602 million people 35 country study reveals the truth...

New Study Shows Face Mask Usage Did Not Correlate With Better Outcomes
A new peer-reviewed study entitled: “Correlation Between Mask Compliance and COVID-19 Outcomes in Europe” has demonstrated that use of face masks, even widespread, did not correlate with better outcomes during the COVID epidemic, based on data from 35 European countries with populations of over one million people each, encompassing a total of 602 million people.
The study noted that the average proportion of mask usage in the period investigated (October 2020 until March 2021) was 60.9% ± 19.9%.
…The study also noted that the public may have gained the impression that masks could be helpful due to the fact that mandates were usually implemented after the first peak of COVID cases had passed. However, it became evident that masks were not in fact helpful later that same year, when widespread mask usage does not appear to have mitigated the severity of the COVID wave of winter 2020.
“Moreover,” the study concludes, “the moderate positive correlation between mask usage and deaths in Western Europe also suggests that the universal use of masks may have had harmful unintended consequences.”

So not only did masks not help on a grand scale (and a 602 million size sample is a pretty good sample size) but they may have had unintended harmful consequences.  Now many will cite small studies from small samples as proof that masks and mask mandates worked. But these are generally small sample studies comparing things like "counties" and pretty much never accounted for differences between age and other factors. Easy for one county (who might have a large senior population) to show more deaths than another county (who might have a much younger population).

So far I have not seen a single study that was state vs state, country wide, or country vs country that showed any significant difference. As any statistician will tell you. The larger the scope, the larger the sample, and the more you can remove other factors, the more consistent and accurate the results will be.  If a study of 602 million people is not large enough, as well as the John Hopkins study of 330 million Americans is not large enough, then not sure how to satisfy anyone else.

Between the two of them that is nearly a billion person sample. If someone has a larger sample survey that says something different, then I would be happy to review it. If you are going to show me some study between counties or precincts, or other smallish areas, then I will not bother even looking at it.

May 3: What the latest omicron subvariants mean for reinfection risk (NBC News)

Even though many people in the U.S. have a high level of immunity from COVID from a combination of vaccinations, boosters, and prior infection, waning immunity and new omicron subvariants can change a person’s ability to fight off infections—which means that reinfection is possible and perhaps even likely, according to William Hanage, associate professor of epidemiology. He noted that the risk of serious illness will vary among those who can get infected.

May 3: More uniformly infectious, more treatable, more genetically predictable: How coronavirus is getting closer to flu (STAT)

SARS-CoV-2 may become more predictable, like seasonal flu, according to experts—although it’s still capable of causing dangerous surges around the world. “Nobody knows what this virus is going to do next,” said William Hanage, associate professor of epidemiology. “The pandemic will be done but not in a way that most people think of as done.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis pestered high school kids for wearing masks at a photo op/press conference Wednesday, where he also used the Ukraine crisis to take a jab at France.

This describes your views.

In some libertarian circles, there has been a rise in a certain narrative in media pieces. It can be videos, Facebook post rants, articles, you name it, and they all share one theme: “calling out” businesses that require their potential customers to wear face masks when inside.

Normally the purpose of the share is to commend the individual confronting the staff or calling those following the business owner’s policy “sheeple,” blind, or ignorant. Now, as a proponent of free speech, I believe that such individuals have the right to create such disturbances, within reason, if they so wish. However, I am concerned at the number of people who seem to believe that this is an inherently libertarian position.

Private businesses have the right to require masks and vaccines for entry

I have considered myself a libertarian for as long as I have been engaged in political discussion and debate, and every time I see a sign asking me to wear a mask inside a shop, cinema, or cafe I rejoice! Why? Because it reminds me of why I am a libertarian: I believe that when left to their own devices, without force from the state, individuals will act in a rational manner that will better us all, at least for the most part!

