Talks begin between Russia and Ukraine as the Belarus military looks to join Russia

Questions about whether Kyiv is surrounded are raging as well

Lots of moving parts when it comes to war. What exactly is being discussed between the leaders is not yet known. They could be negotiating a ceasefire, negotiating the separatists areas, or just biding time and playing games.

Putin seems to be placing more resources in and around Kharkiv which observers believe is a pretense to isolating the the eastern portion of Ukraine and adding Ukraine's second largest city into a larger section of land that would include the separatists area already pretty much Russian occupied. With Crimea and the two separatist areas, much of that area is now under Russian control already. Perhaps there is a deal to be made with Putin backing off Kyiv and Ukraine as a whole, and Zelenskyy giving up some of that eastern region as a "new" country that would obviously be under Putin's thumb.

Meanwhile, the press secretary in Kyiv told the world that their city was basically surrounded and that nobody was getting out or in. This was heavily disputed almost immediately and some were literally calling the press secretary out as a "liar".  Of course piecing together a variety of sources and what some are claiming satellite imaging is showing, there are Russian troops that advanced "around" Kyiv and may be setting up blockades on as many roadways as they could. I suspect that the press secretary probably told a damaging truth because he didn't know any better. Either way, Russians are expected to have that city encircled or surrounded in the coming days, especially if Belarus enters the fray.

The Belarus involvement would be hard on Ukraine. First, from a psychological standpoint, it would suck to have other former Soviet soldiers invading your territory. It's one thing to fight the Russians. It's another to have a neighbor take the other side. Second, Belarus is no more than 150 miles from Kyiv and at the very least provides more pressure from the north and north west. Belarus is said to only have about 50,000 in their armed forces, but they do have some very well trained combat units.

At this point, the undermatched Ukrainians are still standing. They may look like Rocky at the end of the first Rocky movie, but they appear to have the same sort of heart and drive to go the distance. Whether they can keep up the resistance as food, medicine, and supplies start to dwindle is anyone's guess. But who wants to bet against them at this point?

Switzerland to Freeze Russian Assets

“Switzerland, a favorite destination for Russian oligarchs and their money, announced on Monday that it would freeze Russian financial assets in the country,
setting aside a deeply rooted tradition of neutrality to join the European Union and a growing number of nations seeking to penalize Russia for the invasion of Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.

“Switzerland said it was departing from its usual policy of neutrality because of ‘the unprecedented military attack by Russia on a sovereign European state,’ but expressed a willingness to help mediate in the conflict.

"It also joined European neighbors in closing its airspace to Russian aircraft, except for humanitarian or diplomatic purposes.”

Vladimir Putin just achieved the impossible: genuine European unity.

The Russian president’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has united Europe and the transatlantic sphere like nothing since the fall of the Berlin Wall, as even his erstwhile allies on the Continent abandoned him over the weekend.

From Sofia to Stockholm, Europe’s internal divisions over how to react to Putin’s aggression have melted away in recent days as the historic dimensions of the invasion — the greatest challenge to the West’s security architecture in decades — sank in.

Even Switzerland has imposed sanctions against Russian banks

The attack on Ukraine was the first military action in The Third World War. Very much like Pearl Harbor attacks.

If the Russians succeed, it will have two nuclear weapond allies, China and North Korea.

Fortunately our allies around the world are using economic attacks and military supplies and technology weapons system to defend Ukraine and eastern Europe.

The President's State of the Union address is as important as FDR in 1942. And we will prevail without direct Militarily forces.

Interestingly, the call lasted an hour and a half.

Big Majority In U.S. Say Russian Invasion Not Justified

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll finds 74% of Americans say the Russian invasion of Ukraine is not justified and 76% express an unfavorable opinion of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Yet in a striking sign of how deep partisanship continues to run in the U.S., just 3% of 2020 Donald Trump voters are willing to say President Biden is ‘doing a better job leading his country’ than Putin. Nearly half (47%) of Trump voters say Putin is doing a better job than Biden, even as Russia’s economy threatens to collapse under the weight of crippling global sanctions. A slightly smaller share of Trump voters (45%) say ‘neither’ man is doing a better job than the other.”

You have to wonder how the Reverend could possibly link a poll like this and not include the most important part:

Yet in spite of this consensus, just a third of Americans (34 percent) say they approve of how Biden is handling “the situation with Russia and Ukraine.” Nearly half (48 percent) disapprove, and 17 percent are not sure.

