ATLANTA — While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently relaxed its mask guidance for most counties, Pfizer is warning people that they should anticipate needing a fourth shot in the future.
The company is working to submit data to the FDA for a fourth dose after its CEO said its scientists found protection from the initial booster shot began to wane against omicron after three to four months.
The CDC already authorized some immune-compromised people to get a fourth shot back in the fall. But, there's no word yet when the FDA could authorize a fourth dose for healthy teens and adults.
Meanwhile, Pfizer is also working on a longer-lasting vaccine.
The CEO says the goal is to create something that "can protect you for at least a year."
"The protection we are getting from the third, it is good enough--actually quite good for hospitalizations and deaths--is not that good against infections, but doesn't last very long." Albert Bourla, Pfizer CEO, said.

For months we were told that you were an idiot for taking Ivermectin because it was a "horse de-wormer" and it would fucking kill you, but now we're supposed to get a FOURTH booster shot on the advice of Pfizer CEO Dr. Bourla who is a VETERINARIAN.

Russian Oligarchs Have No ‘Escape Hatch’ from Sanctions

South China Morning Post:
“Russia has lost up to 40 percent of the units it sent into Ukraine when Moscow invaded its neighbour in February, the Ukrainian military’s general staff said on Wednesday.
“The troops were either completely destroyed or have lost their combat capabilities, according to the daily bulletin, which did not give concrete numbers. The information could not be verified independently."

How Did Putin Miscalculate So Badly?
7:37 am EDT
Brian Klaas:
“Autocrats such as Putin eventually succumb to what may be called the ‘dictator trap.’
The strategies they use to stay in power tend to trigger their eventual downfall. Rather than being long-term planners, many make catastrophic short-term errors—the kinds of errors that would likely have been avoided in democratic systems.
“They hear only from sycophants, and get bad advice.
They misunderstand their population.
They don’t see threats coming until it’s too late.
And unlike elected leaders who leave office to riches, book tours, and the glitzy lifestyle of a statesman,
many dictators who miscalculate leave office in a casket,
a possibility that makes them even more likely to double down.”
Tom Friedman:
“I never had any illusions that once Putin launched this war, he’d stop short of doing anything to make sure that he could claim to be the ‘winner.’
Nevertheless, it is stunning to watch how quickly he has tied himself into knots.”
Best Peace Plan for Ukraine Is Sending Military Support
7:00 am
David Ignatius:
“Military support for Ukraine is the best peace plan, in other words. Already, Ukraine’s valiant defense has led Putin to soften his initial war demands.
A “peace process” is underway, involving would-be mediators from Israel, Germany, France and other nations.
Let’s hope this can produce a cease-fire before too long.
"But any real settlement will require Putin to change course — not just to save Ukraine, but to save Russia.
“Diplomats have been working overtime this past week to craft a formula for a neutral Ukraine on the model of Austria, whose security would be guaranteed by Germany, France, Russia, the United States and perhaps other nations.
This formula would reflect a major concession by Putin, but it could also diminish the heroic status of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Many Ukrainians would argue that their people didn’t fight and die to achieve neutrality.”
Why Putin’s Nuclear Threat Could Be More than Bluster
7:43 am
Anthony Faiola:
“The advent of tactical nuclear weapons — a term generally applied to lower-yield devices designed for battlefield use, which can have a fraction of the strength of the Hiroshima bomb — reduced their lethality, limiting the extent of absolute destruction and deadly radiation fields. That’s also made their use less unthinkable, raising the specter that the Russians could opt to use a smaller device without leveling an entire city. Detonate a one kiloton weapon on one side of Kyiv’s Zhuliany airport, for instance, and Russian President Vladimir Putin sends a next-level message with a fireball, shock waves and deadly radiation. But the blast radius wouldn’t reach the end of the runway.
“The Russians are thought to have roughly 2,000 such weapons — some so small as to be attached to torpedoes, depth charges, or even artillery shells and land mines. The world might reel in horror at nuclear deployment of any size. But, if boxed into the right kind of corner, some argue, Putin could use one in Ukraine without necessarily triggering World War III.”

