statements about the virus.
The most widely believed false statement is that the government is exaggerating the number of Covid deaths.
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 788,000 people have died of Covid in the US.
Numerous Republican governors have dismissed concerns about low vaccination rates and pushed for ending public health measures such as mask wearing and social distancing in favor of reopening businesses.
“We’ve seen lower levels of personal worry among Republicans who remain unvaccinated,” Liz Hamel, vice-president of public opinion and survey research at KFF, told NPR. “That’s a real contrast with what we saw in communities of color, where there was a high level of worry about getting sick.”

The conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty tried -- but failed -- to come up with evidence that Donald Trump won his election in the state.
The organization conducted a 10-month investigation parallel to one by Republican state legislators and found that certain election procedures might not have been adequately followed, but found nothing to support Trump's claims that he should have won Wisconsin's electors, reported the Washington Post.
“There was no evidence of widespread voter fraud,” the report states. “In all likelihood, more eligible voters cast ballots for Joe Biden than Donald Trump. We found little direct evidence of fraud, and for the most part, an analysis of the results and voting patterns does not give rise to an inference of fraud.”
The report found that more than 23,000 votes “did not comply with existing legal requirements,” which is indeed a total higher than the 20,608-vote margin Biden tallied over Trump, but the organization found no reason to conclude the result would have been different without those votes.

Opponents of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was recently completed, argue it would make Russia less reliant on the Ukrainian gas pipeline network, potentially stripping a key deterrent to invasion, according to The Wilson Center.