It's almost as if he didn't actually bother to look at the Yahoo New story and instead just cut and pasted what some other person (eg Taegan Goddard) cut and pasted from the story.

I mean, cutting and pasting is lazy. But when you allow someone else to decide what to cut and paste "for you" that is exponentially worse.

Russia's war on Ukraine: Day five situation on the ground

Agence France-Presse

February 28, 2022

On the fifth day of fighting in Ukraine on Monday, defending forces claim that the Russian onslaught has slowed but still aims for Kyiv, while Russia reports progress in the south.

Here is a summary of the situation on the ground, based on statements from the warring sides, Western defense and intelligence sources and international organizations.

The military situation:

- Ukraine says Russian troops have "reduced" the speed of their offensive but continue to pursue their "main objective": taking the capital Kyiv.

- Naval battles rage around the Black Sea port of Odessa, Ukraine says, as well as near Ochakiv and Chornomorsk.

- Ukraine says Russia is still trying to organize a naval landing at Mariupol on the shores of the southern Sea of Azov.

- Russia claims air superiority in Ukraine.

- Ukraine says Russia launched six missile strikes involving up to 30 missiles on Sunday and four air strikes, mostly from Belarusian territory.

- Ukraine says Russia has fired 180 Iskander-type mobile ballistic missiles since the start of the offensive.

- Ukraine says it is holding Kharkiv, 500 kilometers (310 miles) east of Kyiv.

- The Ukrainian army says it has repelled "several" attacks on Kyiv.

- Ukraine says three Russian missiles targeted Kyiv. One was intercepted.

- Local media report overnight explosions in Kyiv and Kharkiv.

- Russia says it is besieging the cities of Kherson and Berdyansk close to Crimea.

- Ukraine confirms Berdyansk is occupied by Russian soldiers.

- Ukraine says 4,300 Russian soldiers have been killed.

- Ukraine's leader urges Russian troops to lay down their arms.

- A brewery in Lviv, western Ukraine, switches production from beer to Molotov cocktails.

The civilian/humanitarian situation:

- Ukraine reports 352 civilian deaths since the start of the invasion, including 14 children.

- The UN puts the civilian toll at 102, including seven children.

- Russia says civilians can leave Kyiv "freely".

- Russia says Ukraine is using civilians as human shields.

- More than 500,000 people have fled the conflict, the UN says.

Americans also tend to agree on how the administration should be responding, with 56 percent saying they favor last week’s “major sanctions” designed to “cut off Russia’s government from Western banks and financial markets” — despite an explicit description that the sanctions were “imposed” by Biden. Unsurprisingly, 72 percent of Democrats favor Biden’s sanctions; just 6 percent oppose them. But the same sanctions also win the support of most Republicans (53 percent), with very little outright opposition (11 percent).

How the U.S. Should Handle Putin’s Nuclear Threats

Tom Nichols:
“For now, the sensible, and confident, American answer should be to do nothing. This might seem counterintuitive: The Russians have gone to higher alert, and it would seem only prudent to answer this with a reciprocal raising of U.S. alert status.

“But that Cold War reaction would, I suspect, exactly what Putin wants.
He’s in a jam and he’s trying to look strong, and part of the way he can do that is to turn his hare-brained scheme in Ukraine into a gigantic Russian-American confrontation.
Putin would like nothing better than to take everyone’s mind off Ukraine and focus us all on a game of nuclear chicken.”

Why exactly?

This isn't a popularity contest or a means to show support and if that is how you view it... then why even ask the damned question??

Our goal in all of this was simple. Avoid war at all cost.

We failed. Plain and simple. There are any number of things we could have done earlier to have stopped this in it's tracks. We didn't do them.

What is Putin's goal? To expand his political power in the area. If he comes out if this with little more than control of the separatist areas of Ukraine now under full Russian control.

Then he actually gained something tangible.

Moreover, that appears right now like money in the bank. He still could end up with more than that. We have no idea at this point.

But Putin will not come away empty handed even if he is held off in Kyiv. He may not be getting everything he wanted, but he is getting more than we got.

Because we failed already. Every dead Ukranian is partially our failure. You can blame Putin, but it's not his failure. It was his success. It may not seem fair, but all "IS" fair in love and war.

