The left tries desperately (again) to change the subject...

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Biden, Russia annexes part of Ukraine and we just sort of watch

Of course, to hear it told by the leftist media, the real story is how Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, the Rothschilds, and the trilateral commission are all conspiring to undermine the President at a time of crisis.

They seem unconcerned that Putin just one day declared part of Ukraine to be no longer part of Ukraine and sent troops over there to act as "peacekeepers" - effectively annexing another part of the old Soviet Union back under the Russian umbrella. But boy oh boy, are they concerned that some people are pointing out that in comparison to Biden that Putin looks like a genius, and that unlike Biden Putin seems to have a well planned out strategy, and that Putin appears "savvy" whereas Biden appears lost. Moreover the word "savvy" has actually created a huge buzz because it was uttered by both Trump and Carlson, which apparently implies a massive conspiracy here.

But the fact that Putin has already sent troops into what used to be Ukraine a few days ago and we have done nothing but suggest some less than robust sanctions is not much of a story here. Neither is the idea that our press secretary has basically provided the world with the lame strategy that we are holding back the bigger sanctions in case Putin does something even meaner. Nothing like providing your enemies with our strategy.

Ironically you even have some liberal journalists demanding that Biden is performing brilliantly. That he is not lost, but being patient. That he is not looking feckless, but just providing Putin with an out. That he is rallying our allies together like nobody before, even as in reality it is Putin's actions (not Biden's leadership) that puts everyone on the same side here. But of course, patience will just allow Putin to move forward. Putin isn't looking for an out. Everyone being against Putin only matters if they are willing to do more than talk and threaten sanctions.

But according to some, none of this matters. What really matters is Trump and FOX news.

Go figure!

Ukraine imposes state of emergency amid fears of Russian attack
By David L. Stern
KYIV — Ukraine’s parliament approved a nationwide state of emergency that takes effect Thursday amid fears that Russian forces could push deeper into Ukraine.
The state of emergency — backed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — puts some restrictions on movement and imposes other limits “in the interests of national security and public order.”
Pope Francis said Wednesday that the prospect of war in Ukraine caused “great pain in my heart,” and he condemned actions “destabilizing coexistence among nations and discrediting international law.”

Reacting to a first wave of U.S. sanctions after Russian troops deployed into two pro-Moscow separatist regions of eastern Ukraine, Russia warned that Americans will fully feel the “consequences.” President Biden has acknowledged that the crisis could lead to higher gasoline prices.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Tuesday night that he was calling up the country’s military reservists after Russian lawmakers voted to give Putin the authority to send troops into eastern Ukraine.
The move also placed some controls on political activity, apparently aimed at pro-Moscow parties. Ukrainian leaders have raised alarms over potential efforts by the Kremlin to use allies in Ukraine to stir unrest or push Russian propaganda.
The decision was the latest sign that Ukraine was bracing for a possible full-scale Russian invasion after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine and sent in Russian forces.

NEW YORK (AP) — The two prosecutors in charge of the Manhattan district attorney’s criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump and his business dealings suddenly resigned Wednesday, throwing the future of the probe into question.

A spokesperson for District Attorney Alvin Bragg confirmed the resignations of Carey Dunne and former mafia prosecutor Mark Pomerantz. Both started on the probe under former District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and were asked to stay when Bragg took office in January.

Dunne, the office's former general counsel, argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in a successful fight for Trump’s tax records. Pomerantz was brought out of private practice by Vance last year to add his expertise in white collar investigations to the probe.

“We are grateful for their service," said Bragg's spokesperson, Danielle Filson. She declined to comment further, saying the investigation is ongoing.

The New York Times, citing sources, reported that Dunne and Pomerantz quit after Bragg raised doubts about pursuing a case against Trump.

