The Russian economy is headed for collapse

The Conversation

March 11, 2022

To justify invading Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has painted Russia as a hegemonic power re-asserting its rightful claim to imperial greatness. Yet even before the invasion, Russia’s economic capabilities were hardly capable of sustaining an empire.

Now, with foreign sanctions presiding over a plummeting Russian ruble, Russia’s economic standing has fallen further still. If measured at today’s exchange rates, Russia’s economy would be the 22nd largest in the world, with a gross domestic product (GDP) not much larger than the state of Ohio’s.

With foreign sanctions presiding over a plummeting Russian ruble, Russia’s economic standing continues to fall.

That’s a far cry from the past, when Russia was a true world power. According to data assembled by the late economic historian Angus Maddison, it was the fifth largest economy in the world in 1913, behind the United States, China, Germany and Britain. By 1957, when the U.S.S.R. outpaced the United States to launch the first satellite into space, the Soviet economy was the world’s second largest after America’s.

I think that President Biden is doing incredibly well, considering the situation is the most important since 1941!

Perfect. ??? But

You have broken away somewhat from MAGA.

The MAGAverse is isolated… even in the GOP

At least for the moment, the pro-Putin (and anti-anti-Putin) right finds itself isolated not merely from the mainstream of the GOP, but from the conservative base as well.

The NYT reports that “the bulk of the Republican Party [is trying] to get on the right side of history amid a brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine. Republicans are among the most vociferous champions for the United States to amp up its military response, and are competing to issue the strongest expressions of solidarity with Ukraine’s leaders.”

And my friend Mindy Finn passes along the fascinating results of a new survey by Citizen Data:

In the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine, there’s a clear opportunity for Americans to find consensus, transcend political polarization, and unite as a country against a common adversary.

Americans overwhelmingly view the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a broader fight for global democracy, rather than solely a regional dispute. Almost eight out of ten (78%) see it partly, if not entirely, as a fight for global democracy.

Support for Ukraine transcends political divides. Statements made by President Biden, President Zelensky, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senator Mitt Romney were strongly supported by respondents on both sides of the aisle.

Meanwhile, statements from political figures such as former President Trump, radio talk show host Charlie Kirk, and FOX News host Tucker Carlson seeking to excuse or explain Putin’s behavior were overwhelmingly rejected based on a blind test where statements were anonymized.

Americans are united in advocating for more severe action toward Russia moving forward. Almost three quarters (74%) of Americans believe the U.S. has not acted severely enough in response to the Russian invasion.

Exit take: We don’t know how long this will last, or whether this will affect DJT’s standing in the GOP (probably not). But it was notable that House Leader Kevin McCarthy yesterday felt that it was necessary to say, “I do not think anything’s savvy or genius about Putin,” when he was asked about Trump’s comments. “I think Putin is evil. He’s a dictator. And I think he’s murdering people right now.”

Maybe McCarthy is starting to worry about how this is playing out. It is likely that he’s looking at new polling that suggests Trump’s bromance with Putin could hurt Republicans this fall, and deny McCarthy the speakership.

The one thing we know for sure is that his comments were not an act of political courage… because he’s Kevin McCarthy. So it’s a tell.

Every poll shows Republicans are wanting Biden and the United States to do more than Democrats are. Republicans are more willing to push for a no-fly Zone or take more tangible action against Russia than Democrats are.

Democrats are actually tied to defending the less than aggressive stance of our President, whereas Republicans are much more willing to say that Biden is not doing enough.

But somehow the left if trying to push nonsense that the "right" is pro-Russia and anti-Ukraine.

“It was fair, last week, to question whether Republicans in Congress would condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, because the party’s de facto leader was praising Vladimir Putin’s aggression as ‘genius’ and ‘wonderful.’ Yet instead of falling in line behind Donald Trump, most congressional Republicans have denounced Putin just as loudly as Democrats have.”

“This fact would not have been surprising just a few years ago. But it’s one of the more meaningful distinctions that rank-and-file members of the party have drawn recently between themselves and the former president, a man with an almost preternatural ability to turn anyone who questions him into a political pariah. At least temporarily, the war in Ukraine has established a cease-fire between America’s ever-dueling parties, and lowered the temperature on Capitol Hill by a few degrees. Many Republicans seem relieved, both for the reprieve and for THE CHANCE TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES A BIT FROM TRUMP. The break probably won’t last long.”