A business requiring you to wear a mask is no more of an infringement on your liberty than the classic “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” signs are. Private businesses have a right to refuse service for any number of reasons, and that is a cornerstone of libertarian thinking. Masks do reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, and as such, it is reasonable that businesses might seek to encourage such this practice.

What some seem to have forgotten in this discussion is that you can be fully in favor of something while simultaneously being against a government mandate for it. As an anarcho-capitalist, I am of course against government-enforced mandates for masks and vaccines.

Well Denny... considering there was likely nowhere in the world where "everyone" wore a mask, you have to still consider whether areas that had mandates and higher mask wearing did better (or worse) than those who did not.

After two years of data with a sample size of almost 1 billion people... there is no statistical or scientific evidence that it helped. To the degree there was a difference there seemed to have both "slightly higher" death tolls and other negative consequences.

You can throw your fit all you want... and cite the studies where two mannequins sneeze in other's faces till you are blue in the face, and it won't change the results or the reality.

Well Reverend... the simple fact is that this is a false statement. Just because you read it on Politicalwire doesn't make it true.

John Hopkins study on the subject proved otherwise in terms of death toll. We also had the recent study that showed that cumulative infection rates were exactly the same in the 39 states that had mandates and lockdowns as it was in the 11 states that did not. Both had 24%.

Now we have this study of over 2 years of data for over 600 million Europeans that backs up the John Hopkins cumulative study.

But I guess your studies are using a much broader sample?

More than two years and over 900 million people?

Next thing you will do is roll out that debunked piece of nonsense about Trump vs Biden counties that several other studies (including something I could check in about 30 minutes) completely show to be untrue.

'Anemic' Russian attack making little headway, Pentagon official says
LIVE UPDATES, USA TODAY - 2h ago

The Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has made limited progress:
small gains from forces pressing south from Izyium and a virtual stalemate pushing to the north from around Mariupol,
a senior Pentagon official said Monday.

The official characterized the Russian attack as “incremental and somewhat anemic.”
The Russians have been trying to orchestrate their artillery, air and ground forces in eastern Ukraine with little success, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence assessments.

The Ukrainians have countered with artillery strikes of their own. The Pentagon is sending 90 M777 howitzer cannons to Ukraine, 85 of which have arrived, and more than 100,000 artillery shells. More than 300 Ukrainian soldiers have completed training on the operation of the howitzer cannons, the official said.

Russian morale continues to suffer, the official said,
with anecdotal reports of officers refusing to follow orders in the eastern Donbas region.
Muddy ground has further slowed Russian operations.
The inability to supply their troops, a problem that forced the Russian retreat from Kyiv, continues to slow their progress in eastern Ukraine.

About 97 Russian battalion groups are inside Ukraine, the official said. That’s an increase in recent days of about five battalion groups, which total about 700 to 1,000 troops each.

AND SOME OF THE RUSSIANS ARE SABOTAGING THEIR OWN TANKS, ETC. AND SOME EVEN SHOT DOWN ONE OF THEIR OWN PLANES.

might be a couple of dead Republicans hidden there!

I ran several states here on this blog... showing my work with the actual sources of the death tolls as well as the population make ups of counties and which counties voted for Biden and which counties voted for Trump...

and there was literally no significant difference in any state that I went through. John Hopkins did this state by state and came up with same thing as the study that I posted on today....

But hey... you can choose to ignore the mainstream medical studies by thes large medical research companies and go with a blogger with a conspiracy theory if you so choose!

The Hillary Clinton alleged 📷 conspire is to destroy the Orange monster with the help from the FBI is basically dead .
A federal judge has turned down a request from Special Counsel John Durham for a ruling that a lawyer facing trial on a false statement charge was part of a wide-ranging “joint venture” involving Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, Democratic operatives, private investigation firm Fusion GPS and various technology researchers.

The decision issued Saturday afternoon by U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper limits evidence and testimony prosecutors can offer against attorney Michael Sussmann at a jury trial set to get underway later this month.

