Just when it seemed President Joe Biden could get no lower in the public's political esteem, a new I&I/TIPP Poll of Americans' preference for the 2024 Democratic presidential ballot is a shocker: Just over one out of five want Joe Biden back at the top of the Democrats' ticket in three years. Biden was named by just 22% of those asked, while 12% mentioned Vice President Kamala Harris, whose abrasive style, lack of preparation, and revolving-door personnel changes have drawn criticism even from formerly friendly Democrats and the left-leaning media.
The biggest problem for the Democrats is that they really have nobody ready to step up into the limelight right now. Barely a third of Democrats want to see Biden run again (an unheard of number for an incumbent) and less than half of that want to see Vice President Harris run. After that there isn't a single person over 4 percent.
Perhaps someone will step up over the next couple of years and fill the void. But it would have to be someone sort of out of left field. One name not on the list was Hillary Clinton. I doubt she would have made much of an impact in this poll, but you have to wonder if she might think about another run.

PARIS — A man suspected of being linked to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris on Tuesday, according to two officials close to the investigation.
Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared Oct. 2, 2018, after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. His killing sparked international outrage.
One of the officials said the man, of Saudi origin, was arrested at the airport's border control checkpoint Tuesday morning when he presented his passport to board a flight to the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
He was arrested on a warrant issued by Turkish authorities, the officials said.

The new bill doesn’t itself raise the debt ceiling, but instead sets up a procedure for an additional vote on the issue that would require a simple majority in the Senate, rather than the 60 votes needed for most legislation. While GOP support won’t be necessary for that second vote, at least 10 Republicans will need to support the legislation setting up the procedural agreement.
Mr. McConnell still has to make the pitch to members to ensure he will have enough support for the procedure, but members of GOP leadership indicated they were supportive of the agreement.

Top US scientist Anthony Fauci said Tuesday early indications suggested the Covid-19 Omicron variant was not worse than prior strains, and was possibly milder, while cautioning it would take weeks to judge its severity.
Speaking to AFP, President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor broke down the knowns and unknowns about Omicron into three major areas: transmissibility, how well it evades immunity from prior infection and vaccines, and severity of illness.
The new variant is "clearly highly transmissible," very likely more so than Delta, the current dominant global strain, Fauci said.
Accumulating epidemiological data from around the world also indicates re-infections are higher with Omicron and it is likely better at evading immunity from vaccination.
Fauci, the long-time director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said results from lab experiments that tested the potency of antibodies from current vaccines against Omicron should come in the "next few days to a week."
On the question of severity, "it almost certainly is not more severe than Delta," said Fauci.
"There is some suggestion that it might even be less severe, because when you look at some of the cohorts that are being followed in South Africa, the ratio between the number of infections and the number of hospitalizations seems to be less than with Delta."

As we reported earlier, it didn’t start well because the first release of information from the call wasn’t from Joe Biden or the U.S. as to what had gone on, but from the Russians — from Russian state media.
That’s just ridiculous that the Biden team doesn’t feel any obligation to provide anything to Americans. We’ve seen Biden cancel important press conferences like the ‘Three Amigos’ conference and cancel remarks on the supply chain crisis just moments before he was set to make them. The apparent compromise arrived eight days before a critical fiscal deadline, averting what would have been another political and economic crisis. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) each expressed a measure of confidence that they had the votes to proceed with their plans, while Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) put the House on track to adopt the measure Tuesday evening.
The deal itself does not directly raise the debt ceiling but rather sets up a smoother process that allows Democrats in the narrowly divided Senate to accomplish the task without GOP support. The two sides had been at loggerheads over the issue for months, with Republicans refusing to lend their must-have votes to raise the borrowing cap, in protest of President Biden’s economic agenda.
Democrats decried Republicans’ stance, especially since the party provided the votes necessary to address the debt ceiling even when President Donald Trump pursued policies they disliked. In the end, though, GOP lawmakers at least paved the way for Democrats to meet the fiscal deadline without risk of disruption or delay, potentially by raising the cap high enough to last through the 2022 midterms.

Yet the one thing about Trump that is hard to dismiss is his looming omnipresence. Love him or loathe him, it seems no one can get enough of him. Even the late-night less-than-comedians are at a loss without Trump to poke and laugh at. And still 95 percent of the media remains in outright, crazy opposition to Trump. No longer journalists by any definition of the term, they have become mad, rabid advocates, biased and obsessed in their vitriolic hatred, aired daily on fake news, psycho MSLSD and the Criminal News Network (CNN).
What we really need is a typology of Trumpism to see where people dot the current political landscape taking into account their relationship or distance from our 45th president, who might just be our 47th as well.
This is a feat, by the way, not accomplished since Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Of course, Cleveland remains the only president in American history to serve two nonconsecutive terms in office.
But for now, on with our typology.
The Left used to consist of liberals (80 percent), progressives (19 percent), and socialists, who were an infinitesimally tiny minority. Bill Clinton’s triangulation was meant as a triumph of the liberals over the progressives, the same recipe applied after the McGovern debacle of 1974. The Fabian wing of the socialists never stopped working, and things have changed and shifted completely, so that today only socialists and progressives count.
The old-line Democrats are dying off or have gone on to a fate like that of flies on sticky paper. (Andrew Cuomo, anyone?)
