Might want to take a real close look at these polls. What about those giant numbers strikes you as different? What does the Insider Advantage (+12) the Trafalgar Group (+9) and Rasmussen Reports (+8) all have in common?

Well they are all Likely Voter polls. The rest are all Registered Voter polls. The difference being that Politico, Quinnipiac, Harvard-Harris, and YouGov are not bothering to ask any questions about the likelihood that these people would vote. They are just asking who they would vote for.
  • The average of the Registered Voter polls shows Dems up by just under 1%.
  • The average of the Likely Voter polls shows the GOP up by just under 10%.
That is a disturbing difference if you are a Democrat. Especially considering that Democrats nearly always underperform their generic ballot polling by generally 2-3 points and sometimes even more. Things better change and they better change in a hurry. By mid summer most Americans have already made up their minds about how things are going and it takes quite a bit to change that narrative in just a few short weeks.

Do we have a "red wave" a coming?

Disney’s clapback to Gov. Ron DeSantis came in a note to investors on April 21, one day after lawmakers voted to punish the company for having the gall to oppose Florida’s “Don’t say gay” bill.

It turns out that a phrase deep in the law that created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a 56-year-old special taxing district that independently governs Disney, indicates the state actually can’t dissolve the district until its debt is paid off. That’s about $1 billion, according to the credit rating agency Fitch Ratings.

The statement, posted on the website of the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board, quotes the Florida statute that created the district, noting that it says, in part, that the “State of Florida pledges . . . it will not limit or alter the rights of the District . . . until all such bonds together with interest thereon . . . are fully met and discharged.”

Disney said in the note that it would “explore its options while continuing its present operations.” That sounds like business as usual to us.-

This is what happens when lawmakers rush into decisions. There was no time to fully explore the issue or consider its ramifications of the legislation. Three days after the bill was filed, the House passed it, 70-38, and sent the bill to the governor. Lawmakers are elected to represent us but how much conversation could they have had with constituents in a handful of days?

#1 issue in America.

Mentions of economic issues as the country’s most important problem have soared over the past year and a half. In April, thirty-nine percent of Americans named an economic issue such as inflation, fuel prices, or the economy in general as the most important, up from 11 percent in December of 2019, before the pandemic struck.

Remember how Trump kept saying how easy it would be to balance the federal budget (‘very quickly’), repeal Obamacare and replace it (‘with something terrific’), and sign a massive infrastructure bill? None of those things actually happened, except the infrastructure bill—which was signed by Joe Biden.

Now alky, we all know you live an existence of relative isolation in your nursing home/insane asylum (AKA The Cuckoo's Nest), so I feel compelled to inform you that Trump is no longer President, and has not been for several months.

Your constant stream of references to Trump would lead one to believe that you are in the grip of a serious mental illness. A mental illness that for some unknown reason you feel compelled to project on to your roommate, the infamous "5th Beatle."

Watching the GOP self destruction is amusing.

Puppet of the Democratic Party’: Tucker Carlson Grills Kevin McCarthy

ByAmerican Faith

Since Tesla CEO Elon Musk placed his bid to buy Twitter, many in America’s ruling class have come down squarely on the side of censorship. Tucker Carlson recently reminded his viewers that Republicans, including Kevin McCarthy, did nothing to stop the problem when the GOP held majorities in both chambers of congress.

According to a report in The New York Times, the House Minority Leader suggested that he wants fellow GOP lawmakers who echo Donald Trump’s election fraud claims to be censored on Twitter. In a conversation with anti-Trump Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), a noted McCarthy ally, the GOP leader said: “Can’t they take their Twitter accounts away, too?”, referring to said GOP lawmakers.

McCarthy also privately stated that he wanted Trump to resign before his term ended. McCarthy said as much in a secret audio clip shortly after the 2020 election.

Publicly, McCarthy has voiced support of free speech on social media. At various times throughout the past two years, he has called for less censorship. He has been criticized by some on the right for not being as aggressive in some instances, particularly when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) personal Twitter account was permanently banned.

Only after backlash did McCarthy speak on the matter.

During his Tuesday night episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight, the Fox News host reminded his viewers about McCarthy’s unwillingness to act.

In Carlson’s opening monologue, he mostly touched on the ruling class reaction to the prospect of online free speech, pointing out those mostly on the left for being so staunchly against it.

He then lasered in on these previous remarks from the leading Kevin McCarthy. Carlson did not mince words when he discussed the implications of the very real possibility of McCarthy being named the Speaker of the House when Republicans presumably take the majority in November. “Unless conservatives get their act together right away, Kevin McCarthy or one of his highly liberal allies like Elise Stefanik (R-NY), is very likely to be Speaker of the House in January. That would mean we would have a Republican Congress, led by a puppet of the Democratic Party.”

Carlson added that those in charge, regardless of political party, largely support censorship. “So you wouldn’t know any of this unless it was leaked. And you can start to see why the people in charge oppose transparency and fervently support censorship, on both sides.”

The next threat to democracy in the US: Moms for Liberty?

The rapidly growing non-profit is carrying the most radical elements of modern US conservatism to the mainstream.

Christopher Rhodes

Lecturer in Government at Harvard University and lecturer in Social Sciences at Boston University.

Published On 27 Apr 202227 Apr 2022

It sounds like the plot of an over-the-top action movie or a political satire: mothers joining local school boards across the country are actually part of a radical network infiltrating government from the bottom up, determined to take power, punish their opponents and eventually rule with an iron fist. But this seemingly outlandish plot is actually a disturbingly accurate description of Moms for Liberty, a rapidly growing non-profit that has its members pressuring local school boards to ban LGBTQ and race-related materials, remove COVID-19 restrictions and adopt other conservative measures.

