Well apparently the unprecedented Biden leadership and experience couldn't stop Putin from doing what he wanted to all along. Just wonder what concessions he will garner.
Meanwhile our amazing Vice President in all of her infinite international war experience Kamalasplained to the entire world in Munich (just today) that our sanctions would most definitely deter Putin from any hostile military action. This is what happens when you make an affirmative action decision on your Vice President.

President Joe Biden on Monday reacted swiftly to Russian President Vladimir Putin declaring he would recognize the independence of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, possibly using the move as a pretext for an invasion the U.S. has warned was likely coming at any hour.
The White House said Biden would soon issue an executive order "that will prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in" the two Ukrainian regions under the control of Russian-backed separatists, Donetsk and Luhansk.
The order "will also provide authority to impose sanctions on any person determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. She added that the U.S. "will also soon announce additional measures related to today’s blatant violation of Russia’s international commitments."
Sanctions before the war is a very important and good decision.
SJDS is getting worse every day over and over again.

VP Harris' staff turnover a 'total meltdown,' says political insider
WASHINGTON (TND) — Symone Sanders, senior advisor and chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, announced her departure last week amidst reports of other staffers expected to exit, and a month following the exit of communications director Ashley Ettienne. The White House argues the turnover is normal after a busy first year in office, but political insider Armstrong Williams says it's indicative of a “total meltdown.”
“She's at a very pivotal spot. She's a heartbeat away from the presidency, and yet no one comes to her defense, to try to defend her and try to figure out what it is they can do to make her vice-presidential," said Williams to The National Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat.
Gil Duran, a former staffer for Harris who quit after working for her for five months, told the San Francisco Examiner last week in an op-ed he was “not surprised” by the ongoing narrative of issues in Harris’ office.
“It’s sad to see her repeat the same old destructive patterns under the harsh gaze of the Washington press corps,” said Duran.
Williams said when it comes to the possibility of a presidential run for Harris, “the establishment, the Black elite, Biden’s inner circle” do not want her to run.
“Kamala Harris is not the candidate, they found someone else and that door is shut,” said Williams. “It’s as if she's on a freefall, and they say they want her to fall out of the way and have literally no chance of becoming president of the United States.”

“Now the ukrainians destroy lenin monuments and want decommunization. you want decommunization? We can show you what REAL DECOMMUNIZATION means in Ukraine.”
“The destructive fantasies ofLeninist nation-building were never removed from the judicial basis of Soviet and post-Soviet statehood.”
“Historically, the inhabitants of the south-western regions have called themselves ‘Russian’ and ‘Orthodox’. we think this is self-evident.”
“Modern Ukraine was completely and utterly created by the Bolsheviks. this process began immediately after the revolution of 1917. Lenin and his comrades did this in a manner which was very rough on russia proper, by cutting off a historical part of its territory.”
“Why did the communists make such generous presents to the minority nationalists? this makes no sense, it is insane. But there is an explanation: after the revolution, the main goal of the Bolsheviks was to stay in power by any means necessary.”
“The Leninist principles of nation-building weren’t just a mistake, they were ‘worse than a mistake’. This became extremely obvious in 1991.”

“The russian people accepted the new geopolitical reality and materially supported the new states with respect for ukraine’s sovereignty.”

At the end of the day, Roger...
Putin has played the US leadership (and to a lesser degree NATO) like a fiddle. He is exactly where he wants to be at all points in time and we are flailing around with an unqualified moron addressing the world in Munich telling everyone that we can stop Putin with sanctions.
That unqualified moron is there because the head unqualified moron is busy getting over his latest ice cream freeze.

Russian troops entering disputed territories within Ukraine will not amount to an invasion in the eyes of the White House, according to a senior administration official. Anonymous sources
President Vladimir Putin recognized two occupied regions, the Luhansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic, as independent in Ukraine earlier on Monday, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict. Following the decision, the Russian leader ordered a “peacekeeping operation” in those regions.
Biden faces questions about access and transparency ahead of press conference
The White House, as a result of Russia’s move to recognize the occupied regions' independence, said President Joe Biden will unveil sanctions, though not the ones that had been threatened previously for a full-blown invasion.
Putin threatens ‘bloodbath’ if Ukraine resists loss of territory to Russia
affirmative action decision on your Vice President.
SJDS
So wait for it...
Putin just took two significant areas of Ukraine just like he previously annexed Crimea. He is slowly but surely expanding his rule in the area.
Look for Biden and NATO to basically back down, allow Putin to successfully make his play with minimal consequences and then attempt some political spin back in the United States that only the hardcore Biden devotees will accept as legitimate. Putin will have broken serious treaties, but we don't have the heart to really do anything about it.
Meanwhile, Putin consolidates his newfound success with expanding his influence and looks for the next opportunity. I suspect he will move fast to make sure he can do as much damage in the region as he can before the lackee Biden is replaced.
You actually think that Vice President Harris" his affirmative action
Vice President is in charge, before the lackee Biden is replaced.
You are addicted to conspiracy theories.
Putin is fully aware that he faces a divided U.S., and that influential voices on the right have been channeling much of his own propaganda.
By now the cast of Putin’s useful idiots is familiar, ranging from Tucker Carlson and Josh Hawley to Candace Owens, MTG, and Maria Bartiromo and CHT
Unfortunately a United nation doesn't exist anymore because of Trump and etc.
But I believe that he will keep NATO United and make Putin's life miserable because the oligarchs will lose billions and more.
Too bad you can't separate your political perspective and support our President no matter what politics.
Roger...
Kamala Harris (like the next USSC nominee) was picked 100% because she was a black woman. There was nothing else that qualified her over dozens of other potential Vice Presidents. Nothing but a vagina and black skin.
And no... I don't believe she is "in charge" of anything. According to all of her staff who has left her, she is an incompetent mean buffoon and cannot count to 11 without taking off her shoes.
I just pointed out that she was in Munich because Biden... well because Biden is Biden and didn't have the energy to go to Munich? I don't know. Maybe you can explain it.
Our current President has one thing Trump sorely lacked: The ability to listen to the advice of miltary and strategic advisers far wiser in these matters than he or we are, and with their help, make the more appropriate decisions.

