Disney caving to pressue?

In Florida, Disney Is Throwing in the Towel
Disney must have blanched and shrieked two weeks ago when DeSantis, rather than rolling over for being falsely dubbed homophobic and a hatemonger, began openly discussing cutting off Disney’s sweetheart tax break, via the Reedy Creek Development District, that allows Disney to essentially be its own government in the Orlando area.
At the same time, Fox News was riling up parents and potentially turning Disney’s own customers against it, parents were fighting back with op-ed pieces and television appearances, public-opinion polls were showing support for the parental-notification law, and the Manhattan Institute’s Chris Rufo published the infamous tape of a Disney executive boasting of “my not-so-secret gay agenda.”

Well it seems that the very parents who take their children to Disney parks, buy Disney products, and watch Disney movies are not impressed with Disney's stance here. Apparently parents of school aged kids actually "do" want some say in their children's education and seem a bit offended that the Disney corporation sort of attacked them.

The issue here has to be one of living in the liberal bubble. Do liberals (like those from Disney pushing this nonsense) really believe that Governors like DeSantis are out on an island with only a few white supremacists in support of these policies? Do they not understand that they policies are driven pretty much entirely by parents of school age children who do not want their children groomed and indoctrinated with this sort of agenda?

These are not just marginally popular laws, but actually wildly popular laws with the rank and file voter. Standing up against these laws (attempting to take children's education out of the hands of the parents) is simply a bad political move and one that will likely cost Democrats (by proxy) over the next couple of elections.

Florida is using the power of the government to force a business to become supportive of partisan conservative politicians.

A further note on dogs that didn’t bark: Not only is Disney backing down, note that the bill really had nothing to do with Disney in the first place. Disney is simply a large corporation that, like many other large corporations, does business in Florida. Did any other large corporations speak up about this bill? Not that I have heard of. Coming on the heels of the boycott-Georgia debacle that happened just a year ago, the lack of organized corporate opposition to the Florida law may be an indicator that American firms have changed their minds about the wisdom of taking overtly progressive positions on divisive issues.

Another reason why the Democrats must win πŸ†.

Florida bans 28 math textbooks in panic over Critical Race Theory

Bob Brigham

April 15, 2022

The state of Florida is rejecting 28 mathematics textbooks as a result of Republicans' purported outrage over Critical Race Theory.

On Friday, Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran announced that the state had rejected the math textbooks under the state's Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) standards.

"The approved list followed a thorough review of submissions at the Department, which found 41 percent of the submitted textbooks were impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics – the most in Florida’s history. Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics," the department announced.

"The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies. Despite rejecting 41 percent of materials submitted, every core mathematics course and grade is covered with at least one textbook," the department said.

Corcoran has been pushing the moral panic over Critical Race Theory.

In a December press release from Gov. Ron DeSantis, Corcoran claimed, "our classrooms, students and even teachers are under constant threat by Critical Race Theory advocates."

DeSantis praised the banning of math textbooks.

“I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law," DeSantis said after Corcoran found 21% of math textbooks "incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT."

KYIV/MARIUPOL, Ukraine, April 16 (Reuters) - Russia's warplanes bombed Lviv and its missiles struck Kyiv on Saturday, as Moscow followed through on a threat to launch more long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities after its Black Sea Fleet's flagship was sunk.

In besieged Mariupol, scene of the war's heaviest fighting and worst humanitarian catastrophe, Russian troops pressed recent advances, hoping to make up for their failure to capture Kyiv by finally seizing their first big prize of the war.

Moscow said its planes had struck a tank repair factory in the capital, where an explosion was heard and smoke seen in the southeastern Darnytskyi district. Its mayor said rescuers and medics were working there but gave no further details. read more

Ukraine's military said Russian warplanes that took off from Belarus had also fired missiles at the Lviv region near the Polish border, where four cruise missiles were shot down by Ukrainian air defences.

Across Ukraine to the southeast in Mariupol, Reuters journalists in Russian-held parts of the port city reached the Ilyich steel works, which Moscow claimed to have captured on Friday, one of two giant metals plants where defenders have held out in underground tunnels and bunkers.

The factory was reduced to a silent ruin of twisted steel and blasted concrete, with no sign of defenders present. Outside, at least half a dozen civilian bodies were scattered on nearby streets, including a woman in a pink parka and white shoes.

Someone had spraypainted "mined" on a fence by an obliterated filling station forecourt. In a rare sign of life, one red car drove slowly down an otherwise empty street, the word "children" scrawled on a card taped to the windshield.

In Mykolaiv, another a city close to the southern front, Russia said it had struck a military vehicle repair factory.

