Politico agrees with CHT

Why the threat to Roe may not save Democrats in 2022
The quick-setting gospel in Washington, D.C. last week was that any rollback of Roe v. Wade next year would trigger a Democratic revolt, placing abortion rights at the center of the midterm elections and sparking unprecedented turnout on the left.
But in the days since the Supreme Court’s oral arguments on a case from Mississippi, a more sober and nuanced assessment has begun to settle in. Interviews with more than a dozen Democratic strategists, pollsters and officials reveal skepticism that the court’s decision will dramatically alter the midterm landscape unless — and perhaps not even then — Roe is completely overturned. Privately, several Democratic strategists have suggested the usefulness of any decision on abortion next year will be limited, and some may advise their clients not to focus on abortion rights at all.
Some of that thinking is colored by Virginia’s gubernatorial race earlier this year. After the Supreme Court allowed a law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy to take effect in Texas, the party was so sure abortion would resonate with voters that Democrat Terry McAuliffe made it a centerpiece of his campaign, saying "it will be a huge motivator for individuals to come out and vote.”
By the time ballots were cast, just 8 percent of voters listed abortion as the most important issue facing Virginia, according to exit polls. Even worse for Democrats, of the people who cared most about the issue, a majority voted for the Republican, Glenn Youngkin.

Last week I did some research on the current political landscape of Abortion. I filtered through some recent polling, looked at some of the current opinions being shared, and even looked at some exit polling. I came to the conclusion that in spite of the conventional msm wisdom that a decision to uphold the Mississippi law would not harm the Republicans on any sort of national scale.

Politico takes it one step further and actually suggests that regardless of what the USSC does that abortion is a loser for Democrats in 2022.  They likely looked at the same stuff I did and came to the conclusion that very few people are militant about being pro-choice anymore. If anything the pro-life crowd has remained more consistently front and center.

I think it makes sense that you are seeing a rash of new abortion laws. These laws are not a crazy off in left field move by politicians willing to doom themselves with unpopular legislation. Rather these are laws that are actually going to be quite popular in the states that these politicians represent and in many ways were fueled by recent grass roots efforts on the pro-life side of things.

In other words, these laws are actually a reaction to a changing attitude in many places about abortion, or at least a reaction to the fact that the rabid pro-choicers are no longer as prevalent or relevent as they had been.

Roe either needs to be codified into law by democrats who won't because they're cowards...

...or...

...it needs to be returned to the states. Here in NY we went ahead and passed our own abortion law a couple years ago. Every state that does not have an abortion law on the books - pro or con - needs to get one.

I agreed with you Scott.

The Democratic candidates should not use this decision because like I said before they have to show how crazy most of Republicans look like crazy people who claim that Democrats are pedophiles and bin Laden supporters.

Repealing Roe v Wade will get a lot of women in the suburbs without campaigning on it.

Dow jumps 600 points as Monday rally accelerates, investors look past omicron threat

Wall Street set for mixed start as tech comes under pressure
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped on Monday and the Nasdaq Composite lagged as investors looked past the emerging threat from the omicron Covid-19 variant, rotating out of high-priced technology shares and into names linked to the recovering economy.

Here’s what was influencing the markets to start the week:

Shares linked to the economic reopening gained in Monday trading like energy, industrials and airlines.
Investors continued to sell tech stocks with relatively high valuations. Those shares dragged the market down to a losing week on Wall Street last week.
The 10-year Treasury yield rebounded after falling last week amid the omicron threat.
There’s a major shift underway at the Federal Reserve to bring about a faster end to its pandemic easing policies.
Bitcoin lost $10,000 since Friday, including a sudden drop overnight from Friday to Saturday. The move showed decreasing risk appetite and is hitting related tech stocks.

The Dow gained 600 points, or 1.7%, while the Nasdaq Composite clawed back losses from earlier in the morning and climbed 0.3%. The S&P 500 was higher by 1%.

High-priced tech shares were lower, continuing a de-risking theme in markets. Nvidia was off by 5% while Tesla fell 2%. Microsoft and Alphabet were also lower.

“Super-cap tech has been well bid on the expectation of ‘forever’ low rates and support,” said Tom Essaye, author of the Sevens Report, “but with the prospect of rates rising and this new Fed paradigm, we are seeing investors rotate out of tech and into sectors with better exposure to higher growth.”

He added that it was comments from the Fed that pulled the market back late last week, and not fears about the omicron variant.