Putin is increasingly 'paranoid' as he embraces a 'Russian version of QAnon': Former CIA official
Matthew Chapman
February 21, 2022
On Monday's edition of CNN's "OutFront," former CIA official John Sipher, who headed up Russian counterintelligence, said that Vladimir Putin is becoming unmoored from reality and paranoid of those around him in the leadup to his planned invasion of Ukraine.
"I know you saw, but anyone who didn't see Putin's address to the Russian nation tonight did not see the room," said anchor Erin Burnett, showing an image of Putin sitting at the far end of a large chamber with everyone else on the far side. "This was when he was speaking to his security council, before the actual address to the nation ... in light of that long table we saw the other day, which applied to certain presidents, not all, not one who took a Russian PCR test, these are all Russian PCRed people who are in the inner circle of Putin, so that can't be the excuse. What do you make of it?"
"Yeah, there's been a lot of reports that Putin is getting more and more paranoid," said Sipher. "He's obviously been cracking down domestically for the last six months to a year quite a bit, there's been stories about people visiting and have to wait in quarantine for weeks to go visit him. You know, you're a dictator for twenty years, you worry about not dying in your sleep as an old man."
Sipher then added that he's increasingly worried that Putin and you now believes his own propaganda.
"I assumed when I heard that speech that Putin knows that his lies are lies," added Sipher. "But listening to him today, it sounds like he really believes his own BS, it's like a Russian version of QAnon stuff, and that's scary because if he actually believes this stuff, it's hard to negotiate with crazy."
You believe in the American version of QAnon
Nothing but a vagina and black skin.
Our current President has one thing Trump sorely lacked: The ability to listen to the advice of miltary and strategic advisers far wiser in these matters than he or we are, and with their help, make the more appropriate decisions.
Not to rain on your parade, but recent articles came out from within the military that suggested Joe did not follow advice and dragged his feet on important decisions in the Afghanistan fiasco.
So if you want to make a point. Make sure that point is valid.
Either way... listening to advisors or not listening to advisors, everything he has done so far has turned to shit. I am literally not sure that I can come up with anything of real importance that Biden could claim success on?
you now believe your own propaganda.
You draw parallel comparisons that are propaganda.
He got bipartisan support the Reconstruction process that is currently creating ten of thousands of jobs, like under Eisenhower, Kennedy and LBJ...
That's a success
Biden has banded our nation and our NATO allies together in a more unified resistance to Putin's agressions than many people thought possible.
And he has clearly and repeatedly shown up Putin and his lackeys to be complete liars, as is clear from what the Russian ambassador said yesterday:
“We are not trying to take any territory of a foreign country. I would like to confirm that Donbas and Lugansk is part of Ukraine.”
— Russian ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov,
on CBS News just yesterday.
Okay Roger...

Economy? Nope
Even with a large stimulus plan we are still millions of jobs down from pre-Covid and they had to fudge the latest numbers to sidestep complete embarrassment there.
Foreign policy? Disaster
Crime? Through the roof
Unity? Not a chance?
Where are you seeing anything different than absolute failure?
Is it because he doesn't tweet mean things and is falsely accused of being a Russian spy (although he appears to be letting Putin have him up the you know what right now!).
Stop BABBLING. These are serious manners. Stop pulling for Russia and Putin.
Even Trump finally stopped doing that as much... (but only when he saw it was playing badly for him politically).

A word salad, or schizophasia, is a "confused or unintelligible mixture of seemingly random words and phrases", most often used to describe a symptom of a neurological or mental disorder. The term schizophasia is used in particular to describe the confused language that may be evident in schizophrenia.
Biden has not called NATO to "his" side. He has strongly supported them in siding with one another and with us against Russian aggression. That is what The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is all about. To deter aggression of the Soviet Union while it existed and Russia while it exists.
One reason Putin is acting as he does is because he fears that the breakdown of Russia into a post communist society swimming in corruption that richly rewards only the wealthy, while the general Russian people are experiecing an economony that is now one of the worst in the developed world, may cause the Russian people eventually to overthrow him, in spite of his dictatorial control of most of their press and all of their television.