The bomb and missile attacks followed Russia's announcement on Friday that it would intensify long-range strikes in retaliation for unspecified acts of "sabotage" and "terrorism", hours after it confirmed the sinking of its Black Sea flagship, the Moskva.

Report ad

Kyiv and Washington say the ship was hit by Ukrainian missiles, a striking display of Ukraine's military success against a far better-armed foe. Moscow says it sank after a fire.

A month and a half into President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Russia is trying to capture territory in the south and east after withdrawing from the north following a massive assault on Kyiv that was repelled at the capital's outskirts.

Russian troops that pulled out of the north left behind towns littered with bodies of civilians, evidence of what U.S. President Joe Biden this week called genocide - an attempt to erase Ukrainian national identity.

Russia denies targeting civilians and says the aim of what it calls its "special military operation" is to disarm its neighbour, defeat nationalists and protect separatists in the southeast.

Ukraine said its troops are still holding out in the ruins of Mariupol, where the defense is concentrated around Azovstal, another huge steel works that has yet to yield.

"The situation in Mariupol is difficult... Fighting is happening right now. The Russian army is constantly calling on additional units to storm the city," defence ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Motuzyanyk told a televised briefing.

"EVACUATE WHILE STILL POSSIBLE"

If Mariupol falls it would be Russia's biggest prize of the war so far. It is the main port of Donbas, a region of two provinces in the south-east which Moscow demands be fully ceded to Russian-backed separatists it has backed since 2014.

The war in Ukraine πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ has stymied President Biden’s agenda.

Courts have stymied the president on some initiatives. Early last year, Mr. Biden signed economic stimulus legislation that included $4 billion for Black and other “socially disadvantaged” farmers who were discriminated against for years by banks and the federal government. But the money remains frozen because of lawsuits.

In the face of those failures, Mr. Biden has said he will increase the use of executive actions that do not require congressional approval. Officials say the president is close to signing an executive order on changes to policing that was delayed by a surge in violent crime across the country. Mr. Biden has also stressed the steps he has taken to address inflation, including releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and efforts to encourage competition in industries like meatpacking.

In his remarks on Thursday in North Carolina, Mr. Biden called on Congress to act quickly on the semiconductor legislation, a sprawling bipartisan effort that would invest billions of dollars with the goal of helping the United States compete against China and other countries. The House and Senate passed competing versions of the bill and must reconcile the changes before sending it to Mr. Biden’s desk.

Mr. Biden said the legislation would bring down the cost of goods, noting for the audience that it would provide $90 billion for research and development, manufacturing and education in science, technology, engineering and math.

“All those elements of the supply chain,” he said, “we need to produce end products right here in America.”

Biggest Naval Combat Loss In 40 Years
April 16, 2022 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

New York Times: “Despite claims by Russia that an accidental fire broke out on the ship, U.S. officials confirmed on Friday that two Ukrainian Neptune missiles had struck the vessel, killing an unknown number of sailors and sending it and its arsenal to the bottom of the Black Sea.”

“The sinking of the Moskva on Thursday was a grave blow to the Russian fleet and a dramatic demonstration of the current era of warfare in which missiles fired from shore can destroy even the biggest, most powerful ships. It was also the most significant combat loss for any navy since 1982, when Argentina’s Air Force sank a British guided missile destroyer and other ships during the Falklands War.”

There may well come a day in the future when the exact opposite comes to fruition — when Americans who were not even near Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, nevertheless tell tall tales of their personal participation in such a historic event.  J6 may eventually be remembered in a similar vein to other "rebellious" undertakings such as the Boston Tea Party.  Remember, when Redcoat soldiers killed five colonials on March 5, 1770, the Crown took the quite defensible position that its soldiers had been attacked in a clear bout of unjustifiable "insurrection."  We Americans, however, have never known M5 as anything other than a terrible incident of government tyranny richly deserving of its infamous branding as the Boston Massacre.

Sorry Roger...

DeSantis and the GOP was voted in to pass bills in the state of Florida, not Disney. If Disney (representing probably 20% of the population who are overly woke) wants to try to bully them into accepting their lame hopelessly minority position, then they should expect push back.

Florida should stick it to them. They cannot move anywhere. There is no place else for Disney to create another "Disney World" - not without millions and millions in investments and losses.

Disney should stay the hell out of politics or accept that the politicians will fight back. As they should.

But that is the problem with liberals.

They want to be these bullies that push people towards policies...

Then they run screaming home to mom and dad crying racism and fascism when anyone fights back.

The worst of the worst personality traits.
