Is Joe Biden committing Obstruction of Justice?

We heard about 101 different excuses for why Trump committed obstruction, but what about Biden protecting his son?

It's one thing for a President to declare his own innocence. It's another for a sitting President (boss over the Attorney General) to declare unequivocally that his son (who obviously committed crimes) is innocent and for that same President to push back against a possible Special Counsel to investigate. The actual reasoning behind Special Counsels are to avoid this very conflict of interest. Either Joe Biden should welcome one (to clear his son's name) or he should not comment on his son's case or express opinions on a Special Counsel.

To be perfectly clear, there isn't a person following any of this who would not believe that a fair minded Special Counsel pressing ahead without interference or fear of repercussions would find that Hunter Biden has committed crimes. He is known to have hidden income and is currently battling with back taxes that he obviously should have had money to pay. He failed to register as a foreign agent (something that helped put Paul Manafort behind bars). He is also = sold influence to foreign powers and they believe he laundered money (back to the tax problems he faces). No honest person put in that position could come away without charged based just on what we already know (especially when much of these actions are almost identical to what Manafort and Gates were sent to jail for).

So when the President of the United States explicitly tells everyone (including his own AG and DOJ) that his son has not committed crimes and that no investigation is necessary, is he actually influencing the people tasked to make that call? Would the press be mum if President Trump had declared that Manafort and Gates should not only not be charged, but not even be investigated? There are certain responsibilities as President that might infringe on your desires as a parent to protect your children. While the parental urge can be easy to understand, acting on it as President is dubious and likely a form of obstruction.

A defendant (even in a trial) can talk to the press, demand their innocence, and use whatever forums they have to press that view. Short of a gag order, there is nothing illegal about that. Like it or not, Trump cannot be charged with a crime for saying an investigation into his behavior is a witch hunt. There was no gag order from any judge barring this.

But people in power cannot publically demand that "others" should not be investigated, when those people can influence the people who have to make that call. I would hate to be Merrick Garland right now. Damned if he does and extremely wrong if he doesn't.

Noem’s Vision for Future of GOP Focuses More on Reagan Than Trump

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a potential 2024 presidential candidate who has closely associated herself with Donald Trump, is expected to deliver a high-profile speech Wednesday evening on the future of the GOP that may not mention the former president at all.

The first-term governor is the latest Republican invited to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California as part of a speakers series on the party’s future, following its loss of the White House, Senate and House during Mr. Trump’s tenure in office.

In an advance copy of her speech provided to The Wall Street Journal, Ms. Noem has zero references to Mr. Trump, the party’s dominant current figure. “I don’t specifically mention him,” she said in an interview ahead of the speech.

She has started to act like a Reagan style Republican since January 6th.

It’s not every day that a House minority calls its investigative shots months before a likely takeover of power. Then again, Hunter Biden is no ordinary oversight target.

Top House Republicans are vowing to dig into the overseas business dealings of the president’s son if they claim the majority next year, as is expected — picking a battle with the Justice Department and Democratic lawmakers centered around some of the same themes that defined the Trump administration’s tempestuous relationship with Congress.

The younger Biden’s connections to a Chinese energy company are already under the DOJ’s microscope, with a grand jury hearing testimony earlier this year as part of an investigation into his tax dealings and possible violations of foreign lobbying laws.

But a federal inquiry isn’t deterring Republicans from pursuing broader allegations against Hunter Biden. The House GOP’s eagerness promises to test whether next year’s likely new majority can conduct legitimate oversight without falling down a rabbit hole of politically motivated allegations that have a murky provenance. Russian disinformation touching on Hunter Biden’s business dealings, for example, emerged during former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.

A witness who testified before the Hunter Biden grand jury was asked to identify the "big guy" in the first son's planned deal with a Chinese energy conglomerate -- as calls ramped up to have President Biden included in a conspiracy probe.

The question arose after the witness was shown a piece of evidence while appearing in secret before the panel in Wilmington, Del., a source familiar with the proceedings told The Post.

A bombshell email exclusively reported by The Post in October 2020 showed that one of Hunter Biden's business partners, James Gilliar, outlined the proposed percentage distribution of equity in a company created for a joint venture with CEFC China Energy Co.

The March 13, 2017, plan included "10 held by H for the big guy?"

Another former Hunter Biden partner, US Navy veteran Tony Bobulinski, later revealed that "the big guy" was Hunter's dad, then the Democratic candidate for president, saying, "I have heard Joe Biden say he has never discussed his dealings with Hunter. That is false."

...

In the wake of last week's report by the Washington Post -- which confirmed $4.8 million in payments from CEFC to entities controlled by Hunter Biden and first brother James Biden during 2017 and 2018 -- the White House on Sunday attempted to distance the president from his under-scrutiny kin.

