KJB may let them go with a slap on the wrist, but justice gets served despite her best effort to endorse this horror:

A prisoner in North Carolina who was convicted of murdering a toddler was killed in a group attack by other inmates, according to prison officials.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) said Semajs Short, 24, was attacked by other inmates at the Bertie Correction Institution, in Windsor, on Tuesday afternoon.

An opinion counter to LIl Schittty's exuberant predictions of the GOP cleaning up in November

on: The GOP is less popular than Biden. Why would voters put it back in power?
Image without a caption
By Jennifer Rubin

President Biden’s low approval ratings understandably receive a lot of attention. But that doesn’t mean Republicans are getting rave reviews. To the contrary, GOP congressional performance draws even less support than Biden does. And some of their most public stances get thumbs down with the public overall.
Sign up for a weekly roundup of thought-provoking ideas and debates

Take Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. Republicans spent weeks falsely claiming she is weak on child pornographers and analogizing her representation of detained combatants to representing Nazis. (The latter accusation from Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas drew a stinging rebuke from the Anti-Defamation League.) But poll after poll shows that voters approve of her nomination by much much greater margins than recent GOP-nominated justices enjoyed. Republicans’ efforts to smear Jackson have not gone over well with voters.
We’ve seen how the American people expresses overwhelming support for NATO and for admitting Ukrainian refugees. But the GOP’s pro-Russia hangover persists. Republicans’ support for NATO and for letting in refugees dramatically lags that of Democrats. On Tuesday, 63 House Republicans shockingly voted against a resolution supporting NATO.

When it comes to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, the public is quite favorable. Republicans in Congress, however, vilify it and threaten to shut it down.

Follow Jennifer Rubin's opinions

Meanwhile, some Republicans are back to arguing for repealing the Affordable Care Act. The law remains popular with voters. Polls also show a high percentage of voters don’t like book-banning, telling teachers they cannot talk about race, or sheltering kids from topics that might make them uncomfortable — all of which Republicans have proposed.
So if the GOP’s performance, its cult leader and its policies are so out of step with the public, why would voters decide to give them back the majority in one or both chambers of Congress? Well, this wouldn’t be the first time voters’ views defy logical explanation.

An opinion on how broke the GOP has become!!!!!!

Opinion: Anita Hill: The Senate Judiciary Committee mistreated Judge Jackson. I should know.
By Anita Hill
Yesterday at 8:00 a.m. EDT

Anita Hill is a professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at Brandeis University.
The shameful spectacle of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson makes clear: The confirmation process is broken and the panel must act to restore people’s faith in it.
Sign up for a weekly roundup of thought-provoking ideas and debates

This is not simply about Jackson’s reputation, which was repeatedly smeared by Republican senators peddling false narratives about her supposed coddling of child pornographers and terrorists. It is about the legacy and future of the Senate and the Supreme Court itself.
I know something about being mistreated by the Senate Judiciary Committee. During the confirmation hearing for Justice Clarence Thomas in 1991, I was subjected to attacks on my intelligence, truthfulness and even my sanity when I testified about my experience working for the nominee at the Education Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In a spectacularly low moment, senators sought out slanderous statements from my former students.
ADVERTISING

In some ways, the committee has changed for the better since then: There are now four women on the panel and one Black member. Still, when I heard predictions before the hearing that Republicans would offer little resistance to Jackson’s confirmation, I knew, from painful experience, that assessment was overly optimistic.
Even so, I was shocked by the interrogation of Jackson, a nominee with stellar credentials and more judicial experience than any of the sitting justices when they were nominated. It was obvious that no matter how composed, respectful or brilliant her responses, her critics’ only goal was to discredit her. I appeared as a witness before the committee and Jackson as the nominee, but in both situations Republican senators demonstrated their willingness to employ racist and sexist attacks.
It shouldn’t be this way, and it doesn’t have to. The committee should adopt — and enforce — standards such as those that exist for taking testimony in federal court proceedings. Questions should be relevant and well-founded. Witness-badgering should not be tolerated.

Gotcha questions like how to define a woman, asked by Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R), have no place in the hearing room, and fall short of what should be expected of the Senate during its exercise of its advice and consent role. The same is true of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R) focus on how critical race theory is supposedly being taught in the private school on whose board Jackson sits. A confirmation hearing should be about learning how a person will judge, not how well she handles specious browbeating.

Massive fraud discovered in Az R led audit.......

Laurie Roberts, Arizona Republic
d proclaim, “aHA!”

Yes, it seems that Arizona’s elusive election fraud has finally been uncovered.

