Bottom line - Democrats are the side gerrymandering and for the most part getting away with it

Supreme Court Decision on Redistricting Leaves Democrats Reeling The sad truth is that in areas of the country where liberals control everything, there is aggressive gerrymandering to the point where in places like New York and California there will be almost no Republican representation. Whereas new maps being drawn in GOP states have been muted and in some cases challenged by state courts. In one state, the courts have rejected three different maps, holding out for a Republican state with a Republican Governor that has turned more Republican to draw a map that adds more Democratic seats.

So the fact that the USSC actually overruled the Wisconsin State Court on this one is a big win, and a sign that they could win other cases that are eventually brought before the top court. At the end of the day most of these state laws leave this stuff to the Legislation (and Judges are only supposed to get involved if there is real constitutional issues involved). The Wisconsin State Court was demanding that the maps drawn by the legislator was in violation of the Voting Rights Act (which seems to be invoked every time a map is drawn that liberals do not like). The USSC basically drew the opposite conclusion with only two Justices dissenting.

It was a victory for the United States of America...

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a victory for Democrats, the Supreme Court has turned away efforts from Republicans in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to block state court-ordered congressional districting plans.

In separate orders late Monday, the justices are allowing maps selected by each state’s Supreme Court to be in effect for the 2022 elections. Those maps are more favorable to Democrats than the ones drawn by the states’ legislatures.

In North Carolina, the map most likely will give Democrats an additional House seat in 2023.

The Pennsylvania map also probably will lead to the election of more Democrats, the Republicans say, as the two parties battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections in November.

The justices provided no explanation for their actions, as is common in emergency applications on what is known as the “shadow docket.”

While the high court did not stop the state court-ordered plans from being used in this year’s elections, four conservative justices indicated they want it to confront the issue that could dramatically limit the power of state courts over federal elections in the future. The Republicans argued that state courts lack the authority to second-guess legislatures’ decisions about the conduct of elections for Congress and the presidency.

Federalism is no longer the law of the land... The Republican's are afraid of the voice of the people.

This took away, the power of legislators to overturn election results, by state legislators.

But while many countries have promised weapons to help bolster the Ukrainian arsenal, some have not kept up the supply.

Paul Grod, president of the Ukrainian World Congress, told the newspaper that some nations – including Germany and France – had not delivered promised arms.

________

But while many countries have promised weapons to help bolster the Ukrainian arsenal, some have not kept up the supply.

Paul Grod, president of the Ukrainian World Congress, told the newspaper that some nations – including Germany and France – had not delivered promised arms.

Following the reports, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that further supplies of Strela missiles were on the way to Ukraine following delays.

"I can clearly say that further Strela deliveries are on the way," Baerbock told the Bundestag lower house of parliament.

"We are one of the biggest weapons suppliers in this situation, it doesn't make us proud but it's what we must do to help Ukraine," she added.

According to The Times, Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba has said the military only has a fortnight of anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles left.

Some countries have sent extra weapons in previous days, which he said has only “partially improved” the situation.

Ukrainian troops are also said to have resorted to using captured Russian “trophies”, such as vehicles and other equipment, to boost its own supplies and use against the invading force.

On 9 March, British defence secretary Ben Wallace told the House of Commons that the UK had delivered 3,615 anti-tank (NLAW) weapons and would soon supply a “small consignment” of Javelin anti-tank missiles.

The Ukrainian armed forces have put up a fierce defence of their country, which is said to have taken Putin by surprise.

Western intelligence officials believe Putin could be forced to resort to even more brutal tactics, including the use of chemical weapons. Western intelligence has suggested they may be opting to use more offensive tactics as the war goes on.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said on Thursday:
"We have seen indications that THE UKRANIANSs are going a bit more ON THE OFFENSE now.

"They have been defending
very smartly,
very nimbly,
very creatively in places that they believe are the right places to defend
and we have seen them now in places
particularly in the south, near Khersan,
they have tried to regain territory.

"Again we don't have great fidelity of tactical movements,
but we have seen them,
make these make these efforts."

AP news....

Its ruling in the Wisconsin case marks the first time this redistricting cycle that the high court has overturned maps drawn by a state.

Wisconsin Republicans had complained that Gov. Tony Evers’ maps moved too many people to increase the number of Assembly districts with a majority of Black and Hispanic voters from six to seven in violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in favor of adopting Evers’ maps earlier this month, with a conservative justice joining three liberals in the majority. Republicans immediately appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that the maps drawn by Evers were racially gerrymandered.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court failed to consider whether a “race-neutral alternative that did not add a seventh majority-black district would deny black voters equal political opportunity,” the Supreme Court said. The analysis done by the Wisconsin Supreme Court did not adhere to U.S. Supreme Court precedents “and its judgment cannot stand,” the nation’s high court said.

It might be a landmark case...

Europe will end its energy dependence on Russia but to do so from one day to the next would plunge it into a recession, risking hundreds of thousands of jobs and entire industrial sectors, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday.