That was actually readable , unlike anything you post that’s not a copy paste
High risk
Mr. Putin has in the past shown skill in brinkmanship. During invasions of Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, Mr. Braithwaite said, “he knew perfectly well when to stop, and got what he wanted both times.”
This time, Mr. Putin has significantly raised the stakes and left himself with no easy off-ramp. He can send the troops home, claiming he has gained the attention of Western leaders, as well as an American promise to talk about European security. Yet given that he is demanding a new security treaty he won’t get, a tame de-escalation risks a loss of face.
If he invades Ukraine, the risks are high. Western military analysts believe Russia’s military would prevail. But seeking a long-term subjugation of a hostile populace could lead to a quagmire.
Even sending in troops to slice off another chunk of Ukraine, for example building a land-bridge through Ukraine into Russian-occupied Crimea, would likely trigger heavy Western sanctions. That could swell opposition to Mr. Putin’s expected 2024 re-election.
All this has raised questions about what advice Mr. Putin is getting and from where. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he has appeared increasingly isolated in the Kremlin. Mr. Putin may have decided it is time to shake things up, but military campaigns rarely turn out as planned.
Mr. Braithwaite said there may be a parallel with another leader who spent a long time in office, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
“Putin is in a position—not to compare like with like—that Mrs. Thatcher was in 1989, 1990, when she was losing her political instincts,” he said. “The best guess is that he’s lost the instincts he had of knowing where to stop.”

Russia was "humiliated" when a number of nations decided they no longer wanted to continue being part of the Russian-imposed empire known as the United Soviet Socialist Republics.

There was a joke the Poles used to tell:
"Who has the longest cow in the world?"
"The Russians. It eats grass in Poland and gives milk in Moscow."
Russia's military officials have 'serious doubts'
We have more from this briefing to journalists from Western officials from our diplomatic editor Dominic Waghorn.
He says: "Western officials say Russia has deployed tactically on all fronts with Ukraine. Meaning moved out of their holding areas and moved from posture to poised for invasion.
"Western officials say they believe senior Russian security and military officials have serious doubts about the wisdom of attacking Ukraine.
"This is the first time we have heard Western officials say that. They seem confident in their information."
On Monday, Mr. Putin moved to formalize that separation by recognizing those territories, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as independent. Soon afterward, he ordered troops into the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in Eastern Ukraine.
But Mr. Putin’s efforts to wrest Ukraine back into Russia’s orbit have, in many ways, had the opposite effect. In a country that was once ambivalent about NATO at best, or openly hostile at worst, polls show that a solid majority now favor membership in the American-led military alliance.
In Kyiv, where Ukrainians had been nervously awaiting Mr. Putin’s decision, the reaction to his speech was one of disgust and foreboding.
Kristina Berdynskykh, a prominent political journalist, gathered with colleagues at a bar called Amigos and sat around a phone watching Mr. Putin’s speech, by turns crying and cursing.
“It is hatred for all of Ukraine and revenge for the country’s movement toward the E.U. and NATO and democracy — albeit chaotic, with huge problems, slow reforms and corruption — but where people elect and change power in elections or revolutions,” Ms. Berdynskykh said. “The worst dream for an old lunatic is both scenarios: fair elections and revolutions.”

Well Reverend
I asked first. What has Biden rallied NATO into doing, since you believe he is some sort of hero riding in on a white steed here?
Personally I couldn't give two rips what anyone says good or bad about Biden. But nobody other than the far left is even remotely suggesting he is winning right niw against Putin.
Even the far left is not exactly doing much but defending him.
The Ukrainians can see clearly that
“the worst dream for an old lunatic

is both scenarios:
fair elections
and
revolutions.”
It's not Putin against Biden, Ch.
GET THAT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL!
IT'S Putin against NATO and the opinion of much of the world.