In a political climate marked by violent insurrection, unhinged conspiracy theories, voting restrictions, anti-Black and anti-LGBTQ censorship and denials of basic history and science, a group of mothers attending local school board meetings seems like the least threatening thing coming out of the current conservative movement. Yet the veneer of respectability and benevolence that comes with the image of “concerned mothers” is in fact a thin veil for a broader and more sinister movement. Moms for Liberty is an offshoot of the far-right movement that has come to dominate modern American conservatism, with its tactics representing a dangerous shift in strategy for this movement.

With a name that sounds righteous to the group’s supporters and Orwellian to its detractors, Moms for Liberty’s beginnings were fairly innocuous. The organisation was founded by Tina Descovich, Tiffany Justice and Bridget Ziegler – three women who had been members of local school boards in Florida. Initially, the group focused on opposing mask mandates in Florida public schools. But as membership grew in Florida and spread to other states, Moms for Liberty quickly grew into a federation of local chapters throughout the country fighting a wider array of culture wars-inspired issues. The group has pushed for bans on critical race theory – prohibitions that have been broadly interpreted to essentially ban discussions of racism – and LGBTQ-friendly content.

The group’s leaders proudly tout their close relationship with the Republican Party. Rising stars of the party – including governors Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, Kim Reynolds of Iowa, and Ron DeSantis of Florida – make a show of their close ties with and the virulent support they receive from Moms for Liberty. The group has launched several political action committees and has indicated a desire to move beyond school board elections to endorsing political candidates more generally.

Moms for Liberty has come under scrutiny not only for its right-wing agenda but also for its tactics. The organisation has been blamed for loudly disrupting school board meetings, harassing officials at their homes, and even making false accusations of child abuse. One early target of this treatment was Jennifer Jenkins, who defeated Moms for Liberty co-founder Descovich for a local school board race. Jenkins reports that Moms for Liberty began disrupting school board meetings, accusing board members of being “paedophiles” and making thinly veiled threats of violence against them. Jenkins’ cell phone number was publicised by a state senator with ties to Moms for Liberty, and she was even falsely reported for child abuse, sparking an official investigation. Moms for Liberty, of course, denies any involvement in such aggressive and potentially illegal tactics, while openly espousing the ideas behind them.

As Moms for Liberty expands in membership and influence, its agenda has become more comprehensive and aggressive as well. Members of the group aggressively advocated for the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill that passed in Florida. A quick perusal of the group’s official Twitter accounts shows it promising to “fight against forced masking” in schools, harkening back to the organisation’s original rally cry. But the page is also filled with posts or retweets condemning “transgender indoctrination,” linking LGBTQ-inclusivity to paedophilia and calling for jail time and fines for teachers who teach critical race theory, social-emotional learning and other concepts that have become distorted and demonised by the right.

Indeed, as mask mandates – the group’s original mobilising issue – have largely been dropped, racial and LGBTQ issues are increasingly becoming the group’s main areas of focus. A new tactic, for example, has been to equate gender and sexuality-related content in schools with “grooming” children for sexual abuse and exploitation. Co-founder Justice dismisses criticism of such inflammatory language. “If anyone says that they don’t like that label,” she says of the unsubstantiated grooming accusations, “then I say stop messing with our kids.”

Such increasingly radical stances place Moms for Liberty alongside other right-wing movements that were once fringe but have become mainstream within the Republican Party. In a sign of synergy between these various extreme-right movements, one prominent Moms for Liberty member who was appointed by DeSantis to the Florida Board of Education has demonstrated support for the QAnon conspiracy theory and the Capitol Hill insurrection

----
Unless the Republican Party gains it's sense, they are a serious threat to democracy.

A REUTERS SPECIAL REPORTTrump allies breach U.S. voting systems in search of 2020 fraud ‘evidence’

The vote tabulator from Cross Village Township is shown on a video taken by three men who tried to illegally “clone” it as they searched for evidence of fraud in Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss. REUTERS illustration

Chasing proof of vote-rigging conspiracy theories, Republican officials and activists in eight U.S. locales have plotted to gain illegal access to balloting systems, undermining the security of elections they claim to protect.

KIOWA, Colorado

Eighteen months after Donald Trump lost the White House, loyal supporters continue to falsely assert that compromised balloting machines across America robbed him of the 2020 election.

To stand up that bogus claim, some Trump die-hards are taking the law into their own hands – by attempting, with some success, to compromise the voting systems themselves.

Previously unreported surveillance video captured one such effort in August in the rural Colorado town of Kiowa. Footage obtained by Reuters through a public-records request shows Elbert County Clerk Dallas Schroeder, the county’s top election official, fiddling with cables and typing on his phone as he copied computer drives containing sensitive voting information.

Schroeder, a Republican, later testified that he was receiving instructions on how to copy the system’s data from a retired Air Force colonel and political activist bent on proving Trump lost because of fraud.

That day, Aug. 26, Schroeder made a “forensic image of everything on the election server,” according to his testimony, and later gave the cloned hard drives to two lawyers.

Schroeder is now under investigation for possible violation of election laws by the Colorado secretary of state, which has also sued him seeking the return of the data. Schroeder is defying that state demand and has refused to identify one of the lawyers who took possession of the hard drives. The other is a private attorney who works with an activist backed by Mike Lindell, the pillow mogul and election conspiracy theorist.

