Between the lines: It turns out Putin's buildup was no feint. And the warnings from the White House were spot on.
President Biden said after the invasion began that Putin's "premeditated war ... will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering."U.S. intelligence had warned a large-scale invasion "could leave up to 50,000 civilians killed or wounded, decapitate the government in Kyiv within two days, and launch a humanitarian crisis with up to 5 million refugees fleeing the resulting chaos," The Washington Post reported Feb. 5.
What they're saying: Ukraine has severed diplomatic relations with Russia and is calling on all citizens to take up arms to defend the country against a full-scale invasion.
"Russia treacherously attacked our state in the morning, as Nazi Germany did in World War II years," Zelenskyy tweeted."As of today, our countries are on different sides of world history. Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and won't give up its freedom no matter what Moscow thinks."
______________________ We will prevail.
The invasion of Ukraine will probably be the worst decision since Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th in 1941.
You want the Russians to succeed, because you want to beat the Democratic candidates in the next election season.
And of course to claim that Putin waited until President Biden was elected President.
You are so predictable, because you are unable to think objectively. It's very common. But fortunately more people can think for themselves than you can imagine.
The invasion of Ukraine will probably be the worst decision since Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th in 1941.
FDR asked Congress to declare war
The President will support the Ukrainian people because they will prevail without a single American soldier.

This might be the same situation the Soviet Union had in Afghanistan...
Because they will not surrender to Putin and we will support them...
He has United more Republicans than before because he is not a divisive President.
An issue that unites Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) and Matt Gaetz (R–Fla.)? The unlikely pair is part of a large and bipartisan group of lawmakers demanding that President Joe Biden seek congressional approval before directly involving U.S. troops in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
For the record, Biden has not indicated that he wants U.S. troops to get involved. In fact, he's said directly the opposite, on multiple occasions. Military action is "not on the table," the president declared in early December. "There is not going to be any American forces moving into Ukraine," Biden said in January. "I will not send American servicemen to fight in Ukraine," Biden reiterated again on February 15.
But things can change quickly in times of crises. And the U.S. doesn't have a great track record on this front. (Congress hasn't formally declared war since World War II.) So, preemptively setting up an expectation that Biden must get congressional approval in this case is certainly a good thing.
"The American people, through their representatives in Congress, deserve to have a say before U.S. troops are placed in harm's way or the U.S. becomes involved in yet another foreign conflict," wrote 43 U.S. members of Congress in a February 22 letter to Biden.
The letter was signed by lawmakers across the ideological spectrum, including Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.) and Republican Reps. Thomas Massie (Ken.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), and Andy Biggs (Ariz.).
(It looks like we're seeing an exception to the rule that strongly bipartisan ideas are generally the worst!)
"As you evaluate your possible course of action to address the potential conflict between Russia and Ukraine, we write to reassert the war powers vested in Congress under the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973," their letter opens.
"If the ongoing situation compels you to introduce the brave men and women of our military into Ukraine … we ask that your decisions comport with the Constitution and our nation's laws by consulting with Congress to receive authorization before any such deployment," it goes on. "We underscore than an imminent or active attack by Russian would compel you, under Section 8(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to seek specific Congressional authorization if you aim to leave any remaining U.S. advisers, trainers, special forces, or other U.S. military personnel in areas of these imminent or active hostilities. You must also receive congressional approval before initiating any pre-emptive strike."
"The American people, through their representatives in Congress, deserve to have a say before U.S. troops are placed in harms (sic) way or the U.S. becomes involved in yet another foreign conflict," the lawmakers conclude.

Doubt it. My understanding is that there is some serious grassroots citizen resistance that has been formed. Sort of like militias with AK47s. Whether or not this will be enough (along with the Ukrainian Army) is a big question mark.
I still stand by one particular process. Had the world stuck with Sanctions against Saddam Hussein when he invaded Kuwait, there would no longer be a Kuwait (it would be part of Iraq). We stopped him because we put together a military force and international cooperation that the world had never seen before.
NATO and the United States does not have the stomach to offer real tangible military assistance, much less put boots on the ground. Putin knows this and the rest is just bluster. We cannot sanction our way out of this.
He has United more Republicans than before because he is not a divisive President.
You realize that your story implies that Republicans and Democrats are coming together to demand that Joe Biden do nothing on his own without their approval.
Which is basically a bipartisan admission that they do not trust Biden to make decisions on this issue.

First of all, NATO is a paper tiger without the US. And to that end, the US has zero national interest in engaging. We had leverage through energy production and dumb Fuck Joe pissed that away out of spite.
Fully half of ukraine is Pro-Russia. And in addition to keeping Ukraine out of NATO and from having nukes, Putin wants the rest of the warm-water Black Sea port he go a little of by annexing Crimea under 0linsky.
This threat has existed for a while now, most notably under 0linsky, and he sent them blankets instead of weapons, not taking this seriously AT ALL.
And as a result, NOW we have to worry about the re-construction of the Soviet Empire?
Fuck THAT.