You are saying that under Biden that the world no longer comes to the US for leadership?
That, in and of itself, tells us everything we need to know about this Presidency.
With around 60% of Americans fully vaccinated during the most recent wave, daily deaths from omicron are still relatively high, which begs the question: Who is dying of COVID-19 when there is such strong vaccination coverage?
Infectious disease doctors say it is still mainly unvaccinated people, most of whom are in their 30s and 40s with no underlying health issues, who are dying.
In the days leading up to the breakup of the Soviet Union, when communist corruption was running riot in Moscow,Leonid Breznev was visited by his mother in his palatial Moscow apartment.
He showed her all the luxurious rooms of all kinds with their glorious artwork and decorations, but she said nothing.
Then he took her down into the basement to see his huge fleet of expensive foreign autos, but she said nothing.
Then he took her to his summer mansion on the Black Sea and showed her the indoor swimming pool, the bowling alley, the stables and the horses and the skeet shooting range, but she said nothing.
Finally he said,
"Mamochka, Mamochka, I show you all these wonderful things, and yet you say nothing!"
"Da, da, [yes, yes] Lenny,"
she replied. "It's all very nice, but -- but what's going to happen when the Reds come back?"
Donald Trump’s delusions about the 2020 election are the gift that keeps on giving—to Democrats. “We don’t wear tinfoil hats,” says Wisconsin state Rep. Timothy Ramthun. Yet he is running for Governor while urging lawmakers to somehow “reclaim” the “fraudulent electoral ballots” that Wisconsin gave to President Biden.
Where to begin? There is no legal route for a state to undo the Electoral College votes cast in December 2020 and counted on Jan. 6, 2021. Zero, zip, zilch. Even if Mr. Trump had won Wisconsin’s 10 electors, he still would have lost the White House. Wisconsin Republicans have legitimate gripes about how voting rules were bent during the pandemic, including the use of ballot dropboxes and the private funds that flowed to local election offices.
But the GOP’s strategy should be to pass legislation that clearly bans such practices, which requires beating Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in November. Mr. Ramthun’s crusade is an in-kind donation to Mr. Evers’s re-election. A pep rally to launch Mr. Ramthun’s campaign this month brought out hundreds of supporters, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports, and it was kicked off with remarks by pillow impresario Mike Lindell, who has been sued for defamation by a voting-machine company for his claims about the 2020 election.
Mr. Ramthun is circulating a 72-page presentation full of specious claims. It says Wisconsin has 5.9 million people, yet its voter database includes 7.1 million records. As state officials explain, more than half of the voter records are inactive: “Wisconsin law requires that there be an active and an inactive voter list in part because a voter record is a historical record that cannot be deleted.”
Mr. Ramthun’s presentation claims the 2020 results were “a statistical impossibility.” As evidence it cites a document full of stuff like this: “Since 1892, no incumbent has gained votes and lost re-election.” But turnout was huge in 2020, while Mr. Trump also repelled many suburbanites. A hand audit of Wisconsin ballots by a conservative group found major ticket splitting in Mr. Biden’s favor. In some wards, 10.5% of Biden voters went for the GOP down ballot.
A President can be removed from office if he is impeached or incapacitated, but there is no undoing the Electoral College vote. Anyone who thinks that states can “reclaim” electors, so as to oust Mr. Biden in some kind of glorious revolution and effect a Trump restoration, has lost view of reality.
The 2022 elections should be the GOP’s oyster. A Democrat is in the White House, inflation is at 40-year highs, and labor-dominated cities have clung to Covid-19 rules long after the public moved on. Mainstream Republicans like former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, who is also challenging Mr. Evers, should take a lesson from what Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin pulled off last year. Instead they’ll be getting hostile questions about Mr. Ramthun’s pet theories.
Mr. Trump’s false claims about 2020 already helped Republicans lose Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats last year, and that was one expensive blunder. Now it could split Wisconsin conservatives, aid Mr. Evers’s re-election and perhaps defeat Sen. Ron Johnson. If that’s what ends up happening, Mr. Trump won’t regret it for a second, because he never does. Wisconsin Republicans will regret it for years.

Biden first received an in-depth briefing on options to take down al-Qurayshi more than a month ago, and he was briefed again in the Oval Office this week, the first official said. (sigh) No, Ch. I'm saying, as a lot of the leaders of the world are saying, how glad we are that the world can now turn its back on Trump's divisive style of non-leadership and, with strong and decisive American encouragement, swing back to the style of leadership we enjoyed pre-Trump -- a leadership in which "America First" meant being first in an international, powerful family of committed democratic nations with similar goals.
________
By the way, how does the military budget of Russia compare with the military budget of the Unied States?
Is it larger? Is it smaller?
How much larger? How much smaller?.

I wonder why the CDC website doesn’t bear that out
A prediction if he wins
Substantively, he will double down on his instincts, leaning into ideas he had before he became president. He could pull the plug on NATO entirely by refusing to defend Germany, France, and other selected countries under the mutual-defense clause. He could make this decision unilaterally, without authorization from Congress, as it simply entails altering a presidential interpretation of the purposefully vague NATO founding treaty.
If he wins again, friend and foe alike will accept that the post–World War II period of American leadership has come to a definitive end. The effect will vary from country to country. Some allies may cut deals with China and Russia. A small number could seek an independent nuclear deterrent. All will prepare for a world with less cooperation.
The coronavirus makes matters much worse. Many now widely accept that ordinary life will not return until a reliable vaccine is developed and widely distributed. The global economy is still teetering on the brink, rocked by the virus and the rivalry between the United States and China. Cooperation, particularly between the U.S. and Europe, has ground to a halt. The Trump administration’s priority is to signal its “America First” bona fides to its base rather than to build an international coalition to tackle shared problems. In a second Trump term, foreign countries can expect no coordination on the global economic recovery, the development of a vaccine, the repair of international institutions, or aid for those that were destabilized by the crisis. Openness—in terms of travel and trade—will not return to what passed for normal before the coronavirus. Every nation will have to fend for itself. The European Union and a handful of other democracies may try to keep the multilateral order alive, but it will become a relic, largely irrelevant to world events.
Autocrats—Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Mohammed bin Salman, Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, and others—have been both deeply insecure and emboldened during Trump’s first term. They see him as a kindred spirit and are confident in their ability to influence and persuade him. Trump acknowledged as much to Bob Woodward: “It’s funny, the relationships I have—the tougher and meaner they are, the better I get along with them … The easy ones are the ones I maybe don’t like as much or don’t get along with so much.” Those cozy relationships will continue and accelerate in a second term. Trump is easy to read, and with a mixture of flattery and inducements, the leaders will enlist Trump in their own causes, whether the elimination of dissent at home or turning a blind eye to regional aggression.
Looking back on U.S. diplomatic history, one of the great counterfactuals is what would have happened if Franklin D. Roosevelt had not replaced his vice president Henry Wallace with Harry Truman in 1944. Wallace was sympathetic to the Soviet Union and became an ardent opponent of the Cold War. If he had become president when FDR died, in April 1945, the next half century could have gone very differently—likely no NATO, no Marshall Plan, no alliance with Japan, no overseas troop presence, and no European Union.
The U.S. is now teetering on another historically important moment. With Trump, we would not only be deprived of our Truman. We would be saddled with our Wallace—a leader whose instincts and actions are diametrically opposed to what the moment requires. With few remaining constraints and a vulnerable world, a reelected Trump could set the trajectory of world affairs for decades to come.

