A new article in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, says that after the current Omicron wave — perhaps by March — Covid-19 will continue, but the end of the pandemic is near.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla on Saturday said people getting COVID-19 booster shots every four to five months is "not a good scenario" and argued that an annual vaccine would be a better approach to fighting the virus.
Bourla told the Hebrew publication N12 News in an exclusive interview that the best way to combat COVID-19 is a vaccine that can be administered every year, not with boosters received every few months, according to Reuters.
"This will not be a good scenario," he said when asked about people getting booster shots every four to five months, per the wire service. "What I'm hoping [is] that we will have a vaccine that you will have to do once a year."
"Once a year - it is easier to convince people to do it. It is easier for people to remember," he continued. "So from a public health perspective, it is an ideal situation."
Bourla said Pfizer was seeking to create a vaccine that could counter omicron in addition to other strains of the virus "that could be a solution."
Amid a surge in cases driven by the omicron variant, the Biden administration is encouraging Americans to get booster shots in addition to a full initial regimen of the COVID-19 vaccine.
President Biden's chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, said last November he hopes that if enough people get boosted, Americans "will not necessarily need" to get vaccinated every six months to a year.
"We would hope - and this is something that we're looking at very carefully - that that third shot with the mRNA [vaccine] not only boosts you way up but increases the durability so that you will not necessarily need it every six months or a year," he said.
Pfizer rolled out its vaccine in late 2020 on emergency approval and in 2021, it became the only vaccine-maker to win full approval from the FDA. Pfizer is also the only company with authorization to give boosters to those aged 12 to 17 for the COVID-19 vaccine.
In the interview, Bourla also said Pfizer was working on a vaccine that could combat omicron.
"I do not know if we will have to use it, but we are working on the vaccine. We will know if it is the best solution only after we see the data," he said. "We know we will be able to mass-produce the vaccine, if necessary, because we are already building the infrastructure for production."

More than half of Americans view right-wing militia groups as a threat to the U.S., with a third saying they pose an "immediate and serious threat" to the country, according to a poll from The Economist/YouGov.
The poll was taken following the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an effort to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.
Members of known right-wing extremist groups including the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters have been charged in connection with the attack.

Sixty-six percent view right-wing militia groups as at least a minor threat, according to the poll, which surveyed 1,500 people in mid-January.
Of that number, 13 percent view the militia groups as a minor threat, 20 percent as a somewhat serious threat and 33 percent as an immediate and serious threat.
Advertisement Broken down by party affiliation, 57 percent of Democrats polled said they view right-wing militia groups as a serious and immediate threat, while just 15 percent of Republican respondents said the same.
But the majority of Republicans — 53 percent of those polled — did say that right-wing militia groups posed at least a minor threat to the U.S., with 17 percent saying they viewed them as a somewhat serious threat and 21 saying they viewed them as a minor threat.
Thirty-one percent of Republicans who responded to the poll said that such groups posed no threat to the country, however, compared with just 1 percent of Democrats.
The Oath Keepers are among the more well-known right-wing militia groups in the U.S. The group's founder, Stewart Rhodes, was recently arrested and, along with other members, charged with seditious conspiracy for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 uprising.
The poll found 52 percent of Americans surveyed had a very unfavorable opinion of the Oath Keepers.
Republican respondents were fairly evenly split, with 36 percent saying they viewed the group either somewhat or very unfavorably and 38 percent saying they viewed them either somewhat or very favorably.
In comparison, 75 percent of Democrats polled said they had a very unfavorable opinion of the Oath Keepers and an additional 5 percent said they had a somewhat unfavorable opinion.
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted Jan. 15-18 among 1,500 American citizens sampled randomly. The poll has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points when adjusted for weighting.