I agree 100%
And again if we follow NATO 5 if Putin attacks a NATO ally, he should address Congress like FDR....
I just looked in Wikipedia for instances of Vindman being a POS.
Among other things, I found this: In his opening statement, Vindman assured his father that he had made the right decision in emigrating from the Soviet Union to the United States. Vindman stated, "In Russia, my act of ... offering public testimony involving the President would surely cost me my life. I am grateful for my father's brave act of hope 40 years ago and for the privilege of being an American citizen and public servant, where I can live free of fear for my and my family's safety. Dad, my sitting here today, in the U.S. Capitol talking to our elected officials is proof that you made the right decision forty years ago to leave the Soviet Union and come here to United States of America in search of a better life for our family. Do not worry, I will be fine for telling the truth."
About Vindman, I also found this: At his retirement, Vindman received the Legion of Merit. ~~~ Vindman's additional awards and decorations include the Purple Heart; Defense Meritorious Service Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster (2nd award); Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters (4th award); Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters (3rd award); National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award); Valorous Unit Award; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Navy Unit Commendation; National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation; and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He is a recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Ranger Tab; Basic Parachutist Badge; the Presidential Service Badge; and Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called Russia’s attack on Ukraine a “brutal act of war” and said he would convene a summit of leaders Friday following an activation of the alliance’s defense plans.
In Kyiv, the acrid smell of burning documents wafting from the windows of government buildings hung in the air. Restaurants, coffee shops and other businesses were closed. Reservists and soldiers with overnight bags were seen heading to their units.
On the city’s main Khreshchatyk avenue, veterans of the war against Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine, which has been waged since 2014, set up tents to sign up volunteers to fight. “There is a Russian threat,” said one of the veterans. “Our main task is to prevent panic, to prevent the destabilization of the situation in our city.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.N., Sergiy Kyslytsya, called on Mr. Nebenzya to assure the council there wouldn’t be a widespread war across Ukraine.
“The Russian Federation ought to relinquish responsibilities of the president of the Security Council, pass these responsibilities on to a legitimate member,” Mr. Kyslytsya said. “There is no purgatory for war criminals—they go straight to hell, ambassador.”
Hours earlier, Mr. Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader, made a Russian-language appeal to Russian citizens, saying his nation posed no threat to Russia and that responsibility for unleashing a conflict that could cause tens of thousands of deaths would lay squarely with Mr. Putin.
Mr. Zelensky, who is of Jewish origin, ridiculed Russian propaganda assertions that Ukraine was somehow beholden to neo-Nazis, pointing out that eight million Ukrainians died during World War II and that his own grandfather was a decorated Soviet officer at the time.
“They say that we are Nazis. But how can a people who sacrificed more than eight million people for the victory over Nazism be Nazi? How can I be a Nazi?” he said. “Tell that to my grandfather who spent the whole war in the Soviet army and died as a colonel in a free Ukraine.”
In Odessa on Thursday, Alexander Vernik, a 36-year-old entrepreneur with fashion-export and construction businesses, said he heard an explosion near the train station. “Of course people are panicked,” he said.
Yevhen Rachkovsky, 25, an Odessa filmmaker, said he had packed a go bag with documents, money and medicine when his sister called to warn him about news of impending Russian strikes. “We’ve been living under the pressure that something’s coming,” he said. “We understood that it’s happening. I’m kind of afraid, afraid for my family.”
Mark Warner (D., Va.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Mr. Putin had brought decades of general peace to an end with his illegal invasion. Mr. Warner said it was time to increase “the pain level” of sanctions and bolster NATO allies’ defenses.
“While there is still an opportunity for Russia to reverse course, we can no longer hold out hope that this standoff will be resolved peacefully,” Mr. Warner said. “Therefore, we must all, on both sides of the aisle and both sides of the Atlantic, work together to demonstrate to Putin that this aggression will not be allowed to go unpunished.”
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R., N.D.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said sanctions were needed months ago to ward off an invasion, but now, “we must implement strong, primary and secondary sanctions immediately.”
In neighboring Belarus, a close Russian ally where Moscow has also massed troops on Ukraine’s northern flank, the country’s authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, said negotiations were still possible to defuse the crisis.
“We are Slavs, three Slavic peoples,” Mr. Lukashenko told a meeting of security officials. “Let’s sit down and decide our fate for the future, forever.”

Russian celebrities react to attack on Ukraine: ‘History will judge everything’ A number of notable Russian celebrities – from top chess players to pop stars – denounced the country’s attack on Ukraine, although most stopped short from criticizing or even mentioning president Vladimir Putin by name.

“History has seen many Black Thursdays,” he wrote. “But today is blacker than the others.”
Valery Meladze, one of Russia’s most famous singers, released a video urging leaders to stop the fighting and sit down at a negotiating table.
“Today something happened that could and should never have happened,” he said in part. “History will judge everything one day. Now I want to beg you to stop military action and sit down to negotiate.”
Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian socialite and TV personality, shared a somber message to Instagram saying Russians “will be dealing with the consequences of today for many years to come.”
“Not on our land, yes. With our people, yes,” her post continued. “We are all now locked in this situation.”
Ivan Urgant, a Russian TV personality, actor and comedian, shared a simple message on Instagram: “Fear and pain. NO to war.”
The dissent was not limited to famous Russians.
Hundreds of people gathered in the center of Moscow on Thursday to protest against Russia's attack on Ukraine and many of the demonstrators were detained. Similar protests took place in other Russian cities, where activists were also arrested.
The Kremlin has banned all protests or large political gatherings and has warned that heavy penalties will follow those who do participate in such an event.
Reaction wasn’t uniform, however, as nearly five hundred pro-Kremlin supporters on Wednesday got together at St. Petersburg's main Palace Square to celebrate Russia’s recognition of rebel-controlled regions in Donbas, carrying flags of Russia and of the two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine.
"Donetsk Luhansk People's republics we are together,” read one sign; "We don't leave ours, Russia is Peace!" read another.