Now, read this carefully:

White House chief of staff Ron Klain said his boss was "confident that his son didn't break the law" and "confident that his family did the right thing."

"But, again, I want to just be really clear, these are actions by Hunter and his brother," Klain told ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "They're private matters. They don't involve the president. And they certainly are something that no one at the White House is involved in."

And here's Biden putting out the word that 1, Hunter is innocent and should be found innocent, and 2, even if Hunter (and Joe's brother James) are found guilty of something, then Joe Biden should be found innocent of collaborating with them.

This is sending out signal to the DOJ and to this US Attorney to find the "truth" as the "president" orders it to be found -- and none of these people, previously so gung-ho about special prosecutors, even breathes the words "special prosector."

“The House Oversight Committee is going to be all over Hunter Biden,” said Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), who is slated to become chair of that powerful panel if Republicans win the majority in November.

“We’re going to focus on Hunter Biden not for political reasons,” Comer added, “but because we feel he’s a national security threat.”

While there’s a broad recognition on Capitol Hill that Hunter Biden’s financial moves are worthy of further investigation, the House GOP is all but telegraphing a do-over of the party’s 2020 election cycle efforts. And it has signoff from the chamber’s top Republican.

“I know the grand jury is looking now, but I think there’s a real need to understand what was always said, what other countries are paying him in the process,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in a brief interview Tuesday. “I think it is definitely something we should look at.”

Comer said he hopes DOJ doesn’t indict Hunter Biden before Republicans come into power because it would give him a reason to ignore a congressional subpoena, setting up a high-profile fight with DOJ. And on Tuesday, House Republicans on the Oversight panel previewed their push by seeking a subpoena for the presidential son at a committee hearing centering on electric vehicles.

In recent years, GOP lawmakers indulged a number of questionably sourced claims about Hunter Biden’s work with foreign companies that critics said were more intended to politically damage his father than to pursue genuine conflicts of interest. No evidence has emerged to show or suggest that Hunter Biden’s business deals have affected his father’s decision-making as president, though new reports about financial details found on a laptop that he left with a Delaware repair shop have resurrected Republican interest in finding smoking-gun proof.

State Supreme Courts are saving the right to vote

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a request by the state Republican Party to outlaw early voting, a practice that has historically aided participation in elections. All seven judges on the state's Supreme Court were appointed by a Republican governor.

The decision stems from a lawsuit originally filed by the Arizona Republican Party, along with its secretary, Yvonne Cahill, who argued that early voting is unconstitutional and that the court should, at a minimum, ban absentee voting for anyone who does not have a clear reason for voting by mail. If the court could not deem early voting unconstitutional, the suit also asked the Supreme Court to eliminate ballot drop boxes or ban ballot counting prior to Election Day.

On Tuesday, however, Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Brutinel, who was appointed by former Republican Governor Jan Brewer, shot down the GOP's general premise, saying that the party's suit did not meet the factual criteria required to establish standing.

It remains unclear whether the GOP will now opt to file a case in Superior Court.

State Democrats, who previously blasted the lawsuit, have celebrated the decision as a win for voting rights advocates across the Grand Canyon State amid a Republican-led effort to pass bills that would make it harder to vote for minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

"Today, the Arizona Supreme Court dismissed a dangerous lawsuit that threatened early voting in the state and challenged provisions of the Elections Procedures Manual," tweeted Katie Hobbs, Arizona's Democratic secretary of state. "Arizona voters will still be able to vote early, access drop boxes, and make their voices heard."

Ivanka Trump's testimony creates conflict between saving her brand and protecting her dad.

Another conflict she faces is the likelihood that Ivanka Trump did not believe her father had the 2020 election stolen from him, as he claimed.

"It's difficult to imagine that Ivanka Trump actually believes the things about the stolen election that her father believes," Reilly said. "Just generationally, she's younger, she's more internet-savvy, she's college-educated, she's probably a lot less conservative than her father. So to imagine that we're in a situation where she actually believe these lies that the president was spreading, which is what makes her testimony so important, because a critical thing here is whether or not Donald Trump actually believes the lies that he was telling about the stolen election. That's really a critical component of this, especially for the Justice Department investigation, where that's going to be a critical component to broader, to the broader investigation and criminal culpability ultimately."

"If he actually believed the lies about the stolen election, that's a lot different than just saying these things to try to make a splash and change direction of the election -- basically, essentially, steal the election," Reilly added. "If he knew they were lies, that's one thing. If you actually believe the lies, there's another. That could determine the trajectory of the criminal side of this investigation."

Obama may intend to fix things: Obama’s aiming to get back into the Oval Office.

