Are the Russian advances stalled or is that wishful reporting?

Russians now tie their southern/eastern waves and are attacking the city of Izlum

Not trying to be the bearer of bad news or trying to be "rootin for Putin" but while there has been not much progress made up north around Kyiv (where most of the attention is focused) the Russian troops are having far more success in the southeastern portions of the country.

The fighting pretty much anywhere but around Kyiv has been largely ignored by the media. The buzz as of this morning was that all Russian advances had pretty much stalled. But if you are looking at the various maps day to day, you will see that there is movement in other areas of the country. Not a swift move by any stretch of the imagination, but movement nonetheless.

For the first time, there is a map showing no more gap between the eastern and southern waves. While the line looks like it might no more than a highway, that strategically ties their two waves together which conceivably allows them better supply lines and such. From what everyone has stated, the Ukrainian forces down south have been much more prone to retreat north and west and consolidate elsewhere, rather than to stay and defend some of these smaller southern cities.

Meanwhile, they are upping the attacks on the port city of Odessa. If this were to fall into Russian hands, then Ukraine would be pretty much shut off from the Black Sea completely. Heavy artillery has been reported to be hitting Odessa pretty heavy and has been going on for some time. From there it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see that red area from that map just sort of filling in the gaps and moving inwards from the East and upwards from the North.

Ultimately I think as long as Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, the propaganda battle is on the side of the Ukrainians. But winning a propaganda battle doesn't actually mean you are winning the war.

Breaking news that shows that you are fully insane.

The CIA has been training soldiers in Ukraine for years in advance

At least some of the fierce resistance by Ukrainian forces has its roots in a now shuttered covert CIA training program run from Ukraine’s eastern frontlines, former intelligence officials tell Yahoo News. The initiative was described to Yahoo News by over half a dozen former officials, all of whom requested anonymity to speak freely about sensitive intelligence matters.

The program was run under previously existing authorities for the CIA and did not require a new legal determination for the agency, known as a covert action finding, according to a former national security official.

As part of the Ukraine-based training program, CIA paramilitaries taught their Ukrainian counterparts sniper techniques; how to operate U.S.-supplied Javelin anti-tank missiles and other equipment; how to evade digital tracking the Russians used to pinpoint the location of Ukrainian troops, which had left them vulnerable to attacks by artillery; how to use covert communications tools; and how to remain undetected in the war zone while also drawing out Russian and insurgent forces from their positions, among other skills, according to former officials.

After Russia’s 2014 incursion, the U.S. military also helped run a long-standing, publicly acknowledged training program for Ukrainian troops in the country’s western region, far from the frontlines. That program also included instruction in how to use Javelin anti-tank missiles and sniper training.

Yahoo News reported in January on the CIA’s secret U.S.-based training initiative for Ukrainian special operations forces and other intelligence personnel. That program, which began in 2015, also included instruction in firearms, camouflage techniques and covert communications. Yahoo News’ prior report also revealed that CIA paramilitaries had traveled to eastern Ukraine to assist forces loyal to Kyiv in their fight against Russia and its separatist allies.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

It started under Trump.

CIA leadership and White House officials both understood — but still fretted over — the risks. “I don’t know how we didn’t get anybody injured, to be honest,” says the former senior intelligence official. But the covert nature of the mission ensured deniability. U.S. officials “wouldn’t want to say, We just had a CIA officer killed by a Russian” in Ukraine, recalled the former official. “That would put the president or the White House in a very bad position.”

The Ukraine-based CIA program operated for years, according to former officials. But as the threat of a large-scale Russian invasion became increasingly acute last month, the Biden administration, still feeling the sting of the Afghanistan withdrawal, pulled all CIA personnel out of the country, including war-zone-hardened agency paramilitaries, according to a former intelligence official in close touch with colleagues in U.S. government.

The administration was “terrified of even clandestine folks being on the frontline,” says the former official.

But even if the CIA’s cadre of paramilitary trainers are no longer in Ukraine, the effect of the agency’s training programs — both in the U.S. and on Ukraine’s eastern front — “cannot be overestimated,” said the former senior CIA official. These elite units trained by the agency have created “a strong nucleus” for Ukraine’s larger military forces today, according to this official.