Question for the blog -
Can we name a US sanction against Russia that HAS EVER BEEN EFFECTIVE?
Just one, that's all I'm looking for here.
I've looked everywhere and have yet to find one.
Sanctions are meaningless bullshit. And Putin knows it.
How do you sanction the worlds 4th largest gold reserve, and a fucking MASSIVE foreign currency reserve?
Oh, and all the while Putin is working the back channel with China, Iran, etc.
So yeah. SANCTIONS!!! A foreign policy popcorn fart.
President Joe Biden said Thursday that the U.S. will introduce a new wave of sanctions against Russia in a broad effort to isolate Moscow from the global economy.
The president's said that the totality of the penalties will target trillions in assets and include specific measures against Russian elites and banks including state-owned VTB Bank. The White House has also authorized additional troops to be stationed in Germany as NATO allies look to bolster defenses in Europe, Biden said.
"Today I'm authorizing additional strong sanctions, and new limitations on what can be exported to Russia," Biden said. "This is going to impose a severe cost on the Russian economy both immediately and over time."
"I just spoke with the G-7 leaders this morning," Biden said Thursday afternoon. "And we're in full and total agreement: We will limit Russia's ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds, and yen to be part of the global economy. We'll limit their ability to do that."
Prior to Biden remarks, leaders of the Group of Seven nations said they "are appalled by and condemn" Russia's military aggression in Ukraine and promised to impose "severe and coordinated economic and financial sanctions" against the Kremlin.
Follow our live updates here.
Like other world leaders, Biden said U.S. sanctions against Russia will also restrict high-tech trade with Moscow to limit its access to semiconductors needed to manufacture artificial intelligence, aerospace and defense hardware. The U.K. and Canada both announced crackdowns on exports to Russia earlier Thursday.
Biden said that possible Russia conduct cyberattacks against U.S. companies or infrastructure would be met in kind.
"Our forces are not and will not be engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine. Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our NATO allies," Biden said. We will "defend every inch of NATO territory with the full force of American power."

The economic penalties come as Russian troops advance through Ukraine after embarked on a large-scale offensive of its neighbor early Thursday local time.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would launch a "special military operation" in Ukraine designed to check its military capacity and added that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territory.
The U.S. and its NATO allies say there's little to no evidence of military aggression from Ukraine and that Russian claims to the contrary serve as Moscow's pretext for invasion.

McCONNELL BACKS TOUGH SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA February 24, 2022 at 1:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 96 Comments
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that President Biden should increase sanctions against Russia “all the way up” after Moscow began a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, The Hill reports.
Said McConnell: “Ratchet the sanctions all the way up. Don’t hold any back. Every single available tough sanction should be employed and should be employed now.”
President Biden on Thursday declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin "will be a pariah on the international stage" for his unprovoked attack on Ukraine, and announced severe new sanctions that include sweeping export controls and a freeze on billions of dollars worth of Russian assets.
Why it matters: The new sanctions are coordinated with the G7 — countries that together make up 50% of the world's GDP — and are designed to "maximize a long-term impact on Russia and to minimize the impact on the United States and our allies."
"Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences," Biden said.Moments after Biden finished speaking, the Pentagon announced that an additional 7,000 U.S. troops would be deployed to Europe to shore up NATO's defenses.
Details: Sberbank — which is Russia's largest financial institution and holds nearly one-third of the overall Russian banking sector's assets — will be cut off from the U.S. financial system.
"Full-blocking" sanctions will be imposed on four additional Russian banks, freezing the U.S.-based assets of VTB, Bank Otkritie, Sovcombank OJSC, Novikombank and 34 subsidiaries.New debt restrictions will be imposed on 13 Russian state-owned enterprises and entities that together hold nearly $1.4 trillion in assets: Sberbank, AlfaBank, Credit Bank of Moscow, Gazprombank, Russian Agricultural Bank, Gazprom, Gazprom Neft, Transneft, Rostelecom, RusHydro, Alrosa, Sovcomflot, and Russian Railways.The U.S. will impose sweeping export controls on technologies critical to the Russian defense sector and broader economy, including semiconductors, telecommunication, encryption security, lasers, sensors, navigation, avionics and maritime technologies.Seven Russian elites and their family members who hold "some of the highest position of powers in the country" will also be sanctioned.
Zoom out: The European Union, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom plan similar actions, acting as a "force multiplier," according to the White House.
Between the lines: Biden did not announce that Russia would be disconnected from SWIFT, which is akin to the central nervous system for international financial transactions.
SWIFT sanctions were viewed as among the harshest under consideration, but some European allies feared that disconnecting Russian would cause collateral economic damage.Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted earlier Thursday: "Everyone who now doubts whether Russia should be banned from SWIFT has to understand that the blood of innocent Ukrainian men, women and children will be on their hands too."Pressed by a reporter, Biden said cutting Russia off from SWIFT is "always an option" but "right now that's not the position that the rest of Europe wishes to take."
The big picture: Biden said there is "a complete rupture right now in U.S. and Russia relations," and that sanctioning Putin himself remains on the table.
What he's saying: "The Russian military has begun a brutal assault on the people of Ukraine without provocation, without justification, without necessity. This is a pre-meditated attack. Vladimir Putin has been planning this for months, as we've been saying all along," Biden said.
Biden emphasized that U.S. forces "are not and will not be engaged in a conflict with Russia in Ukraine, and our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine but to reassure those allies in the east.""This aggression cannot go unanswered and if it did the consequences for America would be much worse. America stands up to bullies. We stand up to freedom."