So perhaps you can explain to me how it is that Biden (who was supposed to figure out how to prevent war) is achieving more than Putin (who has already staked claim to portions of Ukraine and still has the chance to garner much more than that?

How is Biden being successful to any degree here?

Explain it without just being a FUCKING CHEERLEADER which does nobody any good at all.

I think for people like Roger and the Reverend....

They lack a basic understanding of anything competitive. Liberals are much less likely to play sports, watch sports, or have anything to do with a fair competition where you put yourself out there against another person or another team and risk winning or losing.

Being an athlete and a competitor in things like wrestling, track and field makes you appreciate individual competition. Playing sports like football or basketball make you appreciate team sports.

What those of us who understand this personally know... and liberals like Roger and the Reverend will NEVER understand is that there is many times a favorite and many times an underdog. What they certainly appear to not understand is that rooting for the underdog does not require you to suggest that they are the better competitor or that they field the better team.

But you can root for them anyways.

They don't get it. Because they never competed.

They see it intertwined. You cannot root for your home team to beat Alabama in football (apparently according to liberal logic) without having to also suggest that your team is better. The simple acknowledgment that your team is a big underdog and that winning will require some breaks and such would be seen by them as some sort of chink in your support armor.

Acknowledging reality means you are not actually rooting for your team.

Again... comes from not understanding competition.

If they knew a month ago that Putin was going to invade, then why wasn't the hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid already there, so that it could actually be used to fend off an attack?

Why not move a small amount of troops into Ukraine for say "training purposes" to assist with the new equipment that we were generously offering. Never in a million years would Putin have attacked Ukraine with American soldiers in that country.

Europe is uniting as Europe completely separate from the United States. There is literally "nothing" Biden is doing that is responsible for any European unity at this point.

This is just a simple case of a tyrant (Putin) attacking a sovereign nation without provocation and nearly ever leader in the free world stepping up justifiably and demanding it stop.

Now while there is certainly great unity in the response, it is not exactly what Ukraine has been calling for and what Ukraine probably needs right now, but that sort of leadership (getting anyone to go above and beyond sanctions or finding anyone willing to get their hands dirty here) is still lacking.

We don't have a Bush Sr putting together a massive military coalition. We just have people agreeing to sanctions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was pleased that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett extended an offer to Russian President Vladimir Putin to mediate between the two Eastern European countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv’s envoy to Israel said Monday.

In a briefing with reporters, Ukrainian Ambassador Yevgen Korniychuk claimed that Putin was not thrilled by Bennett’s offer when the two leaders spoke by phone Sunday. However, Korniychuk said Ukraine believed there was still a chance that Russia could take up the Israeli initiative.

“At the moment [the Russians] think they can conquer us,” Korniychuk was quoted as saying by Hebrew media, “but of course they won’t succeed.”

Ukrainian and Russian officials wrapped up a critical round of talks Monday near the border with Belarus.

Officials from both countries said the sides could hold more negotiations amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s armed forces continue to hold off Russian troops, defending and retaining control of key cities, and slowing Russia’s advance on Kyiv.

Meanwhile, the central bank of Russia more than doubled its key interest rate on Monday, as the ruble plummeted after heavy sanctions were imposed on Moscow by the West.

The Russian people face 20% inflation rates..

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

By targeting Russia’s central bank with sanctions, experts said, American and European leaders have taken aim at what could be one of President Vladimir V. Putin’s greatest weaknesses: the country’s currency.

In Russian cities, anxious customers started lining up on Sunday in front of A.T.M.s, hoping to withdraw the money they had deposited in banks, fearful it would run out. The panic spread on Monday. To try to restore calm, the Bank of Russia posted a notice on its website: “The volume of bank notes ready for loading into A.T.M.s is more than sufficient. All customer funds on bank accounts are fully preserved and available for any transactions.”

Even before the sanctions were announced over the weekend, the ruble had weakened. On Monday it plunged further, with the value of a single ruble dropping to less than 1 cent at one point. As the value of any currency drops, more people will want to get rid of it by exchanging it for one that is not losing value — and that, in turn, causes its value to drop further.

In Russia today, as the purchasing power of the ruble drops sharply, consumers who hold it are finding that they can buy less with their money. In real terms, they become poorer. Such economic instability could stoke popular unhappiness and even unrest.