Even the conservative Wall Street Journal reports what I said before the cold war era has ended. And Biden has to step up like Churchill and FDR

PHOTO: ALEXANDER ERMOCHENKO/REUTERS

This is no time for hair-splitting and half-measures. Vladimir Putin is invading Ukraine and denies that it is an independent, sovereign nation. The post-Cold War era is over. The West must adopt a new strategy to protect democracy in Europe. It won’t be easy.

In recent years, as both Republicans and Democrats abandoned hopes that China’s rise wouldn’t disrupt the U.S.-led economic and geopolitical order, a new consensus has developed: The U.S. must expand its alliances in the Indo-Pacific and strengthen its capacity to defend against Chinese aggression. Many hoped the U.S. could do this while sustaining the status quo in Europe. But this strategy presupposed that Russia would have neither the strength nor the will to disrupt the prevailing security order.

As recently as 2014, President Obama described Russia as a “regional power.” Even then, this characterization was questionable. Now it is untenable. Over the past 15 years, Mr. Putin has rebuilt the Russian military and has demonstrated its capacity to deploy substantial forces by land, sea and air, in Europe and beyond.

The U.S. faces challenges to its interests and principles on two major fronts, not one. It doesn’t have the luxury of redeploying military assets and diplomatic focus from Europe to Asia. The U.S. must focus on both fronts, but it is hard to see how it can do so without a larger military budget and a beefed-up governance structure in the White House, State Department and Defense Department.

Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who rarely misses an opportunity to be wrong, recently said that “In the new era we’re entering in Europe, we’re going to have to do more with less.” This is a dangerous fantasy. It will take more to do more. The Russian military move will trigger requests for additional assistance and troop deployments from every NATO member that shares a border with Russia, Ukraine or Belarus. In an interview Tuesday, retired Gen. Ben Hodges, the former commander of the U.S. Army in Europe, recommended that the U.S. organize Berlin Airlift-style weapons shipments to Ukraine and a massive expansion of Western assistance to block Russia’s efforts at squeezing Ukraine’s economy and replacing Volodymyr Zelensky’s government with pliable puppets.

The emerging battle for Europe will force other countries to confront questions they have long avoided. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has bragged about the expansion of his country’s defense spending. Although there have been some increases in recent years, the defense budget for 2022 amounts to only 1.5% of Germany’s gross domestic product. A credible German response to the Russian invasion would begin with a swift hike to the NATO minimum of 2%. I say this as a Jew born less than a year after the end of World War II: It is time for Germany to rearm.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

It is also time for Germany to recognize that World War II ended more than three-quarters of a century ago and that policies it adopted in the wake of the war have outlived their rationale. Its refusal to sell or share German-made weapons with Ukraine, for example, has been widely (and justly) rebuked. In today’s new reality, continuing this policy is inexcusable.

Mr. Scholz has halted the certification process for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. It should never resume. Germany needs to wean itself from its dangerous dependence on Russian energy, which has fostered unhealthy relationships between the two countries’ elites.

France also faces some long-postponed decisions. Since the time of Charles de Gaulle, Paris has been ambivalent about NATO, which it regards as an instrument of Anglo-American policy. President Emmanuel Macron’s advocacy European defense force reflects this belief, as does his effort to mediate controversy between Russia and Ukraine.

Mr. Macron cannot be blamed for trying to expand his country’s influence in world affairs. But now that Vladimir Putin has shown his contempt for diplomacy by invading Ukraine, continuing a French stance of mediation would only weaken the united front the West must maintain against an autocrat who has wantonly broken the peace of Europe and threatens to upend the security structure that European democracies, backed by the U.S., have maintained since 1945.

The challenge extends beyond Europe’s two strongest countries. Generations of postwar Europeans have convinced themselves the use of force is no longer necessary to settle disputes between nations. They believed diplomacy, backed by international law and institutions, was the 21st-century way of keeping peace.

Against this backdrop, the Russian invasion of Ukraine should trigger a crisis of European identity. If force is a permanent feature of international relations, the European Union must either take more responsibility for its own defense or admit that it has subcontracted this job to the U.S. indefinitely, along with some of the EU’s strategic independence.

