But it turns out that it's not helping much with the Omicron variant
Lots of studies out there, and oddly most are coming from places other than the United States. The CDC seems to be falling behind in conducting studies and always seems to draw the same conclusions everytime even as other studies from the rest of the world run counter.
Right now it appears that Omicron is the dominant strain with upwards of 95% of positive Covid tests being Omicron. But there apparently is no real difference between the unvaccinated and the vaccinated when it comes to immunity. Meanwhile a fully vaccinated and boosted person is thought to only see about a 37 percent improvement in prevention of this latest variant. Oddly, those who are vaccinated actually seem more likely than those who are not vaccinated to be reinfected with the Omicron variant had they previously had caught another variant. It would appear that the vaccination might be undermining our natural immunity that would come from catching a previous variant.
As of today, there is not enough data to confirm or deny the repeated claims that being vaccinated or boosted prevents more serious illness, although everyone hopes that it does. But at this point, the statement of fact appears more wishful thinking than a scientific conclusion. I am sure we will have real data on that sometime soon, but most of what we hear from the White House quite literally is not something that can be linked directly to data.
Either way there seems to be a lot of people still dying right now, in spite of the concept that this is supposedly a much milder version of the disease. Obviously with the significant rise in cases, the percentage of those who are dying are smaller (or we would be seeing even more deaths). But the reality is that there are still plenty of people dying and it would appear by all accounts that this figure includes the unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, fully vaccinated, and even the boostered.
The continued argument that this is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated seems to be not just misleading but probably dead ass wrong. While this doesn't mean people shouldn't get vaccinated or boostered, it is dangerous to provide people with a suspect belief that they are safe if they just get the jab. More to the point, it is not fair to anyone making a personal medical decision to be provided bad information.

That seem untrue. Most observers seem ADAMANT that there is a significant difference between the severity of cases in unvacinnated people as compared to THE vaccinated, AND ESPECIALLY if the vaccinated have also received a booster.

Again, this informal, careless throwing out of what you prefer to think are facts is misleading. Most experts from around the world are finding that in those countries fortunate enough to have widespread vaccinations and boosters available, although the Omicron and other strains are still very contagious, the severity of illness and number of deaths is GREATLY reduced in those who have received both vaccinations and a booster.

Well Reverend...
Based on what "EVERYONE" has been stating, it does "seem" untrue.
I am simply suggesting that nobody so far has provided any tangible data. I believe it looks true, maybe. More cases, but not as many deaths in comparison.
But we are also hearing of the highest number of hospital beds being used since the beginning of the outbreak, so there is a mixed opinion here.
As I stated... I "hope" that it is true. But we probably need at least another 30 maybe even 60 days of data before we will know "for sure".

Then they should pay no attention to what you just wrote, because it seems not only PROBABLY but extremely LIKELY that people are much SAFER if they are fully vaccinated and have received at least one booster.
You are contributing to the problem, not the solution. And you were already doing that way back when the virus first began to appear and you and your wife eating out in Seattle made fun of people who were taking the virus more seriously than just regarding it as another form of the flu.
And thereafter you remained about as oblivious to the danger as Trump kept trying to be.
No tangible data?
I consider overfilled hospitals that are reporting that, for example, infections -- especially of Omicron -- are racing along, there are FAR less severe symptoms and dying AMONG PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN VACCINATED AND EVEN MORE SO IF THEY HAVE RECEIVED THE BOOSTER.
What better data do you need than that, for Pete's sake?

White men can't get away with murder of African Americans men anymore.
The three White men convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery nearly two years ago were sentenced Friday to life in prison, two of them without the possibility of parole.
Travis McMichael, his father Greg McMichael and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan all faced at least life in prison for the killing of Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man. They chased and cornered Arbery with their pickup trucks in suburban Satilla Shores near Brunswick, Ga. The five-minute pursuit ended with Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery, who was unarmed.
Prosecutors sought to remove the possibility of parole for the McMichaels, but not for Bryan, and the judge agreed. Members of Arbery’s family took the stand earlier Friday to tearfully urge the maximum penalty for all involved.
“Ahmaud never said a word to them,” Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said in court Friday. “He never threatened them. He just wanted to be left alone. They were fully committed to the crimes — let them be fully committed for the consequences.”
White House May Ship Test Kits As Soon As Next Week

“The White House is finalizing details with the U.S. Postal Service to deliver 500 million coronavirus test kits to households across the country, according to four people familiar with the plans, kick-starting a key part of President Biden’s response to the raging omicron variant,” the Washington Post reports.
“The administration will launch a website allowing individuals to request the rapid tests, the people said, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private planning sessions. Officials aim to begin shipping the kits by mid-January.”
ANOTHER REASON FOR CAUTIOUS HOPE. AND YES, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ERRED IN THINKING THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE NEEDED BECAUSE VARIANTS WERE NOT FORESEEN.

