So being fully vaccinated is no longer fully vaccinated?
As of just a few days ago only about 15% of Americans have gotten a booster shot. Now as Omicron starts to spread we are being told that the other 85% are not really "fully vaccinated" in terms of being protected against this latest variant. Suddenly being vaccinated is almost like being unvaccinated. The issue, of course, is that the current variant seems to be pretty much ignoring the vaccine and spreading as quickly among the vaccinated as it is among the unvaccinated.
Now we are only about 3-4 weeks into the Omicron variant. I find it dubious that anyone actually has any reliable data to make a valuable claim as to how this variant will react to vaccinations, boosters or anything else. Information coming from other parts of the world suggests that the current vaccinations are not preventing either the infection or spread. Only about 15% of the US population has received a booster (and it is lower in other parts of the world) so we are sketchy in that area as well.
3-4 weeks and 15% does not a very accurate prediction make. I simply don't buy that our scientific community has come to any real conclusions other than the argument that we are better off safe than sorry? Do they really expect us to believe that they understand this variant so quickly when we really still haven't seemed to have figured out how to stop the orignal virus.
Should you get the booster? Sure, if you are so inclined to do so. But I think it would be dishonest to make any conclusions already about the effectiveness of the booster against this variant. Generally these things take months if not years to figure out, not days...

We've literally just been getting information on this variant here in the US for less than a week. We still have 20 some states that have not reported a single Omicron infection. It can take 2-4 weeks before we know the full impact of an infection.

The cases could not throw the outcome into question even if all the potentially fraudulent votes were for Biden, which they were not, and even if those ballots were actually counted, which in most cases they were not.
The review also showed no collusion intended to rig the voting. Virtually every case was based on an individual acting alone to cast additional ballots.

The AP’s review of cases in the six battleground states found no evidence to support Trump’s various claims, which have included unsupported allegations that more votes were tallied than there are registered voters and that thousands of mail-in ballots were cast by people who are not on voter rolls. White House spokesman Andrew Bates said the AP’s reporting offered further proof that the election was fairly conducted and decided, contrary to Trump’s claims.
“Each time this dangerous but weak and fear-ridden conspiracy theory has been put forward, it has only cemented the truth more by being completely debunked — including at the hands of elections authorities from both parties across the nation, nonpartisan experts, and over 80 federal judges,” he said.
Experts say to pull off stealing a presidential election would require large numbers of people willing to risk prosecution, prison time and fines working in concert with election officials from both parties who are willing to look the other way. And everyone somehow would keep quiet about the whole affair.
“It would be the most extensive conspiracy in the history of planet Earth,” said David Becker, a senior trial attorney in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division during the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush who now directs the nonprofit Center for Election Innovation & Research.
Separate from the fraud allegations are claims by Trump and his allies that voting systems or ballot tallies were somehow manipulated to steal the election. Judges across the country, of both parties, dismissed those claims. That includes a federal judge in Michigan who ordered sanctions against attorneys allied with Trump for intending to create “confusion, commotion and chaos” in filing a lawsuit about the vote-counting process without checking for evidence to support the claims.

As the heavily mutated Omicron variant starts to spread across the U.S., more Donald Trump voters now say they oppose officials “encouraging” Americans to get vaccinated than say they support such encouragement, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
That’s a sharp reversal from earlier this fall, when 2020 Trump voters favored a policy of vaccine encouragement by a nearly 20-point margin — and a worrisome sign of declining trust in COVID-19 vaccination among conservatives at a time when public health officials say all adults should be scheduling their booster shots.

In September, Trump voters largely opposed vaccine mandates, and they continue to oppose them today. Still, a full 54 percent of Trump voters said back then that they would favor a gentler approach, that is, “encouraging as many people as possible to get vaccinated” in their area in response to “a new wave of COVID-19 cases” triggered by the hypercontagious Delta variant, which was beginning to spread. Just 35 percent were opposed.
But Yahoo News and YouGov’s latest survey of 1,558 U.S. adults, which was conducted from Dec. 9 to 13, found that nearly half of Trump voters (48 percent) now oppose encouraging vaccination in response to Omicron. Fewer (41 percent) say they support doing so.

The Arctic, which has been warming more than twice as fast as the global average, experienced an abnormally hot January-to-June time period that year. During those six months, monthly temperatures in Siberia were as high as 18.5 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) above average.
The warm temperatures helped fuel a large number of wildfires in the region, which started earlier than normal in 2020. Around half of the fires burned through areas with thawed peat soil — decomposed organic matter abundant in carbon. Fires on peatlands can release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. In June and July, fires in Arctic Russia released more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any entire previous fire season since records began in 2003.

The ice shelf was cracking up. Surveys showed warm ocean water eroding its underbelly. Satellite imagery revealed long, parallel fissures in the frozen expanse, like scratches from some clawed monster. One fracture grew so big, so fast, scientists took to calling it “the dagger.”
“It was hugely surprising to see things changing that fast,” said Erin Pettit. The Oregon State University glaciologist had chosen this spot for her Antarctic field research precisely because of its stability. While other parts of the infamous Thwaites Glacier crumbled, this wedge of floating ice acted as a brace, slowing the melt. It was supposed to be boring, durable, safe.
Now climate change has turned the ice shelf into a threat — to Pettit’s field work, and to the world.
Planet-warming pollution from burning fossil fuels and other human activities has already raised global temperatures more than 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit). But the effects are particularly profound at the poles, where rising temperatures have seriously undermined regions once locked in ice.
The Arctic could get more rain and less snow sooner than projected. Here’s why that matters.
In research presented this week at the world’s biggest earth science conference, Pettit showed that the Thwaites ice shelf could collapse within the next three to five years, unleashing a river of ice that could dramatically raise sea levels. Aerial surveys document how warmer conditions have allowed beavers to invade the Arctic tundra, flooding the landscape with their dams. Large commercial ships are increasingly infiltrating formerly frozen areas, disturbing wildlife and generating disastrous amounts of trash. In many Alaska Native communities, climate impacts compounded the hardships of the coronavirus pandemic, leading to food shortages among people who have lived off this land for thousands of years.