Spot on

Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman, shakes his head in wonderment: “When I was a little by, both Republicans and Democrats believed that democracy was good and the Soviet Union was bad. Now I’m an old fart and Republicans believe Russia is good and democracy is bad.” I feel you, Joe. Back when I was a little boy in 1962, and a Democratic president had to confront the Russians during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Republicans didn’t try to undercut their commander-in-chief.”

But times have changed. The official House Republican Twitter feed posted a photo of President Biden and messaged: “This is what weakness on the world stage looks like.” That tweet puzzled me. I was not under the impression that rallying the western alliance and slapping economic sanctions on the aggressor meets the dictionary definition of weakness.

It would nice to believe that the GOP’s MAGA wing will sink the party in the 2022 and 2024 elections. It would be nice to believe that most Americans will recoil at this perfidious – and potentially traitorous – behavior. But rest assured that Duh Base at this point will swallow whatever bilge it is offered.

And as for a broader swath of Americans, their concerns are frankly quite parochial: As long as a lot of Americans aren’t being killed faraway, a foreign crisis is at most a mere annoyance. And if that foreign crisis does trigger discomfort on the home front – like, in the present case, higher gas prices and more inflation (Biden warned that defending Ukraine’s freedom “will have costs for us as well”) – rest assured that people will take out their frustrations on him, further crashing his poll ratings in the run up to 2024.

The GOP appeasers want that. Putin wants that. It’s a new shared definition of savvy.

I remember the Cuban missile crisis.

VIDEO: Nevada governor, first lady accosted, threatened at Las Vegas restaurant
Las Vegas Review-Journal

Editor’s note: This story contains explicit and threatening language.

A video obtained Sunday night by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and first lady Kathy Sisolak being accosted by at least two men at a Las Vegas restaurant.

As of Monday morning, the Review-Journal had been unable to confirm the date and time of the incident. The confrontation appears to have taken place at the Lindo Michoacan restaurant at 10082 W. Flamingo Road. A spokeswoman for the governor could not be reached late Sunday night. No one at the Flamingo Road restaurant could be reached late Sunday.

In the minute-long encounter, a man with a shaved head, beard and red shirt appears to be holding a phone camera up as he wraps his left arm around the governor, who smiles briefly.

“Sisolak, right?” the man says. “This is amazing.”

“Right,” the governor responds.

Neither the governor nor restaurant patrons are wearing masks in the video, although some restaurant staff appear to be masked, suggesting that the video could have been taken sometime after Sisolak lifted Nevada’s indoor mask mandate on Feb. 10.

“I can’t tell you what a piece of f—-ing s—- you are,” the man says.

“Sorry to hear that,” Sisolak says, stepping away.

The man then states: “You New World Order traitor piece of s—- b———. You’re in here without security?”

“New World Order” is a far-right conspiracy theory which, according to ADL, holds that “a tyrannical, socialist ‘one-world’ conspiracy has already taken over most of the planet and schemes to eliminate the last bastion of freedom, the United States, with the help of collaborators within the government.”

The man continues his profanity-laced rant as the governor walks toward the restaurant’s exit with his wife, Kathy.

Another man’s voice is then heard on the video.

“I want to second that,” the other man says. “You’re a traitor. You should go down for treason, and I hope you hang.”

The governor approaches the front of the restaurant, with staff nearby, and the two men continue to shout.

“I’m surprised you have the balls to be out here in public, punk,” the first man says. “Out here without a cop. Out here without security. Wooo. You got balls on you, boy. I’m not moving.”

“Wait till we find all the money that flowed his way,” the second man says, along with an inaudible statement and a reference to “hiding the Hydroxychloroquine,” an antimalarial drug and controversial COVID-19 treatment.

“Oh man,” the first man says. “Oh, you in trouble.”

Sisolak looks toward the camera and mouths the words: “Let’s go.”

The camera follows Sisolak, and the first man yells: “Yeah, you better get the f—- out of here, Sisolak.”

A voice in the background says, “Probably a good idea to go somewhere else.” It wasn’t clear if the statement was directed at the Sisolaks or the men accosting them, and it wasn’t clear who said it.

“Where’s your security at, punk?” the man says to Sisolak. “Don’t touch me lady.”

A woman’s voice is heard: “I’m not touching you.”

Sisolak says: “She’s not touching you.”

The first man continues: “Where’s your security at? You want to sell us all down the river. You working-for-China piece of s—-.”

Sisolak and his wife exit the restaurant, stepping onto a sidewalk.