This is no time for hesitation. President Biden must lead without ambivalence, and members of the Western alliance must endure short-term discomfort to protect democracy’s future. The alternative is a repetition of 1938.

The real reason Putin played a kitty during the Trump presidency
By The Bharat Express News- February 23, 20220

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Illustrated | Getty Images, iStock
Republicans have long had a fetish of toughness. Going back to the early days of the Cold War, its flip side has been the insinuation that the Democrats are weaklings ready to sell the country to its enemies, the GOP eager to serve proudly and shamelessly as America’s sole defenders. abroad.

No one should be surprised that the script has already been updated to reflect recent harrowing events on the border between Russia and Ukraine.

At the end of last week, Conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt observed in a tweet that “tyrant Putin invaded Ukraine in 2014 and will do so again in 2022 but did not in 2017-2020”. Without mentioning his name, Hewitt hinted that Putin had become a kitty due to Donald Trump’s unwavering leadership as president.

ALSO READ EU slams plan to expand water use near Spain's Doñana Park
But wait – wasn’t he Trump Putin’s lapdog during his entire presidency, refusing to say anything critical about him and even siding with Putin’s denial of Russian interference during 2016 elections against evidence provided by America’s own intelligence services?

No doubt realizing the absurdity of the assertion, National examby Rich Lowry (and others) jumped in a few days later to add a layer of nuance to the statement. It’s not that Trump was tougher than President Biden, but that he was more erratic: “Trump’s sheer unpredictability, his anger at being challenged or disrespected, his willingness to occasionally take big risks (the Soleimani strike), whatever Putin either feared him or mistrusted him in a way that he just isn’t Joe Biden.”

ALSO READ Thousands block roads and chant slogans during 'freedom convoy' protest in Canada
There may be some truth in this revision of the thesis. Trump was indeed volatile, impulsive and capricious. It is certainly possible that Putin feared action against Ukraine would trigger a massive military response from Trump.

But it’s much more likely that he was hoping for something very different. As Jonathan Last ostensibly suggested on Tuesday in his newsletter for the rampart, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the United States to withdraw completely from NATO. He did it during his presidential campaign in 2016. He did it as president. And apparently he even made it clear to advisers that he hopes to make it a reality after his re-election in 2020.

The story continues

Since such a withdrawal is Putin’s dearest wish, it makes much more sense to assume that his relative restraint during the Trump presidency was a function of a reasonable expectation that he could get whatever he wanted without having to shoot. Only now, with a minus… unorthodox As US president-in-charge, war has become Putin’s only way to advance his more immediate goal of ensuring NATO does not move closer to Russian territory.

If you want to stop Putin from moving on Kyiv then you will need to provide military assistance to Ukraine. We might even need NATO or even US troops. Nothing short of that will stop Putin if Putin has decided to take it.

The question, Roger... is whether or not we want to involve ourselves in that dispute. We spend years in Korea and Vietnam trying to stop the bad guys (in our mind) from taking over the good guys (in our mind). What did it get us?

What we cannot do... is pretend that there is a halfway measure here. Sanctions are not going to stop Putin and sanctions against Russia that end up hurting Americans are not going to be very popular.

You have to be willing to be a bit crazy if you want to stop crazy Roger.

In the history of US sanctions against Russia there has never been one that's been effective.

Not ONE.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Not political but it's terrible

Russian state media reported Wednesday that rebel leaders in Donetsk and Luhansk — two breakaway regions in Eastern Ukraine — have asked President Vladimir Putin to provide military assistance to defend against Ukrainian “aggression” and prevent a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

The Ukrainian military warned earlier this week that Russian-backed mercenaries had been sent to the area to stage “provocations” as a possible pretext for invasion.

The Russian state news service Tass reported that the two Moscow-backed breakaway regions Putin formally recognized as independent earlier this week had asked the Kremlin to help push the Ukrainian military out of the area.