The ruling spares the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee the potential embarrassment of a federal judge finding they were part of a coordinated effort to level since-discredited allegations that candidate Donald Trump or his allies maintained a data link from Trump Tower to Russia’s Alfa Bank. The Clinton campaign disseminated that claim amid a broader effort to call out Trump’s ties to Russia at a time when U.S. intelligence agencies had revealed efforts by the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election.

Durham has charged Sussmann — whose firm at the time, Perkins Coie, represented the Clinton camp and Democratic National Committee — with lying to the FBI in September 2016, when he approached the bureau’s top lawyer James Baker with what he described as evidence of links between Trump Tower and Alfa Bank.

Prosecutors say Sussmann presented his tip to Baker as simply a good-faith attempt to protect national security, when he was actually acting on behalf of the campaign and tech researchers he represented. Cooper said that permitting prosecutors to lay out evidence of such a broad, political conspiracy would amount to a “time-consuming and largely unnecessary mini-trial,” considering Durham has not charged Sussmann with conspiracy but only with a “narrow” false statement to the FBI.

Sussmann is one of just three people charged by Durham since he began his probe three years ago. The others are Kevin Clinesmith, who pleaded guilty to doctoring emails used to justify a surveillance warrant against Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page, and Igor Danchenko, the primary source behind former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele’s anti-Trump “dossier.”

Prosecutors often argue that statements that would otherwise be impermissible hearsay under federal trial rules should be admitted because they were uttered by members of a conspiracy and show those individuals working together. However, the rules also allow admission of such statements when the alleged joint venture wasn’t necessarily illegal.

In Sussmann’s case, prosecutors asked Cooper to rule in advance of trial that Sussmann was “acting in concert toward a common goal” with the pro-Clinton operatives, researchers and others. Such a ruling would have given the government attorneys more latitude to introduce emails against Sussmann, but the judge said the scope and membership of the alleged anti-Trump venture was too uncertain to make such a finding.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Court will exercise its discretion not to engage in the kind of extensive evidentiary analysis that would be required to find that such a joint venture existed, and who may have joined it,” wrote Cooper, an appointee of former President Barack Obama. “While the Special Counsel has proffered some evidence of a collective effort to disseminate the purported link between Trump and Alfa Bank to the press and others, the contours of this venture and its participants are not entirely obvious.”

Attempting to link Sussmann to such a conspiracy — particularly when he isn’t charged with it — would “essentially amount to a second trial on a non-crime,” he said.

In Cooper’s 24-page ruling, he also says he will permit prosecutors to question witnesses about the scope of an effort by technology researchers to study links in so-called Domain Network Service or DNS data between Trump Tower and the Russian bank. However, the judge said he will not permit Durham’s team to introduce evidence that a technology executive, Rodney Joffe, allegedly had doubts about the accuracy of some of the data.

Lmao 🤣

JFD -

I think there is going to be a hard time really figuring out how much mask wearing was actually taking place in public and obviously no way to know what people were doing in their homes. This is not just who is wearing masks, but how often they were wearing them.

The ability to calculate that to any real degree of accuracy is going to be difficult. But the underlying concept of the study was that areas that (within these same margins) had higher mask wearing did not tend to do any better than those where the mask wearing was lower.

Even in the US - the states that did not mandate mask wearing still had places within the state that did and people still wore them even if there was no mandate to do so.

The study does not (IMHO) "prove" that mask wearing made people die at a higher rate (as some people suggested). But I think it goes pretty far in "disproving" that mask wearing was some sort of silver bullet. What it shows is that there really isn't evidence that it helped prevent deaths in either direction. The vagueness of how you determine who wore masks is obviously a problem if you were trying to "prove" something. I think it is less of a problem if you are trying to show that there was no "proven" correlation.

And the idea that mask wearing had other consequences should not have been really labeled as "unintended". I think our medical people knew that wearing these masks as long as people were wearing them in some situations was not healthy. If it was, we would be born with filters over out mouths and noses!