The Arizona Republican Party was jubilant at the news, delivered in Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s interim report on the findings of the Maricopa County election audit.

“BREAKING NEWS: Arizona Audit w/ @KelliWardAZ. AG @GeneralBrnovich has determined widespread FRAUD in the Maricopa County 2020 election,” the Arizona Republican Party breathlessly reported.

State GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward was practically orgasmic.

“Perp walks & prosecutions on the way! #ElectionIntegrity,” she tweeted.

Ward even made a video about it (with a fundraising plea, no doubt, still to come).

“The report says the Election Integrity Unit review has uncovered instances of election fraud,” Ward reported to the party faithful. “Yes, election fraud by individuals who have been or will be prosecuted for various election crimes... Wow. That’s big. The words fraud and prosecuted are finally being used.”

Widespread election fraud = 9 cases in 3.4 million votes

Wow is right.

Especially if you read the footnote accompanying the 12-page report's lone sentence about election fraud – the one that references a report on all the fraud that Brnovich’s Elections Integrity Unit has uncovered in the 2020 presidential election.

All nine cases.

There are the six felons who somehow allegedly managed to vote while in Pima County jail.

And there are three women who returned their recently deceased mothers’ early ballots. Two of them live in Maricopa County, one in Cochise County.

So. Nine cases of election fraud. Out of 3.4 million votes cast.

Something’s widespread, all right, and rather fragrant, as well. But it isn’t fraud.

Within hours of Brnovich's report, Republican legislative hopeful Steve Zipperman had already pumped out a fundraising plea.

Kyiv

LVIV/BORODYANKA, Ukraine, April 8 (Reuters) - At least 39 people were killed and 87 wounded on Friday when two rockets hit a railway station in eastern Ukraine packed with evacuees, Ukrainian authorities said, as the region braced for a major Russian offensive.

Reuters could not immediately verify the information coming from the city of Kramatorsk.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of the Donetsk region, said thousands of civilians had been at the station at the time the rockets struck, in what he described as a deliberate attack. Many of the wounded were in serious condition, he said.

"They wanted to sow panic and fear, they wanted to take as many civilians as possible," he said. Kyrylenko published a photograph online showing several bodies on the ground beside piles of suitcases and other luggage. Reuters could not immediately verify the photo.

The Russian defence ministry was quoted by RIA news agency as saying the missiles said to have struck the station were used only by Ukraine's military and that Russia's armed forces had no targets assigned in Kramatorsk on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said no Ukrainian troops were at the station. "Russian forces (fired) on an ordinary train station, on ordinary people, there were no soldiers there," he told Finland's parliament in a video address.

Moscow has denied targeting civilians since invading Ukraine on Feb. 24 in what it calls a "special military operation" to demilitarise and "denazify" its neighbour. Ukraine and Western supporters call that a pretext for an unprovoked invasion.

Only 28% believe it would be better for America if Biden is reelected to a second term in 2024. Forty-two percent (42%) think it would be better for America if former President Donald Trump is elected again in 2024. Twenty-seven percent (27%) say it would be better if somebody else is elected president in 2024.

While 57% of Democratic voters believe Biden’s reelection in 2024 would be better for America, that opinion is shared by only 10% of Republicans and 16% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Sixty-six percent (66%) of Republicans think electing Trump again in 2024 would be better for the country, as do 19% of Democrats and 42% of unaffiliated voters.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy decried the Russian military as an "evil that knows no bounds" Friday following an attack on a railway station in eastern Ukraine that officials say left dozens dead.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said Russian forces carried out two missile strikes at the train station in Kramatorsk, where an evacuation of civilians was taking place. Images taken in recent days have depicted large crowds of Ukrainians standing on the station’s platforms hoping for a chance to escape Russia’s bloody invasion, which has now entered its 44th day.

"Not having the strength and courage to confront us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population," Zelenskyy wrote on his Facebook page Friday morning. "This is evil that knows no bounds. And if it is not punished it will never stop."

Game-Changing Weapons Begin to Flow to Ukraine After NATO Emergency Meeting

By streiff | Apr 08, 2022 11:00 AM ET

 Share

AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka

On Thursday, NATO held an emergency meeting about Russia’s increasingly horrific and atrocity-filled invasion of Ukraine. However, unlike most NATO meetings, this one was substantive.

For starters, the attendees were not only NATO nations; there were also observers present: the European Union, Sweden, Finland, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine. If Putin was afraid of being surrounded before, he should take a quick look at his map now (just a reminder that Japan and Russia still have an unresolved border dispute, see Russia conducts military exercises in disputed islands).  As if to validate the stereotype of the Germans being either “at your throat or at your heel,” the German Foreign Minister showed he was definitely at Putin’s heel by leaving early.