“Tech pulled the entire market lower. Essentially, we are seeing a sort of Taper Tantrum 2.0 as markets react to a more hawkish Fed and rotate into sectors with more positive exposure to rising rates,” Essaye said.

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

Small cap names were hit especially hard, with the Russell 2000 falling 3.86% for the week.

“Despite our forecast for a flat year for the S&P 500...we are still bullish on pockets of the market, including small caps,” Bank of America said Friday in a note to clients. “Small caps are more domestic, more exposed to the services spending recovery, bigger beneficiaries of capex/reshoring and are inexpensive vs. large caps,” the firm added.

However, Bank of America said the potential upside for small caps hinges on Covid cases staying under control.

The omicron variant has now been discovered in at least 15 U.S. states, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told ABC News on Sunday. However, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said the initial data on the omicron variant is “encouraging,” in a CNN interview the same day, which was less than two weeks after the World Health Organization designated it as being “of concern.”

“Clearly, in South Africa, omicron has a transmission advantage,” Fauci told CNN. “Although it’s too early to make any definitive statements about it, thus far it does not look like there’s a great degree of severity to it.”

He helped Bill Clinton get elected twice

Political consultant James Carville cautioned Democrats against becoming involved in tit-for-tat arguments with extremist Republicans such as Reps. Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.).

“These are not quality people,” Carville told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday. “Let them dwell in their own stupidity.”

Carville, who advised former President Bill Clinton, said Democrats should instead focus on what they’re trying to accomplish for their districts and across the country.

The response cannot be, “We see your crazy and we’ll raise you another crazy,” Carville added. “The response is, ‘We’re not getting in this game.’”

Cooper asked about the danger of not responding.

“The danger is getting bogged down and spending 48 hours on a censure resolution,” Carville said. “These are just bad people. They are not going to change their behavior at all. And it doesn’t do you any good to engage with them.”

“Let them swim in their own slop,” he added.

Boebert sparked widespread anger this week with her Islamophobic attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). Gosar and Taylor Greene have both been stripped of their House committee assignments over social media posts attacking Democrats.

Scott, this is what I think about. Like I said put the crazy people as the face of the GOP. He's the worst minority leader in history.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy appears to have settled on a strategy to deal with a handful of Republican lawmakers who have stirred outrage with violent, racist and sometimes Islamophobic comments.

If you can’t police them, promote them.

The path to power for Republicans in Congress is now rooted in the capacity to generate outrage. The alarming language, and the fundraising haul it increasingly produces, is another example of how Donald Trump, the former president, has left his mark on politics, changing the way Republicans rise to influence and authority.

Success in Congress, once measured by bills passed and constituents reached, is now gauged in many ways by the ability to attract attention, even if it is negative as the GOP looks to reclaim a House majority next year by firing up Trump’s most ardent supporters.

That has helped elevate a group of far-right lawmakers — including Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona — whose inflammatory comments once would have made them pariahs.

Rather than face punishment for personal attacks that violate longstanding norms of Congress, they’ve been celebrated by conservatives, who have showered Boebert and Greene with campaign cash.

“We are not the fringe. We are the base of the party,” Greene, who has previously endorsed calls to assassinate prominent Democrats, said last week on a podcast hosted by former Trump adviser Steve Bannon.

Jim Jordan: Liberals must be destroyed because they are successors to 'evils' of Nazis and slavery

David Edwards

December 06, 2021

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said over the weekend that the "radical left" presents a danger to the country like the "evils" of Nazi Germany and slavery.

Jordan made the comments during a Saturday interview with Newsmax host Sebastian Gorka.

"Every third generation in this country has had to do something big," Jordan opined. "You think about the Founders and what they did when they declared why we're going to be an independent country, what they had to overcome, the greatest military in the world. They did it."

"Three generations later, Lincoln and the Americans then held the country together, got rid of the evil of slavery," he continued. "Three generations later, we defeated imperial Japan and Nazi Germany, the evils that those two countries represented and the greatest generation won that war."

According to Jordan, today's Democrats are similar to those historical challenges.

"Here we are three generations later and the assault is from the radical left," he insisted. "We have to step forward and do our part like previous generations of Americans have done. I think we're up to the task."

Politico has been interviewing DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST who are simply rejecting the idea that these decisions will help Democrats win votes. They literally believe the opposite and are telling Democrats to not bring up abortion (regardless).

The conventional media wisdom that millions of women will rise up and vote Democrat based on a court ruling against abortion rights is simply not true.