REPLY TO CH'S THREAD ARTICLE:

Biden calls for suspending normal trade relations with Russia

(CNN)President Joe Biden on Friday called for suspending normal trade relations with Russia and said the US would ban imports of seafood, vodka and diamonds from the nation as part of an effort to ramp up economic pressure on Russia for invading Ukraine.

Biden said the US, along with the G7 and European Union, will call for revoking "most favored nation" status for Russia, referred to as permanent normal trade relations in the US.

The status means two nations have agreed to trade under the best possible terms, which can include lower tariffs, fewer barriers to trade and high imports, Biden said.

The move requires approval from Congress and legislation is expected to be introduced following Biden's announcement.

"Revoking PNTR for Russia is going to make it harder for Russia to do business with the United States and doing it in unison with other nations that make up half of the global economy will be another crushing blow to the Russian economy that's already suffering very badly from our sanctions," Biden said.

The President said, "Many issues divide us in Washington, but standing for democracy in Ukraine, pushing Russia's aggression should not be one of those issues. The free world is coming together to confront Putin."

The President also thanked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for being a "strong advocate" on this issue and for holding off on the legislation in the House of Representatives "until I could line up all of our key allies to keep us in complete unison."

Biden announced the US would ban goods from several signature sectors of Russia's economy, including seafood, vodka and non-industrial diamonds. The White House says this will deny Russia more than $1 billion in export revenues.

The President will also sign an executive order ending the exportation of luxury items -- including spirits, tobacco, clothing, jewelry, cars and antiques -- to Russia.

A White House official told CNN the goal is to continue hurting Russian oligarchs and the country's wealthiest people by depriving them of their creature comforts, as the US continues to try to put pressure around those close to Putin. It is also aimed at removing ways for these oligarchs to shelter their money, as they are already increasingly closed off from traditional financial avenues, the official said.

The US imported 48,867 metric tons of seafood from Russia in 2021, worth about $1.2 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Crab accounted for the largest portion of those imports, with the US buying more than $900 million worth of frozen snow and red king crab last year. The US does not sell any seafood directly to Russia, as the country banned US exports of seafood and fish in 2014.

Imports of Russian vodka to the United States accounted for only 1.3% of total vodka imports in in 2021, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. The total amounts to $18.5 million dollars in 2021, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said.

The President also announced G7 leaders would seek to deny Russia the ability from borrowing from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

"We're going to continue to squeeze Putin," Biden said, adding that "Putin must pay the price," for launching an unprovoked attack on Ukraine.

"The G7 is also stepping up pressure on corrupt Russian billionaires — we're adding new names to the list of oligarchs and their families that we're targeting and we're increasing coordination among the G7 countries to target and capture their ill begotten gains. They support Putin. They steal from the Russian people and they seek to hide their money in our countries," Biden said.

CNN reported Thursday that bipartisan talks in the Senate had been taking shape to take more aggressive action on Russia's trade status -- after the White House effectively watered down the House-passed bill banning importing Russian oil, natural gas and coal into the US.

The earlier version of the legislation had included a provision that would suspend permanent normal trade relations for Russia and Belarus. But the White House expressed concerns over that part of the bill, and ultimately it was excised. The bill banning Russian energy imports that passed the House Wednesday night instead simply called for a review of Russia's status in the World Trade Organization.

Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden, a Democrat of Oregon, told CNN that he was engaging in talks with the top tax writers in Congress and the Biden administration about the matter, as pressure grew to include tougher language in the House bill when the Senate takes it up -- as soon as next week.

"I believe the Russians -- the inhumane behavior of Russia does not justify it to get the fruits of the international community," Wyden told CNN.

Sen. Mike Crapo, an Idaho Republican and the ranking Republican on the Finance Committee, said he probably wouldn't support the House bill without stronger language on its trade status -- and made clear there would be an effort to amend it.