Quite the opposite alky.
I never started a fight. Finished a few. The most memorable was when I was the new kid in a small Catholic School. A suburban school where I was the only farm kid. A wiseass bully started picking on me for exactly that reason. I stomped him AND his older brother into a fucking puddle in between classes one day. The taunting had gone on for several weeks and I had finally had enough.
No one fucked with the farm boy again and I suddenly had a whole new group of friends.
The President should not have the authority to declare war, except in emergency events like the Cuban missile crisis.
The Presidents have constitutional authority to send troops for a defined period of time before they are required to get a war declaration of a congressional authorization for military force.
We went into Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and several other place with no declaration of war and just an authorization of military action.
What this bipartisan group of Congressional members are looking to do is prevent Biden from committing any troops without their approval. This is not how it is supposed to work. Biden should have power to send troops for so many days.
But there is bipartisan agreement that Biden cannot be trusted to do so.

I stood up to a bully in 5th grade. At the location where most of our after school fights took place. We rolled around. Fairly even. Then I got on top of him, got one good shot in and coincidently a police officer drove by, slowed down, put on the sirens and we broke it up.
The next day the bully did not come to school and everyone said I beat him up so bad he couldn't come to school. Nobody messed with me... well at least till Jr High!

My last real high school fight was in 10th grade in the locker room. Kid took my street clothes out of my locker and my lock and put them on another locker and wasn't going to tell me where they were. I was still in gym clothes.
He tried to leave and I knocked all his books out of his hand and wouldn't let him pick them up. Tried to tackle me. Dumb move as I was a wrestler. Had him face down on the ground me on top. I took the time to take of his glasses before providing him with a black eye right before the Gym teacher broke us up.
Gym teacher pulled me off and took me to his office and made the other kid wait outside. I explained what happened, he made the kid show me where my clothes were, confirmed I could get them. That kid got a black eye and detention. I got my clothes back and a short lecture on how I could have handled it better.
it was good to be an three sport letter winner in gym class when you get into a fight with a dirt bag loser.
President Biden made the right decision yesterday. Allowing Putin's Nord Stream 2 to come online would have created multiple, cascading, and acute security crises for the United States and our European allies for generations to come. Today's announcement is critical to preventing such scenarios.

Hundreds of Russian Protesters Arrested February 24, 2022 at 4:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 160 Comments
“Shocked Russians turned out by the thousands Thursday to decry their country’s invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media,” the AP reports.
“Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were detained, at least 957 of them in Moscow.” ______
Putin has overestimated what the Russian people will tolerate. I hope this will continue and grow into a movement that demands his overthrow and the restoration of free speech and freedom of assembly in Russia (once guaranteed to them byh their constitution). The Russian people should never have let him take that from them. Demand it back! Demand he vacate his luxurious palace and pay back huge amounts of the billions he has stolen.
Even the democrat media is hammering the bumbling Biden for claiming that nobody expected sanctions to be a deterrent whem that's exactly what his administration was saying.
Biden is so inept and pathetic. Look for China to overrun Taiwan soon.
Biden is a disaster. An absolute disaster. That is very dangerous.
Can Russia Actually Control Ukraine? February 24, 2022 at 4:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 108 Comments
Retired Gen. David Petraeus talked to The Atlantic about the lessons from the U.S. occupation of Iraq:
“That question has to be one of those that is most unsettling in the back of President Putin’s mind and in the minds of his senior leaders. I was privileged to serve as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the invasion of Iraq and the first year there. Frankly, the fight to Baghdad, while tougher than many likely assessed it to be from afar, was pretty straightforward. But once the regime collapsed, we had nowhere near enough forces to prevent the terrible looting early on, and later we did not have enough to deal with the insurgent and extremist elements when they increased the violence dramatically in 2006 until we received the additional forces during the 18-month surge, together with the accompanying change in strategy and development of increasing numbers of reasonably competent Iraqi forces.”
“Let’s not forget that most Iraqis did initially welcome our liberation of the country from the brutal, kleptocratic Saddam Hussein regime. BUT Russians cannot expect to be applauded as they invade Ukraine.”
‘Two Nauseating, Fearful Pigs’ February 24, 2022 at 3:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 126 Comments
White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates lambasted former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir as “nauseating, fearful pigs” after Trump declared Putin’s actions against Ukraine “pretty smart.”
He added that their every “action is driven by their their own weakness and insecurity, rubbing their snouts together and celebrating as innocent people lose their lives.”
American Thinker wants to follow the same path as Germany in 1932.
Do we need Donald Trump back in charge, making decisions again? Of course we do.
What about the swamp, starting with the Pentagon? Are they working for us, protecting us, or are they worried about diversity, inclusion, and equity? The FBI — are they straight-arrow rank-and-file employees or are they as self-serving as the Comeys and McCabes and Wrays? Time to start with a fresh lineup. We need a new skipper named Trump. CIA, EPA, DoJ, IRS, etc., etc. We need a clean-sheet restart.
Because I have studied history this is how Adolf Hitler built Nazi Germany.