As the polling suggested in Virginia - a blue state with a tinge of purple - that abortion is not important to many people anymore and that of those who find it very important, they tend to be pro-life (not pro-choice).

But really curious if you read either what I wrote or the Politico article?

Or are we just going to make a big deal out of 2-3 that die every so often in a "mass shooting" because the cause of death is generally more politically exciting for the left?

rrb said...

From the Politico article -

“I wish we lived in a world where outrage mattered. But I think we live in a post-outrage world, and voters today are affected only by that which directly affects them, which is why the economy, affordability and cost of living is such a major issue for so many people. While a lot of people will express sympathy for that 12-year-old girl in Texas who got raped but no longer can terminate her pregnancy, it’s not what motivates them to go to the polls, sadly.”

I believe outrage still matters. It's just that outrage over abortion may have long ago jumped the shark. Abortion has been the solitary holy blessed sacrament of liberalism going on 50 years now. And starting with Robert Bork it's been the one reliable outrage for the left. Perhaps until now. When things are turning to shit all around you in every other aspect of American society, it's no surprise that the ability to abort a pregnancy has taken a free-fall down the leftist priority list.

The last opportunity the left had to afford the luxury of abortion outrage was the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. When times were great, everyone was flush, the economy was roaring, gas was cheap, and inflation was nowhere in sight.

It's ironic, by installing Biden the left might have royally fucked themselves out of the luxury of abortion.

And that's hilarious.

If anyone actually gave a shit the weekend murder numbers out of Chicago alone would matter. But they don't. Which also validates the fact that BLM was and is nothing but a shakedown.

If black lives truly did matter the black community SHOULD be marching on every major city in America every week. And they'd also be pro-life. Blacks could be around 29% of the population today were it not for all the black babies got run through the abortion mill at Margaret Sanger Enterprises.

I don't agree but that is how the law works

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) on Sunday said his state will enforce a law banning most abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned, days after the Supreme Court held a hearing on the Magnolia State’s 15-week abortion ban that could chip away at the landmark 1973 ruling.

A "snapback law" for abortion is currently in existence in Mississippi, which calls for most abortions in the state to be banned if Roe v. Wade is overturned. The only exemptions to the law would be rape and if the life of the mother is in danger.

At least rape abortion rights are allowed

The Real Coldheartedtruth said...

The conclusion of the article summed up the problem with Roe v Wade in the next election season. It will not matter in 2024...it will be old news.

Though some Democrats believe the most effective use of the Supreme Court’s decision next year may not be to highlight Democratic positions on abortion at all — but rather, to depict it as an issue Republicans are obsessed with at the expense of more pressing concerns like the economy and jobs.

Molly Murphy, a Democratic pollster who has studied public opinion about abortion extensively, said that rather than frame the issue as “Republicans are bad on abortion, Democrats are good on abortion,” Democrats should use the Supreme Court’s ruling next year — and likely bans that follow — as an opportunity to set up a different contrast: Between a Democratic Party focused on kitchen table issues and a Republican Party “that wants to ban abortion and put people in jail or slap them with onerous fines.” or vigilantes hunting women or even gun violence.

“That’s the construct that has proven to be powerful,” said Murphy, a partner at ALG Research, the firm that was President Joe Biden’s lead pollster in last year’s election.

That approach to Roe would seem to square with what Democratic operatives have learned from Virginia, and from their experience canvassing voters elsewhere. Democrats may care deeply about abortion rights, but there’s little evidence that a decision undercutting Roe next year would upend the election on its own.

Aimy Steele, the executive director of the New North Carolina project, which is working to register and turn out voters of color in a state that is home to one of a handful of Senate races that could determine the balance of power in the upper chamber in 2022, said the people her organization reaches out to have the economy, the coronavirus, health care and schools on their minds.

“This is what people are talking about as we knock their doors and talk to them on the phones and by text,” she said. “Many people care about Roe v. Wade. But does that translate into everyone voting and casting their ballot? … Absolutely not.”

Kitchen table issues are the reason why the Democrats have to pass the BBB legislation using the reconciliation system.

That's still unclear if or when..

The Biden administration said Monday it will not send an official U.S. delegation to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing – launching a "diplomatic boycott" aimed at rebuking China over its human rights abuses.

The decision represents a major geopolitical snub and comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing.

"The athletes on Team USA have our full support will be behind them 100% as we cheer them on from home will not be contributing to the fanfare of the games," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, notingthe administration "will not send any diplomatic or official representation ... given the PRC ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity ... and other human rights abuses."