In addition to the hard skills these operatives are bringing to the fight with Russian troops, some of the benefits are more intangible, according to former officials. The CIA-trained special operations units set an example by “getting some small wins” and by “providing some success stories” for the larger Ukrainian military, says the former senior official.

“He’s a war criminal,” the president said of Putin as he left an unrelated event. It’s the sharpest condemnation yet of Putin and Russian actions by a U.S. official since the invasion of Ukraine.

While other world leaders have used the words, the White House had been hesitant to declare Putin’s actions those of a war criminal, saying it was a legal term that required research.

The president did pledge to arm the Ukrainian military with drones, a step he said “demonstrates our commitment to sending the most cutting-edge systems to Ukraine for its defense.” Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the top GOP lawmakers on the House Foreign Affairs Comittee, told POLITICO the drones are armed Switchblades — small, light drones that can loiter in the air for up to 30 minutes before being directed to their target by an operator on the ground who could be miles away.

“This could be a long and difficult battle, but the American people will be steadfast in our support of the people of Ukraine in the face of Putin’s immoral, unethical attacks on civilian populations,” Biden said. “We are united in the abhorrence of depraved onslaught, and we are going to continue to have their backs as they fight for their freedom, their democracy, their very survival.”

The $800 million in new funding announced by Biden comes from the $13.6 billion aid package signed into law Tuesday. But just $3.5 billion of that figure is allocated toward military aid to Ukraine, according to a House of Representatives fact sheet.

The new assistance package comes in the form of direct transfers of equipment from the Department of Defense to Ukraine. It includes a host of weapons for civilian and military use: 800 anti-aircraft missiles; 9,000 anti-armor systems; 7,000 small arms, like machine guns, shotguns and grenade launchers; 20 million rounds of ammunition; body armor; and drones. The inclusion of drones “demonstrates our commitment to sending the most cutting-edge systems to Ukraine for its defense,” Biden said.

New York (CNN Business)Oil prices are soaring to seven-year highs, but don't expect US oil producers to ramp up supply.

On the face of it, it's an ideal time for US firms to cash in on high prices after Russia's invasion of Ukraine: Traders are nervous about purchasing Russian oil due to uncertainty about the situation, though those exports aren't subject to current sanctions. And other major producers like Saudi Arabia have indicated they won't fill the global supply gap.
Making more US oil could net a tidy profit for producers while lowering prices at the pump for drivers. But several issues are stopping these companies from scaling up production.
Like many industries during the pandemic, oil producers are struggling with a shortage of workers. They're also having trouble sourcing some of the equipment they would need to ramp up production, including pipes and specialized sand used in fracking to extract shale oil.
"They can't find people, and can't find equipment," said Robert McNally, president of consulting firm Rapidan Energy Group. "It's not like they're available at a premium price. They're just not available."
As a result, US oil production is just under 12 million barrels a day, 8% lower than in 2019. Experts say the industry is unlikely to get back to that pre-pandemic level this year — and that the last decade's rapid increases in US oil production, typically double-digit percentages year-over-year, are probably a thing of the past.

Another factor likely making oil companies cautious about investing too much, too fast is 2020's oil bust. The early days of the pandemic drove oil briefly to negative pricing, resulting in a spate of bankruptcies across the industry.

Even modern Republicans don't like Biden's decision on no fly zone

Before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy even started his address to Congress, Republicans had settled on their response: President Joe Biden is too weak on Russia.

In the run-up to the speech, GOP leaders criticized Biden for being slow to punish Vladimir Putin and displayed a growing hawkishness after years of drifting toward the non-interventionist mold embodied by former President Donald Trump. They portrayed Biden as a step behind on all things Ukraine, ignoring the president’s emphasis on balancing global coalitions and moving together with allies.

Republicans’ criticism only grew louder after Zelenskyy called for a no-fly zone and more assistance to beat back Russia in remarks to lawmakers, specifically urging an aircraft transfer that would give Ukraine more firepower. Amid another day of attacks on Ukraine, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise dubbed the ongoing war a “genocide” — a word that implies the United States needs to engage in far greater intervention.

“Our own president needs to step up his game. We’re not doing nearly enough quickly enough to help the Ukrainians,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, adding: “Comparing Zelenskyy to Biden is depressing.”