The main issue on the table was weaponry. Quantity, quality, and purpose were all concerns. To date, the weaponry supplied to Ukraine has been defensive, and the defensive weaponry has been careful not to tip the balance of power. At best, Ukraine could achieve a Russian withdrawal to February 23 lines in most of the country while going to a 1916-style stalemate in Donbas that would give up an extensive amount of territory and reward Putin’s land grab strategy. It was reminiscent of the Star Trek episode, “A Private Little War.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

To underscore the theme, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister made it very clear what he wanted.

Even as the meeting took place, individual NATO countries, particularly those from the old Warsaw Pact, started to act, leaving the tired German-dominated NATO hierarchy to follow.

Australia had already committed to sending at least 20 of their version of the MRAP, the Bushmaster, to Ukraine.

The conference did break a logjam.

This morning, Poland announced it was transferring a large number of modernized T-72 tanks to Ukraine. More importantly, Slovakia is transferring its S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine.

The S-300 transfer is one battery consisting of four launchers, and it has capabilities roughly comparable to the US Patriot system. It represents 100% of Slovakia’s air defense capability.

Slovakia’s prime minister took the unprecedented step of personally announcing the move.

Prime Minister Heger’s announcement took guts because the idea of Slovakia transferring the S-300 to Ukraine unsettles the Russians enough that they have threatened to attack any attempt to move the system.

The S-300 system is a potential game-changer as 1) the Russian Air Force has shown itself to be monumentally inept at attacking surface-to-air missile sites, and 2) the range of the system allows targets to be engaged shortly after take-off from bases in Belarus and Russia.

The meeting seemed to augur a shift in NATO’s attitude from February. Then there was a feeling of resignation, and sending aid to Ukraine was just throwing good money after bad. Now NATO appears to be working more from the idea that not only can Ukraine win this war but that Vladimir Putin cannot be allowed to walk away looking like anything but a loser. The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, penned an op-ed for the New York Times last week titled: I’m the Prime Minister of Estonia. Putin Can’t Think He’s Won This War.

To put an end to these horrors, the most optimistic observers have put their hope in a peace deal. But peace is not going to break out tomorrow. We must face up to the fact that the Kremlin’s idea of European and global security is completely at odds with that of the free world. And Vladimir Putin is willing to kill and repress en masse for the sake of it.

At NATO, our focus should be simple: Mr. Putin cannot win this war. He cannot even think he has won, or his appetite will grow. We need to demonstrate the will and commit resources to defend NATO territory. To check Russia’s aggression, we need to put in place a long-term policy of smart containment.

I think she gets this exactly right. Putin’s fear of NATO is not driven by the alliance’s threat to Russia; it is driven by the way the alliance constrains Putin’s imperial ambitions. If Putin is given any face-saving measure in peace negotiations, he will spin that into a win and move on to another victim. And, by the way, don’t delude yourself that any peace in Ukraine is final; it isn’t because Putin and, I believe, Russia does not view Ukraine as a legitimate country, and they will be back for another try at dismembering it (read Kremlin Newspaper and a Putin Confidant Endorse Genocide as Russia’s Final Solution to the Ukraine Problem).

The only way to prevent it is to ensure that Russia knows that Ukraine has parity in weaponry and the people have the courage to fight for their homes.

Axios

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech Friday that the situation in the city of Borodyanka is "much worse" than in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, where over 300 people were tortured and killed.

Driving the news: Zelensky said that there are "even more victims" in Borodyanka, which is approximately 15 miles from Bucha.

Ukraine's prosecutor general, Iryna Venediktova, said that in the Kyiv region — which includes Bucha and Borodyanka — authorities had found "650 dead bodies," and of those, "40 dead bodies" were children, per Reuters.

Catch up fast: The Ukrainian president had said earlier this week that he believed the death toll in Borodyanka and in other cities that Ukraine recently reclaimed from Russian forces "may be even higher" than that in Bucha.

What he's saying: "[S]o far, the Russian state and the Russian military are the greatest threat on the planet to freedom, to human security, to the concept of human rights as such. After Bucha, this is already obvious," Zelensky said.

"And the work on dismantling the debris in Borodyanka began. It's much worse there," Zelensky added. "Even more victims of the Russian occupiers."Zelensky said the attacks on the Kyiv region resulted in "mass killings of civilians," adding that he knows that Russian authorities are already working to create "a false campaign to conceal their guilt in the mass killings.""I want to say right away: Every normal person in the world understands who brought war and mass deaths to Ukrainian land. There is ample evidence that it is Russian troops who destroy peaceful cities, abduct, torture, kill civilians."