"They are asking the President of Russia to provide assistance in repulse the aggression of the armed forces and formations of Ukraine,” Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying.

Putin had said earlier this week he was sending troops into the territories to carry out what he called “peacekeeping functions.”

The Ukrainian military this week warned that Russian-backed mercenaries had been sent to the area to stage "provocations."

“The purpose of these provocations will, of course, be to accuse Ukraine of further escalation,” it said.

Around the time of the Tass report, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. believes Russia is poised to launch an assault on Ukraine. "What we see is that Russian forces continue to assemble closer to the border and put themselves in an advance stage of readiness to act," Kirby said.

He said an attack could come "virtually any time now. We believe they’re ready."

A senior U.S. defense official earlier said that Russian troops range from about 3 miles to 30 miles (5 kilometers to 50 kilometers) from the border. Russia also has more than 10 landing ships in the Black Sea with troops on board.

The Biden administration had warned this week that an invasion was imminent and could include the capital, Kyiv. U.S. officials seemed more confident Wednesday that such a scenario was about to become a reality.

The Ukrainian government, which had been previously cooler about the likelihood of war, declared a state of emergency starting on Thursday. Government leaders urged all of their citizens to leave Russia immediately and started calling up military reservists.

Sure Roger... I read a couple of these similar opinion pieces today. But they miss something very important.

If Putin's goal was instability in NATO and that is why he didn't do anything while Trump was President... then why would Putin decide to "unite" NATO by making this sort of play against Ukraine?

Moreover, why should Putin care one way or the other if Ukraine was in NATO unless his ultimate goal was to invade and annex parts of Ukraine? Then if that was his intention all along, why not do it when NATO was instable?

Why wait (like you argue) till NATO was strong under the wonderful leadership of Joe Biden? That makes no sense...

The latest on covid---
Is the abrupt move away from mask mandates happening too soon, or is it long overdue? Ask residents in any of the blue states where officials recently dropped mask requirements and you'll find adamant voices on both sides. But more people appear to be welcoming the change as the nation seeks to close the books on the era of mandatory masking. “It’s a choice right now, which is probably what it should have been," one Delaware resident told The Washington Post.

Ask a public health expert, on the other hand, and you're much more likely to hear arguments for keeping the requirements, at least for a little longer. A large body of evidence shows masking slows coronavirus transmission, protecting the wearer and the people around them. For some, that's reason enough to keep covering up.

Other than that, mysterious heart problems are arising in some people who’ve had covid-19, even those with mild cases. The prevalence of such symptoms suggests a cardiac crisis may be on the horizon, my colleague Ariana Eunjung Cha reports. More data is needed, but experts worry about a coming wave of cardiovascular problems directly and indirectly related to the virus. Patient advocacy groups are calling on President Biden and other leaders to invest in research and treatment, and to prepare the health-care system for the potential long-term consequences of a rise in post-covid heart problems.

For ANYONE paying ANY attention whatsoever to what we are finding out today, the reality is quite different. Almost every study that now accounts or nearly two years of data has concluded that mask mandates have not worked to any degree at all. The data graphed out shows two lines running in almost exactly on top of each other. In fact the graphing has shown times when areas that had no mask mandates had lower infection rates than areas that had them.

This is simply someone holding onto "outdated" opinions that were never actually built on science (if you consider that science needs to prove hypotheses through experiment). Sure, there was "SCIEN... tists who insisted that paper and cloth masks worked brilliantly, but the data has proven them wrong after two years of gathering it.

Now these same scientists have suggested that while paper and cloth masks do not work, that N95 and KN95 masks will. Perhaps that is true, perhaps it's no more true than what they said about general masking.

But why even present an article, Reverend.

Tucker Carlson accused of being an 'arm of the Kremlin' -- by a former Trump official

Brad Reed

February 23, 2022

Former Trump official Alyssa Farah said on Wednesday that Fox News host Tucker Carlson had essentially become a propagandist for the Russian government.