Schroeder said in a legal filing that he believed he had a “statutory duty” to preserve voting records. He declined to comment for this report.

The episode is among eight known attempts to gain unauthorized access to voting systems in five U.S. states since the 2020 election. All involved local Republican officeholders or party activists who have advanced Trump’s stolen-election falsehoods or conspiracy theories about rigged voting machines, according to a Reuters examination of the incidents. Some of the breaches, including the one in Elbert County, were inspired in part by the false belief that state-ordered voting-system upgrades or maintenance would erase evidence of alleged fraud in the 2020 election. In fact, state election officials say, those processes have no impact on the voting systems’ ability to save data from past elections.

The incidents include a North Carolina case, first reported last week by Reuters, in which a local Republican Party leader threatened to get a top county election official fired or have her pay cut if she didn’t give him unauthorized access to voting equipment. In southern Michigan, a pro-Trump clerk who has expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory on social media defied state orders to perform maintenance on a voting machine on the unfounded belief that doing so could erase proof of alleged fraud. In another Michigan case, a Republican activist impersonated an official from a made-up government agency in a plot to seize voting equipment.

“We’ve got to get rid of the machines! We need to melt them down and use them for prison bars and put everyone in prison that was involved with them.”

Hillary Clinton's tweet touting Trump-Russia collusion claims will not be allowed as evidence in the trial against Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann despite efforts by special counsel John Durham.

On Halloween 2016, Clinton tweeted, “Donald Trump has a secret server ... It was set up to communicate privately with a Putin-tied Russian bank.

Clinton later tweeted, “Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.”

She also shared a lengthy statement by then-Clinton campaign adviser, and President Joe Biden's current national security adviser, Jake Sullivan.

“This could be the most direct link yet between Donald Trump and Moscow,” Sullivan claimed. "This secret hotline may be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump’s ties to Russia.”

Sullivan added, “We can only assume that federal authorities will now explore this direct connection between Trump and Russia.”

On Wednesday, Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee, denied Durham’s efforts to bring the tweet up at trial, saying “the court will exclude that as hearsay” and that “it’s likely duplicative of other evidence” related to demonstrating the attorney-client relationship.

Sussmann was indicted in September for allegedly concealing his clients — Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign and “Tech Executive-1,” former Neustar executive Rodney Joffe — from FBI general counsel James Baker in September 2016 when he pushed since-debunked claims of a secret back channel between the Trump Organization and Russia’s Alfa-Bank. Sussmann has pleaded not guilty

It’s the age-old, classic tale of just how wrong things can go when the government tries to “help.” There is no shortage of historical evidence regarding exactly what can go wrong, yet politicians — especially those on the left — usually ignore it all and wreck things for the long term in order to win a popularity contest in the short term.

Athena’s post notes that the fear of a recession isn’t shared by all of the experts but that’s not much of a comfort. Her conclusion is dead-on:

Anyone who has been around a generation or two has seen all of this happen before. Biden and the Democrats’ inflation followed by recession was as predictable as the sunrise. And thus, it’s easy to predict what they will do next: blame the inevitable downturn they caused on the new Republican Congress we’ll be swearing in after the midterms.

Bet on it.

Deny and lie: That was Kevin McCarthy’s initial reaction to last week’s New York Times reporting about how he had privately blamed former President Donald Trump for inciting the Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol and was desperate to distance the party from Trump.

McCarthy had to change tacks after the Times produced audio recordings. Tucker Carlson slammed McCarthy on Tuesday night, calling him a “puppet of the Democratic party,” and Matt Gaetz went after him, too. But by yesterday morning, when McCarthy spoke to House Republicans at their weekly meeting, he was giving a “full-throated defense” of his leaked comments about Trump, claiming he had just been floating scenarios, and saying he was being persecuted.

It’s not enough to describe McCarthy as a liar who will betray anyone within his vicinity to protect his position atop the MAGA dump. Something is happening on a more disturbing level.

What’s disorienting about McCarthy’s machinations is that what the House Republican leader is trying to defend and explain away is his temporary display of honesty. After the ugliness and the deaths of the attack on the Capitol, McCarthy—and the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, whose private comments about Trump have also been leaked—came to their senses. McCarthy and McConnell said they were fed up with Trump and remarked how he could be removed, with McConnell asking a reporter about the Twenty-fifth Amendment and both men discussing impeachment.

So McCarthy and McConnell knew that Donald Trump was bad for their party.

They knew that Trump was bad for the country.

They knew that he was to blame for Jan. 6th.

And they talked about getting rid of him.

Yet neither man publicly called on Trump to resign. Neither man voted to impeach or convict Trump. In public, they attacked the proposal for an independent Jan. 6th commission. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has warned the West of a “lightning fast” response to any country that intervenes in its war against Ukraine war and creates what he called “strategic threats for Russia.”

“We have all the instruments [to respond] that no one can boast of ... we’re going to use them if we have to,” he said, in what has widely been seen as an allusion to Russia’s arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.

Russia shocked the European community by halting gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday because they had refused to pay for the gas in Russian rubles, as Moscow demanded.

The move comes as tensions remain high between Western allies and Russia after Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday said the threat of a nuclear war is very significant and the risks should not be underestimated.

U.S. President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak on America’s commitment to Ukraine at 10:45 a.m. ET.