The problem in places like Ukraine is that there are people who are going to want to resist and then there are those who have always been either a little or a lot pro-Russia and even pro-Putin.
Reality is that there are many people from these former Soviet Union countries who miss the days of being a massive superpower. They will align themselves with those coming in to take over.
The problem in places like Ukraine is that there are people who are going to want to resist and then there are those who have always been either a little or a lot pro-Russia and even pro-Putin.

The two situations could not be more different.
Fact is, Putin is doing what he's doing because Biden's a fucking imbecile. Utterly destroying domestic energy production - energy that we could be exporting to Europe right fucking now - is off the table because Trump approved it therefore it must end.

1300 hours , Joe, My President will speak.
You are a liar about The President

Kyiv in Ukraine = Pearl Harbor.

Alexander Vindman, POS or American Hero?
I just looked in Wikipedia for instances of Vindman being a POS.
Among other things, I found this:
In his opening statement, Vindman assured his father that he had made the right decision in emigrating from the Soviet Union to the United States.

About Vindman, I also found this:
At his retirement, Vindman received the Legion of Merit.
~~~ Vindman's additional awards and decorations include the Purple Heart; Defense Meritorious Service Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster (2nd award); Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters (4th award); Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters (3rd award); National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award); Valorous Unit Award; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Navy Unit Commendation; National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation; and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He is a recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Ranger Tab; Basic Parachutist Badge; the Presidential Service Badge; and Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.
Vindman belongs in front of a firing squad.
Why are we so stupid as to willingly allow traitors and terrorists to infiltrate our Military and our Congress?
Wall Street Journal update
North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called Russia’s attack on Ukraine a “brutal act of war” and said he would convene a summit of leaders Friday following an activation of the alliance’s defense plans.
In Kyiv, the acrid smell of burning documents wafting from the windows of government buildings hung in the air. Restaurants, coffee shops and other businesses were closed. Reservists and soldiers with overnight bags were seen heading to their units.
On the city’s main Khreshchatyk avenue, veterans of the war against Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine, which has been waged since 2014, set up tents to sign up volunteers to fight. “There is a Russian threat,” said one of the veterans. “Our main task is to prevent panic, to prevent the destabilization of the situation in our city.
Joe is late to speak.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.N., Sergiy Kyslytsya, called on Mr. Nebenzya to assure the council there wouldn’t be a widespread war across Ukraine.
“The Russian Federation ought to relinquish responsibilities of the president of the Security Council, pass these responsibilities on to a legitimate member,” Mr. Kyslytsya said. “There is no purgatory for war criminals—they go straight to hell, ambassador.”
Hours earlier, Mr. Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader, made a Russian-language appeal to Russian citizens, saying his nation posed no threat to Russia and that responsibility for unleashing a conflict that could cause tens of thousands of deaths would lay squarely with Mr. Putin.
Mr. Zelensky, who is of Jewish origin, ridiculed Russian propaganda assertions that Ukraine was somehow beholden to neo-Nazis, pointing out that eight million Ukrainians died during World War II and that his own grandfather was a decorated Soviet officer at the time.
“They say that we are Nazis. But how can a people who sacrificed more than eight million people for the victory over Nazism be Nazi? How can I be a Nazi?” he said. “Tell that to my grandfather who spent the whole war in the Soviet army and died as a colonel in a free Ukraine.”
In Odessa on Thursday, Alexander Vernik, a 36-year-old entrepreneur with fashion-export and construction businesses, said he heard an explosion near the train station. “Of course people are panicked,” he said.
Yevhen Rachkovsky, 25, an Odessa filmmaker, said he had packed a go bag with documents, money and medicine when his sister called to warn him about news of impending Russian strikes. “We’ve been living under the pressure that something’s coming,” he said. “We understood that it’s happening. I’m kind of afraid, afraid for my family.”
Mark Warner (D., Va.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Mr. Putin had brought decades of general peace to an end with his illegal invasion. Mr. Warner said it was time to increase “the pain level” of sanctions and bolster NATO allies’ defenses.
“While there is still an opportunity for Russia to reverse course, we can no longer hold out hope that this standoff will be resolved peacefully,” Mr. Warner said. “Therefore, we must all, on both sides of the aisle and both sides of the Atlantic, work together to demonstrate to Putin that this aggression will not be allowed to go unpunished.”
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R., N.D.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said sanctions were needed months ago to ward off an invasion, but now, “we must implement strong, primary and secondary sanctions immediately.”
In neighboring Belarus, a close Russian ally where Moscow has also massed troops on Ukraine’s northern flank, the country’s authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, said negotiations were still possible to defuse the crisis.
“We are Slavs, three Slavic peoples,” Mr. Lukashenko told a meeting of security officials. “Let’s sit down and decide our fate for the future, forever.”