While appearing on CNN, Farah was asked by host Jake Tapper what she made of former President Donald Trump's comments gushing about Russian President Vladimir Putin's "genius" move to invade Ukraine.

"It's not surprising," she said. "The former president had a soft spot for strong men, including Vladimir Putin. We saw that throughout his presidency."

Farah then suggested, however, that Trump wasn't the one taking the lead on pushing pro-Russian propaganda.

"I think the former president, as well as other prominent Republicans, are taking their pointer from one place, and that's Tucker Carlson's show on Fox News," she said. "He has become essentially an arm of the Kremlin and what he is talking about, what he is saying is indistinguishable from RT propaganda."

We have no real justification to get involved militarily and our decisions to even get involved with Sanctions is not really all that obvious (other than the idea that we are police of the world?).

The President has put himself at risk today °°°

The White House is prepping Americans for the likelihood that sanctions on Russia will have a ripple effect that hits their pocketbooks.

President Biden and other administration officials acknowledge the steps the U.S. and European nations are taking to deter Moscow from further aggression against Ukraine are likely to spur higher gas prices. But they argue defending an ally and trying to stop a war in Europe is a worthy cause.

“As I said last week, defending freedom will have costs for us as well and here at home,” Biden said in a speech on Tuesday. “We need to be honest about that. But as we do this, I’m going to take robust action to make sure the pain of our sanctions is targeted at the Russian economy, not ours.”

Asked later Tuesday if officials are specifically referring to the likelihood Americans will see higher gasoline prices, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “Yeah, energy prices. Exactly.”

Biden on Tuesday announced an initial round of sanctions on several Russian banks and elites and their families. The move came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin took the dramatic step of recognizing as independent two breakaway regions of Ukraine and deploying troops to the areas.

Oil prices climbed Wednesday, with the price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate Crude for April delivery rising 33 cents to $92.24 shortly after 5 p.m. Experts believe prices are likely to shoot higher if Russia’s invasion into Ukraine widens and Western nations impose new sanctions — and higher still if Russia’s actions in Eastern Europe disrupt the energy market to which it is a major contributor.

Stocks also fell on the prospect of higher oil prices and deeper global disruption.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.4 percent, with a loss of more than 460 points, closing in the red for the fifth consecutive day of trading. The Nasdaq composite closed with a loss of 2.6 percent, and the S&P 500 fell 1.8 percent after already falling 10 percent below an all-time high earlier this year.

Biden is already in a politically precarious position. Inflation is high and has been a concern for months, and the situation in Russia threatens to exacerbate the issue. While the purpose of sanctions is to squeeze the Russian economy, it could have the secondary effect of tightening supplies of energy and critical minerals Russia supplies to Europe, upsetting global markets as a result.

“Should the Russian incursion into eastern Ukraine turn into a full-fledged invasion, it is likely that the global and U.S. economies will absorb yet another supply shock,” wrote Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at audit and tax firm RSM, in a Tuesday analysis.

Why should I care if the frogs or krauts don’t want to defend themselves.

England, Poland, Japan, OZ and A few other small Euro countries and India will defend themselves. That’s the “NATO” of the future, countries that pay their weight

It's not libertarian to point out that Russia is not our enemy and Ukraine is not our ally. They are two states on the other side of the world who in many ways are two sides of the same coin.

Now apparently the West believes that we all have a stake in this and that Putin cannot be allowed to run over Ukraine.

But at the same time, if you take everything at face value, what you have is parts of Ukraine who at least on the surface do not want to be part of Ukraine anymore. Being a separatist group means that they are rebelling against the larger Government (in this case Ukraine, not Russia).

Now can we actually take that at face value? I don't know. Perhaps it's just a small group of people speaking for a larger group that disagrees? But as someone whose wife works in a Russian shop (Two Russians, a Ukrainian, Moldovan, Belarusian, and a guy from Turkey) - there are a variety of opinions on the subject.

Many from that region like their independence while others would like to rebuild the old Soviet Union.