A member of the far-right Proud Boys group on Wednesday pleaded guilty to obstructing police officers when he joined the 6 January 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol by supporters of then-president Donald Trump, in their attempt to overturn his election defeat.

The plea agreement filed in federal court in Washington, DC, calls for Louis Enrique Colon of Missouri to admit to a single felony charge and cooperate with prosecutors.

Colon admitted to crossing police barricades during the riot before climbing a wall to gain access to a higher level of the Capitol.

While inside the Capitol building, Colon used his hands and a chair to obstruct police officers who were trying to lower retractable doors to stop rioters from streaming into the building.

The attack followed a rally led by Trump near the White House, in which he urged thousands gathered to advance to the Capitol and “fight like hell” while both chambers of the US Congress were convening to certify Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in the 2020 election.

Biden’s win was certified in the early hours of the following day after lawmakers, staff and journalists had fled for their lives during the deadly riot at the Capitol.

Colon, 45, was charged in February 2021, along with four other members of the Kansas City metro chapter of the Proud Boys group. He is the first defendant in that case to plead guilty.

A judge had imposed monitoring conditions on Colon while he awaited trial. Colon will be sentenced later this year, and he faces a statutory maximum of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The economy's overall decline in the January-March quarter does not mean a recession is likely in the coming months. Most economists expect a rebound this quarter as solid hiring and wage gains sustain growth.

Instead, the steady spending by households and companies suggests that the economy will likely keep expanding this year even though the Federal Reserve plans to raise rates aggressively to fight the inflation surge. The first quarter was hampered mainly by a slower restocking of goods in stores and warehouses and by a sharp drop in exports.

“The report isn’t as worrisome as it looks,” said Lydia Boussour, lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “The details point to an economy with solid underlying strength that demonstrated resilience in the face of Omicron, lingering supply constraints and high inflation.”

The Commerce Department's estimate Thursday of the first quarter's gross domestic product — the nation's total output of goods and services — fell far below the 6.9% annual growth in the fourth quarter of 2021. And for 2021 as a whole, the economy grew 5.7%, the highest calendar-year expansion since 1984.

The first quarter’s weak showing is evidence the economy is slowing from last year’s robust rebound from the pandemic, which was fueled in part by vast government aid and ultra-low interest rates. With stimulus checks and other government supports having ended, consumer spending has slowed from its blistering pace in the first half of last year.

US. gross domestic product shrank at a 1.4% annual rate in the first quarter as supply disruptions weighed on the economy, though solid consumer and business spending suggest growth will resume.

The decline in U.S. gross domestic product marked a sharp reversal from a 6.9% annual growth rate in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The drop also marked the weakest quarter since spring 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic and related shutdowns drove the U.S. economy into a deep—albeit short—recession.

The drop in GDP stemmed from a widening trade deficit, with the U.S. importing far more than it exports. A slower pace of inventory investment by businesses in the first quarter—compared with a rapid buildup of inventories at the end of last year—also pushed growth lower. In addition, fading government stimulus spending related to the pandemic weighed on GDP.

Despite the slip, many economists think that overall the economy remains on track to resume modest growth in the second quarter and beyond, in part because consumers and businesses are continuing to spend. Consumer spending, the economy’s main driver, rose at a 2.7% annual rate in the first quarter, a slight acceleration from the end of last year.

“It’s really hard for the economy to grow rapidly once you’ve recovered to a substantial degree,” said David Berson, chief economist for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.

NOVEMBER is coming...

ROMA, Texas—Customs and Border Protection officials and Department of Homeland Security staffers ripped DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s immigration plan as unserious and ill-equipped to handle the unprecedented surge of migrants on the border.

"I don't even know where to start," said one Border Patrol officer stationed along the southwest border, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly. "Nothing in this plan Mayorkas says he’s going to do has even been started, and he’s not going to do it anyway."

Mayorkas released a 20-page report on Tuesday entitled "DHS Plan for Southwest Border Security and Preparedness" the night before he testified in front of Congress on the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis. The report outlines six initiatives the agency is taking to stem the "increase in migration being experienced by the United States" and prioritizes migrant processing over border security.

But those with decades of experience working in immigration expressed skepticism at—or outright mocked—the plan in comments to the Washington Free Beacon. Their reactions demonstrate how Mayorkas has lost the faith of career personnel, many of whom complained of long hours and staffing problems.

"The plan looks like an absolute load of bullshit," said one senior DHS staffer. "Mayorkas is filled with excuses and his solution is to let them in. If you look at the plan there is an inordinate amount of focus on processing ‘vulnerable migrants’ compared to the lip service of securing the border. This administration has always been set to release as many migrants as possible and then make excuses as to why illegal aliens continue invading our country."

NOVEMBER is coming part II:

Everything is awful and it’s just getting worse. The progressive left created this misery for all of us, all by themselves.

They used a combination of the legal system, social media censorship and mainstream media bias (and maybe even more sinister means) to wrestle the 2020 election into submission. They gave us a President no one really wanted, one who wasn’t ready for “that 3a.m. call” and in fact was barely lucid most of his campaign. America did not want Joe Biden, and the chaos you’re seeing now is the manifestation of the collective consciousness of 325 million Americans who have the sinking feeling that something’s not right.

Progressives got cocky after January of 2020. They and their Democrat overlords genuinely believed that they could permanently squash all opposition and end the Republican Party and conservatives forever. It is an astounding ignorance, given that this country is and pretty much always has been split right down the middle politically speaking. Politics are cyclical, which has been a saving grace of American governance. We are currently looking at what happens when one side believes the cycle is over.