As Roger stated that Biden was "bringing unity between Republicans and Democrats" because both sides want to make sure Biden makes no military decisions without Congressional approval.
In other words, they are willing to unsurp Biden's constitutional right as President to engage the military in emergency situations. But because both Democrats and Republicans are "for" stopping Biden from acting on his own...
He sees that as a big "plus" for Biden?
Russian celebrities react to attack on Ukraine: ‘History will judge everything’
A number of notable Russian celebrities – from top chess players to pop stars – denounced the country’s attack on Ukraine, although most stopped short from criticizing or even mentioning president Vladimir Putin by name.
Yan Nepomniachtchi, a chess Grandmaster, shared a tweet on Thursday alongside the hashtag #saynotowar.
“History has seen many Black Thursdays,” he wrote. “But today is blacker than the others.”
Valery Meladze, one of Russia’s most famous singers, released a video urging leaders to stop the fighting and sit down at a negotiating table.
“Today something happened that could and should never have happened,” he said in part. “History will judge everything one day. Now I want to beg you to stop military action and sit down to negotiate.”
Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian socialite and TV personality, shared a somber message to Instagram saying Russians “will be dealing with the consequences of today for many years to come.”
“Not on our land, yes. With our people, yes,” her post continued. “We are all now locked in this situation.”
Ivan Urgant, a Russian TV personality, actor and comedian, shared a simple message on Instagram: “Fear and pain. NO to war.”
The dissent was not limited to famous Russians.
Hundreds of people gathered in the center of Moscow on Thursday to protest against Russia's attack on Ukraine and many of the demonstrators were detained. Similar protests took place in other Russian cities, where activists were also arrested.
The Kremlin has banned all protests or large political gatherings and has warned that heavy penalties will follow those who do participate in such an event.
Reaction wasn’t uniform, however, as nearly five hundred pro-Kremlin supporters on Wednesday got together at St. Petersburg's main Palace Square to celebrate Russia’s recognition of rebel-controlled regions in Donbas, carrying flags of Russia and of the two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine.
"Donetsk Luhansk People's republics we are together,” read one sign; "We don't leave ours, Russia is Peace!" read another.
The Kremlin has banned all protests or large political gatherings and has warned that heavy penalties will follow those who do participate in such an event.
"LAST QUESTION! LAST QUESTION! LAST QUESTION!"
Oh my GOD. In my entire life i have never seen such a frail idiot be so handled by his wet nurses.
I caught all but a first short portion of the president's speech.
He "laid it on" Putin firmly.
I was far more impressed by this than by his previous speech.
Joe Biden pledged that Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine would cost Russia “dearly, economically and strategically,” as the US and its allies announce new sanctions against the country.
“Putin will be a pariah on the international stage,” Biden said, warning that any countries affiliating themselves with Russia would be “stained by association”.
“When the history of this era is written, Putin’s choice to make a totally unjustifiable war on Ukraine will have left Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger,” Biden said.
Joe Biden emphasized the importance of the US and its allies standing up to Russian aggression, arguing that Vladimir Putin’s military maneuvers in Ukraine threaten freedom everywhere.
“This aggression cannot go unanswered. If it did, the consequences for America would be much worse,” Biden said. “America stands up to bullies. We stand up for freedom. This is who we are.”
Joe Biden said he was deploying more US troops to Germany in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but he emphasized that US troops would not be sent to Ukraine itself.
“Our forces are not, and will not be, engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine,” Biden said.
“Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our Nato allies and reassure those allies in the east.”
Biden reiterated that the US will fight to protect every inch of Nato territory and live up to its Article 5 commitments to defend its allies in the face of escalating Russian aggression.
Joe Biden said US oil and gas companies “should not exploit this moment,” amid concerns that the Russian invasion of Ukraine will cause sharply higher gas prices.
The president said he would release additional barrels of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve if necessary, as his administration closely monitors the energy industry.
“I will do everything in my power to limit the pain the American people are feeling at the gas pump,” Biden said. “But this aggression cannot go unanswered.”
Joe Biden said Vladimir Putin bears sole responsibility for the attack on Ukraine, and he announced his administration will impose more severe sanctions on Russia in response to the expanded invasion.
“Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences,” Biden said.
But Ch, I DO want you to keep coming up with unflattering pictures of our President.
That reveals your own small mindedness.
Said McConnell: “Ratchet the sanctions all the way up. Don’t hold any back Every single available tough sanction should be employed and should be employed now.”
Question for the blog -
Can we name a US sanction against Russia that HAS EVER BEEN EFFECTIVE?
Just one, that's all I'm looking for here.
I've looked everywhere and have yet to find one.
Sanctions are meaningless bullshit. And Putin knows it.
How do you sanction the worlds 4th largest gold reserve, and a fucking MASSIVE foreign currency reserve?
Oh, and all the while Putin is working the back channel with China, Iran, etc.
So yeah. SANCTIONS!!! A foreign policy popcorn fart.
Brilliant.
Those quotes were what I meant. He hit Putin hard.
He used the teleprompter for a couple minutes, then he spoke very well and no grubbing like a kid.
