While Democrats face challenges in the midterm elections, this is the first of two columns breaking ranks with many in the commentariat class by suggesting the real possibility of a President Biden comeback, which is worthy of serious discussion today.

Readers might do a search for “Joe Biden,” “2020 Iowa caucus” and “2020 New Hampshire primary,” where words such as “humiliating” and “disaster” were widely used — and his candidacy for president was pronounced dead and buried by almost all political analysts.

Then do a search for “Biden South Carolina primary.”

You get the idea.

Today we will emphasize the health care and personal safety issue of COVID-19, where Biden has been an outstanding leader and manager, and the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, where Biden has been a far superior commander in chief than his predecessor, President Trump, and his wartime nemesis, Russian despot and strongman Vladimir Putin.

When Biden became president in January 2021, America was finishing one of the most horrible months in the history of COVID-19 with more 95,000 Americans dead that month. He assembled a first-rate team of medical experts, heeded their advice, organized and managed the attack against the deadly disease, and passed major economic legislation that avoided a depression and created record-setting numbers of high paying jobs.

A riveting and powerful television ad should be produced dramatizing these achievements of Biden and Democrats in Congress, AND what they will accomplish next!

Equally dramatically with democracy under attack around the world, Biden has been a compelling leader of the free world, the exact opposite of Trump, and a far superior commander in chief than Putin, whose invasion of Ukraine has been a disaster for Russia.

While Trump divided, criticized, and ripped apart the NATO alliance, Biden unified, strengthened and lifted the alliance of democracies historically and profoundly.

While Putin criminally invaded Ukraine, committed war crimes and genocide and crimes against humanity that were epic and sickening, and thought he could exploit NATO divisions, and Trump at that time praised Putin, Biden brought the alliance together. He organized powerful and effective sanctions against Russia and mobilized an armada of weapons for Ukraine from allied nations that stand rock-solid together for Ukraine and democracy!

In February, on the eve of the Russian invasion, I wrote a column suggesting that Biden, NATO and Ukraine can defeat Putin. With the powerful management of Biden and NATO leaders, and the courageous and brilliant leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and all Ukranians, that outcome is now very possible, which few suggested when the war began.

With democracy under attack, the forces of democracy won a huge victory in the French presidential election with the reelection of President Emmanuel Macron, and defeat of Putin ally and Trump admirer Marine Le Pen.

On COVID-19 and Ukraine Biden has demonstrated sound judgment, strong leadership, good management, and important results for which he deserves great credit.

In the near future I will write part two of this column involving economic and domestic issues.

For now, two points. First, Biden and Democrats are competing against Republicans whose Senate and House leaders are among the most unpopular politicians in America, and are spending much time now publicly discussing their stated contempt for Trump. Trump is dodging subpoenas, court orders and investigations while he still, incredibly, seeks to overturn the 2020 presidential election today.

Second, there is a chance that Democrats can gain Senate seats, because of Trump’s interventions and some good Democratic candidates, and could maintain control of the House.

Democrats will pass some new economic initiatives before the midterms. Biden will execute some important executive orders. Biden and Democrats have a strong case to take to an American people facing economic trouble and seeking economic solutions that Democrats offer and Republicans obstruct.

The Democratic rally cry is appealing and true. Keep us in control of the House! Give us just one more Democratic senator! And here is how we lift your lives, from California to Florida to Ohio and, you bet, West Virginia!

Biden made a comeback during the primary by sitting back, hiding out, and letting America get to know the rest of the boneheads that you Democrats put up for President. I mean Kamala Harris? Pete Buttigieg? Bernie "Crazy Hair" Sanders? They let themselves be known to the American public and were soundly rejected. Biden was thought of as a known commodity because he had been a Senator for decade and the VP under Obama.

But now Americans actually have seen Joe Biden in action (or inaction or in crazy actions). We have witnessed his failures first hand.

Look it's one thing to fall to fourth place in Iowa because you really didn't do much campaigning and nobody was excited by you. It's another to lead the entire nation into the total clusterfuck we see today.

You can recover from not being noticed... all it took was for others to drop out of the race and their supporters to look for a safe bet.

You cannot recover so easily from your own failures.

RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT

The Kremlin helped make Dmytro Firtash rich. Now he's denouncing Putin.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, billionaire Dmytro Firtash said the Russian president cannot win in Ukraine: “He is never going to come out victorious.”

A Ukrainian oligarch who made his fortune with help from the Kremlin is now denouncing Vladimir Putin, even as he fights extradition to the U.S. on corruption charges.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News while under house arrest in Austria, billionaire Dmytro Firtash said the Russian president cannot win in Ukraine.

“He is never going to come out victorious,” said Firtash, who became fabulously rich selling Russian natural gas to Ukraine with the help of powerful Russian interests. “No matter what happens, Russia will lose.”

If he could, Firtash said he would tell Putin: “It’s time to stop. There will be no victory. The longer this war takes, the worse it will be for the Russian people. Not just for the Ukrainian people.”

Firtash’s comments came after the Russian banking tycoon Oleg Tinkov last week denounced what he called Moscow’s “massacre” in Ukraine and urged the West to help end “this insane war.” Other oligarchs, including Oleg Deripaska, have called for an end to the war without directly criticizing Putin.

Critics will note that Firtash’s break with Moscow may align with his current interests, given that the U.S. Justice Department is trying to extradite him to face charges of a conspiracy to pay bribes in India while seeking a deal to supply specialized metal for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.

Video shows security, motorcade at Firtash villa

From a snow-white office adorned with a map of Eastern Europe and Russia and a painting of his home village, Firtash suggested that he has often placed his business interests above his personal views.

“I was never pro-Russian,” he said. “But you have to understand that I am a businessman. And my goal is to earn money. That’s my job.”

Asked if he worried he was risking his life by speaking against Putin now, he answered: “It’s hard to say. But my understanding of this is simple. I don’t really have a choice. ... To believe that in 2022, in the center of Europe, that such a massacre can be taking place, no normal person could believe it."

A former U.S. official familiar with Firtash said: “Firtash knows that the influence of his Kremlin handlers has been substantially reduced in Austria, who have been able to slow and thus far prevent his extradition to the U.S., so he’s trying to find other patrons. But I doubt anyone in Ukraine will be willing to save him."

John Herbst, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, said he found Firtash’s comments “a little risky for him.”

“It’s a clear play not just for (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy’s support but for the United States,” said Herbst, who described Firtash as a “pragmatic and self-interested man.”

“Whether it helps him, that’s highly unlikely.”

Warmonger Vladimir Putin has sparked more rumours about his failing health as footage seemed to show him suffering hand and leg tremors in a recent meeting.

In the video released over the weekend the tyrant is seen holding one hand to his chest while the other is in a fist, fuelling concerns he may have Parkinson’s.

Later in the footage the 69-year-old greets Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and seems unsteady on his feet while his thumb seems to suffer a spasm.

Visegrad24, which first published the footage online, said it was “probably the clearest video of something being wrong with Putin’s health”, according to the Daily Express.

Reacting to the latest video, Emily Deans, a medical doctor and psychiatrist in Massachusetts, described it “the most abnormal video yet”.

Rory Cellan-Jones, the BBC ’s former technology correspondent, who announced in 2019 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s himself, also said he believed it to be symptomatic of the disease.

Russia halts gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria

April 27, 2022, 12:31 AM PDT / Updated April 27, 2022, 9:25 AM PDT

By NBC News

Russia has cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, both members of the European Union and NATO, intensifying its confrontation with Ukraine's allies in a move the continent's leaders labeled “gas blackmail.”

Russia’s state-controlled natural gas giant Gazprom said early Wednesday it had suspended gas supplies to the two countries after they refused to pay for the shipments in rubles.

The move marked an escalation of the Kremlin's efforts to weaken the resolve of those supporting Ukraine's defensive stand with sanctions and military support. Europe is heavily reliant on Russian energy supplies and the halt ratcheted up the economic stakes in a standoff that is increasingly resembling the Cold War.

Your old hometown is still struggling 😪

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minneapolis Police Department has engaged in a pattern of race discrimination for at least a decade, including stopping and arresting Black people at a higher rate than white people, using force more often on people of color and maintaining a culture where racist language is tolerated, a state investigation launched after George Floyd’s killing found.