If the US does become involved in Russia, the result might be nuclear annihilation. Eric Margolis says, “Russia has thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at the US and its allies. No one in their right mind should contemplate a nuclear confrontation. Russia has repeatedly made clear that if backed into a corner, it may well use tactical nuclear weapons.”
The saddest part of this whole manufactured crisis is that it should make absolutely no difference to us whether Russia controls Ukraine. How is that a threat to the United States? Whatever Biden and his neocon advisers say, America should stay out of conflicts that are none of our business. As usual, Murray Rothbard put it best. “In the context of the 1980 Afghan war, he quoted Canon Sydney Smith—a great classical liberal in early 19th century England who wrote to his warmongering Prime Minister, thus”:
For God’s sake, do not drag me into another war!
I am worn down, and worn out, with crusading and defending Europe, and protecting mankind; I must think a little of myself.

President Biden is imposing sanctions on two Kremlin-backed separatist regions in Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would recognize them as independent, the White House said on Monday.
The big picture: The U.S. and EU denounced Putin's move, calling it a violation of international law. The State Department was evacuating American personnel from Ukraine Monday, with many officials concerned that Putin's actions could be a pretext for a larger Russian invasion.
The UN Security Council held a rare nighttime emergency meeting on Monday following a request from the U.S., Ukraine and several other countries.
Meanwhile, Biden spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss a coordinated response on next steps, according to a readout from the White House.
He also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, vowing to "respond swiftly and decisively, in lock-step with its Allies and partners, to further Russian aggression against Ukraine," the statement added. What they're saying:
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement the executive order Biden signed Monday "will prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine. We will also soon announce additional measures related to today’s blatant violation of Russia’s international commitments."
"[T]hese measures are separate from and would be in addition to the swift and severe economic measures we have been preparing in coordination with Allies and partners should Russia further invade Ukraine," she added."Tomorrow we will be announcing new sanctions on Russia in response to their breach of international law and attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, at the security council meeting denounced as "nonsense" Putin's description of Russian military activity in the breakaway provinces as "peacekeeping operations," accusing Russia of "creating a pretext for war."
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement Putin's action "represents a complete rejection of Russia's commitments under the Minsk agreements, directly contradicts Russia’s claimed commitment to diplomacy, and is a clear attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Zelensky said in a televised address early Tuesday "we will not give away anything to anyone," per CNN.
UN Secretary General António Guterres said in a statement Russia's decision violated Ukraine's "territorial integrity and sovereignty" and was "inconsistent" with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Macron tweeted that he had called for EU sanctions as well as Monday's security council meeting.
The United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss tweeted, "Tomorrow we will be announcing new sanctions on Russia in response to their breach of international law and attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at a press conference that Russia's move "is plainly in breach of international law. It's a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine. It is a repudiation of the Minsk process."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement that Russia's activity "further undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, erodes efforts towards a resolution of the conflict, and violates the Minsk Agreements."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel issued a statement reiterating their "unwavering support" for Ukraine.
"This step is a blatant violation of international law as well as of the Minsk agreements," they added. "The Union will react with sanctions against those involved in this illegal act."
Turkey's Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement denouncing Russia for its "unacceptable" violation of Ukraine's "political unity and integrity."
FACT SHEET: Executive Order to Impose Costs for President Putin’s Action to Recognize So-Called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics
FEBRUARY 21, 2022STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
Today, President Biden signed an Executive Order (E.O.) to respond to President Putin’s action to purportedly recognize the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) as “independent” states. President Putin’s action contradicts Russia’s commitments under the Minsk agreements, refutes Russia’s claimed commitment to diplomacy, and undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This E.O. is distinct from the swift and severe economic measures we are prepared to issue with Allies and partners in response to a further Russian invasion of Ukraine. We are continuing to closely consult with Ukraine and with Allies and partners on next steps and urge Russia to immediately deescalate.
Today’s E.O. prohibits:
New investment in the so-called DNR or LNR regions of Ukraine by a United States person, wherever located; The importation into the United States, directly or indirectly, of any goods, services, or technology from the so-called DNR or LNR regions of Ukraine; The exportation, reexportation, sale, or supply, directly or indirectly, from the United States, or by a United States person, wherever located, of any goods, services, or technology to the so-called DNR or LNR regions of Ukraine; And any approval, financing, facilitation, or guarantee by a United States person, wherever located, of a transaction by a foreign person where the transaction by that foreign person would be covered by these prohibitions if performed by a United States person or within the United States.
The E.O. also provides authority to impose sanctions on persons determined:
To operate or have operated since the date of the order in the so-called DNR or LNR regions of Ukraine; To be or have been since the date of the order a leader, official, senior executive officer, or member of the board of directors of an entity operating in the so-called DNR or LNR regions of Ukraine; To be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order;Or to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.
The Department of the Treasury is issuing six General Licenses to ensure that humanitarian and other related activity can continue in these regions:
The purpose of this E.O. is to deny Russia the chance to profit from its blatant violations of international law. These actions are not directed at the people of Ukraine or the Ukrainian government.Treasury’s General Licenses are designed to support the innocent people who live in the so-called DNR and LNR regions who did not have a choice in Russia’s destabilizing and illegitimate actions today. The licenses allow a short-term wind down of activities, as well as for the export to the regions of food, medicine and medical devices, and ensure personal remittances can continue to flow. The licenses also allow telecommunications and internet services to remain operational, and mail services to continue. The licenses allow international organizations to be able to provide aid to the people in these two regions.
The United States will not hesitate to use its authorities to target those supporting efforts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This authority provides the United States with the flexibility to impose similar restrictions on any other regions of Ukraine as appropriate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send more troops into Ukraine would not trigger the sanctions prepared by the United States and European allies, the White House said Monday.
A White House official explained President Joe Biden’s position during a conference call with reporters Monday.
Biden officials reacted anonymously to Putin’s decision to send Russian troops into Ukraine’s Donestsk and Luhansk regions for “peacekeeping” after the two territories declared independence from Ukraine.
“Russian troops moving into Donbas would not itself be a new step,” the official noted during the call. “Russia has had forces in the Donbas region for the past eight years.”
Putin’s political play puts Biden and his administration in a difficult spot, as they have repeatedly said that large numbers of troops crossing the Ukrainian border would be considered an invasion.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced Tuesday that the certification process for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be halted after the Kremlin ordered troops into eastern Ukraine, saying that "the situation has fundamentally changed."
Why it matters: It's a stunning turn of events for the $10 billion, Russia-to-Germany natural gas pipeline, which Scholz had long resisted naming as a potential sanctions target if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Between the lines: Ukraine views the Putin-backed project as an existential threat to its security, as it would deprive the country of billions of dollars in gas-transit fees and allow Russia to deliver gas directly to the heart of Europe.
The U.S. has long held the position that Nord Stream 2 is a malign Kremlin geopolitical influence project that would increase Europe's reliance on Russian gas, but President Biden allowed construction to proceed last year in order to repair relations with Germany.Germany's economy is highly reliant on Russian gas, which had raised questions about Berlin's willingness to stand up to Moscow with the harsh sanctions that the U.S. and other European allies had promised.