"The question is PNTR, which is absent. And then they had some other stuff on the WTO in there, which is kind of hollow if we don't do PNTR," Crapo said earlier in the day. "So, I probably would not support it because it doesn't have the key things that you need for a proper trade response."

This story has been updated with additional details Thursday.

I am not sure I understand your logic, Reverend. I promise you that none of those 250 million Americans who are on that same side want us to secure "less" sanctions or do "more" trading. Those 250 million Americans want more actions ON TOP OF what is happening.

Not sure why this is so hard to understand for you.

Perhaps it is simply because you were literally against EVERYTHING Trump did regardless of the situation, whereas people like me can be on the same side of things when those things are obvious. The War in Ukraine has Exposed the Perils of 21st Century Globalism

By Steve McCann

The unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine has exposed the folly, peril, and incoherence of 21st Century Globalism.  Unlike the economic globalism of the 19th and early 20th centuries that focused on the concept of free trade of goods for goods, this iteration can be characterized by allegiance to irrational environmentalism and the creation of elitist global institutions determined to mold mankind and impose regimentation on countries and their populations to ostensibly “save the planet.”

The operational underpinning of 21st Century Globalism is the extortion and intimidation of nations throughout the planet to acquiesce to radical “green” policies whose true objective is not to “save the planet” but the elimination of national identity and de facto global governance by unaccountable institutions.

The populations of many countries (such as the United States and much of Europe) have accordingly been coerced into altering their traditional national lifestyles and have marginalized their manufacturing and energy bases by voluntarily becoming reliant on other nations for basic goods and energy.

The Ukraine War has revealed the insanity of naïve voluntary dependence on manufactured products and/or natural resources from despotic countries, such as Russia, Iran, and China, who are jointly and clandestinely setting up their own version of autocratic globalism.

Zelensky says Ukraine has 'reached a strategic turning point' in its fight against Russia
Yahoo News

Vladimir Zelinsky on Friday urged the people of his nation to be patient as they continue to defend their country against Russia's military invasion, which has now entered its 16th day.

"I know that many people have started to feel tired. I understand. Impatient. I understand," Zelensky said in a video posted online.
"This is life. When we mobilize, when we see our victories and the loss of the enemy on the battlefield, we expect the struggle to end sooner. We expect the invaders to fall faster. But this is life, this is war. This is a struggle. Time is still needed. Patience is still needed."

A defiant Zelensky insisted Ukraine will prevail despite reports of Russian forces striking near airports in the western part of Ukraine for the first time while its troops were attempting to encircle the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

"It is impossible to say for how many more days we must liberate our Ukrainian land. But it is possible to say we will do it," Zelensky said, according to an English translation of his remarks by Ukraine's U.N. mission. "Because we have already reached a strategic turning point. We are already moving toward our goal, toward our victory."

"This is a patriotic war against an obstinate enemy which doesn't pay attention to thousands of their own soldiers dead," he added.

Zelensky's comments came as Russian forces continued their siege on Mariupol, where civilians have now been without water, electricity and heat for more than a week.

"This is a humanitarian catastrophe," Zelensky said. "Humanitarian catastrophe — two words that have become fully synonymous with the other two words: the Russian Federation."

On Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said a Russian airstrike had destroyed a children's hospital and maternity ward in the city.

The attack was widely condemned by world leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who said the U.S. would work with its allies to investigate Russia for possible war crimes.

President Biden spoke with Zelensky on Friday morning before announcing new U.S. sanctions against Russia, including a ban imports of Russian alcohol, seafood and diamonds.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Friday that Russian forces invading Ukraine have killed more Ukrainian civilians than soldiers.

At least 549 Ukrainian civilians, including 41 children, have been killed, according to the United Nations. But the agency believes the actual death toll is likely much higher.

According to the U.N., more than 2.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine since Feb. 24, when Russia's invasion began.

Zelensky implored those who have stayed to "hold on."

"Be sure to fight. Be sure to give all your strength," he said. "It will not be easy with such a neighbor. But with us, it will not be easy too."

Trump touts ‘violent letter’ endorsing Michigan Republican -- and notes his vow to ‘lock up’ state's AG

Julia Forrest, Michigan Advance

March 11, 2022

A number of Michigan Republicans gathered at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida this week for a fundraising event for Kalamazoo lawyer and Republican attorney general candidate Matthew DePerno.