A man in a blue plaid shirt and blue jeans, standing outside, points his finger and shouts at the governor: “It’s called treason.”

The first man responds: “We should string you up by a lamp post right now, p—— boy.”

The man in the plaid shirt then states: “You know what they do to traitors? They hang traitors.”

The first voice responds: “They hang them. That’s right, patriot.”

Then the other man states: “I think it’s awesome.”

As the governor and his wife continue to walk away on the sidewalk, the first man states: “You running into a patriot now. Huh? Huh? Where’s your security at?”

McConnell speaks out against Greene and Gosar's appearance at white nationalist event

The two House conservatives attended a weekend conference organized by Nick Fuentes, a far-right fringe figure who asked attendees to give Russia "a round of applause."

Mitch McConnell said in a statement Monday afternoon: “There’s no place in the Republican Party for white supremacists or anti-Semitism.”

[How disappointing. Several people here thought there was.]

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is condemning fellow Republicans who engage with white nationalist groups, just days after GOP Reps. Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene spoke at the extremist-backed America First Political Action Conference.

Asked for comment on Greene and Gosar’s participation in the event, where far-fright fringe organizer Nick Fuentes urged the crowd to give “a round of applause for Russia,” the Republican leader said in a statement on Monday afternoon: “There’s no place in the Republican Party for white supremacists or anti-Semitism.”

GUESS THAT EXCLUDES TRUMP.

During the weekend conference, as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s army attacked Ukraine, a chant of “Putin” was heard in the crowd after Fuentes made his request for support of Moscow. Gosar spoke at the America First conference last year, when Fuentes urged the protection of the “white demographic core.”

Greene (R-Ga.) defended herself in a weekend statement after absorbing a deluge of criticism for her appearance at the America First event, criticizing the “Pharisees in the Republican Party” and arguing she “won’t abandon these young men and women” who attended. Her move nonetheless drew condemnation from several prominent Republicans including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).

And other House conservatives sought distance from Gosar and Greene. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) put it this way: “I do not apologize for other members and what they say or what they do. I do not support white supremacists, like Nick Fuentes, period.”

The Republican National Committee recently censured Cheney and Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) for their work with Democrats on investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, a punishment that prompted criticism from McConnell and many other Senate Republicans who said the RNC had unfairly singled out the duo. The retiring Kinzinger said in an interview on Monday that his party should be focused on Greene and Gosar — not him — but had little confidence in that playing out.

“What I think we should do is kick them out of the party. What do I think we’re going to do? Nothing. Liz and I can get censured, they’re going to get held up as the future leaders of the party,” he said in an interview.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy “needs to do a press conference today denouncing Greene, Gosar, Fuentes, announcing Greene and Gosar are out of the conference, there’s no room for this,” Kinzinger added. “He’s not going to do that.”

As usual he is trying to rewrite history.

Former President Donald Trump on Monday sought to recast his administration's role in bolstering Europe's security, claiming credit for strengthening NATO and arming Ukraine's military with advanced weaponry.

But critics were quick to point out that Trump, whose "America First" foreign policy slogan often reflected efforts to pull back from allies, frequently undermined NATO and once threatened to withhold military aide from Ukraine -- a move that was deemed illegal by a government watchdog and became central to Trump's first impeachment trial in Congress.

"It was Trump that undermined U.S. national security and froze military assistance to Ukraine," retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council official during the Trump administration who testified at the impeachment inquiry, told ABC News on Monday. "It was Trump's attacks on NATO and support from the far-right that encouraged Putin to believe that NATO was fragile. Trump has blood on his hands."

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Simple answer.

As our military intelligence and other intelligences began to report how the Russians were building up their forces around Ukraine, Biden and others began questioning the Russians whether they were going to invade. Putin repeatedly said no.

But Biden did not trust him. , Based on our own military and other intelligence sources, Biden said the Russians WERE planning to invade. As repeatedly as Putin denied this, Biden, on the basis of reliable spy work, kept saying the Russians WERE going to invade. He also revealed that the Russians were planning false flag activities to try to create an excuse for invading.

Biden kept right on insisting an invasion was coming, and he was right.

Now, I guess that answer is too complicated for some people here, but it sure makes sense to me.

Estranged Trump ally Chris Christie on Monday slammed the former president for declaring that Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine was a stroke of "genius" when by all accounts it has so far been a disaster for Russia.