U.N. Security Council members had one clear message for Russian President Vladimir Putin: We know what you’re up to, and you need to quit it now — or else.
Putin escalated the crisis he started by sending so-called peacekeepers into two Russian-backed breakaway territories inside Ukraine that he formally recognized as “independent” earlier on Monday. The global community has quickly mobilized to respond, announcing some sanctions and teasing further action before organizing an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council.
Every China.
“China’s more explicit warnings in recent days against a Russian invasion of Ukraine show how Beijing is walking a tightrope, trying to build up a partnership with the Kremlin while preventing its relationship with Washington from becoming outright hostile,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“A shared interest in confronting the U.S. has driven the China-Russia relationship to its closest point since the early years of the Cold War seven decades ago.”
“But since Chinese President Xi Jinping this month gave his Russian counterpart his strongest support to date in Moscow’s standoff with the West, Beijing has been calling for a resolution of the crisis through diplomatic channels, aligning its position closer to that taken by the U.S. and its allies.”

WSJ reports
Germany halted the Russian-German Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline after President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into breakaway Ukraine regions, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday.
The pipeline was set to double direct Russian gas exports to the country and has been awaiting formal approval since last October. The German agency in charge of certification had recently suspended the process and said it wouldn’t resume before the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is considering severing diplomatic relations with Russia in response to Mr. Putin’s decision, as reports grew of Russian troops moving into the area.
“Ukraine must react to this, defending its sovereignty and statehood.” Mr. Zelensky said at a Tuesday press conference with the Estonian president, at which he called on the West to immediately punish Russia with sanctions. He said he would decide on his foreign ministry’s proposal to cut ties with Moscow later Tuesday.

CHUCK TODD:
Let me ask this question: In your assessment, why did Putin – why is he escalating with Ukraine now? Why didn't he do this under the previous administration, who wasn't as supportive of NATO? If you just look at it observationally, if he really wanted Ukraine and he didn't want the United States getting in the way, he perhaps had a – more of a friendlier administration in the previous one. Why do you think he didn't act then?
SEC. ANTONY BLINKEN:
I hope you get a chance to ask him. But look, here's what I can say. I think, and I really don't want to put myself in his mind because that's very hard to do, but I think it's reasonable to think that, as President Putin sees it, Ukraine was slipping further and further away from his grasp over time – increasingly Western-oriented, desirous of a future with Europe. And as that was continuing year after year – by the way, largely again, as a result of his actions in alienating Ukrainians by seizing Crimea and invading via separatists the Donbass – as that was happening, it no doubt got to a point where he thought if he didn't do something to change the dynamic, it was just going to happen.

Putin struck NOW because his adversary in DC is mentally incapacitated.
The liberal media won’t admit it, but the reason Russian forces are entering Ukraine can be explained in two words—Joe Biden. In fact, thanks to Biden, the U.S. is paying for the Russian invasion. His energy policy of reducing American production, stopping the almost completed keystone pipelines, no drilling on federal lands, new regulation regarding oil and gas drilling, and much more spiked the price of energy. For example, in 2020 the price of natural gas was $4.36/1,000 cubic feet, 2021 prices averaged $9/1,000 cubic feet.
Before Biden became President, the U.S. was energy independent and an exporter of energy. The lower American production and removing Trump’s restrictions on the Nordstream natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. His policies made other countries more reliant on Russian gas. Giving Putin leverage on other countries such as Germany and doubling the price. All that extra money went straight into Russia’s pockets. Those new profits helped Russia raise the funds to continue Putin’s dream of the greater Russia of the USSR.
On top of the higher prices and the increased dependence on Russian energy, the mishandling of the Afghan withdrawal and removing some of the Iran sanctions showed Biden to be a weak President. Putin is no idiot. All of Biden’s flawed policies and feeble foreign policy made the Russian president understand that if he was ever going to get Ukraine back in Russia’s clutches, this was it.