Zelensky Meets the Moment
Dan Balz:
“In a matter of weeks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has become a beacon to the world, a wartime leader rallying his country, a symbol of courage in the face of personal danger, a politician who has shown anew the power of words and language.
“He was once a comedian who played a president on television, who then ran for office and became a president, who early in his tenure was subjected to attempted political extortion by then-President Donald Trump. Americans might have heard of him then but few others in the world knew his name. Now the 44-year-old Zelensky is instantly recognized, leading a sovereign country attacked without provocation.
“Though Zelensky has become a figure of worldwide admiration, he stands largely alone in the face of the deadly Russian onslaught — frustrated for his country as he struggles to persuade the West to do more than it has done to come to Ukraine’s defense.”
TIME TO HELP HIM MORE, AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN AS A LEADER AGAINST PUTIN, RATHER THAN A TOADY TO HIM.
Blinken Sets Conditions to Reverse Russian Sanctions
Secretary of State Antony Blinken told NPR “that U.S. sanctions against Russia are ‘not designed to be permanent,’ and that they could ‘go away’ if Russia should change its behavior.

Indy Voter was right about you, Dunning-Kruger alky -
Democrats proposing the Big Oil windfall tax, including Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Rep. Ro Khanna of California, cite Exxon Mobil’s profits to make their case. In 2021, they point out, Exxon’s profit jumped 60% over pre-pandemic levels. Gas prices during that time rose from $2.69 to $3.41. That means, by extension, that Exxon profits when oil and gas prices rise.
That’s generally true. What Whitehouse, Khanna et. al. don’t mention is that Exxon and other energy firms also suffer when oil and gas prices go down. In 2020, for instance, the sudden COVID pandemic caused such an oversupply of oil that the price briefly turned negative, meaning producers couldn’t sell their product and had to pay for storage. That didn’t last long, but low prices for most of 2020 wrought havoc in the industry, forcing cutbacks that persist to this day.
That oil oversupply was great for motorists. Gas prices fell to a low of $1.87 in 2020. But Exxon posted a gargantuan $22.4 billion loss, the largest in its history. That’s why Whitehouse and Khanna compare 2021 profits to pre-pandemic levels of 2019, two years earlier: using the normal year-over-year comparison would force them to acknowledge even greedy oil companies lose money when the market turns against them.
...
Then oil and gas from the U.S. fracking revolution began to flood the market, pushing oil prices—and Exxon’s numbers—down. By 2019, the last year before the COVID pandemic, Exxon’s revenue was 40% below the 2011 peak, and profit was 65% lower. Exxon’s stock became a dog, dropping 6% from 2011 through 2019. During the same time, the S&P 500 soared by 97%.
It wasn’t just Exxon. Beginning in 2015, many oil and gas firms suffered from unprofitable investments, as new supply slashed prices. In 2014, the average price of U.S. crude was $93 a barrel. That fell to $49 in 2015, with prices staying in that range until 2020, when they fell to $39. Giant firms like Exxon survived and recalibrated, but many others disappeared. In its “oil patch bankruptcy monitor report,” Texas law firm Haynes Boone documented more than 600 industry bankruptcies from 2015 through 2021, involving $321 in debt those companies defaulted on.
Investors fled. “A lot of investors became disenchanted with the oil and gas industry in terms of return on investment,” says Buddy Clark, co-chair of the energy practice at Haynes Boone. “There’s been a lack of reinvestment over the last six years. Producers and investors are not enthralled with throwing money away.” As a portion of the equities represented in the S&P 500 stock index, energy firms fell from 13.3% in 2008 to just 2.7% at the end of 2021 — the third lowest representation out of 11 sectors. Big Oil became a misnomer.
Those are the factors constraining domestic oil production today. High prices are luring some producers back. Research firm Baker Hughes counts 663 oil and gas rigs in operation as of March 11 — 261 more than the same point last year. But that’s still far below the recent peak of 2,031 rigs in 2008. Even with prices near $100 per barrel, many firms are reluctant to drill because more supply could bring prices crashing down again.
“If somebody would guarantee that prices would stay high for a long time, everybody would run out and do it,” says Clark. “But the public equity markets are screaming at producers to not outspend their cash flow, and return money to shareholders through dividends.”