"How can anyone with any understanding of the world call Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine 'genius' and 'very savvy' as we watch him unite the rest of the world against Russia in nearly an instant?" Christie asked on Twitter.

The former New Jersey governor then outlined how Putin had gotten himself into a geopolitical mess from which there would likely be no recovery.

Simple answer. As Russia began building up forces around Ukraine, Biden accused the Russians of planning to invade.
Putin said no, they were just holding military exercises.
Biden did not believe him, but relied instead on our own intelligence sources, and said that he WAS going to invade.

As repeatedly as Putin denied this, Biden contradicted him, and even revealed that he knew the Russians were planning “false flag” activities to try to justify an invasion.

Right up until the day Russia invaded, Biden kept insisting they were going to. And he was right.

and still think he is a son-of-a-bitch whom you hope fails miserably.

To give you another sports analogy (just to confuse you).

There are a hell of a lot of people who rooted against Tom Brady. People just didn't like him. or didn't like Bill Belichick (cheating scandal) or didn't like the Patriots... and some of that bled over to him playing for the Buccaneers.

But do you honestly believe that because they rooted against him... that they had to believe he was a poor QB and not as good as the opposing QB?

And if they admitted that Tom Brady was a better Quarterback than say Kirk Cousins - does that mean that they were also "rooting for him" to win?

I am not sure why your mind does not function on a level that allows you to believe these two things can coexist?

Is that how Goddard is telling you to think?

Being right and two bucks will get you a cup of coffee in this case.

Back in early to mid February is when this whole thing started to break out. I addressed several stories that suggested Putin was outplaying Biden and that at the end of it all, Putin would do exactly what benefited Putin and what he believes will benefit Russia and their sphere of influence.

I accused Biden of worrying too much about American politics and that Putin was in the position to only worry about Russian influence. Putin was setting the table, while Biden's approach was to pull people out and run for cover. I also suggested that it was a no win proposition for Biden for exactly this reason.

If he screamed war at the top of his lungs and Putin backed out, he would just be "wrong" and not get any credit for preventing anything. If Putin did go to war with Ukraine, then Biden was right, but did nothing to prevent it.

The Tide Has Turned Against Russia Apologists

Aaron Blake:
“For the better part of five-plus years, Donald Trump attempted to inject some nuance into the GOP’s posture toward Russia. It was a partially a strategy of necessity — given how Russia’s 2016 election interference loomed over his presidency — and partially a symptom of both Trump’s penchant for provocation and admiration for authoritarians.

"But the result was the same:
As Vladimir Putin inched toward an invasion of Ukraine,
he had plenty of isolationists,
conspiracy theorists,
rationalizers
and even apologists in prominent positions on the American right arguing for averting our eyes.

“Their argument, though,
has clearly run into reality
and fallen badly out of favor.

"And many of those who downplayed or dismissed Russia’s threat have been forced to reckon with the rather black-and-white view that has now registered with the American people.”

Clapping for Russia
and chanting for Putin
falling out of favor
at rightwing rallies, lol.

U.S. Officials Say Worst Yet to Come for Kyiv

CNN:
“Stiffer than expected Ukrainian resistance and Russia’s own logistical missteps have bogged down Russia’s advance, sparking a fragile optimism. The US has also continued sharing downgraded intelligence with the Ukrainians, including about Russian military moves, in an attempt to help Ukraine on the battlefield.

“But intelligence and defense officials closely tracking the Russian campaign say that Putin still holds a number of moves in reserve that could devastate the Ukrainian resistance.”

What did he actually DO that makes you believe that anything that European leaders are doing has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with Biden.

This is their area of the world Reverend. These are their neighbors. We are on the other side of the world with a age spotted vegetable in the White House whose sole contribution to this so far was offering to help Zelenskyy evacuate his Capital city....

because that is what Biden would have done had he been President of Ukraine.

But the EU has a lot of skin in this game and they cannot wait around for the old fart from the United State to get his fucking shit together... so they are ACTING ON THEIR OWN or possibly even IN SPITE of no leadership from our President.

But I will say he has had some influence. He probably emboldened Putin to attack and a majority of Americans agree with that!

only about a third of you believe Biden is doing a good job.
but almost two thirds believes this happened because of Biden

and that it would not have happened had Trump still been President.

So suck on that, Reverend!

You are on the losing side here.