It's pretty rare for more aggressive military actions..

Even because he is the son of the President, the Federal Investigation Continues Into Hunter Biden. Can you imagine the son of Trump being investigated?

March 16, 2022 at 8:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

“In the year after he disclosed a federal investigation into his “tax affairs” in late 2020, President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, paid off a significant tax liability, even as a grand jury continued to gather evidence in a wide-ranging examination of his international business dealings,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Biden’s failure to pay all his taxes has been a focus of the ongoing Justice Department investigation. While wiping out his liability does not preclude criminal charges against him, the payment could make it harder for prosecutors to win a conviction or a long sentence for tax-related offenses, according to tax law experts, since juries and judges tend to be more sympathetic to defendants who have paid their bills.”

Florida Republicans are lying about their Don’t Say Gay bill, because what they passed is so odious:

In the week since Florida lawmakers passed H.B. 1557, dubbed the “don’t say gay” bill, the law’s most prominent supporters have refused to publicly tell the truth about what the measure actually says. According to the law’s sponsors and cheerleaders, H.B. 1557 is a simple ban on teaching very young students about sex. It is needed, they say, to prevent “groomers”—specifically, gay and trans teachers—from attempting to corrupt and indoctrinate children with explicit classroom materials. The “don’t say gay” moniker, they insist, is misleading: Teachers and students can still talk about LGBTQ issues; they just can’t force 8-and-unders to learn about gay sex and gender transition.

This framing of H.B. 1557, which Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign into law, is, objectively, a lie. It is refuted by the text of the bill itself, as well as its legislative history, which shows that Republican lawmakers rejectedefforts to turn the measure into a straightforward prohibition on sex education in early grades. In reality, H.B. 1557 uses intentionally vague language to outlaw a huge amount of speech about LGBTQ people, families, and issues—not just sex—in every grade. And it relies upon a vigilante enforcement mechanism to chill an even broader amount of speech by subjecting violators to humiliating investigations and ruinous lawsuits. The fact that H.B. 1557’s supporters lie about these basic facts suggests that they know their bill is indefensible and must conceal its true meaning to drag it over the finish line.

[…]

Even if no parent ever sues under H.B. 1557, the threat of enforcement will hang over school districts. Just as doctors stopped performing abortions when Texas passed S.B. 8, teachers will stop mentioning LGBTQ issues once this bill takes effect. That’s the point: The law has a chilling effect on speech, frightening educators into silence. A parent can ruin teachers’ lives by filing a complaint or a lawsuit; even if a teacher is ultimately exonerated, they will have suffered through an intrusive investigation and faced accusation of misconduct—or “grooming”—that will never fade away completely. Many reasonable educators would rather stay quiet than risk a months- or yearslong probe into their classroom speech, one that may well end in their dismissal or, at a minimum, a permanently stained reputation.

H.B. 1557’s proponents are correct that the bill does not use the word gay. But this reductive defense exploits the measure’s unusual structure to obscure its inevitable impact. If the law were defensible on its own merits, Republicans would not resort to these facile lies when making the case for its passage.

I recommend the whole piece, which is very thorough in exposing this particular Big Republican Lie. The Supreme Court blessing Texas’s Stasi tactics, in particular, is going to do an incredible amount of damage to a variety of fundamental rights.

The need for accountability extends to anyone who promoted the use of the Moderna and Pfizer products while having full knowledge that they were not bona fide vaccines as described herein.

Dr. Johnson states, "World governments and global and national health organizations are all complicit in this illegal deception and must be held accountable."

In conclusion, Dr. Martin makes a most sobering comment: "These injections are not vaccines.  They do not prevent infection, they do not render you immune, and they do not prevent transmission of the disease.  Instead, they alter your genetic coding."

Given the above, perhaps it is time for several state attorneys general to band together and thoroughly investigate the activities of Moderna, Pfizer, and various individuals in this matter.

You know how many times the Trump kids were called in and questioned about Russian collusion and such? Some accused Don Jr of receiving information from the Russians.

There are currently 19 separate investigation of Trump, Trump Org, and the Trump family in general.