No one likes it.

NOVEMBER is coming part III:

President Joe Biden’s 15-month dismantling of U.S.-Mexico border protections and policies has essentially eliminated efforts to keep illegal immigrants out of the nation, according to the nation’s front-line sheriffs.

“We simply have no border left in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, or Southern California,” said the nation’s sheriffs in a four-paragraph letter to Senate leaders and provided to Secrets.

The letter, signed by Jonathan Thompson, the executive director and CEO of the influential National Sheriffs’ Association, and dozens of top sheriffs, was law enforcement’s latest support for keeping in place Trump-era COVID-19 restrictions known as Title 42, which Biden wants to set aside.

But even with that policy in place, said Thompson, Biden’s team has encouraged 1 million border crossers in just six months, and he warned that the surge had hidden other criminal adventures by illegal immigrants.

The Department of Homeland Security is setting up a Disinformation Governance Board in an attempt to combat “misinformation” online.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas spoke about the “just established” governance board during a congressional hearing on Wednesday, arguing it would help reduce domestic threats to the United States.

Nina Jankowicz, a fellow for the Wilson Center, confirmed reports that she would direct the board, sharing her official government portrait on her social media profile.

“Cat’s out of the bag: here’s what I’ve been up to the past two months,” she wrote.

She claimed the new board was created to “maintain the Department’s commitment to protecting free speech, privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties" . . .

. . . Jankowicz has long been an advocate for social media censorship and regulation.

In October 2020, Jankowicz testified to the House Select Committee on Intelligence on the dangers of misinformation and conspiracy theories and how to stop it online.

“Disinformation is a threat to democracy,” she warned and criticized the government and social media platforms who have “all but abdicated their responsibility” to address ”domestic disinformation.”

WASHINGTON—The Biden administration sent Congress a sweeping $33 billion request to fund weapons and provide economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, seeking to provide longer-term assistance as the country’s conflict with Russia enters its third month.

The proposal, which President Biden is announcing Thursday, would infuse billions of additional aid into Ukraine through the end of September and attempt to bolster assistance to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government along with humanitarian and military aid, administration officials said.

“This war will not end easily or rapidly but the free world is united against this brutal invasion and we must continue to be in the best position possible to respond to a variety of scenarios,” said an administration official, outlining the package.

President Biden will ask Congress for $33 billion to help the Ukrainians fight Russia’s invasion, the Washington Post reports.

“Biden’s funding request includes $20 billion in military assistance for Ukraine, $8.5 billion in economic assistance and $3 billion in humanitarian aid, among other pots of money, such as $500 million to support production of U.S. crops to address the global food shock caused by the war.”

Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 7.5 million, an increase of 234,000 jobs from the previous quarter. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment gain of 1.3 million jobs in the private sector during the third quarter of 2021. (See tables A and 1.) The change in the number of jobs over time is the net result of increases and decreases in employment that occur at all private businesses in the economy. Business Employment Dynamics (BED) statistics track these changes in employment at private-sector establishments from the third month of one quarter to the third month of the next. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses is the net change in employment. (See Technical Note.) The BED data series include gross job gains and gross job losses by industry subsector, for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, as well as gross job gains and gross job losses at the firm level by employer size class. Gross Job Gains In the third quarter of 2021, gross job gains represented 7.2 percent of private-sector employment. Gross job gains are the sum of increases in employment due to expansions at existing establishments and the addition of new jobs at opening establishments. Gross job gains at expanding establishments totaled 7.1 million in the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 542,000 jobs compared to the previous quarter. Opening establishments accounted for 1.7 million of the jobs gained in the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 112,000 jobs from the previous quarter. (See tables A, 1, 2, and 3.) Gross Job Losses In the third quarter of 2021, gross job losses represented 6.2 percent of private-sector employment. Gross job losses are the result of contractions in employment at existing establishments and the loss of jobs at closing establishments. Contracting establishments lost 5.9 million jobs in the third quarter of 2021, a decrease of 45,000 jobs from the prior quarter. In the third quarter of 2021, closing establishments lost 1.5 million jobs, an increase of 279,000 jobs from the previous quarter. (See tables A, 1, 2, and 3.) Establishment Births and Deaths In the third quarter of 2021, the number of establishment births (a subset of the openings data) increased by 5,000 to a total of 356,000 establishments. These new establishments accounted for 1.0 million jobs, an increase of 32,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Data for establishment deaths (a subset of the closings data) are available through the fourth quarter of 2020, when 694,000 jobs were lost at 218,000 establishments, a decrease of 3,000 jobs from the third quarter of 2020. (See Technical Note and table 8.) Table A. Three-month private-sector gross job gains and losses, seasonally adjusted ------

LONDON — As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine hits its 64th day, a former NATO commander urged the West to prepare for a “worst-case” scenario: war with Russia. Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday visited areas around Kyiv that were formally held by Russian forces. “The war is evil,” he said while standing beside destroyed apartment blocks in Borodyanka.

In response to comments made by the U.K. foreign secretary over the West needing to “double down” on its support for Ukraine, former NATO commander Sir Richard Shirreff told BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program it was “absolutely the right approach” and that “it’s got to be followed through with significant resources, and it’s got to be done right across the alliance, as a whole.”