Biden's Cuban Missle CrisisWritten by Jeff

Joe Biden's perverse legacy, if that term even applies anymore, may well be determined in the coming weeks by his handling of events in Ukraine. He can improve it by showing restraint against the relentless neoconservative chorus. One wonders what the results of a pure popular vote on the question of going to war with Russia over Ukraine would be, versus a vote solely within the D.C. beltway.

Note: Biden was silent on the recent imposition of emergency martial law by the Trudeau government in Ottawa (a few hundred miles from Washington, DC), but has plenty to say about Kiev (4,881 distant miles). This is not coincidental. As journalist Glenn Greenwald puts it, we are required by Western propaganda to denounce actions by Vladimir Putin (such as freezing the bank assets of political opponent Alexei Navalny) while cheering the same actions taken by the Canadian government against money donated to truckers. Crackdowns in "democracies" are subject to a more enlightened standard:

Much of today's Western rhetoric about the former USSR employs this language of treason, accusing war skeptics of siding with Putin. American politicians and media often veer into outright Russophobia, sometimes with a not-subtle racial animus. This flows in large part from the 2016 election of Donald Trump, which somehow had to be the result of Russian interference and not Hillary Clinton's shortcomings. It was remarkable to see so many politicians and pundits risk resurrecting a Cold War with a nuclear power simply to hurt Trump politically. But it worked: they got rid of Trump, and now the Cold War is back.

At this writing, Putin has declared the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent and autonomous from Ukraine. Russian forces have entered Ukraine and launched missiles; deaths and injuries are reported. Those troops reportedly have control over the Chernobyl power plant. Ludwig von Mises's birthplace, today called Lviv, is threatened.

In response, Biden today (Feb. 24) announced retaliatory sanctions against Russia and promised severe economic consequences for Putin's actions. Military and aerospace technology will be blocked, while Russian banks will be shut off from international markets. U.S. and E.U. officials also have considered the more severe option of removing the country from the SWIFT system of international payments, which would cut off foreign-currency purchases of oil, gas, and other Russian exports.

Still, Biden has shown restraint. Let's hope he keeps to this commitment made earlier today:

"Our forces are not and will not be engaged in the conflict," he said. "Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine but defend [sic] our NATO allies and reassure those allies in the east."

There will be plenty of voices in Biden's ear demanding more, much more. The subcurrent to Biden's election in 2020 was the return of neoconservatism with a vengeance. Many of the worst foreign policy hawks, from David Frum to Max Boot to Bill Kristol, have found their home in the Democratic Party. The GOP, for its part, is scrambling to outdo the Democrats in their bellicosity for Putin in a nauseatingly transparent effort to make Biden look weak for the upcoming midterm elections. Hence the sorry spectacle of former Trump national security advisor John Bolton — among the worst war promoters in modern history — solemnly lecturing us on MSNBC about Biden's failure to have placed U.S. troops in Ukraine weeks ago. Unless Putin's foray is short lived, rest assured that Congress, the Pentagon, the spy agencies, Biden's cabinet, and his own party leaders (mindful of polls) will call for U.S. military strikes. Some will call for American troops to defend Ukraine on the ground.

Pat Robertson: Putin's invasion of Ukraine 'is being compelled by God' to fulfill Biblical prophecy

Matthew Chapman

But former televangelist Pat Robertson, who came out of his retirement to weigh in on the situation, sees something even grander in the whole affair — according to him, Vladimir Putin is being willed by God to conduct the invasion, as a way of triggering the End Times.

"I think you can say, well, Putin's out of his mind, and yes, maybe so," said Robertson. "But at the same time he's being compelled by God. He went into Ukraine, but that wasn't his goal. His goal was to move against Israel, ultimately."

READ MORE: 'Protecting his KKK Caucus': Ocasio-Cortez shreds Kevin McCarthy for 'toothless' condemnation of Marjorie Greene

"God is getting ready to do something amazing, and that will be fulfilled," said Robertson. "And what Putin is doing, by moving as he is, to set up Ukraine as a staging ground for one of the armies, and then across is Erdogan in Turkey, and you've got between them that little Dardanelles area. And it's going to happen. So I say, that is what's coming up. Is Putin crazy? Is he mad? Well, perhaps. But God says, I'm going to put hooks in your jaws and I'm going to draw you into this battle, whether you like it or not. And he's being compelled, after the move into the Ukraine, he's being compelled to move to get a land bridge, and then across the Dardanelles with Turkey, and watch what's going to happen next. You read your Bible, because it's coming to pass."