The United States will surpass 1 million coronavirus deaths this week. On average, each of those deaths affected nine close relatives, not including close friends, neighbors or extended family members, leaving more than 9 million Americans mourning the loss of a loved one during the pandemic.

The Biden administration on Friday warned that a fall surge could infect up to 100 million people. New omicron subvariants that appear to be very good at evading immunity could drive a sharp increase in cases in coming months. And a possible summer surge in the South [WHY THE SOUTH?]could use up the nation’s supply of antivirals and tests just before the fall arrives.

Millions of people retired early during the pandemic, but they are returning to the workforce in droves now that many offices have reopened and restrictions have been lifted. An estimated 1.5 million retirees reentered the labor market in the past year, according to the Labor Department.

The Judge in the Sussman case did mostly the right thing in my humble opinion. Sussman was not being charged with a "conspiracy" so introducing evidence of a grand conspiracy was not relevant to the charges of perjury.

Whether the research was known as false (by the researchers) when it was turned over to the FBI is still pretty much proven based on Durham filings. People within the research team admitted through internal communications that it was not only false, but would be easily found to be.

The fact that Durham is not allowed to use that to prove "perjury" does not debunk that claim. It just isn't relevant to the case (at least not now). The trap that is set here however, is that the Judge made it clear it could be introduced under certain circumstance. If Sussman pushes too hard in an attempt to act as if he was acting in good faith, then perhaps it could be pulled in.

But Sussman lost the main portion of this. He had to turn over everything to the Judge and much of it is being allowed (when Sussman claimed it was all protected under privilege).

The reality is that Sussman lied and that is obvious. Why he hasn't pled this out and why he is taking it to trial is anyone's guess. They have him dead to rights and the only way a Jury does not find him guilty would be through some sort of political nullification (as in I hate Trump so I am going to fuck my oath and let him off).

The January 6th is investigation is interesting

Members on the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack on 6 January are moving closer to issuing subpoenas to Republican members of Congress to compel their cooperation in the inquiry – though it has started to dawn on them that they may be out of time.

The panel is expected to make a final decision on the subpoena question over the next couple of weeks, according to sources directly familiar with internal deliberations, with House investigators needing to start wrapping up their work before public hearings in June.

While the members on the select committee remain undecided about whether to subpoena Republican members of Congress, their refusal to assist the investigation in any form has caused the sentiment to turn towards taking that near-unprecedented action, the sources said.

The shifting view has come as a result of the dismay among the members in January, when House minority leader Kevin McCarthy and others turned down requests for voluntary cooperation, turning to anger after three more of Donald Trump’s allies last week refused to cooperate.

What has changed in recent weeks in the select committee’s assessment is that they cannot ignore the deep involvement between some Republican members of Congress and the former president’s unlawful schemes to overturn the results of the 2020 election, the sources said.

Presidential elections Election 2020 Electoral College Congress Elections Donald Trump
Call Trump or Pence? It's decision time for Jan. 6 panel
By MARY CLARE JALONICK and FARNOUSH AMIRI
Today
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection has interviewed nearly 1,000 people. But the nine-member panel has yet to talk to the two most prominent players in that day’s events — former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence.

As the investigation winds down and the panel plans a series of hearings in June, members of the committee are debating whether to call the two men, whose conflict over whether to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election win was at the center of the attack. Trump pressured Pence for days, if not weeks, to use his ceremonial role presiding over the Jan. 6 count to try to block or delay Biden’s certification. Pence refused to do so, and rioters who broke into the building that day called for his hanging.

There are reasons to call either or both of them. The committee wants to be as thorough as possible, and critics are sure to pounce if they don’t even try. But some lawmakers on the panel have argued that they've obtained all the information they need without Trump and Pence.

Nearly a year into their wide-ranging investigation into the worst attack on the Capitol in more than two centuries, the House committee has interviewed hundreds of witnesses and received more than 100,000 pages of documents. Interviews have been conducted out of the public eye in obscure federal office buildings and private Zoom sessions.