Shirreff, formerly a NATO deputy strategic commander for Europe, then went on to caution that the Kremlin is likely to respond to this aggressively and that the West should be prepared for a worst-case scenario. “The worst case is war with Russia,” he said. “By gearing itself up for the worst case, it is most likely to deter [Russian President Vladimir] Putin because ultimately Putin respects strength.”

Joe Biden is also taking steps to ensure the money raised from assets seized from sanctioned allies of Vladimir Putin directly aids Ukraine. The president is sending a proposal to Congress to make it easier to transfer those funds to humanitarian projects in Ukraine.

A number of Russian oligarchs have been sanctioned since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and some lawmakers have been working to ensure that the funds accumulated from those measures benefit the Ukrainian people.

Joe Biden emphasized that his new request for $33bn in assistance to Ukraine should not be taken as an attack on Russia.

Reputed federal informant, whistleblower found dead in L.A. after he's reported missing

"We had a complicated relationship, but this is just devastating to hear,” a journalist who described him as a longtime source said.

A reputed federal informant and whistleblower who went missing after he was reported to have turned over a trove of secret files about Deutsche Bank was found dead at a Los Angeles school this week, a police official said Wednesday.

The body of Valentin Broeksmit, 46, was found Monday at Woodrow Wilson High School shortly before 7 a.m., Sgt. Rudy Perez of the Los Angeles School Police Department said in an email.

Records of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner do not list a cause of death. Los Angeles Police Capt. Kenneth Cabrera told the Los Angeles Times that authorities do not suspect foul play.

Broeksmit was last seen driving a red Mini Cooper on the afternoon of April 6, 2021, on Riverside Drive and was later reported missing by relatives, Los Angeles police said.

His vehicle was found, the department said, but Broeksmit remained missing.

Perez said Wednesday that he appeared to be homeless.

According to a 2019 profile in The New York Times, Broeksmit was a musician and the son of a Deutsche Bank executive who died by suicide in 2014.

Federal and state authorities were scrutinizing allegations of criminal misconduct and the bank's long relationship with former President Donald Trump, the newspaper reported.

According to The Times, Broeksmit supplied the documents to journalists and others, including Fusion GPS, the research firm linked to an unverified dossier about Trump, and investigators with the FBI's New York office.

After a meeting with FBI agents in Los Angeles, the agency permitted Broeksmit to publicly identify himself as a cooperating witness in a federal criminal investigation, the paper reported.

Neither Fusion GPS nor the FBI immediately responded to requests for comment.

David Enrich, the Times reporter who wrote the profile, said Tuesday on Twitter that Broeksmit was a central character in his 2020 book, "Dark Towers: Deutsche Bank, Donald Trump, and an Epic Trail of Destruction," and that news of his death was "terrible."

"We had a complicated relationship, but this is just devastating to hear," he said.

Biden will also ask for $8.5bn in economic aid to Kyiv and $3bn in humanitarian relief, as well as funds to help increase US production of food crops and strategic minerals to offset the impact of the war in Ukraine on global supplies.

The total request for supplemental spending comes to $33bn. The last supplemental request approved by Congress in March was $13.6bn. Russia has warned that increased western weapons supplies to Ukraine would endanger European security.

In a letter to the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, Biden said: “What I want to make clear to the Congress and the American people is this: the cost of failing to stand up to violent aggression in Europe has always been higher than the cost of standing firm against such attacks.”

The new military assistance the congressional funding will finance will include.

More artillery and armored vehicles, as well as anti-tank missiles and anti-aircraft systems.

Help to build up Ukraine’s cyber warfare capabilities.

More intelligence sharing.

Support to increase Ukraine’s ability to produce munitions and strategic minerals.

Assistance in clearing landmines and other explosives and in Ukraine’s defence against chemical, biological and dirty bomb attacks.

Assistance to clear landmines, improvised explosive devices and other explosives and for defending against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.

A further buildup in the US military presence on Nato’s eastern flank.

The package of proposals the administration is sending to Congress also includes measures to strengthen the hand of the justice department in pursuing Kremlin-aligned oligarchs.

So Roger....

You take issue with local people winning elections and then working their way up to make changes... somehow winning elections at local levels is a threat to Democracy...

and really what they are challenging is special interest groups and unelected public officials who seem to want to set rules for their own interest rather than in the interests of those they are supposed to serve.

I think you have Democracy vs fascism and tyranny backwards.

Winning elections is Democracy. Unelected officials and bureaucrats or even officials elected under false pretenses making laws that are unwanted by their constituents is not.

Los Angeles

After his father's death, Broeksmit gained access to his father's email account and found hundreds of files related to the bank, including board meeting minutes, financial plans, spreadsheets and password-protected presentations, the newspaper reported.

Republicans Planned to End Democracy with Martial Law - the Ultimate "Big Government"

The Trump presidency finally and for all time pulled the mask off their “we oppose big government” lie - there is no conceivable way a government could be “bigger“ than for it to establish martial law

Thom Hartmann

Some say the Republican Party has gone nuts. In reality, they’ve simply reached the endpoint toward which they’ve been moving for 62 years: fascism.

Republican politicians since Barry Goldwater’s 1960 campaign have trash-talked “big government” in the United States. Like Reagan’s assertions that cutting taxes on rich people would “trickle down” benefits to poor people, or his claim that destroying labor unions would increase take-home pay for working people, this one’s just another lie.

Since the 1980s, in fact, the GOP has been the ultimate “big government” party. And now we’re learning that Republicans in Congress were, just three days before Joe Biden was to be sworn in as president, calling for the ultimate big government power: martial law to prevent Biden‘s inauguration.