Amen

______________

I tire of repeating myself, but here goes. Maybe you should LISTEN this time:

Biden has been an immensely helpful rallier of our allies, and in doing that, some of the things he did NOT DO WERE AS IMPORTANT AS, OR AN IMPORTANT PART OF, WHAT HE DID:

He did not draw lines in the sand like Trump.

He did not personalize the conflict like Trump.

He did not turn himself into the star of the show like Trump.

He did not allow anyone, anywhere, to believe that this was about America.

Since the invasion, unlike Trump, Biden HAS BEEN A FULL PARTNER WITH OUR EUROPEAN ALLIES.

Unlike Trump, he has not pushed them into decisions.

Unlike Trump, he recognized that having a united front was more important than any particular aspect of the response.

And after only four days Europe came to the conclusion—on its own—that it would do everything the American foreign policy establishment had wanted.

And THAT is known as effective presidential leadership!

Unlike Trump, Biden understood that these countries needed to come to the decision to fight back on their own, and not be publicly cajoled into it.

Unlike Trump, Biden also understood that the EU and NATO are very powerful, and when they work in concert with us, and we with them, we are a first class geopolitical force in today's world, as is becoming ever more evident in the powerful actions that are being taken by Germany, Sweden, and others, including ourselves.

And the list could go on and on.
And more important, IT WILL GO ON AND ON...
____

You're welcome.
Be proud to be an American, the right kind who defends democracy against all would be tyrants foreign and domestic...

This is truly the most dangerous situation in history

Leaders around the world are increasingly realizing just how deranged Putin may be, and taking steps to show other countries just what a pariah he is. The Biden Administration announced plans tosanction Putin personallylast week, putting him on the same level as other dictators like North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. In the latest salvo, Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Nations, compared Putin to Adolf Hitler, appearing to suggest Putin kill himself just like Hitler did a year after western Allied armies landed in Normandy, France, and pushed Germans back to Berlin.

“If [Putin] wants to kill himself, he doesn’t need to use nuclear arsenal. He has to do what the guy in Berlin did in a bunker in… 1945,” Kyslytsya said Monday at a United Nations General Assembly meeting on Russia’s invasion. As of Monday, Russian forces are still approximately 25 kilometers away from Kyiv, the official said—just five kilometers closer than they were this weekend. And on the way, they’ve had several setbacks.

The Biden administration isn’t sure whether the delay is due to lack of planning or running through their supplies too quickly and not executing their plans properly. But they are certainly running out of gas, the U.S. official said.“Fuel and sustainment are unique challenges to them right now,” the senior U.S. defense official said. “Our indications are that they ended up having to rely on fuel and sustainment capabilities earlier in the process than what we believed they had planned to… they’re running out of gas and they’re having logistics problems.” headtopics.com

What’s Gone Wrong for Russia In Ukraine

The Economist:
“Russia’s biggest problem appears to be logistics.
A Western official says that Russia has particular problems with engineering units.
Ukraine has blown up many bridges, and Russia has been unable to get bridging units through congested roads.
Russian tanks and other vehicles lie abandoned on the roadside, either broken-down or out of fuel, suggesting supply lines are overstretched, and support units are unable to keep up.
Marooned units are prime targets for ambushes.
Ukrainian forces have no shortage of arms with which to strike them—in recent days, Denmark, Luxembourg and Finland became the latest European countries to say they would supply thousands of anti-tank missiles.

“Nor has Russia secured the skies.
Western officials thought that Russian missiles would wipe out Ukraine’s air defences—a network of radars and surface-to-air missiles—in the first hours of a war.
In fact, the strikes were lighter than expected, possibly to conserve low stocks of precision munitions.”

According to Gallup

Clinton first term average approval was 50%
Bush's first term average approval was 62%
Obama's first term average approval was 49%

All started out with high first year approvals

Clinton first year 49.3%
Bush first year 67.9%
Obama first year 57.2%

Biden is averaging lower than any of them in his first year... and I don't see him bouncing back anytime soon. So you are suggesting that Biden will actually improve and make a big comeback.

Perhaps, but none of the Presidents you mentioned really did that. Only Clinton got better after his first year, and that was by less than a percent.