Zelensky’s address — made from a nondescript room next to a Ukrainian flag — was direct and to-the-point.
For the first half, he spoke in Ukrainian and his speech was overlaid by a translator. He spoke of “the worst war since World War Two” unfolding in his country, and the dreams of his citizens being blown apart “just like the same dreams you, Americans, have — just like anyone in the United States.” His turns of phrase were very American: Russia “attacked not just us; they went on a brutal offensive against our values,” he said; Ukrainians just want to be able to “preserve our democracy”. He invoked Mount Rushmore, “the faces of those who laid the foundations of the United States of America” and the country they envisioned, adding: “We in Ukraine want the same.” He also deliberately echoed Martin Luther King Jr’s famous civil rights speech: “I have a dream. Those words are known to each of you, and today I say to you: I have a need.”
Then came the specific requests. “Is it too much to ask for to create a no-fly zone over Ukraine?” Because the past three weeks have made it clear such action is “too much to ask,” he immediately followed up with: “If this is too much to ask, we have alternatives. You know what kind of defense systems we need… the ability to use aircraft, powerful, strong aviation. Aircraft that can help Ukraine, that can help Europe. You know that they exist and you have them, but they are on the earth rather than in our skies.” This presumably refers to the American aircraft Poland recently offered to transfer to an air base for Ukrainians to make use of, which the US blanched at. It was considered that American planes flying in Ukrainian skies in direct conflict with Russian aircraft would be too provocative.
Zelensky also asked for anything that “allows us to pressure Russia economically.” “I call on you to do more,” he implored. “New packages of sanctions are needed. Restrictions are needed for everyone on whom this unjust regime is based… All America’s companies must leave the Russian markets immediately because it is flooded with our blood… I’m asking to make sure the Russians do not receive a single penny to use to destroy people in Ukraine. Peace is more important than income.”
Zelensky also suggested a new, NATO-style alliance called U24, suggesting that it could comprise “responsible countries” who would support each other financially, militaristically and in terms of humanitarian aid. He spoke of how such a group might have helped, for instance, develop a faster Covid vaccine. News had broken earlier in the day that Zelensky suggested in talks with Putin that Ukraine would never join NATO. This seemed to suggest he was effectively creating a loophole for himself and suggesting a NATO clone elsewhere.
PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO
After speaking for 15 minutes, Zelensky asked Congress to “please watch this video” and aired a slickly made and highly disturbing video of the situation inside Ukraine. It opened with beautiful vistas of Ukrainian cities pre-war, with children cavorting in playgrounds and young couples walking along architecturally impressive streets and through sunny parks. The imagery then changed, with the same apartment blocks in the background of shiny PR shots turning to neighborhoods being bombed by missiles. Abandoned strollers, empty babies’ shoes, dead bodies on the sides of roads and in ditches, a fatally wounded pregnant woman being carried out of a bombed maternity hospital on a stretcher, burned and injured children, and crying parents flashed onscreen. It was extremely difficult to watch, and many filing out of the room after the address were visibly moved by what they had seen. The video ended with text that implored viewers: “Close the sky over Ukraine”.
For the final section of his speech, post-video, Zelensky spoke in English without the aid of a translator. “I am addressing President Biden,” he said, imploring Biden to take further action. “You are the leader of the nation. I wish you could be the leader of the world.”
At the end of the speech, a number of members of Congress addressed waiting cameras and talked about how Ukraine had become a “bipartisan issue, not a Republican or a Democrat issue”. Though most spoke of working together, one Republican mentioned snidely that we couldn’t “wait any longer” for Biden to act while he worried about upsetting Vladimir Putin, which isn’t altogether fair:
The supersized bipartisan package of $13.6 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine was given final approval by the Senate five days ago, and US-led sanctions have left Russia on the brink of economic collapse.
The question now is what more the US can do short of full-scale war. One Senator spoke of Putin being “Hitler in our lifetimes”; another said simply that “They need to kill more Russians.” More killing clearly isn’t a lasting solution to the Ukrainian situation, though. As Zelensky returns to the negotiating table with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov this week, one can only hope that the ideas being floated — a neutral Kyiv, further humanitarian corridors, “security guarantees” — become concrete solutions quickly. Zelensky’s description of these latest negotiations sounding “more realistic” gives hope. One thing is for certain: Few who were in the room today will forget the video the Ukrainian president aired and the plea that went ignored.