There’s no provision in either the Constitution or US law for a president to specifically invoke martial (or, as Marjorie Taylor Green calls it, “Marshall”) law, although a series of statutes under Sections 251-255 of Title 10, passed between 1792 and 1871 and generally referred to collectively as the Insurrection Act, can produce the same result.

They give the president extraordinary powers, allowing him to shut down or seize control of communications systems like cell phone providers or social media companies, freeze or seize the assets of individual citizens or organizations including nonprofit corporations like political parties, and to create a federal police force he can deploy nationwide that is answerable only to himself.

(If all of this sounds familiar, it’s almost step for step what Hitler did; we remember its most famous artifact, the Schutzstaffel or SS.)

And that’s exactly what members of the GOP’s Insurrection Caucus in Congress were asking President Trump to do as recently as January 17th, 2021, all to keep Trump in power for another four years.

Making it all even more shocking, this newly-revealed coup attempt happened months after Joe Biden won the election, the states and Congress had certified that win on January 6th, and the world was preparing to welcome Biden to the White House at noon, January 20th.

The Big Lie isn’t just that Trump had an election stolen from him: the GOP has been running a longer con, preparing the ground for Trump, for three generations.

When they started, it was just another grift. But now it has built a strong foundation for martial law and fascism in the United States should another Trumpy Republican win the White House.

It was 58 years ago that Barry Goldwater proclaimed:

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”

I remember this ad playing on my parents’ black-and-white TV during that 1964 election contest between Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson.

The GOP’s proclaimed opposition to “big government” was a lie then, and it’s a lie now. They’re quite happy to both expand and use government, so long as it’s used to benefit themselves and their rich friends.

THE REPORT CONTINUES

It was 58 years ago that Barry Goldwater proclaimed:

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”

I remember this ad playing on my parents’ black-and-white TV during that 1964 election contest between Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson.

The GOP’s proclaimed opposition to “big government” was a lie then, and it’s a lie now. They’re quite happy to both expand and use government, so long as it’s used to benefit themselves and their rich friends.

It’s been, however, a very useful lie for Republicans:

When their donors from the fossil fuel and chemical industries wanted to keep pumping poisons into our air and water rather than pay to dispose of them properly, Republicans claimed shrinking the role of government through pollution deregulation was the solution.

When their donors in the lumber industry wanted to continue to rip out old-growth forests and achieve maximum profits by clear-cutting everything else, “limiting government overreach” became a useful canard.

When their donors in the health insurance, pharmaceutical, and hospital industries wanted to use their power of life-or-death over Americans to extract maximum prices and profits, “Keep your government hands off my healthcare!” became the GOP mantra.

When their donors in the banking and finance industry wanted to use depositors’ money to gamble with stocks and mortgages, “ending oppressive big government regulations” that were “suppressing innovation” was the Republican rallying cry.

When their billionaire friends wanted to monopolize media and put over 1500 rightwing radio stations on the air to flip the politics of an entire generation toward tax cuts for the morbidly rich, “ending limits on free speech” through the Fairness Doctrine and media ownership rules was going to “restore fairness.”

When Big Airlines, Big Ag, Big Pharma, and dozens of other giant industries wanted to either buy out or crush their smaller competitors, Republicans stepped up to the plate to end enforcement of the Sherman Anti-Trust and other anti-monopoly laws in 1983, leaving the rest of us with the bill.

Small government was never the goal of the Republican Party or the conservative movement. It was always all about raw political power and the wealth that comes with it.

The Trump presidency finally and for all time pulled the mask off their “we oppose big government” lie. There is no conceivable way a government could be “bigger“ than for it to establish martial law.

The truth is that Republicans only oppose “big government” when it restricts their ability to make obscene amounts of money at the expense of working people. Or when government tries to help out the environment, those who’re down on their luck, or the victims of historic discrimination.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Republican advocates of “small government,” in addition to trying to pull the ultimate big government trigger of martial law in January of 2021, now also brag that they want to use the power of the governments they control to:

Narrow your right to vote

Imprison women seeking abortions

Ban books

Block efforts to green our energy sector

Harass gay and trans kids

Prevent minorities from having full representation in Congress

Turn school boards into inquisitors

Let utilities rip off solar customers

Trash public health

Put more guns in the hands of deranged mass shooters

Purge voting rolls of Democrats and minorities

Preempt local communities from protecting their own environment

Reduce the accountability of police for violent behavior

Ban gay marriage

Allow state legislatures to overturn the will of the voters in elections

Keep students in debt

Hand Medicare over to the big insurance companies

Increase hundreds of billions of dollars a year in taxpayer subsidies to the fossil fuel industry

Terrorize refugee children

Eliminate or turn most national parks into drilling and mining sites

End environmental protections

Thwart enforcement of food safety laws

Destroy workers’ rights to union representation

And now we find that a sizable number of congressional Republicans actually wanted Donald Trump to end democracy in America once and for all, replacing our system of checks-and-balances with a strongman oligarchy.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, for example, texted Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows that she’d talked with other members of Congress and they agreed that:

“[T]he only way to save our Republic is for Trump to call for Marshall [sic] law” and the President should pave the way for her and her colleagues, who’d already incited an insurrection, to now “go after Biden and anyone else!”

And Republican Congressman Scott Perry was calling on Trump to replace the attorney general with a toady who would void the election by declaring it fraudulent.