The Democratic chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, said in early April that the committee has been able to validate a lot of the statements attributed to Trump and Pence without their testimony. He said at that time there was “no effort on the part of the committee” to call Pence, though there have been discussions since then about potentially doing so.

Speaking about Pence, Thompson said the panel had “initially thought it would be important” to call him, but “there are a lot of things on that day we know — we know the people who tried to get him to change his mind about the count and all of that, so what is it we need?”

A lot of the people they are interviewing, Thompson added, “are people we didn’t have on the original list.”

The panel, comprised of seven Democrats and two Republicans, has said that the evidence it has compiled is enough to link Trump to a federal crime.

In addition, calling a former president or vice president to testify in a congressional investigation is a rare, if not unprecedented, move that could face major legal hurdles and backfire politically.

The Jan. 6 committee has given only a glimpse of what it has found, mostly in court filings where excerpts of transcripts have been used.

A recent filing from the committee revealed portions of interviews with Hutchinson that took place in February and March of this year. That testimony provided new evidence about the involvement of GOP lawmakers in Trump's effort to overturn the 2020 election, including a meeting at the White House in which attorneys for the president advised that putting up an alternate slate of electors declaring Trump the winner was not “legally sound.”

Another court document revealed testimony from Jacob, who served as Pence’s chief counsel. In a series of emails, Jacob repeatedly told lawyer John Eastman, who was working with Trump, that Pence could not intervene in his ceremonial role and halt the certification of the electoral votes. Jacob told Eastman the legal framework he was putting forward to do just that was “essentially entirely made up.”

Meadows’ texts have also been revelatory, detailing how people inside Trump's orbit pleaded for him to forcefully condemn the attack on the Capitol as it unfolded. The pleas came from Trump’s children, members of Congress and even Fox News hosts.

MAGA Means that the Red Scare is back 1952

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill Monday morning at Miami’s Freedom Tower that will require “Victims of Communism Day” to be observed in the state’s public high schools.

The bill, HB 395, mandates that public schools instruct students on the horrors of communism each year on November 7 or a preceding school day. The “Victims of Communism Day” legislation passed the Florida House and Senate unanimously earlier this year.

“We want to make sure that every year folks in Florida, but particularly our students, will learn about the evils of communism, the dictators that have led communist regimes, and the hundreds of millions of individuals who suffered and continue to suffer under the weight of this discredited ideology,” DeSantis said at a press conference.

Miami Young Republicans President Armando Ibarra and his group helped launch the “Victims of Communism Day” bill. Ibarra told The Daily Wire that his father was a political prisoner in Cuba and endured “incredible cruelty,” so this bill means more to him than simply another piece of legislation.

“When we brought the idea for the [Victims of Communism] bill to Rep. David Borrero we wanted to honor the people in our community that had suffered and the people that were lost to the evils of communism,” Ibarra said.

According to the bill, high school students will be required to receive 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” beginning in the 2023-2024 school year.

The instruction will include “topics such as Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet System, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, Vladimir Lenin and the Russian Revolution, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and Nicolás Maduro and the Chavismo movement, and how victims suffered under these regimes through poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech.”

DeSantis’ signature on the bill also means the State Board of Education will revise social studies standards to include the classroom instruction that aligns with “Victims of Communism Day.”

McCarthyism of the woke.
The Republicans don't have an agenda except cultural war.

McCarthyism is the pejorative term liberals gave to the anti-communist crusades of 1950s-era Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. From his perch as chair of the Government Operations Committee, McCarthy launched a wave of investigations to ferret out supposed communist subversion of government agencies. Armed with his favorite question — “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” — McCarthy terrorized his targets and silenced his critics. Thousands of people lost their jobs as a result, often based on nothing more than innuendo or chance associations.