He "laid it on" Putin firmly.
I was far more impressed by this than by his previous speech.
The biggest threat is a cyberattack on the Russian internet and infrastructure services like train service and air control systems.
So you want to send a missile streaming toward Moscow, rrb?
I'm glad rrb and his boy are not in control.
President Joe Biden said Thursday that the U.S. will introduce a new wave of sanctions against Russia in a broad effort to isolate Moscow from the global economy.
The president's said that the totality of the penalties will target trillions in assets and include specific measures against Russian elites and banks including state-owned VTB Bank. The White House has also authorized additional troops to be stationed in Germany as NATO allies look to bolster defenses in Europe, Biden said.
"Today I'm authorizing additional strong sanctions, and new limitations on what can be exported to Russia," Biden said. "This is going to impose a severe cost on the Russian economy both immediately and over time."
"I just spoke with the G-7 leaders this morning," Biden said Thursday afternoon. "And we're in full and total agreement: We will limit Russia's ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds, and yen to be part of the global economy. We'll limit their ability to do that."
Prior to Biden remarks, leaders of the Group of Seven nations said they "are appalled by and condemn" Russia's military aggression in Ukraine and promised to impose "severe and coordinated economic and financial sanctions" against the Kremlin.
Follow our live updates here.
Like other world leaders, Biden said U.S. sanctions against Russia will also restrict high-tech trade with Moscow to limit its access to semiconductors needed to manufacture artificial intelligence, aerospace and defense hardware. The U.K. and Canada both announced crackdowns on exports to Russia earlier Thursday.
Biden said that possible Russia conduct cyberattacks against U.S. companies or infrastructure would be met in kind.
"Our forces are not and will not be engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine. Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our NATO allies," Biden said. We will "defend every inch of NATO territory with the full force of American power."
The economic penalties come as Russian troops advance through Ukraine after embarked on a large-scale offensive of its neighbor early Thursday local time.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would launch a "special military operation" in Ukraine designed to check its military capacity and added that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territory.
The U.S. and its NATO allies say there's little to no evidence of military aggression from Ukraine and that Russian claims to the contrary serve as Moscow's pretext for invasion.
McCONNELL BACKS TOUGH SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA
February 24, 2022 at 1:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 96 Comments
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that President Biden should increase sanctions against Russia “all the way up” after Moscow began a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, The Hill reports.
Said McConnell:
“Ratchet the sanctions all the way up.
Don’t hold any back.
Every single available tough sanction should be employed and should be employed now.”
Rootin' for Putin.
That's MORE than stupid.
This is why I support President Biden.
President Biden on Thursday declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin "will be a pariah on the international stage" for his unprovoked attack on Ukraine, and announced severe new sanctions that include sweeping export controls and a freeze on billions of dollars worth of Russian assets.
Why it matters: The new sanctions are coordinated with the G7 — countries that together make up 50% of the world's GDP — and are designed to "maximize a long-term impact on Russia and to minimize the impact on the United States and our allies."
"Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences," Biden said.Moments after Biden finished speaking, the Pentagon announced that an additional 7,000 U.S. troops would be deployed to Europe to shore up NATO's defenses.
Details: Sberbank — which is Russia's largest financial institution and holds nearly one-third of the overall Russian banking sector's assets — will be cut off from the U.S. financial system.
"Full-blocking" sanctions will be imposed on four additional Russian banks, freezing the U.S.-based assets of VTB, Bank Otkritie, Sovcombank OJSC, Novikombank and 34 subsidiaries.New debt restrictions will be imposed on 13 Russian state-owned enterprises and entities that together hold nearly $1.4 trillion in assets: Sberbank, AlfaBank, Credit Bank of Moscow, Gazprombank, Russian Agricultural Bank, Gazprom, Gazprom Neft, Transneft, Rostelecom, RusHydro, Alrosa, Sovcomflot, and Russian Railways.The U.S. will impose sweeping export controls on technologies critical to the Russian defense sector and broader economy, including semiconductors, telecommunication, encryption security, lasers, sensors, navigation, avionics and maritime technologies.Seven Russian elites and their family members who hold "some of the highest position of powers in the country" will also be sanctioned.
Zoom out: The European Union, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom plan similar actions, acting as a "force multiplier," according to the White House.
Between the lines: Biden did not announce that Russia would be disconnected from SWIFT, which is akin to the central nervous system for international financial transactions.
SWIFT sanctions were viewed as among the harshest under consideration, but some European allies feared that disconnecting Russian would cause collateral economic damage.Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted earlier Thursday: "Everyone who now doubts whether Russia should be banned from SWIFT has to understand that the blood of innocent Ukrainian men, women and children will be on their hands too."Pressed by a reporter, Biden said cutting Russia off from SWIFT is "always an option" but "right now that's not the position that the rest of Europe wishes to take."