All this was still going on just three days before Joe Biden was to be sworn into office and move into the White House with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

At the same time the Sedition Caucus was doing their work, the Trump Administration itself was outright refusing to participate in handing government agencies over to incoming Biden administration officials.

Over at the Pentagon — the agency Greene and her colleagues wanted Trump to use to overthrow our government — Trump loyalist Kash Patel was reportedly blocking the normal handover processes that precede a new president taking over.

As Courtney Kube and Carol E. Lee reported for NBC News a month before the constitutionally scheduled January 20th transition:

“A Trump loyalist who was recently appointed as Pentagon chief of staff is controlling the Biden transition's team access to Pentagon officials, even blocking some career officials and experts from giving information about key defense issues to the transition team and telling political appointees to take the lead instead, say two current and two former U.S. officials.”

As you can see, Trump and his fascist followers have no problem breaking both custom and law to seize and hold power. They nearly got away with it in 2020, and might have if they had been able to follow Marjorie Taylor Greene’s advice.

Such an order by Trump may have provoked demonstrations, incited riots across America, or possibly even triggered a civil war.

In the end, a group of patriotic Americans, most of them Republicans, succeeded in blocking Trump’s plans. We’ll be learning more about them as the January 6 hearings go public this summer.

Trump- and insurrection-supporting Republicans should be in court for sedition, rather than pontificating about “big government” on Sunday talkshows.

But the GOP still has the plan in place, and could easily use this fascist “big government” strategy to seize control of our government to declare martial law in the future, unless Congress acts.

As the past six years have shown the entire world, Republicans won’t be satisfied until the American government is big and oppressive enough to keep them in power indefinitely.

And that’s regardless of how elections go, regardless of who tries to vote, and with the ultimate power — if future elections don’t go their way — to simply sic the US Army on the people using the martial law powers Representative Greene was so enthusiastic about on January 17TH.

CONGRESS MUST ACT!

Republican neofascists are playing a dangerous game that will rip America apart

 Thom Hartmann

April 28, 2022

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has declared war on Disney, while his colleague in Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott, is on a jihad against the parents of trans children.

This is how fascism progresses through its later stages toward tyranny.

Democracies typically don’t turn into fascist oligarchies by being invaded or losing wars. It usually happens from within, and is driven by an alliance between demagogic politicians, corrupt religious leaders, bigoted street brawlers, and some of the wealthiest people in society.

First, fascists identify groups of people they believe are both vulnerable and sufficiently powerless that they won’t be able to fight back. Typically, these are racial, religious, political or gender/sexuality minorities.

Enormous efforts go into demonizing the people the fascists have identified; members of the group who’ve committed crimes are heavily publicized, while “think tanks” and fascist allies in the media identify malicious “reasons” for those folks’ “deviance.”

Efforts by members of the demonized groups to achieve parity or equality in society are characterized as a “theft” of privilege and assets from the majority, legitimizing both verbal, legal, and physical attacks on members of the group.

For example, the billionaire Murdoch family’s top-rated morning show, Fox & Friends, recently wandered into a discussion about white people being “marginalized” by the possibility of our public schools teaching the actual racial history of America.

“[T]hey are not only trying to raise up minorities and make sure the playing field is even,” Brian Kilmeade said, “they’re trying to take down the white culture!”

Kilmeade, in full “White people are the victims!” mode, went on:

“Why are we being marginalized on a daily basis…? And it’s not even subtle! It’s actually out there! It is written in black-and-white!”

It’s played out this way in every democratic country that has fallen to tyranny from within. It’s how it happened in the 1930s in Italy, Germany, Japan and Spain, and today in Hungary, Poland, Egypt, Russia, The Philippines, and Turkey, among others.

More recently, Swanson Food Heir Tucker Carlson went on a rant about the Great Replacement Theory.

THE HARTMANN REPORT (continued at last. Someone REALLY didn't want you to see how this ends.)

________

AS IN FASCIST DICTATORSHIP.

And that’s regardless of how elections go, regardless of who tries to vote, and with the ultimate power — if future elections don’t go their way — to simply sic the US Army on the people using the marti law powers Representative Greene was so enthusiastic about on January 17TH.

Congress must act!!!!!

That went well.

Until Judge William Alsup actually rules, we won’t know if Berenson v Twitter has survived the motion to dismiss.

But it’s fair to say today’s hearing did not go as Twitter’s high-priced counsel expected. Especially the first 15 minutes, when Alsup repeatedly berated Twitter for its claim that settled law meant he had to dismiss the case.

Alsup had clearly read the lawsuit closely, and he pointed out over and over that Twitter had not explained how I had violated its “five-strike” policies. He also pushed back on Twitter’s claim that Pruneyard - the California decision that some free speech protection extends to large private property - doesn’t apply. He even suggested that discovery and depositions may be in order to understand the extent of Twitter’s collusion with the federal government in banning me.

Yes, he said that.

For a few minutes, I actually he thought he might reject Twitter’s motion from the bench. He didn’t, but he set a complete case calendar. (I’ll be honest: if he rejects the suit now, it’ll hurt more than it would have before today.)

Which means that as we wait for Judge Alsup to rule, we are going to be asking the lil bird - soon, as in by the end of the week! - for discovery and depositions about its conversations with the White House in July 2021 (and lots of other stuff too).

Can’t wait to see what turns up.

https://alexberenson.substack.com/p/so-youre-saying-theres-a-chance?s=r

-------------------------------------

Well maybe that's another reason Twitter decided to sell.

maybe they are about to be forced to go into "discovery" and cases start going against them

and the government...