Those in attendance included three Republican candidates vying for the Republican gubernatorial nomination: Perry Johnson, Ryan Kelley and Ralph Rebandt. Two candidates running for U.S. House seats were also in attendance: state Rep. Steve Carra (R-Three Rivers) and Josh Bitterman. A GOP candidate for secretary of state, Kristina Karamo, was also in attendance.

Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock also was there, calling on candidates to join Trump on stage, as can be heard in a video of the event posted to Facebook.

The video begins with DePerno praising Trump before the former president made his remarks. DePerno also highlighted that if elected he will help “restore Michigan back to a constitutional republic.”

“We are fighting for our country, we will take it back,” DePerno said. “We are fighting for the nation right now and for the state of Michigan, and we will take it back. So I have this great honor tonight of introducing to you the greatest president in modern history, the 45th president, and I hope the 47. President Donald Trump.”

Trump opened his remarks by discussing DePerno’s comments that if elected, he would prosecute Attorney General Dana Nessel for referring the fraudulent Michigan Trump electors — which includes Maddock — to the Department of Justice for investigation. Trump said it was “a hell of a statement.” In response, the crowd yelled, “Lock her up.”

Increases in the indexes for gasoline, shelter, and food were the largest
contributors to the seasonally adjusted all items increase. The gasoline index
rose 6.6 percent in February and accounted for almost a third of the all items
monthly increase; other energy component indexes were mixed. The food index rose
1.0 percent as the food at home index rose 1.4 percent; both were the largest
monthly increases since April 2020.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.5 percent in February
following a 0.6-percent increase the prior month. The shelter index was by far
the biggest factor in the increase, with a broad set of indexes also
contributing, including those for recreation, household furnishings and
operations, motor vehicle insurance, personal care, and airline fares.

The all items index rose 7.9 percent for the 12 months ending February. The
12-month increase has been steadily rising and is now the largest since the
period ending January 1982. The all items less food and energy index rose 6.4
percent, the largest 12-month change since the period ending August 1982. The
energy index rose 25.6 percent over the last year, and the food index increased
7.9 percent, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending July 1981.

Trump Didn’t Know Where U.S. Troops Were Deployed
March 11, 2022 at 3:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

“At an Oval Office meeting with then-Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko in 2017, Donald Trump asked his national security adviser if U.S. troops were in Donbas, territory claimed by Russian-backed separatists,” The Guardian reports.

Writes then U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, in her new book: “An affirmative answer to that question would have meant that the United States was in a shooting war with Russia.”

She added:
“I pondered whether it was better to interpret Trump’s question as suggesting that the commander-in-chief thought it possible that US troops were fighting Russia-led forces, or instead as an indicator that the president wasn’t clear which country was on the other side of the war against Ukraine. Either way, it was disconcerting that he did not seem to know where we had our troops – his troops – deployed. I could only imagine what the Ukrainians were thinking.”

Putin has also done something no US president has been able to do in decades: rally Europe around NATO, get NATO countries to re-arm (finally), and give them a new and pointed mission: the deterrence of Russia. And Putin’s blunder has revealed, in fact, that the West has a unique new weapon in the history of global warfare that can end wars almost before they begin: an economic kill-switch. The vast and complex set of financial, economic, and travel sanctions that the West unveiled this past fortnight and is imposing on Russia — effectively removing it from international banking and most international trade — is something no country can survive for very long.

Funny how our trump slurpers all follow the leader by believing the same bullshit that Putin uses for his propaganda.....seems to me none of them are smart enough to see the similarities in the tactics that both use to gain fealty of their disciples....Look at the big lie and Putin telling the world the US has bio labs in Ukraine as an excuse to his people......sadly they believe him because the is a complete blackout of outside news....Why are trump slurpers so naive and easily manipulated by the show man trump??????

Now China is using some sort of market economy, similarly Vietnam is doing same. North Korea has even peculiar system, although it still practice state controlled socialist economy but its political system is similar to Monarchy. Succession of leaders has been handed down from father to son. Now third generation of Kim dynasty is ruling North Korea. Now Cuba has been slowly moving into direction of market economy practiced by China.