Between the lines: National security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Monday, "We have seen atrocities, we have seen war crimes, we have not yet seen a level of systematic deprivation of life of the Ukrainian people to rise to the level of genocide."

President Biden has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should face a war crimes trial over the reported atrocities in Bucha.

A Russian rocket that hit a Ukrainian train station had "For the children" written on the side.

The Friday morning attack in Kramatorsk killed dozens and injured over 100 people, authorities said.

Civilians had flocked to the train station to evacuate the city ahead of an anticipated Russian assault.

A Russian rocket that struck a train station and killed dozens in eastern Ukraine on Friday had a Russian phrase meaning "For the children" written on its side, Ukrainian officials said.

At least 30 people were killed and over 100 were injured after two Russian rockets hit the train station in Kramatorsk, which is in the Donetsk oblast.

Ukraine's communications center tweeted that two children were killed in the attack.

The phrase — seen scrawled in white on the side of a purported Russian rocket in photos and video from the scene of the attack — translates as a message that the missile was sent in vengeance for children, not that it was intended to be used on children.

Here are 4 bombshells from the report of an FBI investigation into 'classified material' found at Mar-a-Lago

Alex Henderson, AlterNet

April 08, 2022

In January, the U.S. National Archives retrieved 15 boxes of White House records from former President Donald Trump’s home at his Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida. Now, according to the New York Times, the FBI is getting ready to investigate the “handling of classified material” found at Mar-a-Lago.

Here are four important details reported by Times journalists Luke Broadwater and Adam Goldman on April 7.

1. Moving the material was apparently in violation of federal law.

Under the Presidential Records Act of 1978, presidential records must be turned over to the National Archives. But Trump and his allies have maintained that he did nothing wrong when those records were moved to Mar-a-Lago from the White House, claiming that reports to the contrary are “fake news.”

Times journalists Luke Broadwater and Adam Goldman, reporting on the FBI investigation, explain, “The effort, led by the FBI, stems from the discovery of classified information in 15 boxes that contained documents, mementos, gifts and letters that had been taken from the White House at the end of Mr. Trump’s term in apparent violation of the requirements for turning over all presidential records to the National Archives. The development was reported earlier by the Washington Post.”

2. A criminal investigation ‘might be underway.’

Broadwater and Goldman report that in February, the National Archives “said…. it had consulted with the Justice Department about the classified material.

“The Justice Department has instructed the National Archives not to share with the House Oversight Committee, which is conducting its own investigation, details about the material taken from the White House by Mr. Trump, the Committee disclosed on (April 7), in a hint that a criminal investigation might be underway,” Broadwater and Goldman report.

3. An FBI probe could determine whether a ‘foreign adversary’ had access to the material.

Broadwater and Goldman explain, “In cases of this type, the FBI would typically look at an array of scenarios, including whether the classified material was mishandled or inadvertently disclosed, and it could examine whether a foreign adversary might have gotten access.”

4. The FBI will need to determine who moved the material to Mar-a-Lago.

According to Broadwater and Goldman, “As part of any investigation, the FBI would want to find out why the classified material was in Mr. Trump’s possession and who had access to it. Then, agents would want to determine who packed the boxes and transported them to Florida and the circumstances surrounding that episode. Assessing Mr. Trump’s role could be complex, in part because, as president, Mr. Trump had the ability to easily declassify whatever information he wanted.”

When Trump was president, he had a reputation for tearing up documents.

The Presidential Records Act of 1978, passed by Congress when Jimmy Carter was president, changed the way in which White House records must be handled; the PRA gave the federal government legal ownership of all White House records. President Carter himself never had a chance to comply with the PRA, as he was voted out of office in the United States’ 1980 presidential election, and the PRA did not go into effect until January 20, 1981 — the day of President Ronald Reagan’s inauguration.

BBC NEWS
JFK diary calls Hitler 'stuff of legends'
March 23, 2017

A diary kept by President John F Kennedy as a young man travelling in Europe, revealing his fascination with Adolf Hitler, is up for auction.

Kennedy, then 28, predicted "Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived".

"He had in him the stuff of which legends are made," he continued.

Kennedy wrote the entry in the summer of 1945 after touring the German dictator's Bavarian mountain retreat.

It is thought by historians to be the only diary ever kept by the 35th US president.

The original copy will be auctioned for the first time on 26 April in Boston by longtime owner Deirdre Henderson, who worked as a research assistant for Kennedy while he was a US senator with White House ambitions.