Biden can boast the best annual performance for the S&P 500 since the first term of President Barack Obama.
It’s been a volatile year for U.S. and global markets as the COVID-19 pandemic that gripped the world in 2020 moved into a new phase thanks to the omicron variant, but returns for equity investors have been strong on the back of fiscal and monetary policy that has kept interest rates at or near 0%.
Thus far, since taking the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2021, Democratic President Joe Biden can boast the best annual performance for the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.41% since the first term of President Barack Obama, who sought to extricate America from the Great Recession of 2008-09 along with then-Vice President Biden.
Near midday Friday, the S&P 500 was up over 25% in Biden’s first calendar year in office, compared with a 31.2% gain in the broad-market index under Obama.
The equity market return for Biden is better than President Donald Trump’s 18.1% for the same index in 2017.

Joe Biden President: Jan. 20, 2021-present
Market performance: 26.6% per year
Joe Biden was tops after his first 100 days in office, and even though the market's white-hot pace has cooled, he still remains ahead of the pack, in part thanks to the power of annualization. All of the major indexes currently sit at all-time highs, including the S&P 500, which is up 20.2% since Biden was sworn into office.
That translates into an eye-popping 26.6% annualized return.
"Since Jan. 20, if the stock market’s performance is any indication, Wall Street appears to approve of President Biden’s attempts to corral the Covid-19 virus and stimulate the economy," Sam Stovall, Chief Investment Strategist for CFRA, said amid Biden's first 100 days.
He added that Biden's return through April 28 puts him on pace for "the second strongest 100-day return of first-term presidential administrations since WWII, and well above the average of 1.9% since 1949."
"Only President Kennedy had a more joyous reception by Wall Street in 1961, but not by much," Stovall added. "Also, the 21 new all-time highs recorded by the S&P 500 since January 20th of this year slightly exceeded President Kennedy’s 20 count."
And if you prefer the Dow as a market benchmark? Biden's first 100 days were still among the best.
"The Dow has averaged 4.3% the first 100 days of a new president, while it has been higher the first 100 days in office for five of the past six presidents," Ryan Detrick, Chief Market Strategist for LPL Financial, said around the same time. The 8.6% performance in the Dow put President Biden ahead of all but three presidents since 1900: Franklin Roosevelt (75.1%), William Taft (13.8%) and Lyndon Johnson (9.2%).