Oh look.

Char-Lee the Tran-Nee must've bought the alky a brand new Turbo Salad Spinner.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has said in the past that he would still vote for Donald Trump if he's the GOP's nominee in 2024 -- but he also told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday that he will get involved in the Republican primary to derail his attempt at the nomination.

During a lengthy interview, Tapper pointed to Barr's conclusion in his recently released book, "One Damn Thing After Another," that the GOP would be best served by moving on from Trump in 2024.

"If Trump runs, would you get involved in the primary fight to defeat him?" Tapper asked him.

"Absolutely," Barr said

Putin’s Challenge To The American Right
4:44 pm EST
Andrew Sullivan:
“It would perhaps be too glorious an irony if it were Vladimir Putin who finally buzz-killed the American and European right’s infatuation with post-liberalism.

“But, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine staggers shambolically and criminally forward, it’s no longer unthinkable. The icon of the West’s new right [DONALD TRUMP] is in serious trouble now — and it might tarnish all of those who only yesterday were idolizing his reactionary zeal.”

If shutting down Russia's pipeline will hurt their economy, why won't shutting down ours hurt our economy?

I did my test drive yesterday @ bellevue Porsche with a salesman from Berlin. He was literally yelling at me for not giving it enough gas and shifting too early. He had me going around a cloverleaf at about 50-60 (25 mph zone) and was yelling at me to give it gas the whole time. I thought I was going to fly off the road. When we straighten out to the on ramp, I shifted into 3rd gear at around 5000 RPMs and he yell at me that I wasted about 1000. I looked down.... I was going over 80 and was not on the highway yet. But I had to get it to 5th of the 6 gears... not even sure how fast I was going when I downshifted and got somewhere back in the general vicinity of the speed limit.

I was probably in danger of being pulled over for reckless driving.

It was awesome!

I bought the car!

Nice. I'm glad you and she are happy. My Tundra is the best truck I've ever owned and I've owned several. UAW clapped-together shitboxes all, before the Tundra. Put 1000+ miles on it this week all over New England and the fucker runs like new @ 108,000 miles. You'll get tired of that truck before you wear it out.

You were wise to drive it like you did. 911's are notorious for the ass end swinging out without warning, and the biggest mistake new owners make when that happens is they hit the brakes instead of the GAS. If it starts to swing out on you mash the throttle. You'll stay out of the ditch.

I had an uncle who was a 911/912 collector and so I got a chance to drive a few. He taught me how to handle it, and one you learn there's no way in the world to have more fun with your clothes on than driving the snot out of a 911.

And verify the IMS or prepare to have it done. It's short money to fix it compared to the major rebuild if you don't and you grenade the fucker.

You have that right my ex boss put his in the trees, 3 weeks after buying, when he tried to open it up in a neighborhood under construction out in Johns Creek.

He went MI to buy it and thought driving back in the interstates made him an expert. I drove it a few times fun as shit.

He traded it in a few years later for a Sea foam Green Mercedes convertible. I asked if his panties matched the color.

It’s the maintenance costs on those German cars that kill me.

Sounds a lot like driving on ice... same thing. Hit the gas, not the brakes, if you start to slide. People always panic and hit the brakes!

As I stated in my email... the IMS bearing situation will be monitored on this baby and I probably will get it replaced with the ceramic when I have to update the clutch. But for now, I think I am safe!

Good on ya, CH. Yeah, my email and that comment passed each other like two ships in the night. You should be fine. See if there's a Skip Barber or Bondurant school in your area to help you get the most out of that ride. I've been thinking about doing the Barber school at Lime Rock with my Mustang. Could be a hoot.

And cali you are right about German cars being serious buck$ to own. My one stint owning a MB taught me that. Service "A" wasn't too terrible, but Service "B" would blow a respectable size whole in your wallet. Still, MB's are over engineered as hell and it's the closest you can come to driving a fucking bank vault down the road. Safest car I ever owned.

I think I'll go Lexus next time. Kraut luxury with Jap quality and reliability.

Anything but fucking UAW junk.