My premise is that Obama fully understands that, if Biden is ousted immediately under the 25th Amendment, there are only idiots and incompetents to take his place. If it’s not Kamala Harris, then it’s Nancy Pelosi and, if not her, then Patrick Leahy, Antony Blinken, Janet Yellen, Lloyd Austin, Merrick Garland.... Obama knows none of these nonentities will secure the transformation he promised America. Instead, there are three steps to return Obama to the presidency:

1. Have the Democrat establishment remove Kamala Harris from office, whether through threats or bribes.

2. Have the Democrats declare that, because world instability (Ukraine, Putin, China) puts us at unprecedented risk, only a politically seasoned person can be Vice President, with Obama graciously accepting that role.

3. Oust Biden using the 25th Amendment. And voila! President Obama (again). He can even have Stacey Abrams as his veep.

The 22nd Amendment does not bar Obama from regaining the presidency this way. It only stops him from being “elected to the office.” The three steps above avoid an election.

Obama will then have two-and-a-half years to lock down America’s “fundamental transformation” into a fully socialized, third-world country, and Biden has given him a head start when it comes to destroying institutions. Heck, if Obama does the job right, he can be the new Putin or Erdogan: America’s President for Life.

You really believe that Joe Biden has blocked the investigation into his tax dealings and how it caused the first impeachment trial.

I believe that the President had publicly claimed that his son should not be investigated and that this would unduly influence the decision of Garland who technically works for Biden.

This was the same argument used by the left to accuse Trump of obstruction, only Trump was against investigations into him. By constitutional law, you can most certainly be vocally against someone investigating you. Everyone expects that the person being investigated is going to be against it.

But when Biden says his son committed no wrongdoing and that he should not be investigated... are you arguing that this does not influence Garland?

Right now... you are confusing "rallies" with "riots" and a whole bunch of other nonsense, in a lame attempt to peg "obstruction" charges against Trump. Funny how deep you will go into the abyss to back that, but obvious issues with the President trying to keep his son from being investigated doesn't seem to phase you?

Bernstein might be correct

It’s still hard to see the overall retirement story as signaling a collapse of Democratic resources — and candidates are an important resource — during the 2022 election cycle. That this has happened even as President Joe Biden remains unpopular and the conventional wisdom is even more settled on likely Republican gains suggests that if there is a landslide, it will be a bottom-up event driven by voters opposing Biden rather than a top-down defeat caused by Democrats’ disarray, hostility toward their own incumbents, or just plain fatigue. To be sure: If Biden remains unpopular, Democrats will suffer in November. But if not, I’m not seeing any strong evidence of an already-built-in Republican landslide.

The House will turn red. But the Senate..we'll see

Verbatim where I said the rate increases are/have been too much.
Should be very easy for you to do it.
Unless, as I know I never said the rate increase has been "too much" during the Biden Term.

Fact is, I said the feckless Federal Reserve failed to raise rates 12 + months ago.

Fact is, .25 rate increase is all the Federal Reserve has done

How the GOP fails at answering the simple question of what is a women!!!!

I’m not trying to pick at Greene, Cawthorn or Hawley for the fun of it. They had suggested that defining “woman” was simple, and I’m here to say that it’s not. Not when you take the question seriously, and look for answers outside your own immediate experiences and intuitions. Which is why when these lawmakers attempted to show how much smarter they were on gender science than a judge who takes things seriously for a living, what came out was gobbledygook.

LMAO:

“To help local officials whose communities are being overwhelmed by hordes of illegal immigrants who are being dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to send these illegal immigrants who have been dropped off by the Biden administration to Washington, DC,” Governor Abbott announced in his press conference.

“We are sending them to the United States Capitol, where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border,” Gov. Abbott continued.

Unspeakable

ABBY ZIMET

April 4, 2022

Really, we have no words. But the stomach-churning stories and images emerging from Bucha and other Ukraine towns call for some response, acknowledgement, lamentation, as powerless as it is. "While we all have seen many painful videos and pictures in recent weeks, nothing can be compared to what we've seen from Bucha," said Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who called the grisly evidence of Russian war crimes "unspeakable." Bloody bodies half buried in dirt, many with hands tied behind them. Bodies slung into muddy mass graves, boots and feet emerging. Bodies left lying in the street where they were struck down, or toppled over bikes, or stuffed into wells, or splayed in ignoble piles under hastily thrown tarps. Women raped, men tortured, cities become dark, twisted rubble, cars strafed by bullets despite "Children" scratched into them, a helpless, hopeful hedge against death. The mayor of Motyzhyn, her husband and their son shot at close range and dumped in a shallow grave, reportedly after being tortured when they refused to cooperate. "This is not a special military operation," said one resident. "This is genocide."