The big picture: Biden said there is "a complete rupture right now in U.S. and Russia relations," and that sanctioning Putin himself remains on the table.
What he's saying: "The Russian military has begun a brutal assault on the people of Ukraine without provocation, without justification, without necessity. This is a pre-meditated attack. Vladimir Putin has been planning this for months, as we've been saying all along," Biden said.
Biden emphasized that U.S. forces "are not and will not be engaged in a conflict with Russia in Ukraine, and our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine but to reassure those allies in the east.""This aggression cannot go unanswered and if it did the consequences for America would be much worse. America stands up to bullies. We stand up to freedom."
Moments after Biden finished speaking, the Pentagon announced that an additional 7,000 U.S. troops would be deployed to Europe to shore up NATO's defenses.
Quite the opposite alky.
I never started a fight. Finished a few. The most memorable was when I was the new kid in a small Catholic School. A suburban school where I was the only farm kid. A wiseass bully started picking on me for exactly that reason. I stomped him AND his older brother into a fucking puddle in between classes one day. The taunting had gone on for several weeks and I had finally had enough.
No one fucked with the farm boy again and I suddenly had a whole new group of friends.
I hate bullies. That's why I hate leftists.
Did Joe stop Putin Oil Imports to the USA?
Has Biden increased our own gas and oil production? No, of course not. The green lobby won't Let him and his handlers haven't told him to.
Worse than Jimmy Carter.
The President should not have the authority to declare war, except in emergency events like the Cuban missile crisis.
The Presidents have constitutional authority to send troops for a defined period of time before they are required to get a war declaration of a congressional authorization for military force.
We went into Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and several other place with no declaration of war and just an authorization of military action.
What this bipartisan group of Congressional members are looking to do is prevent Biden from committing any troops without their approval. This is not how it is supposed to work. Biden should have power to send troops for so many days.
But there is bipartisan agreement that Biden cannot be trusted to do so.
I stood up to a bully in 5th grade. At the location where most of our after school fights took place. We rolled around. Fairly even. Then I got on top of him, got one good shot in and coincidently a police officer drove by, slowed down, put on the sirens and we broke it up.
The next day the bully did not come to school and everyone said I beat him up so bad he couldn't come to school. Nobody messed with me... well at least till Jr High!
My last real high school fight was in 10th grade in the locker room. Kid took my street clothes out of my locker and my lock and put them on another locker and wasn't going to tell me where they were. I was still in gym clothes.
He tried to leave and I knocked all his books out of his hand and wouldn't let him pick them up. Tried to tackle me. Dumb move as I was a wrestler. Had him face down on the ground me on top. I took the time to take of his glasses before providing him with a black eye right before the Gym teacher broke us up.
Gym teacher pulled me off and took me to his office and made the other kid wait outside. I explained what happened, he made the kid show me where my clothes were, confirmed I could get them. That kid got a black eye and detention. I got my clothes back and a short lecture on how I could have handled it better.
the AP reports.
“Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were detained, at least 957 of them in Moscow.”
______
Putin has overestimated what the Russian people will tolerate. I hope this will continue and grow into a movement that demands his overthrow and the restoration of free speech and freedom of assembly in Russia (once guaranteed to them byh their constitution).
The Russian people should never have let him take that from them.
Demand it back! Demand he vacate his luxurious palace and pay back huge amounts of the billions he has stolen.
Even the democrat media is hammering the bumbling Biden for claiming that nobody expected sanctions to be a deterrent whem that's exactly what his administration was saying.
Biden is so inept and pathetic. Look for China to overrun Taiwan soon.
Can Russia Actually Control Ukraine?
February 24, 2022 at 4:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 108 Comments
Retired Gen. David Petraeus talked to The Atlantic about the lessons from the U.S. occupation of Iraq:
“That question has to be one of those that is most unsettling in the back of President Putin’s mind and in the minds of his senior leaders. I was privileged to serve as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the invasion of Iraq and the first year there. Frankly, the fight to Baghdad, while tougher than many likely assessed it to be from afar, was pretty straightforward. But once the regime collapsed, we had nowhere near enough forces to prevent the terrible looting early on, and later we did not have enough to deal with the insurgent and extremist elements when they increased the violence dramatically in 2006 until we received the additional forces during the 18-month surge, together with the accompanying change in strategy and development of increasing numbers of reasonably competent Iraqi forces.”
“Let’s not forget that most Iraqis did initially welcome our liberation of the country from the brutal, kleptocratic Saddam Hussein regime. BUT Russians cannot expect to be applauded as they invade Ukraine.”
GOOD! LET THEM FEEL THE HATRED ALL AROUND THEM.
The problem in places like Ukraine is that there are people who are going to want to resist and then there are those who have always been either a little or a lot pro-Russia and even pro-Putin.
Reality is that there are many people from these former Soviet Union countries who miss the days of being a massive superpower. They will align themselves with those coming in to take over.