"It cannot be business as usual," she continued.

The U.S. traditionally sends a roster of high-profile dignitaries, often led by the sitting vice president or the first lady, to attend Olympic events – including the opening and closing ceremonies. First lady Jill Biden led the U.S. delegation to the most recent Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

December 6, 2021 at 1:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

“The U.S. Department of Justice is throwing its weight into the legal fight over Texas’ newly drawn maps for Congress and the state House,” the Texas Tribune reports.

“The Biden administration on Monday announced it has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Texas, joining what’s expected to be a protracted fight over the political boundaries the state will use for elections to come. It joins a collection of individual voters and organizations representing voters of color that have already sued the state over maps that help solidify the GOP’s dominance while weakening the influence of voters of color.”

Another busy day

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Justice sued Texas over new redistricting maps Monday, saying the plans discriminate against voters in the state’s booming Latino and Black populations.

The lawsuit, filed in the Western District of Texas, claims the state violates part of the Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit notes that the vast majority of Texas’ population growth over the past decade came from Black, Latino and Asian people, but the new maps that state Republicans drew doesn’t give any of these communities new opportunities to choose their own representatives.

Instead, the maps pack Black and Latino communities into bizarre-shaped districts — a Dallas-area one is referred to as a “seahorse” shape — while preserving safe seats for white Republicans.

Biden to slap new sanctions on Russia to dissuade Putin from invading Ukraine

Sky Palma

December 06, 2021

The Biden administration is considering a set of sanctions against Russia designed to deter Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine, CNN reports. The new sanctions will target Putin's inner circle and Russian energy producers.

"The officials said final decisions hadn't been made on whether and when to apply the new sanctions, and said the Biden administration is currently in talks with European partners — many of whom have closer economic relationships to Russia — in the hopes of coordinating action," CNN's Kevin Liptak writes. "People familiar with the discussions said new economic sanctions could target a variety of sectors, including energy producers and Russian banks. The new sanctions could also go after Russia's sovereign debt."

Top Russian oligarchs will also be targeted by the sanctions by limiting their ability to travel as well as their access to banking and credit card systems.

Speaking to reports on Friday, Biden said he was "putting together what I believe to be the most comprehensive and meaningful set of initiatives to make it very, very difficult for Mr. Putin to go ahead and do what people are worried he may do."

sounds good to me. Not something put together by Trump quislings, but by real experts on how to handle this sort of thing.

And they are dealing with a President who takes briefings and listens and learns, carefully weighing information.

Unlike narcissistic Trump.

We'll see who rejects whom when it comes down to elections.

Well there are 19 Democrats in Congress who have decided not to wait around and find out if they get rejected. More of them likely on their way out too!

C.H. Truth said...

All the Democrats have to do is get out the message, showing up Republican lies for what they are, and making clear what the Democrats really are for, as opposed to what Republicans want.

In other words... try to make Americans stop looking at what is actually happening in the country and listen to some campaign rhetoric instead?

Is that the ticket Reverend?

FACT CHECK:
In reality, while the 78-year-old president’s cognitive abilities have been a topic of debate, no evidence has ever been shown to indicate that Biden suffers from dementia or is taking medication such as Namenda.

The claim that Biden had a so-called “bathroom accident” throughout the entire weekend is also without evidence.

Other journalists alleged that no such rumors had even circulated in Rome to begin with and had likely been made up on Twitter.

It’s likely that for many conservatives the truth doesn’t actually matter at the end of the day and that angering Biden supporers is the ultimate goal.

Yes, we know.

We can all see him attempt to talk and engage with us, Reverend.

I mean seriously. You cannot with a straight face tell us this guy is not in serious cognitive decline. Even Democrats are considering the probability that he cannot be on the 2024 ballot and some are even suggesting he should be replaced before midterms. While I doubt that latter is possible, the former certainly is.

Reverend...

You don't get to fact check opinion.

I don't need to know what sort of medications Joe Biden is taking to believe he is suffering from a cognitive decline. The opinions of people will not change because some liberal rag "fact checks" whether or not it has been proven that Joe Biden has dementia.

and even if he didn't poop his pants... and we don't know that he didn't.

The fact that most people find the allegation perfectly reasonable means that people expect that his physical nature right now is such that he just might lose his bowel control at any time.

The fact that Americans believe that the President of the United States just might poop his pants in the middle of an important international meeting is just more evidence of how the American public views the man.

A woman stood ready to testify that he did rape her at that age until she was frightened out of appearing and giving that testimony.