Late Monday, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on the Ukraine crisis, following a request by Kyiv citing Russia’s decision to recognize the separatist regions.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, formally requested the meeting in a letter that cited Russia’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent nations, as well as Moscow’s “ongoing aggravation of the security situation around Ukraine” and threat to “international peace and security.” The Washington Post obtained a copy of the letter.
Russia, which appeared largely isolated at the world body, also came under criticism from U.N. Secretary General António Guterres, who said the Kremlin’s actions were “inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”
Zelensky told his countrymen in a video address posted on social media that “we will give up nothing to no one” and that Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders “will stay that way, despite any statements or actions taken by the Russian Federation.”
“It’s very important to see now who is our real friend and partner, and who continues to frighten the Russian Federation with words,” he said.
The State Department, which evacuated the U.S. Embassy from Kyiv to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, said Monday that out of precaution, embassy workers would be staying over the border in Poland and commuting to Lviv to carry out their duties.
The situation presents a precarious moment for the White House. For weeks, Biden and allied leaders have been warning Russia that an invasion would result in severe sanctions on the Russian financial sector and export controls that would hobble the nation’s economy.
Now, they have to decide whether Putin’s decision to move Russian forces into the breakaway territories constitutes the sort of invasion that would trigger the full-fledged package of measures.
We shall see soon.

Is our military budge twice as large. Two times? Three times? Four times? FIVE? SIX? 7? 8? 9? 10? EVEN MORE?
Russia has the smaller military.
However, Russia has local superiority. And local superiority makes all the difference.
And the correct answer is:
EVEN MORE.
If he had been elected President, he would have withdrawn from NATO with an executive order.
And Vladimir Putin would be rebuilding the Russian empire.
Our military budget is FOURTEEN TIMES larger than that of Russia.
No wonder Putin is frightened.
He was frightened of what Trump might do. Biden doesn't scare him one bit.
There's a reason why Putin is doing this now and not during the Trump presidency.
In 2019, President Trump suggested a move tantamount to destroying NATO: the withdrawal of the United States.
Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Current and former officials who support the alliance said they feared Mr. Trump could return to his threat as allied military spending continued to lag behind the goals the president had set.
In the days around a tumultuous NATO summit meeting last summer, they said, Mr. Trump told his top national security officials that he did not see the point of the military alliance, which he presented as a drain on the United States.
Putin would have already invaded Ukraine and possibly even Poland.

The United States spends more on national defense than China, India, Russia, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Australia — combined. While the chart above illustrates last year’s defense spending in dollar terms, the United States has also historically devoted a larger share of its economy to defense than many of its key allies.
Defense spending accounts for more than 10 percent of all federal spending and nearly half of discretionary spending. Total discretionary spending — for both defense and nondefense purposes — is typically only about one-third of the annual federal budget.

“Some analysts today imagine a Ukrainian insurgency sprouting up against Russian domination.
Perhaps.
But the Ukrainian people cannot be expected to fight a full-spectrum war with whatever they have in their homes.
To have any hope against Russian occupation forces, an insurgency will need to be supplied and supported from neighboring countries.
Will Poland play that role, with Russian forces directly across the border?
Will the Baltics?
Or Hungary?
And if they do, will the Russians not feel justified in attacking the insurgents’ supply routes, even if they happen to lie in the territory of neighboring NATO members?
It is wishful thinking to imagine that this conflict stops with Ukraine.
“The map of Europe has experienced many changes over the centuries.
Its current shape reflects the expansion of U.S. power and the collapse of Russian power from the 1980s until now;
the next one will likely reflect the revival of Russian military power and the retraction of U.S. influence.
If combined with Chinese gains in East Asia and the Western Pacific, it will herald the end of the present order and the beginning of an era of global disorder and conflict as every region in the world shakily adjusts to a new configuration of power.”
Behind China’s Warning Against a Russian Invasion...
...Beijing has been calling for a resolution of the crisis through diplomatic channels, aligning its position closer to that taken by the U.S. and its allies.”

White House Won’t Call Putin Moves an ‘Invasion’

Politico:
“It’s an important distinction, as an invasion would trigger sanctions on Russia and imperil diplomatic meetings that were set on the condition that Russia not invade Ukraine.
“The Biden administration’s posture was met with immediate pushback from Republicans on Capitol Hill, who argued that the full slate of sanctions should be triggered once Russian troops cross into Ukraine. They noted that this was the White House’s own definition of an ‘invasion’ of the country.”
Get smart. Biden is giving Pooty a chance to realize he's overstepped and is losing support at home and return to negotiations.
Full sanctions can always be imposed if he doesn't.