A.P. journalists reported seeing at least 21 bodies scattered around Bucha, several with their hands or feet bound. CNN reported dozens of bodies tossed into mass graves, with crying loved ones trying to locate their bodies. Human Rights Watch documented multiple mass executions, groups of kneeling men shot in the head, a woman cut, beaten and repeatedly raped, a woman and her 14-year-old son shot as they emerged from a basement where they were hiding. Ukraine officials say 410 bodies of civilians have been recovered, numbers certain to rise. Even as Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the atrocities "a punch to the gut" and vowed accountability, Russia's Ministry of Defense denied the reports as fake news and the images as "fabricated." We wish. In recent days, we've gotten emails that argue writing about Ukrainian heroism constitutes "cheerleading" for war, that there's no right or wrong, only victims. Yes, there are many victims. But there's also, more clearly each day, right and wrong here. In response to the stark wrong, some people of faith urge praying the imprecatory Psalms - "Oh God, break the teeth in their mouths" - to move from righteous indignation to solidarity. But even if we remember to curse and hold accountable not just evil people but systems, structures, mindsets, Russians - like Americans - show we have a long, long way to go.

Bottom up economics.

The Billionaires' Minimum Income Tax included in the budget plan released by President Biden on March 28 would limit an unfair tax break for capital gains income and complement proposals the president has offered previously to limit other tax breaks for capital gains. The new proposal would be phased in for those with net worth between $100 million and $200 million, and the Biden administration estimates that the majority of the revenue would be collected from billionaires. It would ensure that these individuals pay income tax of at least 20 percent on their real income, including both traditional taxable income and unrealized capital gains that go untaxed under the current rules.

These reforms would raise more than half a trillion dollars to fund investments. They would dramatically change the game to ensure that the wealthiest Americans are taxed more like the rest of us.

The Treasury Department estimates that the Billionaires' Minimum Income Tax would raise $361 billion over a decade, while other reforms proposed in the president's budget to address capital gains tax breaks for the wealthy would raise $174 billion over a decade. Together, these reforms would raise more than half a trillion dollars to fund investments. They would dramatically change the game to ensure that the wealthiest Americans are taxed more like the rest of us.

Kyiv Was Russian Defeat for the Ages
Associated Press:
“When President Vladimir Putin launched his war on Feb. 24 after months of buildup on Ukraine’s borders, he sent hundreds of helicopter-borne commandos — the best of the best of Russia’s ‘spetsnaz’ special forces soldiers — to assault and seize a lightly defended airfield on Kyiv’s doorstep.

“Other Russian forces struck elsewhere across Ukraine, including toward the eastern city of Kharkiv as well as in the contested Donbas region and along the Black Sea coast. But as the seat of national power, Kyiv was the main prize. Thus the thrust by elite airborne forces in the war’s opening hours.

“But Putin failed to achieve his goal of quickly crushing Ukraine’s outgunned and outnumbered army.
The Russians were ill-prepared for Ukrainian resistance,
proved incapable of adjusting to setbacks,
failed to effectively combine air and land operations,
misjudged Ukraine’s ability to defend its skies,
and bungled basic military functions like planning and executing the movement of supplies.”

Depends on your view...

If you are strictly "following science" which in this case is simple biology. A woman/female has XX chromosomes, while a man/male has XY chromosomes.

If you choose to make it about "gender" and try to keep up with the completely unscientific definitions that change almost daily, then your guess is as good as my dog's guess as to what it means.

But under the law (which is what a USSC Justice should be concerned with) there are pretty basic guidelines. They cannot just "willy nilly" make changes to constitutional law based on the latest "definition" of a gender that some GenZer came up with last night while taking a shower.

Why the GOP Is Very Afraid of Students Learning the Real History of Reconstruction

This breathtakingly ambitious effort led by formerly enslaved people to eradicate a brutal and centuries-old form of racist exploitation—and to build an entirely new society—is rarely captured in state standards.

According to the state of Georgia's Standards of Excellence for teaching the Reconstruction era to eighth-graders, students ought to "compare and contrast the goals and outcomes of the Freedmen's Bureau and the Ku Klux Klan." That side-by-side framing of the federal agency tasked with supporting formerly enslaved people in the years after the Civil War with a group of White supremacist terrorists has two problems: It is not only an unsettling echo of the "both sides" language mobilized by then-President Donald Trump following the 2017 deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, but is also an example of how state standards fail to help educate young people about one of the most important eras in U.S. history.

Why is it Roger...

That you start off with a lie...

Then follow it up with what you "really" want children to be taught. Which is you want teachers to teach children that somehow Slavery should be associated with 21st century behavior of people who are not "woke enough" for you.

Which of course isn't history. It's sociology or psychology or just plain philosophy... and has no business being "taught" as history.

Teach history.

Leave your "opinions" as to what it means in today's society out of History. One has nothing to do with the other. Teach it as a philosophical theory if you want where everyone is free to agree or oppose that decision like thinking people do.