Hunter Biden almost certainly broke the law in ways that others have been prosecuted for. Not like Trump, where they are generally "making stuff up" to find criminal actions.

Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has plunged the world into its worst military crisis since the end of the Cold War. From the U.S. standpoint, the war carries two opposing dangers: We could underreact, and thus let Russia get away with unprovoked aggression that will destroy the world order. Or we can overreact, allowing the conflict to spiral out of control. Put another way: We can’t afford to start a larger war, but we also can’t afford to let Russia win.
President Biden has mostly done a good job of walking this narrow line. He has rejected, for example, dangerous calls for a no-fly zone that would force U.S. troops into combat with the Russians. But Biden has erred too far on the side of caution by refusing Poland’s offer to supply Ukraine with its MiG-29 fighter jets. The administration’s position is that Ukraine doesn’t really need the aircraft and that providing them would be a dangerous escalation.

We shouldn’t let an aggressor veto aid to his victims. If the Ukrainians say they want MiG-29’s, we should provide them. We should also send anti-ship missiles, S-300 antiaircraft missiles armed drones, and lots more munitions of all kinds to replenish Ukrainian stockpiles. The volume of weapons is already high but needs to be higher.

What is the difference, anyway, between shooting down a Russian airplane with a Stinger missile or a MiG-29? The Soviets supplied fighter aircraft to North Korea and North Vietnam to shoot down U.S. aircraft; in Korea, some of those planes were even flown by Russian and Chinese pilots. The United States, for its part, supplied Nationalist China in 1941 with both aircraft and former U.S. military pilots — the famed Flying Tigers — to fight Japanese aggression. That is how great-power competition works. As long as U.S. personnel are not firing on Russians, Ukraine is still a proxy war — and not a precursor to World War III.

The fate of hundreds of people sheltering in a Mariupol theater that was destroyed remained unclear Thursday after Ukrainian officials said rescue efforts were hampered by rubble and continued shelling. City officials said the theater was targeted Wednesday by a Russian airstrike; Moscow denied responsibility. Satellite photos from before the attack showed the word “children,” written in large letters on the ground in Russian on both sides of the theater. Meanwhile, in the northern city of Chernihiv, where heavy fighting has been ongoing continued for weeks, at least 10 people were killed by Kremlin Russian forces Wednesday while waiting in line for bread, U.S. and Ukrainian officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky compared the Russian bombardment of Mariupol to the Nazis’ attack on Leningrad during World War II, a siege that lasted more than two years and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. “Our hearts are broken by what Russia is doing to our people. To our Mariupol,” Zelensky said in a video address, one of several appeals he made Wednesday — one of them to Congress — for international assistance in repelling the Russian invasion.
Ukrainian officials announced nine humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to flee besieged cities on Thursday, as well as plans to deliver aid to places in need — a day after they said escape routes were being targeted by Russian forces. More than 3 million refugees have left Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion last month, according to the United Nations.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has unleashed a chorus of despair—beyond the cost in Ukrainian lives, the international order that the U.S. and its allies built after World War II is, we are told, crumbling. The writer Paul Kingsnorth has declared that the liberal order is already dead. The Indian journalist Rahul Shivshankar has argued that “in the ruins across Ukraine you will find the remains of Western arrogance.” Even the brilliant historian Margaret MacMillan has written that “the world will never be the same. We have moved already into a new and unstable era.”

The reverse is true. Vladimir Putin has attempted to crush Ukraine’s independence and “Westernness” while also demonstrating NATO’s fecklessness and free countries’ unwillingness to shoulder economic burdens in defense of our values. He has achieved the opposite of each. Endeavoring to destroy the liberal international order, he has been the architect of its revitalization.

Ch, you are so perverse. Right now there are renewed fears that the upsurge in Europe (and possibly in China, leading to a new lockdown there) could portend a coming upsurge in our own country.

So far, every time we have relaxed masking and distancing requirements, not to mention the rediculous fact that all too many Americans still remain unvaccinated, we have paid for it later in increased cases.

But you just want to play politics, politics, politics all the time, without genuine regard for human health and safety.

And by the way, I am too busy these days doing more important things, but you guys had better keep going to politicalwire.com if you want to get a more fair and balanced sense of what really is currently going on regarding Ukraine, etc.