Biden Has Started Interviewing Supreme Court Candidates

“Biden sat down with at least one candidate late last week. It’s unclear how many face-to-face sessions Biden has done or if he met with anyone else over the weekend as he dealt with the Ukraine crisis, but the ‘interview phase is underway,’ the person familiar said, and things are on track for an announcement within the next week.”
Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) told the Washington Post the confirmation process will be speedy: “The longer you wait, the more likely things get complicated with outside events. What if in the middle of this, God forbid, war breaks out in some part of the world? I mean, things can happen.”

Biden’s Ratings Hover Near 40%
February 22, 2022 at 9:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments
A new Gallup poll finds 41% of U.S. adults approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president, similar to his 40% rating for handling foreign affairs, while approval of his handling the economy and the situation with Russia are slightly lower.
MY PREDICTION: THEY WILL KEEP GOING UP.
OBAMA'S RATINGS WERE AT TIMES LOW, YET HE GOT REELECTED.
TRUMP'S WERE ALWAYS IN THE BASEMENT, AND HE DID NOT GET REELECTED.
WASHINGTON — In a series of top-secret meetings in October, President Joe Biden’s national security team presented grim intelligence that would soon trigger a fierce effort to prevent what could become the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, was preparing to invade Ukraine, top intelligence and military officials told Biden. Gathering each morning in the Oval Office for the global threat assessment known as the President’s Daily Brief, they described satellite images of Russian forces methodically advancing toward Ukraine’s border.
Not only did the United States have images of troops moving into position, it also had the Russian military’s plans for a campaign against Ukraine — elements of which had already begun. At one of the morning meetings, Biden dispatched William J. Burns, the CIA director, to Moscow with a message for Putin:
We know what you’re planning to do.
Stopping him would be a challenge. Many of America’s closest allies were skeptical that Putin — a master of disinformation — would actually invade. The use of U.S. military force against Russia was off the table, so the allies would have to threaten Putin with economic pain so severe it would also have consequences in Europe and the United States. And it was far from certain that Republicans in Congress would back whatever the administration did.
But I have hope that some Republicans will be loyal to the United States of America instead of following......

Two can play the game of subversion. Not to mention the many coordinated external pressures that can be brought to bear.
We can say with button-popping confidence that Putin never -- never -- would be attempting to recapture Ukraine with Donald J. Trump occupying the Oval Office. A strong man -- an apex predator, which Putin is -- takes the measure of adversaries. For Putin, Biden is prey. Trump was -- and may well again be -- a steely adversary crossed at great peril.

Long but explains in great detail, our “elites” were warned on Russia’s response.
Her only triumph is that she didn’t burst into a fit of giggles at an inappropriate moment.
She will certainly not cause Putin to be deterred.
The situation on the Ukraine-Russia border is extremely critical. If war were to break out, matters could rapidly spiral out of control because Russia is a nuclear-armed state. At this juncture every syllable uttered matters. The least that is expected from someone in the position of Kamala Harris is to be prepared and use her words with unambiguous surgical precision. A clear message needed to be sent and confidence had to be projected.
While Putin plays Biden, isn’t it as true that our president is trying to play us, the American people? No, the dog isn’t being wagged here, not strictly. Biden’s handlers found a crisis not to waste. We’re witnessing full diversion mode as American news outlets happily obsess on Ukraine.
Never mind that the U.S.-Mexican border has been dissolved (not breached, but eliminated). Forget that energy prices continue to climb, further fueling inflation, which is the bastard child of profligate federal spending and an obscene volume of money-printing that’s simply indefensible. Democrat-run cities are trending toward eventual collapse as lawlessness pushes these metropolises toward some primitive state. Biden renews a state of emergency under the guise of the increasingly phonied-up COVID pandemic. Affluent white progressives ceaselessly pimp racial hatred, trying to divide Americans to feed their voracious appetites for power. Illicit drug deaths reached 100,000 last year. But let’s stop. The list is too dreary to continue.
A massive diversion is underway. Putin has nothing to do with it. The nation is a cauldron of troubles, anyone of which could erupt in crisis, or simultaneous crises that could result in systemic failure. In the 2020s, the nation is confronting the greatest threats to its welfare and being since the 1850s and 1860s. But no matter, Putin may invade Ukraine.
He was just another black man!
A federal jury in Georgia on Tuesday found the three men convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery guilty of hate crime and other charges.
After a day of deliberation, U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood said Tuesday morning that the jury — made up of eight white people, three Black people and one Hispanic person — had come to a conclusion and would read its verdict shortly.
The jury found father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan guilty of all the federal charges they individually faced, including hate crimes, attempted kidnapping and the use of a firearm to commit a crime. The conviction came one day before the second anniversary of Arbery's murder.
McMichaels and Bryan chased Arbery, 25, through their coastal Georgia neighborhood in trucks. The three men spotted Arbery running by their homes in February 2020, and cornered him and Travis McMichael fatally shot him with a shotgun.

Trump Calls Putin a ‘Genius’ and ‘Very Savvy’
February 22, 2022 at 3:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 198 Comments
Former President Donald Trump called Vladimir Putin a “genius” on Buck Sexton’s podcast for moving Russian troops into parts of Ukraine.
Said Trump:
“I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s the strongest peace force… We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy.”
He added: “But here’s a guy that says, you know, ‘I’m gonna declare a big portion of Ukraine independent,’ he used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy. And you know what the response was from Biden? There was no response. They didn’t have one for that. No, it’s very sad. Very sad.”