Pence’s team is now cooperating with the Jan. 6 committee: report
Meaghan Ellis, AlterNet
January 07, 2022
Vice President Mike Pence's (R) office has reportedly made a effort to cooperate with the Jan. 6 committee as it continues its investigation into former President Donald Trump.
Per Axios, Pence's former chief of staff Marc Short, former press secretary Alyssa Farah and Keith Kellogg, are included on the list of individuals who have testified to share their accounts of what transpired.
According to an inside source, Short's decision to testimony reportedly came with approval from the former vice president. Inside sources have also revealed the most pertinent information has come from "second-and third-tier administration staff who were not directly involved but were at the White House on Jan. 6 and had access to top administration officials." Including the President at the time
The testimonies from Pence’s team have helped investigators "piece together" the series of events that occurred in the hours after the "Save America" rally at the White House. The Capitol was under attack for more than three hours on that day. As lawmakers feared for their lives while the angry mob of Trump supporters stormed the federal building, Trump was reportedly at the White House watching the day unfold on TV.
Speaking to Axios, Farah said, "From the two I was in, you could see how much information they already had. Those who are refusing to cooperate likely are doing so out of complete fealty to Donald Trump and not wanting to piss him off."
"But, secondarily, because they're realizing the committee has quite a bit more information than they realized," Farah added. "And their involvement is known to a much greater degree than they realized."
The committee is hoping to "tell the full story of Trump's actions, interactions and refusals to act during a 187-minute timeframe between calling his allies to march to the Capitol and telling them to go home."
The middle class in America are feeling screwed and are watching to see how Biden and the Dems can make the economy help THEM, not just the corporations and million/billionaires.
If Trump is reelected in November 2024 we will not survive.
Today, it has become heresy among conservatives to question Trump’s legacy. The Cabinet secretaries and White House aides who resigned in protest of his role in the violence now largely keep to themselves. Many corporations that vowed to halt donations to Republican lawmakers who voted to overturn the election have quietly reopened the contribution spigot. The congressional Republicans who angrily denounced the president after their headquarters was invaded have gone silent or even made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago, all but pretending it never happened.
“It’s a pretty sobering lesson about human nature,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, a Democrat who led the House managers prosecuting Trump in a Senate impeachment trial and now serves on the House select committee investigating Jan. 6.
In an interview, Raskin said he had ordered books about cults and deprogramming to try to understand his Republican colleagues. “It’s amazing to me how many of these Republican leaders have just fallen into line like lemmings,” he said. “I tell them when it’s all over, they’re only going to be fit to sell flowers and incense at Dulles Airport. They have basically surrendered their critical thinking skills.”
Raskin, who this week published “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy,” his own book on Jan. 6 and the subsequent Senate trial, at one point a year ago thought enough Republicans were fed up with Trump to convict him of high crimes and misdemeanors. In fact, just seven Republican senators voted to convict, short of the 17 required along with Democrats for a two-thirds majority, but it was the most bipartisan Senate vote in presidential impeachment history.

Well Reverend... the stock market almost always goes up. that is why your long term investments do so much better than the bank savings. The first year of the Trump Presidency the stock market would have been hitting new highs all the time. Same would hold true for Obama, Bush, Clinton.
When the stock market actually goes down, then that is a huge concern. Only a few times (when he had financial crisis) has the stock market really gone down.
So the fact that it hit "all time highs" is normal, not exceptional. Most every President could have made those similar claims. But Bush was not a better Market President than Clinton because the Market was "higher" when he was President... just that he came along "after" Clinton.
The only real comparison is how much better (percentage wise) the market is during a President's term. In this case Trump set bigger records quicker than Biden. I suspect Obama, Bush, and almost certainly Clinton did too.
So... whether or not you are gaslighted depends on whether or not you fell for the statement and believe it means something?
Justice sotomayor is certainly showing herself to be the dumbest on thr court. The shit she was saying today is alarming.
Oh and Reverend...
Instead of looking at the DJIA or even NASDQ - they are specifically referring to the S&P 500 which is one of the subsets of the larger market. It's plausible (but irrelevant) that 2021 might have done better in this subset of the market than it did with the overall market.
But that would be just cherry picking one section of the market rather than claiming that the "stock market" in general did better.

CDC director says US may see 'precipitous decline' in omicron cases like South Africa
But Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned the U.S. is a much bigger country.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said Friday there is a good chance that the U.S. will follow the "ice-pick"-shaped curve of South Africa's omicron surge of the COVID variant, but cautioned that it could roll through different parts of the country at various times, as previous waves have.
"I do think in places that we are seeing this really steep incline, that we may well see also a precipitous decline, but we're also a much bigger country than South Africa," Walensky said in a briefing with reporters.
"And so it may very well be that we see this ice-pick shape, but that is it travels across the country," she said.
MORE: COVID-19 live updates: Florida allowed up to 1 million tests to expire, official says
As far as the rapid spread of coronavirus cases contributing to that decline, Walensky said there was not yet conclusive data to say for sure that people who recovered from omicron would be protected against reinfection. The CDC is setting up studies to find out more, Walensky said.
There is data to show that previous delta infections do not fully protect against omicron infections, but that lab studies have shown omicron infection may protect against future delta infections, she said.
r that the guidelines stemmed from a need to keep critical workers in the field.
She said they predicted that the health care workforce would be "a harbinger of other things to come" in critical areas like pharmacies, police forces, EMTs, and other sectors.
Walensky defended the guidance as "grounded in science," but acknowledged that they were based largely on data from past variants because the CDC is "unlikely to have detailed data for omicron in exactly the same way for weeks to come."