In a budget speech to parliament, Scholz struck a more cautious tone on reducing Germany's energy dependence on Russia than some of his ministers, who have left open the possibility of energy sanctions - if only in theory at this stage.

"Yes, we will end this dependency - as soon as possible. But to do this from one day to the next would mean plunging our country and the whole of Europe into a recession," Scholz told the Bundestag lower house of parliament.

"Hundreds of thousands of jobs would be in danger. Whole branches of industry would be on the brink," he said. "Sanctions should not hurt European states harder than the Russian leadership."

Well Reverend...

I totally expect that Democrats will gerrymander till the cows come home and then complain that the other side is the ones doing it.

The GOP owns most of the State Legislators and things will turn out about even. Not that it matters much, considering the drubbing the Democrats are looking at taking in 2022 and the fact that their so called reliable voters (like Hispanics) are abandoning in droves.

Let's just say I am amused...

When "gerrymandering" benefits the Democrats, then it is just a game to win or lose. When it goes against Democrats they run screaming to the courts like 3 year olds who got their sucker taken from them.

So which is it for you Reverend?

Are you okay with gerrymandering as long as it favors Democrats? It is okay to be a little honest. For once?

Biden's risk-averse approach to Russia could create greater threat, experts say
SHANNON K. CRAWFORD
Wed, March 23, 2022, 2:10 AM·6 min read
President Joe Biden's high-stakes summit with other NATO leaders on Thursday will be one of the most scrutinized meetings on the world stage in decades, and could have enormous implications for both the war in Ukraine and the global balance of power.

Despite calls from Ukraine to do more to help stave off Russia's ruthless invasion, Biden has taken a cautious approach — wary of escalating the conflict by drawing in U.S. forces as part of a more direct NATO response. But after nearly a month of fighting, some foreign policy and national security experts ABC News spoke to say it may be time for the alliance to take on a more direct role.

Preparing for 'the worst case'

Since before the fighting broke out, Biden has insisted that American troops would not fight Russian forces inside Ukraine, warning that going head-to-head would lead to "a third world war."

But Barry Pavel, a former National Security Council senior official during the Bush and Obama administration and the senior vice president and director of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council, says that's far from inevitable.

"There have been other cases where U.S. and Russian forces have unfortunately come into friction and World War III didn't start," Pavel said, characterizing the strategy as simplistic. "There are hundreds of options that could be done between what NATO is doing now and risking World War III."

The greater threat, warns Pavel, might be in leaving Putin unchecked.

C.H. Truth said...

I wish that we could eliminate gerrymandering.... But each state can regulate elections...

So California is 65 - 35 Democrat to Republican overall.... if you look at the Biden win in 2020.

So out of 52 seats... fair would be 34 seats for Democrats and 18 seats for Republicans... according to several court rulings in other states (must be reflective of overall political demographics).

In California there are 43 Democrat leaning seats and only 7 Republican leaning seats (2 are considered neutral or competitive).

So in spite of having only 65% of the vote, they have 83% of the seats in their favor while the Republicans have only 13%.

If there was no Gerrymandering done, Roger.... your state alone would need to be more republican by a 20 seat swing.

New York is pretty much the same - that is about a 60-40 state and Democrats draw a map there that gives them 20 out of 26 seats (or 77% of the seats). They actually drew a map that swung them by 6 seats IN THEIR FAVOR! this election cycle.

That Roger....

is what Gerrymandering looks like.

It's not Pennsylvania where they tried to draw lines that literally didn't change anything... and Democrats went to court to get an extra seat.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Both sides tend to "gerrymander" as much as they can, Ch.

It's only when either side does it to so totally unacceptable and unconstitutional a degree that courts feel compelled to step in and reject maps that are obviously designed to negate the principle that ours should be a nation where everyone's vote has at least some chance to make a difference.

It's then that the screaming and running to the courts takes place, and both sides do that, too.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This might be the end of gerrymandering....ending it by both sides.

The Supreme Court’s latest “shadow docket” ruling—handed down yesterday in the midst of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings—is, at best, befuddling. At worst, it’s breathtaking in exposing the Court’s willingness to summarily sweep away a state court’s considered judgment.

In a twelve-page per curiam opinion (meaning no justice claimed authorship), a divided Court granted an emergency application for a stay of a Wisconsin state court’s decision regarding that state’s electoral maps. Last November, following the 2020 census results, the Republican-controlled Wisconsin legislature drew new electoral maps for both the seats in the state legislature and for congressional districts. Democratic Governor Terry Evers promptly vetoed the maps, describing them as “gerrymandering 2.0.” With the process stalled and the 2022 election drawing near, the Wisconsin Supreme Court agreed to step in, explicitly noting that its involvement would be limited because redistricting is usually supposed to be a matter for the political branches of government. The court invited the legislature and the governor, as well as other parties to the litigation, to submit their preferred electoral maps. On March 3, in a ruling that meticulously laid out its reasoning, the court selected the maps that Governor Evers proposed.