{Kennedy] wrote that Hitler "had boundless ambition for his country which rendered him a menace to the peace of the world, but he had a mystery about him in the way he lived and in the manner of his death that will live and grow after him".

The 61-page diary was kept by Kennedy around four months after Hitler committed suicide.

At the time, the young American was touring Europe as a newspaper reporter after finishing his military service aboard a ship in the Pacific Ocean.

Nearly two decades later Kennedy would address crowds in West Berlin as US president.

He gave Ms Henderson the diary in order to inform her of his views on foreign policy and national security, she said.

In a description of the auction, she wrote: "When JFK said that Hitler 'had in him the stuff of which legends are made', he was speaking to the mystery surrounding him, not the evil he demonstrated to the world."

"Nowhere in this diary, or in any of his writings, is there any indication of sympathy for Nazi crimes or cause," she continued.

The diary also contains JFK's thoughts about the British election and Winston Churchill, who Ms Henderson called his "idol".

The winning bid is expected to be around $200,000 (£160,000).

Fascism? “The right thing for Germany”? As a young man, John F. Kennedy toured Germany three times from 1937 to 1945 – and was impressed by the “Third Reich.” Now, for the first time, the surprising accounts of the future president are being published in German.

In the summer of 1937, two young Americans and a Ford Cabriolet landed at the Port of Le Havre. Their mission: See Europe in three months. It was the classic “Grand Tour” of wealthy east-coast Americans, which, like a debutante ball, was a must for the adolescent elite. One was named Kirk LeMoyne Billings, also called Lem, and the other was Jack – better known as John F. Kennedy.

The two boys, who had just finished their first year of college at the elite university Harvard, were 20 years old and ready for adventure. They enjoyed their trip to the fullest – flirting, partying, and meeting with friends. At the same time, however, they actively studied political systems – the fascism of Italy and Germany, in particular. Lem Billings recalled later that Kennedy was “completely consumed with interest in the Hitler movement.” As a student, the future U.S. president traveled to Germany on two more occasions: In the summer of 1939, while conducting research for his senior thesis that dealt with the Munich Agreement of 1939, and in 1945, when he accompanied James Forrestal, the-then secretary of the Navy, on a tour.

i don't believe it was a problem that JFK took an interest in Adolf Hitler. You don't have to "like" someone or "approve" of someone to take interest or even believe that they are an evil genius.

The idea that we would have needed to maintain that Hitler was stupid and didn't know what he was doing was irrelevant to stopping him. In fact, the idea that people took his intelligence and personality seriously is likely what assisting in defeating him.

The trouble with demanding that Putin is stupid and will defeat himself or even demanding that he is losing (when they may not be losing as much as the propaganda suggests) - is that we are inherently training ourselves to underestimate him.

That is a tremendous difference
and THAT is the lie I am debunking.

The only time we have any words of Kennedy that some have tried to claim he favored Hiter was in the diary Kennedy kept AFTER the war, and there is nothing there about Kennedy actually "supporting" Hitler (see above).

So now I will ask F daddy to prove he did not lie by giving us a citation of Kennedy "supporting" Hitler BEFORE the war, which is exactly what he said.

I quote:
F Daddy: "I think roger forgets one of the US politicians openly supporting Hitler before WW2 was John F Kennedy."

I had forgotten that the young Kennedies did visit Germany before the war while their father was ambassador to Great Britain,
BUT JFK certainly was not "openly supporting Hitler before WW2" as you stated.

So prove me wrong on that.

Because that is the important point, the important lie you told.

Ukraine Situation Report: Donated Czech T-72 Tanks, BMP-1 Armored Vehicles Headed To UkraineReplenishing Ukraine's stocks of tanks and armored vehicles could help it keep up the pressure on Russian invaders.

@FranticGoat

There are widespread reports that the Czech government has at least begun moving T-72 tanks and BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles out of storage for transfer to Ukraine. This follows reports over the weekend that the U.S. government would help facilitate the delivery of T-72 tanks from an unspecified NATO member to the Ukrainian armed forces. Last week, the German government had separately approved a request from authorities in the Czech Republic to send ex-East German BMP-1s that they now own to Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have been stepping up calls for more substantial military aid packages that include various higher-end items, such as tanks and other armored vehicles, in recent weeks. This has come as Ukrainian forces have made significant gains in the northeastern end of the country. Russian units have been steadily pulling out of these areas as part of what appears to be a refocusing of efforts to the southeast, potentially as part of a broader push to at least bifurcate the country to some degree.