The report released Wednesday by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights following a nearly two-year investigation said the agency and the city would negotiate a court-enforceable agreement to address the long list of problems identified in the report, with input from residents, officers, city staff and others.

The report said police department data “demonstrates significant racial disparities with respect to officers’ use of force, traffic stops, searches, citations, and arrests.” And it said officers “used covert social media to surveil Black individuals and Black organizations, unrelated to criminal activity, and maintain an organizational culture where some officers and supervisors use racist, misogynistic, and disrespectful language with impunity.”

Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero said during a news conference after the report was released that it doesn’t single out any officers or city leaders.

“This investigation is not about one individual or one incident,” Lucero said.

Asked how long the agreement with the city, known as a consent decree, might have to remain in force, Lucero said, “As long as it takes to do it right.”

The report said the city and police department “do not need to wait to institute immediate changes to begin to address the causes of discrimination that weaken the City’s public safety system and harm community members.” It listed several steps that the city can take now, including implementing stronger internal oversight to hold officers accountable for their conduct, better training, and better communication with the public about critical incidents such as officer-involved shootings.

National civil rights attorney Ben Crump and his partners, who won a $27 million settlement from the city for the Floyd family, called the report “historic” and “monumental in its importance.” They said they were “grateful and deeply hopeful” that change is imminent.

“We call on city, state, and Police leaders to accept the challenge of these findings and make meaningful change at last to create trust between communities of color in Minneapolis and those who are sworn to protect and serve them,” the lawyers said in a statement.

Messages to Mayor Jacob Frey and the police department seeking comment on the report weren’t immediately returned. Lucero said the city got its first look at the report Wednesday morning.

The Department of Human Rights launched its investigation barely a week after Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020. Then-Officer Derek Chauvin used his knee to pin the Black man to the pavement for 9 1/2 minutes in a case that sparked protests around the world against police racism and brutality. Chauvin, who is white, was convicted last spring of murder. Three other fired officers — Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng — were convicted this year of violating Floyd’s civil rights in a federal trial and they face a state trial starting in June.

State investigators reviewed a decade’s worth of information, including data on traffic stops, searches, arrests and uses of force, and examined policies and training. The review included around 700 hours of body camera video and nearly 480,000 pages of city and police department documents. Lucero said investigators interviewed officers throughout the department and “overwhelmingly, we found officers being very forthcoming.” The investigators also invited citizens to submit their own stories of encounters with Minneapolis police.

The Minnesota Department of Human Rights is the state’s civil rights enforcement agency. Its duties include enforcing the Minnesota Human Rights Act which, among other things, makes it illegal for a police department to discriminate against someone because of their race.

“Race-based policing is unlawful and especially harms people of color and Indigenous individuals — sometimes costing community members their lives,” the report said.

The department has come under pressure from multiple directions since Floyd’s death. The U.S. Department of Justice is also investigating Minneapolis policing practices, though it is not thought to be close to a conclusion.

Several City Council members and residents have pushed to replace the department with a new public safety unit that they argue could take a more comprehensive public health approach to policing, including dropping a required minimum number of police officers. Voters rejected the idea last year.

Mayor Jacob Frey and Chief Medaria Arradondo, before his retirement in January, also made a range of changes in department policies and practices, including requiring officers to document their attempts to de-escalate situations, and no longer stopping motorists for minor traffic violations.

But community anger at police flared anew in February when police officers serving a no-knock warrant shot and killed Amir Locke, a 22-year-old Black man who was staying on a couch in his cousin’s apartment. Prosecutors declined to charge the officer who shot Locke, saying body camera video showed him pointing a gun at the officer, a claim his family disputed. The city has since banned no-knock warrants except in the most extreme circumstances, such as a hostage situation.

Biden’s Net Approval Rating Is Underwater in 40 States

In most states, the pace of Biden’s decline slowed between the last quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, but he’s still deep in the red.

Biden’s net approval rating fell by 38 points among independents in Michigan, along with 33-point declines with the group in Georgia and Minnesota.

More than half of Democratic voters “strongly” approve of Biden’s performance in just one state — Wyoming — compared to 47 states in the first quarter of 2021.