The mob fervor extended to the state governments and the private sector, too. States enacted “loyalty oaths” requiring people employed by the government, including tenured university faculty members, to disavow “radical beliefs” or lose their jobs. Many refused and were fired. Hollywood notoriously rooted out real and suspected communists, creating the infamous “blacklist” of people who were informally barred from any work with Hollywood studios. The “red scare” even nearly toppled America’s favorite television star, Lucille Ball, who had registered to vote as a communist in the 1930s.

Steven Thurlow (via FBI court filing).

A Michigan man who shared a picture of himself wearing military-type gear affixed with a “Boogaloo” patch before joining the violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.

Steven Thurlow, 50, appeared to proudly declare his allegiance to the boogaloo movement in a picture posted before Jan. 6.

“Ahhhh, nothing like a new pair of 511’s and fresh set of level IV Sapi’s in the plate carrier to go ‘peacefully protest’ with,” the caption reads. As the complaint against Thurlow explains, a Level IV “SAPI” plate is a “high-level ballistic body armor plate that is rated to withstand a direct hit by a high muzzle velocity armor piercing bullet.”

Thurlow is dressed in camouflage military-style gear and is wearing a gas mask, a weapon appearing to be slung over his shoulder. The photo also shows a prominently-displayed patch with the word “Boogaloo” on it.

Prosectors describe “the ‘Boogaloo'” as “a term referencing a violent uprising or impending civil war. The term is sometimes used by militia extremists and racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists (RMVE) … The term has particularly resonated with militia extremists, who have adopted it to reference an impending politically-motivated civil war or uprising against the government following perceived incursions on Constitutional rights—including the Second Amendment—or other perceived government overreach.

Why Isn’t Biden Repealing Trump’s Tariffs?
May 9, 2022 at 5:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

Jonathan Chait: “Inflation is, by far, President Biden’s gravest problem. It is eating up the wage gains thrown off by the hot labor market and forcing the Federal Reserve to risk triggering a recession by raising interest rates. It is the main cause of his anemic approval ratings and the terrifyingly high probability that a dangerously authoritarian Republican Party will win the 2024 election.

“There isn’t a button Biden can push to make the whole problem go away. But there is a button he can push to make some of the problem go away. The mystery is why he hasn’t pushed it.”

“That button is to rescind the tariffs imposed by his predecessor, which were created by executive order, and could be reversed the same way.”

“It’s now early May – sixteen months since the January 6th attack, and fourteen months since Garland took office. There’s no technical reason DOJ needs to indict anytime soon — the federal crimes in play here typically carry five-year statutes of limitations — but the Department’s pace conveys a lack of urgency that is ill-matched to the gravity of the potential crimes.

“Put it this way: if Trump did commit a crime relating to the coup attempt, it’s the most serious political crime in our country’s history. Yet the Justice Department is going to wait a year and change (and counting) to do anything about it?

“I know, I know: these things take time, and they want their case to be perfect. That’s an easy refrain, but I reject it in these circumstances. During my fourteen years as a prosecutor, I saw law enforcement move with astonishing speed when circumstances demanded it.”

FBI confirms there was no insurrection on Jan. 6

The Cambridge Dictionary defines “insurrection” as: “an organized attempt by a group of people to defeat their government and take control of their country, usually by violence”

By that definition, there was no “insurrection” at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, according to the FBI. Reuters reports:

The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages."

This report is a devastating blow to President Joe Biden and Democrats, who have attempted to make the existence of an “insurrection” on Jan. 6 a key issue in the 2022 midterm elections. Reuters does note that some “cells of protesters,” including members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, did coordinate to “break into the Capitol,” but the FBI found “no evidence that the groups had serious plans about what to do if they made it inside.”

None of this excuses the violent riot that happened on Jan. 6. The FBI has arrested 570 rioters and each and every one of them should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

But that is what the event was: a riot, just like so many other riots. Trying to politicize it and turn it into something it wasn't won’t make the Capitol any safer.
